  1. the ostinato you're using with that tightly squeezed synth is cool, you could add a lot of cool bassline riffs that work off of that.
  2. from a listener perspective, I enjoyed the composition of this. Technically it's nothing special, but if you took all of the melodic ideas and really let loose as if it were a band or ensemble playing it, this could grow into something very charming. Because there's sort of a stylistic preference on OCremix for professionally produced aesthetics(mebbeh I'm wrong), but you could fall more strongly into the "chiptune" style if you chose to start using a really authentic soundchip sound. Right now you're in the middle where it will be hard to get love from the musicians.
  3. the vocals have potential, but they feel like they've been shoehorned in. maybe if you didn't compress them and noise-gated them or chopped them you could get a cool melodic-staccato effect.
  4. Tomo Club is a string trio with a pair of flutes and a percussionist. This is a recording of a recent rehearsal take we did of "Bonds of Sea and Fire" from Xenogears. We wanted it to sound old.' thanks for listening and I would greatly appreciate any feedback.
  5. heyo! thanks for the interest in the GAME Expo. We're cranking out schedules for the panelists and events/performances right now. We'll be posting everything at www.renogameexpo.com

  6. @nutritious thanks for the relocation! the event website is http://game.rvgsymphony.com there will be several panels, tourneys, retro freeplay and artists also attending the event.
  7. The Reno Video Game Symphony is throwing a gaming and game music convention in Reno, Nevada on June 1st. If anybody would like to perform at the convention, send an email to rvgorchestra@gmail.com with a sample of your work. Please include "OCREMIX SUBMISSION" in the subject. We have over 35 musicians in our group, so we may be able to provide a live band depending on your needs. For example, we had a small brass section back up some ambient electronica at our last convention. It all depends on what you want. thanks!
  8. IMERUAT is really cool
  9. that is the crux of the biscuit. I have always preferred live instrumentation over pure software solutions, but naturally there's a tradeoff since many of us are using technology that is no more than 10 years old. Bjork was a very inspiring concert to me in this regard as she uses some extremely novel (but extremely expensive) technology to allow musicianship to shine through. For example, if these ever become cheaper, I would love to use one but in general, if you can find a software setup that involves triggering synced loops or samples, having some kind of visual feedback for the audience makes a HUGE difference. FL has come packed with visualizer software which can be linked to performance data off a MIDI track, but it uses lots of RAM and just using the lights on your pads so the audience can see them can do a world of difference. because the previous post has so much great information on the technical issues, I just want to assert that no matter how tight your tech is, it doesn't matter a single tick if you're not comfortable with the idea of sharing your sensations, emotions, and thoughts with a group of people in a sympathetic way. giving them something interesting to look at for the 30-odd minutes you're playing noises can be a meticulously synced projection or just a very clever t-shirt.
  10. that actually makes me think of another bit. i learned a lot this last year writing for real instruments and learning the limitations of actual players. Occasionally, I write the word "fuzzy pickles" in the score to let the players know that I want them to freak out and just make a ton of noise. Eventually, after rehearsing 5 or 6 times, they start to develop a pattern to the madness, and with DAWs, it's easy to simulate that same process with yourself very quickly, though it lacks the groupthink.
  11. this thread has a ton of great perspectives. With any instrument, including each drum sound, I work through pads or keys, and I haven't programmed drums note for note in a while, but I remember that it can be really fun. My biggest suggestion is to listen as much as you can, and there's a ton of great music out there that highlights great use of entropy in percussion. The compilation album "Rebel Music" by Bob Marley and the Wailers is absolutely stuffed full of extremely inventive drum playing, and each track is very different. It also highlights how each sound of the drums is a unique instrument, like a band in itself.
  12. seems somewhat similar to 343 hiring Neil Davidge for Halo 4. That turned out pretty damn well for them. and Davidge.
  13. very interesting average_foe! I enjoyed taking the survey, and I posted the survey over at the RVGS facebook as I think all our community is up your alley.
  14. we performed the Dream Oath Opera last year with an opera company in town. I've been looking really hard for a venue to perform the Great Mighty Poo, and if we do, I will DEFINITELY post it here.
  15. i am not familiar with this tune but I really like the mood of that piece, it felt like the second one ended abruptly, I was ready for a lot more.
  16. well, more of a dub band, but I was listening to a ton of "scratch" perry, and it occurred to me that rebel music really works with the plot of FF VI, so I cut a track. Whadya think? Is it too on the nose? http://youtu.be/xA3Ws6_qsqw
  17. the track is balanced, and the arrangement is fun, but the compression is quite hot on the instruments. It is a bit harsh.
  18. as a violist, I greatly appreciate your use of my instrument. I don't really know what to suggest, because I'm not sure what your goals are with the track, but the 2:00 mark could use some more tension, if building up to 2:35 in some way. As an interesting scenario, if I were playing this on my viola, I would certainly use a great deal more arpeggiation playing in this track, as the chords are so big and lush, allowing some very smooth harmonic jumps into different registers.
  19. castlevania is certainly close to what I was looking for! I think I'll speed it up and put it on upright bass. thanks! also, it was nice to check out soukaigi, and makes me think of a bunch of SoM tunes that could bear some great 2-4 bar bass ostinatos.
  20. I am reforming a group to play some themes in an Ennio Morricone/John Zorn-syled small group. I really think the most important part of a song for an improviser is the bass, so I figured I'd ask y'all what your favorite basslines were. I really love Bust-A-Move and Startropics's Cave music, but I am really interested in finding some killer ostinatos.
  21. the synth is mixed much better here. I also think you've done a good job of connecting a full percussion section into one line, while keeping the whole orchestra sounding like a cohesive group.
  22. I submitted one remix four months ago, and another a bit later. I didn't receive formal denials for either(I submitted the second one assuming the first one had been lost)and I never saw them anywhere in the judges' forum. The guidelines say I can check in the judges forum to inquire, but this seemed the place to be. My first submission was Snakemetal from MM2/3(9/17), and my second was Curious from Secret of Mana(10/17). They were submitted as Melodious Punk. Thank you!
  23. this sounds like some fun, I'm in.
  24. man, the 13 year old me immediately wants to play every single guitar part in this. I think I'll buy some old Surge off of Ebay and have myself a nostalgic evening. My ears always struggle to grasp synth guitars, but you got a pretty good tone out of it. I suspect a bit more twiddling could make it even more expressive, without delving into the very testy world of synthguitar dynamics. Is that the FL stock guitar instrument? I can't remember the name... Never seen this game, it sounds like a shmup but you say it's a hack 'n slash?
  25. it's been a little while since I listened to the original, but I can tell you spent some time "putting the eyebrows" on a pretty rad tune. At the very end, I got a sorta FF Tactics vibe, which makes my head explode with possibilities. It would be really nice to hear some phrasing in the percussion, as they are very static and distract from the other parts.
