  1. Hello everyone, I have made a medley of the three American fighters from Street Fighter II (Balrog, Ken, and Guile). I thought it might be appropriate as this time of year seems to get overlooked in themes, but I also don't want to overshadow the reason for the season. Thanksgiving is traditionally and American holiday, so I thought I'd bring in an anthem worthy of a world warrior. I'm happy to be in a position to submit for feedback as I am pretty proud of how this has turned out so far. Thank you for listening.

Hello! I am a contributor/staff member over at vgleadsheets.com. Over there, we are doing something similar, although it is more strictly based off of the real book in style, and aims to recreate the original music as closely as possible. That mentioned:

Almost all of my concerns are due with readability and ease of use.

I would find things in this format more difficult to use for most purposes than a standard lead sheet. The exception would be for arrangers. Having 4 staves, while good for being comprehensive, is not the best for sight reading in a group situation. I am part of the school of thought that when arranging or creating new versions of tunes, you don't need to use every bit of material for the original. For this, a lead sheet with just melody and chord changes would be more than sufficient. In jam settings, like the jamclinic at MAGfest, it is common to use the tune, but completely reharmonise it in different styles on the fly. This is not uncommon, and having the extra staves would be much more harmful than helpful in this scenario.

But, as I said, something in this format would be a godsend for arrangers who like to have as much information as possible (or those studying the tunes for theoretical purposes). This is a much larger group of arrangers in the scene.

I am unsure why you would use X noteheads for the bass voice. Originally, I thought it might just be the rhythm of the bass parts, then use the chord symbol to fill it in, but since the pitches are absolute, it makes no sense to use them as X noteheads.

Accuracy of melody and harmony I have no comments on. You did a solid job transcribing the tune, and were accurate with the accompaniment figures. I have no doubt that you would have a high level of accuracy in the rest of the tunes in your book.

The presentation and polish is also there. It is nice to see that a noticeable amount of effort was put into making it as clean and readable as possible.

    Nice work!

Thank you for the feedback! I'll definitely take your advice to heart. I'll probably omit the X'd note heads in the bass, my initial plan was rhythm notation for chords players too, but that seems pretty unclear. Probably no hard in just having a literal bass line.

That said, I do want to keep my theme of 4 staves/lines as that seems to be the boundaries in which my project is defined. I do have a question:

"Is there any point in me continuing this project if there is already such a comprehensive list of lead sheets already available?"

I know you said that more arrangers may find this info useful, and if that is the case, I'd like to continue to work on these charts in an attempt to get them to the people who could benefit from their existence. I see some potential for classical musicians looking for solos/duets with accompaniment as well, not just improvisers.

Could you help me find a community of people that would benefit from these? Would you consider allowing me to contribute some charts to VGLeadSheets.com under the proper formatting? I've noticed that some charts I'll be working on aren't already included in your library and I could provide a closer "Real Book" version for review, if possible.

Thank again for taking time to review my work!

  3. Hi everyone, I'm not sure if this is the right place for this post, but this is a bit of an "art" project to me. I've been making a VGM "Fake Book" (it's like a compilation of charts with rhythm notation, chord charts, and two monophonic voices harmonized in a typical jazz arrangement style), and I wanted to share the progress with OCR in case anyone could get some use out of it. I suppose, in some sense, this is my "visual art project" relating to game music.

It is a labor of love, so it is incomplete but entries are always being added to it. I'm in the phase of adding the finalized products to the book (many pieces are already transcribed/reharmonized and just lacking final draft) and would love some feedback from the community. I'm not making the whole book available to the public, but I'd like to share some excerpts and see what you think!

    Table of contents:

I've included a .pdf file of "Dark World" from A Link to the Past. You'll notice that my sheets are made into two main sections:

"Head" Think of the top line as the main melody, second line as optional harmony/counterpoint.

"Vamp" The top line is what most of the accompaniment is providing in the source recordings, but re-voiced/re-harmonized in some instances that I found necessary. I didn't just sit with these pieces and add "7"s to every chord to make it "jazz". The basslines are an attempt to make a 1-1 transference of some bass lines if I find them particularly iconic (it may not be up to me to judge), but may be simplified in some places for "ease of use". The notes are written with an "X" instead of a traditional note-head because I wanted these to indicate rhythm as well, not just pitch.

There are chords notated above the top line of the "Vamp". I believe them all to be accurate and have taken some liberties (but nothing too out there) where I heard implied harmony. I was mostly looking out for improvisers and guitarists.

The idea was to have the pieces as informative as possible, while also making a clean and comprehensive chart that is easy to sight read. You can take this info and rearrange it for so many mixed groups!

I am looking for feedback in the following areas:

    Ease of Use

    Accuracy of Melody

    Harmonic Interpretation

    Legibility/Comprehension

Anyone taking the time to review and critique would have my personal thanks and I'd be happy to provide them more sheets for their time (if interested).

    Thank you!

Just letting everyone know that I'm working on my Area 6 arrangement heavily before giving it off to performers. Contacting a few people to see if they're interested in helping critique; I think it's really going to come to life after all the advice I've got and a ton of listening to a few Jazz albums.

Also just so everyone knows, I'm going to be opening... a lot more performer slots. Like, double what I had before.

Excellent! Looking forward to hearing it

  5. This is really cool! I'm loving the idea you have with this. In my opinion, I get the doomy/sludge vibe off of this. It's unsettling, harmonically interesting, and makes a good foundation. Since you're going for a cover and not really a remix, I'd say this is accurate because the theme itself doesn't offer much variation. What you COULD do (if you were into this sort of thing), is try to take advantage of the repetition with layers. Layering seems to be your friend in repetitive pieces. Perhaps introduce a lo-fi interpretation of the riff, add the double tracked guitars, use some harmonically inspired texture in a pad or extra guitar, and experiment with making a haunting, legato melody instead of a shred section. I like Nika's input, but as a guitarists, it is too easy to let that be our answer to a bland musical moments. Be the "voice" and the backing band and I think you'll have a solid interpretation of this piece without needing to add quotes from Wart's theme (unless you want to and by all means do!).

  6. Hi everyone! I was recently sent this direction as a potential collaborator and wanted to see if anyone needed some of my instrumental services? I'm working on some tracks on the Star Fox anniversary album and am taking on some claims there so I am probably too busy to dedicate myself to whole track, but would happily lay some tracks down on arrangements made here! Electric/acoustic guitars, Tenor/alto saxophones, some brass, some folk instruments (tin whistle, harmonica), mandolin, and bass guitar You can check out some of my arrangements of other video game themes on my artist profile if interested. Thanks!

Claimed! Thanks again, Pichu's Dad - really appreciate all the work you are doing for us!

Just so you know: as we have passed the first deadline, I'm only going to require a WIP from you for the next one, but a complete WIP is still required for July. This rule will be the same for all new claims moving forward.  Of course, shoot me a PM if you have any questions or concerns.

You are welcome! Thanks for having me on board. I'm going to have a WIP for you very soon!

Oh, man! I'm already so HYPED to hear what you'll come up with on that one -- it's like it was written for you to arrange. If you're gonna make this baby your own like you did for "Records" -- which I hope -- it will surely be a BLAST!!

Let me know if you need help or assistance for anything ;)

Hey thanks! I am really excited about working on it. I'm making some rough ideas on drum tracks, but those are certainly not my forte. If you're interested, I'd love to have you work with me on this one. I'm going to make a rough draft of my idea and I'll send it to you and see if it inspires any creative ideas. Looking forward to hearing what this thing will turn into.

No problem. I have removed you from the performers list.

Hello and Happy 2017 everyone! I hope everyone is refreshed (or at least done being hung over) and ready to compose with all your new toys for music! :)

Just so everyone knows, I am behind in getting feedback out to everyone so if you haven't received anything from me yet, please be patient - unless of course, you've requested that we hold off on giving you feedback, in which case we'll send you a PM once you are confident enough with the WIP for review. I guess that 3-5/day was a little ambitious. Live and learn!

    We have three outstanding claims:

I really don't have much excuse to not have something at this point, other than being busy with whatever time I can find trying to review everyone else's tracks. All I can say is that I am subject to my own rules and have a month to submit something or my claim will be open. I am hoping that Prominion and Trev will have something to me soon, as they are under the same rules ...

A couple of reminders moving forward:

    • For next check-in, progress must be confirmed (new WIP required). Completed tracks are requested, but not required.
    • I plan to submit this project for OCR approval within the next four months. I have set a goal for the project of 16 complete (not finished) tracks to submit with. I currently have 4 tracks I have labelled complete and 1 labelled finished; if anyone is wondering what I mean by that, a complete track 'is a track with a full framework; one that has a beginning, a middle, and an end that are clearly defined.' This does not mean the structure is set in stone; that would be a finished track, which should only require minor mixing adjustments. 11 more complete tracks needed to complete the goal.
    • I've had to take down Sargasso Space Zone and Fichina, as their tracks have been claimed in other areas.  There are still a few tracks I would like to see on the album:
      • Great Fox Theme
      • The Awesome Black Hole (map select music can be included)
      • Meteor Base (SF or SF2)
      • Out of this Dimension (for the truly brave)
    • ...and another reminder that character and boss themes are still available to claim as well. 5 more tracks to be claimed before we reach our goal of 32 claims.
    • The Andross remix is still looking for volunteers, if anyone is bored or having a mental block on their remix. Sequencing/building the framework is our current priority - a few people have said they'd be in like Flynn once we have something in place. I know not much has happened on this yet, but I still want to get everyone in on this, so please, any help you could provide would be appreciated!

    Here's to a great 2017, everyone - let's make some music! :D

I'd like to claim Meteor Base! I'm also interested in Out of this Dimension but I'm going to wait a bit and see if anyone else claims it. I need to get some work done on other tracks!

    which ones? and awesome!

I've got tenor/alto saxophones, clarinet, trumpet, Native American flutes/ocarinas, electric bass, electric and acoustic guitar, mandolin, tin whistle, harmonicas, a trombone, a french horn, banjo, keyboards, etc... Lots of stuff at varying levels of skill on my part. Could get creative and make something weird or isolate a few instruments I'm proficient at (sax/guitars/tin whistle/mandolin) and make something a little more comprehensive. Just let me know if you want any!

    Really? That's awesome :)

I'd like us to be done with the recording sessions as soon as possible so I'm gonna hunt down a drummer next week -- if anyone in this thread can provide drum though, show yourself quickly before I start my search!

By the way, Lauren, did you find a way to record MIDI performances with your keyboard? Otherwise, I might need to ask for someone else to play the piano for us too.

I'm afraid I cannot provide a MIDI of that "Records" cover either -- threw away all the sequences that were replaced by Jameson's performance (only the drums, synths and piano remain) :(

I actually still have the midi you sent me in my project file, so no worries!

Definitely! Depending on who's interested and can give me good quality, I could make this arrangement much larger in an ez. Sheet music is how I typically get things done for games, lol.

Sounds awesome! Feel free to send me anything you have parts wise and have stuff available for solo sections, let me know! I've got a few instruments lying around... Haha

Thanks, Thirdkoopa! Anyone else need some horn from @JohnStacy for their tracks?

    ----

@Starphoenix has given me an update of Cyber Attack using the feedback he got. Sounding better all the time!

@Thirdkoopa has given me permission to post his WIP, Contemplating the End (working title). This is a very interesting slow jazz take on Area 6 ... brimming with performer potential!

@classic_gamer_76 and @TheChargingRhino have sent me another WIP of Records 1 including some work by @Pichu's Dad. Sounds great, love the variety of instrument leads here!

Check them out, let us know what you think!

Gonna try to have a WIP today of some stuff I wanna do on Records!

@Thirdkoopa are you by chance opening up the track for instrumental solos? I'd like to take a crack at one if you're considering the opportunity!
