OCR03159 - Final Fantasy II "Analog Freedom"
nitrozsz replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I was waiting for the rock portion to start, I just knew it was there waiting to come at you during the first minute and a half. It’s so great. Very 80s rock ballad. It almost sounds like this would make a great ending theme for Final Fantasy II. -
OCR03150 - Final Fantasy I, II & III "Heroes of Dawn"
nitrozsz replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Man I’m a sucker for these piano medleys. I’m amazed that I’m finding such good ones at the bottom of the reviews thread. This one is definitely no exception. It sounds like music that you could actually hear in a Final Fantasy game today. Yeah I know it’s an arrangement of Final Fantasy music, but I mean this specific track that I’m reviewing right now could pass as an official Final Fantasy track. -
It’s a short track, but it doesn’t feel short. It’s a very fun and vibrant track, with so much production value thrown into it, you almost lose yourself in this track, and don’t even care how long it is. I see that this was compared to Kirby. I would compare this to Mega Man, personally.

I have to second a lot of what MrKyle said in my assessment of this track, as I liked this track for the reasons he pointed out. I do want to add to how mellow this track is. It’s so mellow, it’s kind of tough to find the right moment to listen to this. You can’t jump into this track at any time and expect to jam to it right out of the gate. It’s more suited to those chill and down time moments than anything else. But that's not really a bad thing I think. Great job all around.

Har har har, what a silly title. But don’t let it fool you, it’s really a great track. The beats, and the percussion work are very well produced, while the main synth instruments sound pretty good on their own merits. Complimentary, and neither too mellow or too exciting. The right kind of chill. Ultimately, the beats are what truly bring this track to life.

Man, Jake Kaufman was so ahead of his time when it comes to the music on this site. I was kind of critical of another medley of his I reviewed, Funk Fusion. But this Contra medley is just all kinds of amazing. It was very interesting to hear the original music in parts blend right in with Kaufman’s music. Perhaps the amount of effort and production placed in this track was foreshadowing his eventual involvement in the Contra 4 soundtrack?

OCR00406 - Killer Instinct "Reflex"
nitrozsz replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The drum sequence was good, but really soft compared to the rest of the instruments used. I think I was more impressed with the bass work than anything else with this track. It does come across as a little repetitive, but at the same time, there was some effort in making this track varied. However, I think the soft percussion kind of set me off of this track. -
OCR02991 - Metal Slug 4 "Eau Charix"
nitrozsz replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Wow! What an intense battle theme we have here. The balancing is amazing, given all the instruments used. And I can definitely tell that this artist was inspired by the Black Mages. But I honestly don’t think the Black Mages could perform a battle theme as great and well produced as this. And that transition from the slow part that started at 3:11 straight back to the intensity of this track was absolutely flawless. -
OCR02985 - Dynamite Headdy "Zenpyo!"
nitrozsz replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Sounds like an ancient Japanese demon is out to get me. And the more this track progresses, the more this demon persists in destroying the world. It’s a very interesting blend of classic folklore with modern rock to create a splendid battle theme. The ending seemed a little abrupt to me though, sadly. -
Holy crap this does sound like classic Silly Symphonies cartoon! I don’t know if this was done on purpose, but the quality of the entire sounds a little grainy to me, but I love this, as it adds to that classic cartoon vibe that this track creates. This track is so playful and fun, I just wish it wasn’t short. Another three minutes, and you could have had something that could tell a Silly Symphony-esq story. Wonderful track.

OCR02973 - Super Mario 64 "Devastation's Duel"
nitrozsz replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Bowser had some of his best themes in Super Mario 64. Excellent way of bringing those themes together into one neat little package. The glitch drums were amazing, and the orchestra-rock presentation worked so well. Not sure if the jazz part was necessary, given that it was only brief, but it’s still an excellent track. -
OCR02974 - Super Mario 64 "Wings to the Sky"

I feel like I’m listening to Daft Punk when I hear this track. The samples and the loops were well executed, as they didn’t feel annoying or distracting to the track itself. It’s such a fun and mellow electronic track. You can dance to it, you can chill to it, it’s great for nearly any occasion. -
OCR02966 - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time "Hey, Listen"
nitrozsz replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I was worried that if I heard the original “Hey, Listen” sample, I would hate it. But I love how it was used in this track. I love that this track took “Hey, Listen” and turned it into a code for “wait for the beat to DROP.” And boy does the beat drop when Navi tells you to listen (most of the time anyway). But after the beat is done dropping, we’re back to mellow and slow. It’s kind of odd, but definitely worth listening to for the beat drops. -
OCR02952 - Gunstar Heroes "Loadout (Single-Player Edit)"
nitrozsz replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Yeah I agree with djpretzel on not getting a narrative vibe with this track. But I did get a “prepare for a great adventure which could easily be narrated” vibe at least. If there was ever a concert of Gunstar Heroes arrangements, I could see this being the opening number, to pump you up for the excitement that is Gunstar Heroes. It’s a fun track, and given the source material, it is the perfect length. Not too long, or too short. -
OCR02901 - Perfect Dark "Killing Hope"
nitrozsz replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
What a strange and eerie track that progressively gets weirder and stranger. It’s almost as if Akira Yamaoka did the soundtrack to Perfect Dark. It’s an atmospheric track that will make you feel lost, frightened, and helpless. Perhaps with a title like “Killing Hope” that was the intent. I wasn’t sure if I liked it, but by the end of the track, I loved it. Definitely not what I would expect from something inspired by Perfect Dark. -
OCR02897 - Sparkster (GEN) "Rawk-It Night"
nitrozsz replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Metal. So metal. Personally, I would have maybe turned the rhythm guitars down a tad cause at parts it sounded like the rhythm and lead guitar had the same balance. But that’s just a nitpick on my end. It’s still a great track. -
OCR02885 - Final Fantasy VI "Go-Go Gadget Gonkulator"
nitrozsz replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Final Fantasy: Anatevka First thing that came to mind when I started listening to this track. Then we warp from “Anatevka” to the carnival described in the bio for this track. I absolutely loved the bouncy organ. It made me only want to write “DOWNLOAD THIS NOW” and that’s it. It’s that good. Seriously, stop reading and download this if you haven’t already. -
OCR02882 - MiG-29 "Power Glove (It's So Bad)"
nitrozsz replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Oh hello Dj CUTMAN, wasn’t expecting to find you at the bottom of the reviews thread. This track belongs in a club, rave, party, convention, basically it needs to be blasted through a lot of speakers in a room full of party goers. A single person listening to this by him/herself won’t do. It could for some people maybe, but I would rather hear this track at an event than through my computer or phone by myself. -
This definitely has a vintage OCR track vibe to it. It’s a nice, and unique take on the overworld. It is kind of repetitive though. I can tell that there was some attempt at making each “loop” a little more varied (like the transition between the second and third “loop”), but it wasn’t enough keep it from not being repetitive, so it was a little disappointing for me. But I could still hear this at a club or rave and not be bored.

OCR02870 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "Dead Raggening"
nitrozsz replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Oh God, Screech! I will never forgive you for how many lives you made me lose to your stupid race! Anyway…. This is a very creative remix. I actually liked the slow three and a half minute build-up more than the crescendo at the end, which in comparison to the rest of the track, wasn’t as interesting. The kick bass during the first minute was really good, and in an odd way, soothing. It’s definitely aggressive ambient. -
Now this is an excellent example of how to make an original game track your own, while simultaneously capturing the spirit of the original track. What I mean is, this sounds like a very modern, and very well produced interpretation of an old school brawler track. Everything from the intro to the end of the track worked so brilliantly. The guitars did an excellent job transitioning from rhythm guitar to lead guitar. When it was in rhythm guitar mode, it didn’t try to overpower the other instruments playing the main melodies. Brilliant work all around.

OCR02858 - Super Spike V'Ball "Copacabana Beach"
nitrozsz replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
First of all, this track is too good for SNL Second, this is perfect jazz lounge room music. I love how the low chords from the brass instruments are used. The way the instruments are panned is brilliantly done. It’s like you’re actually sitting there watching this performed live. My only complaint, and it’s a very very very tiny complaint for this track, is that it’s too short. At least for my tastes. Three minutes might be enough for some, but I could totally jam to this for another twenty minutes personally. -
OCR02788 - Sonic CD (JP) "Two Futures"
nitrozsz replied to Liontamer's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Two futures: One good, one bad. But if both futures of Stardust Speedway can be represented perfectly with one piece of music, it would have to be this. The transitions from upbeat and funky to chill and mellow are so smooth, and almost seamless in a way that it doesn’t sound distracting. I loved the sirens. Really helped add to the tension the possibility of a bad future. -
I finished writing review 200 on Word last night. Will PM you once they're all actually posted here
