  1. It's Eino's round, so his call I know more or less what he has in mind, and I think it could be an appropriate but unexpected response, even if it prolly won't have raps, and the subtleness of the response might be a bit lost on these raging rappers
  2. ... on the plus side all the censoring stuff did make for one of these cool musical tricks you refer to in your lyrics Really liked that little gimmicky bit, almost more than my own gimmick! We had some ideas floating around for some raps too, unfortunately didn't get around to it. Awell, there's always next compo.
  3. Dem epic rap battle! Maverick Astley, doing things untold, so be afraid you'll again get rickrolled The Astley reference definitely perked up my ears, looking forward to the full lyrics!
  4. I wonder if people will actually find out all 3 Rickroll references in my track (1 pretty obvious one and 2 subtle ones)... Also not gonna post a source breakdown this time,. Just finished doing the analysis for my own purposes, it was pretty educational and I have more source usage than I expected
  5. I essentially approach my DAW as my instrument and embrace the limitless possibilities it gives. So to me the sky is the limit and any style and genre is possible. Sure, that can make it overwhelming at times, but it also makes you grow if you try to do (your version of) a genre you never tried before. I would personally out with something "hey, what if I create a drum & bass or dubstep track"... or "let's create a reggae track", or "how would this sound as a chiptune?". That makes me want to listen to these genres for inspiration, read a bit about general elements and instrumentation of the genre which helps me learn and grow. I also find that doing competitions here is a good way to learn quickly, with short deadlines and sources that you probably wouldn't have picked yourself. It's a great way to get out of your comfort zone. Heck, since becoming more active on OCR I've done quite a few remixes of games I never played and that really helped expand my horizon. So TL;DR: force yourself to make something in other genres
  6. Subbed! I started without inspiration and energy on this track, which left me with a bunch of disconnected ideas in bad shape. I think the final track turned out pretty well, but it's still not connected too well for my taste and the mixing is also a bit rough at places. Awell, blame the deadline; maybe I'll pick it up again later
  7. I blame Eino and Tuberz for coming up with the team name and making me join in on it. The alternative was getting tubed Having said that, don't feed them this kind of inspiration, it's at your own risk!
  8. Me too. Since I figured that there's sometimes less time for voting because it takes a while to get the music up (and because community participation might be more important than strict rules) I didn't take it into account. Darke's compo, Darke's rules & scoring; my sheet just aims to get a bit of insight in what we've all been doing these last weeks
  9. Well spotted, it's because I misinterpreted that rule I thought all members of the team had to vote for a bonus to take place. Awell, I did say it was unofficial and likely to contain mistakes *edit* I looked into it and incorporated the team bonuses. Hope I didn't make any mistakes. There were also 2 ties, and basically I gave the one with the most votes the higher score. Might not be correct, but hey, it is unofficial!
  10. Nah, after subtly rickrolling the OCR community for weeks already I figured to be a nice guy for a change and just step out of the normal SFRG mode. I think 9 subsequent weeks of rickrolling is enough
  11. So to satisfy my own curiosity I did some tallying myself for rounds 1-7. Here's a totally unofficial overview the current rankings that may or may not include some mistakes, but hey, it's better than nothing https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZQn-hNzduuB_psFbiZgNIr4FrjczjSBBb3auW26gH80/pubhtml#
  12. Jorito Flight of the Peacock (Cyber Peacock in Observatory Hall [X]) Go Ahead And Jump (Vanishing Gungaroo in Observatory Hall) Brewing Beerliever (Blizzard Buffalo in Observatory Hall [X]) Maverick Astley
  13. Bumping this up; it would be great to see which teams will be battling for the compo victory and eternal fame and glory in the epic last round! (and yes, it's a bit selfish too, I'd like to see how Maverick Astley is doing )
  14. Oh yeah, voting. Busy week and struggling with my track for this round (which started uninspired and disconnected but might actually be enjoyable before the deadline). Thanks for the reminder though
  15. Good to hear! It'll probably take a few weeks before I can start with this, but know that I'm planning to join in. I do agree with Chernabogue about the 2-week checkin (4 weeks would be my sweet spot for quality progress time vs nagging reminders), but your album, your rules For me it mostly means finding a less busy time before committing.
  16. Heh, somehow missed this. Dig the concept! I'm a bit too busy atm to make a claim and join, but I do have a question. I'm oldskool and an MSX home computer fan so I'd be interested in doing a King's Valley 2 remix. Does it qualify? It's an 8 bit puzzle game by Konami with an archeologist exploring pyramids in Egypt and features some cool Egyptian music that just begs for a remix. Here's a video with some gameplay and music:
  17. I also can't wait to hear what Jorito comes up with. It'd better be good, or else...
  18. I also don't think about it when making music; it's mostly an after-the-fact breakdown for me. The track I make goes the direction it wants to go in, I'm really not thinking about having enough source usage. Apart from that, I find it also pretty educational to see what I did in retrospect. I can imagine from a judges' perspective that they want some objective measures to see if a track isn't too original for posting on OCR. I also don't find the "need minimum X% of source" in there particularly good, but it's not the only criteria they use and I think they are pretty flexible about it. Awell, let's just agree to disagree, and everybody lives happily ever after
  19. I basically do it for 2 reasons: show you guys where I used which parts of which source (which is helpful for voting if you're not fully familiar with the sources) and I'm considering submitting (some of) them to OCR. For the latter a source breakdown + an idea of the amount of source reference (like timaeus did in percentages) helps out the judges and it also gives you an idea if you have enough source usage in there (if you don't have a lot of source usage, chances are the judges won't accept it)
  20. It's vst; unfortunately Joe (XPRTNovice) was too busy to help out on such short notice. The sax is from NI Session Horns Pro, the solo alto sax. Guess I was too subtle For completeness sake, here's 4 sneaky references: the intro (0:00-0:03) lead the chorus (e.g. 1:03-1:32) has a 'never gonna give' backing vocal; also heard in the break starting from 2:17 the last verse (3:01) has 'never gonna give you up' backing vocals; probably too subtle to hear the last verse also has this sub lead that plays the 'Never Gonna Give You Up' chorus lead I'll get it cleaned up after-compo (there's some timing issues and the mix needs some more TLC) and submit it to the judges to find out what they think about it.
  21. And don't feel afraid to get Tubed; as long as he gets fed funk, he is happy
  22. Any logs for us poor sleeping stragglers? On a related note: I think these listening parties are good fun to keep the spirit of the compo up, to enjoy some nice bantering and, as a participant, get some cool feedback on your track Entertaining and I learn stuff from it every time, if even only through the logs.
