How expensive does a mic pre-amp need to be...
Dafydd replied to Dafydd's topic in Music Composition & Production
Just to clarify, since some of you seem to be missing the point - I'm not interested in a whole freaking mixer. I just want a pre-amp, with one input jack (for the mic) and one output jack (USB or audio, I don't care, as long as I can plug it into my computer), one that doesn't add noticable amounts of noise or humming as it amplifies the signal. I'm not rich and don't intend on spending money on stuff I don't need, like several channels, EQ and stuff. It's not for live playback, just for recording. -
Anybody know anything about electric drum sets?

I once played on a kit that wasn't velocity sensitive. It was also plugged into a really bad synth with really bad samples. The whole experience was similar to trying to take a shower and only getting extremely cold water. -

I thought it might be because of disturbance from inside the computer, too. The M-audio picks up my mic like I was wispering in the other room - the volume is really low, and so when I try raise the volume in the recorded sound file, I raise the noise volume as well. To sum it up, in order to get the X-Fi and the Audiophile to record something that ends up as a sound file with a given volume, the end result has equal amounts of noise (the X-Fi because its built-in amp sucks, the Audiophile becaues it doesn't have one, which necessitates post-recording amplification). A USB recording device might be the answer, but I doubt they're cheap either. Like I said, I'd rather not have to buy another sound card, because I already have plenty of them. I used the same mic with a laptop that had a SigmaTel built-in sound chip, and the sound was wonderful in comparison. In order to use my computer to record stuff, I need something to amplify the signal from the mic before it reaches the computer, and without adding noticable amounts of noise or hum to this signal. Is there really no way of doing this without paying several hundreds of dollars? It's like buying a whole new frickin' computer. If I don't get any good suggestions soon I'm going to have to record sound using my handycam. Yes, it has better sound than the audiophile. -
Jill of the Jungle Trilogy - Full soundtrack Free For All!

Wow, this is spooky... Out of nowhere, a random thought about this game popped up in my head about 2 days ago (in particular, its soundtrack and whether something fun could be done with it), and as far as I know, no thoughts of it had run through my mind for at least 10 years before 2 days ago. And now you start a thread about remixing it. Telepathy? EDIT: I found a MIDI rip of the first episode and uploaded it here. Isn't there a tool to play back MIDI's using AdLib sound instead of GM? -
Lost inspiration and motivation, what now?

If that were true, then this whole website is a giant waste of time for all involved. -
How expensive does a mic pre-amp need to be...

Actually, I have both an X-Fi and an Audiophile 2496 in my machine and they both totally suck when it comes to recording. They cause noise even when there's nothing connected to them - nothing in the mic jack. Equal amounts. I even bought the 2496 specifically for being able to record stuff, and was very let down to realize it sucked as bad as the X-Fi (even though I only paid $70 for it). I'd rather not buy another Audio Interface, considering I already have 2 of them. Especially if a lone pre-amp is cheaper than the combo. So, how much do I have to pay to get a servicable one of those? -

I don't know, just something where I plug the mic into one end and the other end into the computer, as a means to record stuff. What's a recording interface and what are they for? -
...in order to be worth buying? I don't need anything fancy, I just want to be able to record something from my mic and not have to boost the recording afterwards (since that boosts the noise as well), and I want the pre-amp not to add any noticable noise itself (the noise I'm talking about seems to be coming from the computer itself, since it's there even when recording without a mic connected). Do I really need to cough up several hundreds of dollars for something like that?

Haha, can't wait to hear it.

Still haven't heard any of his mixes... can you stay an OverClocked Remixer without actually having any of your mixes on the site? :-/

The queue is pretty long now. What happened? Real life intervened?

I think it would be cool to keep updating these bios even after the project is finished - but only the appearances lists, and removing dead links, not by editing the bios themselves (as we decided a long way back, the bios were never intended to be "up-to-date". I could take care of doing this on my own, if you feel like you want to be entirely done with this thing. Also, who knows, DJP might add new mascots at some point. I don't really know why I'm bringing all this up, it's just, we're this close to finishing, and I don't think the project will ever be completely finished, but after the deadline, I have hopes to never have to edit any of the actual bios again.
-
...aaand the rest of you? Wait, they're all uploaded? I can't remember anyone coming here saying "ok, I'm finished!" What an anticlimactic end. I guess the rest is up to me, now that I have 2 weeks to write my letter of thanks.

So... bump. What's going on?

Cool title. Pretty crazy stuff, everything is everywhere. A bit too chaotic for my taste, and the piano is too loud. I'd love to use the snare in some of my own songs though. Where'd you find it?

We do appreciate your help, Darklink42. Please post the rest of your non-grammar/rewording stuff.

I will mention the regional differences, yes.

I understand where you're coming from, Linearity, so how about this - from now on, we will stop rewording phrases, but we will always be on the lookout for spelling errors and missing periods. Commas will be less of a concern. Actual fact errors, if any, must be fixed though, don't you think? Also, the list of games in which a character is in can still be updated as more and more games are remixed. Updating those lists is not an imperative, but I'd be willing to add games to the appearances lists if someone (an casual visitor, for example) posts about how Mario was also in, e.g. Super Mario Land 2 (which hasn't been remixed yet, but when it has a remix on the site, I can add it to Mario's appearances). This does in no way behoove you to do the same. I understand why you don't want anyone messing with your bios behind your back. Still, like I said, DJP is probably going to take a pretty long time adding this new functionality to the site, and in the meantime, we can at least let Darklink42 post his suggestions. He is well informed that considering them is at our discretion.

Hm. I thought ZM was too ugly to compare... haha And thanks!

I have yet to play a game that plays better than Super Metroid, control wise and animation wise. Samus just looked so natural and real running around, ran and jumped with a realistic speed and responded very well to the controls. Even though aiming diagonally was a real pain in the ass, especially when jumping at the same time...
