GCJ reacted to MindWanderer in CastleMania - A Castlevania/Pro Wrestling Concept Album
To quote DarkeSword's original pitch for the album:
Here are a couple of YouTube playlists with examples of entrances and theme songs.  Also here are some sample diva theme songs for female wrestlers.
You may notice that the presentation isn't just a song and a walk-on when the wrestler is introduced at an event.  There's usually an introduction of some kind: sometimes a different piece of music, sometimes some kind of cheesy action sequence, sometimes just commentator banter.  So we'll be making two different versions of this album: One "clean" version with just the wrestler themes, and one "event" version with all that extra stuff.  This means that if you want to compose a short intro remix (30-90 seconds) to go with your main mix, that's an option--and an interesting chance to work with a very short source and a total lack of transition.
Director: MindWanderer Co-Director: Chernabogue Check-In Dates:
    July 31, 2016 Nov. 20, 2016 April 15, 2017 July 15, 2017 Sept. 30, 2017 March 31, 2018
    ReMixers
First, we need ReMixers!  Specifically, we need remixers who can produce songs that would work as wrestler intros.  There's a fairly wide range of potential genres, but they're all loud, powerful, energetic, and epic.  The playlists linked above are non-exhaustive examples you can use as a starting point.
    Tracklist
Ultimately, I'd like to have an equal number of "faces" (heroes) and "heels" (villains and monsters).  Some monsters come in pairs (The Creature and Igor, the Mummies), and if we use any of them, each one should have a corresponding tag team of heroes; this can either be a mashup of two character themes, or a single theme that covers two characters (e.g. John Morris and Eric Lecarde of Castlevania Bloodlines).  Villain/monster mashups are also possible, counting as a tag team.  Same thing goes for female characters: each female hero should be paired with a female villain.  We can work all that when it gets close to the end, though.
Here's my wish list of wrestlers, along with suggestions as to theme music.  The specific music source for each isn't necessarily set in stone, but it's my opinion as to what the most appropriate choice for them would be.  If you'd like to go in a different direction, I'd love to hear it!

Theme Song of CastleMania: Vampire Killer (Wrestlemania Theme Songs Reference) Simon Belmont: Theme of Simon Belmont Alucard: Dracula's Castle and/or The Tragic Prince - @mikedm92 Dracula: Dance of Illusions - @Chernabogue Death: Evil's Symphonic Poem (optionally: Heart of Fire) Other Suggestions:

Available Claimed Early WIP Substantial WIP Complete draft Final WAV So far we have a lot of rock/metal represented, and I'm not sure how many of those will include vocals (highly recommended), and just one confirmed rap.  I'd also really like at least one Mexican-inspired remix (making one wrestler a luchador), one orchestral remix, and at least one explicit tribute to Xavier Woods (which includes funk, rap, and even EDM).  Female wrestlers' themes are typified by female vocalists, either rap or heavily autotuned.  More rap would also be great.
Posted or accepted-to-be-posted remixers can just make a claim and dive right in.  Anyone else, I'll need an audition of your most best, most appropriate work for the style we're looking for.
    Collaboration Resource List
Anyone interested in collaborating, let me know what you want to do and I'll put you on the list.  Electric guitarists and vocalists are especially needed.
Electric Guitar: @HeavenWraith, @Tuberz McGee, @Cyril the Wolf, @Laarx Acoustic Guitar: @Cyril the Wolf, @Laarx Vocals (male): @Cyril the Wolf Vocals (rap): Wanted Voice Actors
For the "event" version of the album, we'll need some voice actors.  At the very least, we'll need 3: an announcer and two commentators.  The wrestlers can, optionally, have monologues during their own songs, or dialogues with their opponents.  We'll recruit for these when all music is at least at the substantial WIP stage
    Mastering
Kind of goes without saying, but not without doing.  Somewhat more involved in this than in most albums, since this person will be responsible for layering on the voiceovers and any audience effects.
    Art
In addition to front and back cover art, I'd really like to have character art of each of the wrestlers.  My personal vision is that none of the wrestlers actually be monsters, just actors dressed up like them, or even just vaguely related to them thematically.  Real pro wrestling has wrestlers like "The Rock," "The Snake," and even "Boogeyman," so having monster names seems perfectly appropriate.

I agree with Larry that the vocal samples are way overused, I disagree on the "Float like a butterfly"  usage sounding bad, the way it's sped up.  Repetitive sample usage aside, I felt the mix itself felt pretty barebones and not full enough.  Some of the instrumentation ends up sounding very simplistic and of not the greatest sample quality.  I think this needs more developing, maybe using the samples in different ways and slicing those samples into new patterns throughout the track to keep them from getting too repetitive, and getting the instrumentation to sound more full and complete.

I'm on the fence here. I thought the track was pretty creative, especially considering how pretty much all of the vocal clips fit pretty well into the track. That being said, I do think they end up being overused here. Along with that, certain clips end up being a lot lower in volume compared to "I don't understand what's going on here" which was very prominent, to the point of being distracting. I think adjusting the volume on those clips might help bring a little more focus onto the music as well, while still being a focus. There's a lot of variation here, but I feel like there are a lot of elements here that add up to making the track sound pretty repetitive. I think the constant sound wall of words is the biggest factor, but a lot of the other elements are used gratuitously.
I think it's pretty close here, but needs a few adjustments to bring down the repetitiveness a touch and to make the track a little more varied. Good luck on the rest of the vote!

I'm a bit more in favor of this than Larry was--there's a lot going on here that I think works really well, and I actually thought your use of the samples as instruments was pretty effective.  However, it's also definitely true that the organ and the orchestra hits were really thin and not effective as lead instruments.  The MIDI electric guitar wasn't much better.  And the arrangement also does feel repetitive by the time you get to about the halfway mark, due to a general lack of variation in instrumentation, style, and melody.
I definitely think this is worth pursuing, but for me, the leads need some attention and the arrangement modified to be more dynamic.

From a standards perspective, the voice clips are abundant, but the cutoff to me if whether or not the track leans on the voice clip usage as the connection to the source tunes. Here, that's not a problem because the entire instrumental was made by the submitting artist, and that arranged those 2 sources. So even if you eliminated the voice clips, you'd have a Jet Grind Radio arrangement here.
So like I said, I don't have an inherent huge problem with this using the voice clips, though to me, it's a bit egregious/overdone in this track. And I say that knowing we have an OC ReMix that already used that approach with HappyBivouac's "Late Night Sneakin'" way back in 2004, just not as over the top. For example, with the sped up voice clip of "Float Like a Butterfly" first used at 1:15, it just sounds like it's sped up and crammed in just to fit the tempo, and that doesn't sound good, IMO.
    There's a click/pop around :44 that should be fixed.
Focusing on just the instrumental, it's noticeably thin, particularly during the sections employing the orch stabs and organ. I like the all of the bassline, guitar noodling, and breakbeat sampling, but the orch stabs and organ sound really thin and low-quality, which left the track sounding sparse for too long. I mean, once you get to :50, the instrumental's texture was as full as the track ever got. And at 2:07, I felt like I was just hearing the same sections of the instrumental recycled from :50 for the rest of the piece, when the track is pretty short.
For me, the instrumental's well in the right direction, but needs more fullness, particularly through improved sound quality/depth/realism from the organ and orchestral stabs. The execution of the "Float Like a Butterfly" should fit more comfortably here, whether that's by reducing the clip or using it in more creative ways, and the overall voice clip usage is too busy -- and again, I understand the style you're going for. You could tone some of that back. You should also include more variation/ideas with how you're arranging "Sneakman"; don't get so cut-and-paste happy with the music and see what other creativity can be done there for the final minute. Good start so far, Caleb. See if you can polish and refine this.

This is a bit of a strange case. I'm split on the samples on this one - the vocal samples are from the source track, re-sampled and rearranged above an arrangement that ISN'T sampled from the source (though still sounding sampled itself, stylistically). I'm not sure whether this counts as "Too much sampling from the original source" or not, since the sampling is basically from SFX that are in the music. We've taken tracks that sample a lot of game SFX before, and this is sort of half-way between that and sampling the music itself, so... Yeah. Not sure where we should take this one, myself, so I just said 'Fuck it' and paneled it.
All that aside, as far as the track goes on its own it's a pretty cool arrangement. The samples are pretty percussive in their use, which helps fit them into the track, though I would say it's excessive at a few places - "I said it before" isn't percussive enough to repeat as much as it is in this track, in particular. Most of those samples make up a pretty cool series of patterns that is really catchy. The sampled orchestra hits are pretty weak in this - they don't have very much presence, in comparison to the other instruments, which just makes them feel weak.
The production on this is pretty solid, though. The mixing could've brought the sampling vocals down a bit while bringing out the other instruments more, but it's not something that breaks the piece, either. Yeah, pending on others opinions on that sampling I could pass this, but that's honestly a make-or-break issue. Not sure how to rule on this one - other opinions on that point would be appreciated.
EDIT (04/05): Larry's clarification made sense to me, so I'll go with that. I think there are elements that could be better, but I didn't think those broke the track, so I'll give it my thumbs up. If it gets sent back, though, pay attention to those thin samples that you use.

I know this is pretty late. Even though no one's probably gonna read this, here are my thoughts! I did all songs for rounds 5-8.
    ROUND 5
    -Ballade v King Knight-
Dewey Newt - 100% Epic. This arrangement uses the themes in a way I never would have thought of. The parts are well used and wow does it sound good. The last part especially sounds really good. Not much to say other than well done. Gario - I love how the atmosphere is immediatly set here. The synths are well used, although the lead is a bit jarring when it first comes in. There's a lot more of the sad sound of Ballade than the epicness of King Knight, and yet both are very clear. Very well-arranged. It seems just a bit repetitive, but not really enough to bother me. The robot sounds were really good too, along with that beginning arp they set the mood of the piece very nicely. -Uranus v Wandering Travelers-
JohnStacy - FIESTA! The themes here are so well integrated it's crazy. The arrangement is really good, and I love that piano part and the big brass parts. I like some of the reharmonization, it gives the piece a really nice, jazzy vibe to it. Chiwalker - The themes weren't very recognizeable at first, but as soon as the arp came it with the power saw lead, the arrangement seems to fall more into place. It's a bit simplistic at times, but overall this is a very nice dance take on the two themes. -Saturn v Polar Knight-
TheShaggyFreak - There is a lot of dissonance here, although a lot of that is due to the original composition of Polar Knight. I like the intro here, it's one of the best parts for me. It may be just me, but I feel like there's a part missing for most of the song. Although, it's a very somber take on the themes which is very unexpected, so props for creativity. ROUND 6
    -Enker v Specter Knight-
PlanarianHugger - Pretty good integration of the themes, although sometimes a few things sound slightly off-key, probably problems with the chords not matching at times. The melodies seem to work well together for the most part, and there are some really good parts here, like when the arp part takes the lead, and the harmonization of the melody soon after. Sometimes the switching of leads is a bit jarring, and not each part transitions very smoothly, but there's a lot of variation and a lot of it is pretty good arrangement wise. Starphoenix - There are a lot of really cool sounds here, and each part transitions well, but I can't get a grasp on the key. It seems like it would be a really good arrangement if each part was kept in the same key as the others. More than half of the song seems to have parts that clash with each other and although this does start to get a bit better as the song goes on, it repeats the intro which was more jarringly off-key than any other part of the song, so even with the cool glitchy outro, the end just sounds weird and unresolved. If the key was the same across all parts I'm sure this would be a really good entry. -Pluto v Shield Knight-
GCJ - Too much 80s. What were you thinking? -Punk v Mole Knight-
Xenonetix - I like the piano arrangement idea and it's done really well here. Maybe it's just me, but I hear a lot more of Mole Knight than I do of Punk, but the themes are integrated well and flow together nicely. I don't know if it's just reverb, but it sounds like the pedal is down the whole time and is never brought up to make sure notes don't last into the next chord if they don't mesh well. This isn't a problem for most of the arrangement, but when the left hand part is doing the super fast arp-sounding part, it's a bit messy. That ending slow-down part sounds really nice though. ROUND 7
    -Mercury v Propeller-
Thirdkoopa - The parts were confusing. I couldn't tell if they were in different keys for half of it, or where the beat was, and the arrangement seems kind of all over the place. I'm not really sure where each piece was played, although I could hear the lead from Mercury playing very quietly at the background at one point which sounded nice. -Venus v Shovel Knight-
Jorito - I love the integration of the themes here. Even if most of the background is just chords, the melodies are mixed so well and I love the instrumentation. I don't know what that sound is at 3:08, but it just sets such a nice atmosphere. This arrangement is really good and gets better as the song goes on. Also those lyrics are pretty good. Megadrive - A good dance beat. I like the arrangement here, these melodies flow pretty nicely together. Also I really like those bell sounds. A little more variation in the bass and drums would have been nice, since the bass playing almost the same rhythm the entire time, and the drums only seem to vary in whether the snare is playing or not, even if there are a few tom rolls that keep it from getting too stale. ROUND 8
Chiwalker Knight v Mars - These songs fit really well into a dance song! It's not always very complex arrangement-wise, but I like the use of the arp during the less complex parts, and when it builds up with all the different parts it gets really good. Xenonetix Knight v Saturn - A bit on the repetitive side, but delicious and groovy. That was pretty long. Anyways, lots of good entries! Very fun and enjoyable to listen to all of them.

    Welcome to the voting stage
The mixing stage is over. This round has 3 songs and 1 bonus mix by PlanarianHugger. The following people compete against each other
    Dex
    GCJ
    Dewey Newt
(if you want a different color, let me know by replying or sending me a PM). I won’t use the pictures anymore since I have issues by getting them at this page).

    To vote, do the following:
    ·       Visit the stated ThaSauce Page and listen to all the entries.
    ·       Scroll to the form at the bottom of the screen or click PM.
    ·       Fill in the entries from first to third in the ThaSauce form or fill in your top 3. Participants only need to fill in the first and second box.
    ·       State a reasoning for it.
    ·       Do not vote for PlanarianHugger, his track is a bonus.
    ·       Participants are encouraged to vote and leave feedback. However, they may not vote for themselve, they get a free first place if they vote, so it's attractive for the results. Non participants are encouraged to vote to decide the winner and leave comments.
    ·       PlanarianHugger has a vote that counts twice.
    ·       Always look in this thread to find out who's the winner of the round after the voting stage instead of only looking at ThaSauce for the results. Especially since some people might vote by sending me a PM.
You have until THIS Monday, May 22nd 10:59 AM ThaSauce time (18:00 UTC, 19:00 GMT) to vote.
If you vote by PM make sure that your top 3 (or top 2 for participants) is clear. I prefer something like this:
    (To)
Bundeslang (if you follow the link you won’t have to add my name).

I will post the feedback given in the PM’s and the votes in this thread. The winner may choose the source tune for PRC350.

Check the ThaSauce Page to vote or click here to send a PM.
