I essentially approach my DAW as my instrument and embrace the limitless possibilities it gives. So to me the sky is the limit and any style and genre is possible. Sure, that can make it overwhelming at times, but it also makes you grow if you try to do (your version of) a genre you never tried before.

I would personally out with something "hey, what if I create a drum & bass or dubstep track"... or "let's create a reggae track", or "how would this sound as a chiptune?". That makes me want to listen to these genres for inspiration, read a bit about general elements and instrumentation of the genre which helps me learn and grow.

I also find that doing competitions here is a good way to learn quickly, with short deadlines and sources that you probably wouldn't have picked yourself. It's a great way to get out of your comfort zone. Heck, since becoming more active on OCR I've done quite a few remixes of games I never played and that really helped expand my horizon.

So TL;DR: force yourself to make something in other genres

Not going to post a source breakdown this time, but make sure you listen to the bass, melodies, and the arpeggiator for the source usage.

I blame Eino and Tuberz for coming up with the team name and making me join in on it. The alternative was getting tubed

Having said that, don't feed them this kind of inspiration, it's at your own risk!

Next time the Maverick Astley team does a compo, they should find a way to slip in John Cena, seeing as he's the new rick roll.

So to satisfy my own curiosity I did some tallying myself for rounds 1-7. Here's a totally unofficial overview the current rankings that may or may not include some mistakes, but hey, it's better than nothing

Bumping this up; it would be great to see which teams will be battling for the compo victory and eternal fame and glory in the epic last round!

(and yes, it's a bit selfish too, I'd like to see how Maverick Astley is doing )

Not sure if there's more than the 2 Shovel Knight songs by Eino & me in the queue, but a Shovel Knight mixflood might be cool

Hylian and I have talked over about the check-in periods awhile back and I think we'd be pretty okay with extending it to 3 weeks, we don't want a situation where too much time passes between those since we're not really asking for progress on your mixes we just want to hear from you guys on your current life situation, like if you need some time off to deal with other stuff in the mean time.

Heh, somehow missed this. Dig the concept!

I'm a bit too busy atm to make a claim and join, but I do have a question. I'm oldskool and an MSX home computer fan so I'd be interested in doing a King's Valley 2 remix. Does it qualify? It's an 8 bit puzzle game by Konami with an archeologist exploring pyramids in Egypt and features some cool Egyptian music that just begs for a remix. Here's a video with some gameplay and music:

I basically do it for 2 reasons: show you guys where I used which parts of which source (which is helpful for voting if you're not fully familiar with the sources) and I'm considering submitting (some of) them to OCR. For the latter a source breakdown + an idea of the amount of source reference (like timaeus did in percentages) helps out the judges and it also gives you an idea if you have enough source usage in there (if you don't have a lot of source usage, chances are the judges won't accept it)

And now I seem to be working on something which seems to be something pseudo psychedelic rock-ish. I have no idea how I got there, and no, I'm sober (at least now)

Actually the judges on the panel encourage people to post their source usage because its quite possible that someone will miss source usage. People aren't robots who catch everything, if its clear or not. Its not just about whats obvious, its how well the listener knows the source tunes. Don't forget that people who are voting on all the remixes have over 40 sources to memorise. At some point we're going to make mistakes and that could mean the difference between a 1st place, 2nd or 3rd place vote. Saying that the remixer should have done a better job or that the music should speak for itself is silly imo because we're ALL liable to make mistakes no matter how much the remixer has tried to make the sources as clear as possible, particularly with remixes that use more than one source tune. A little nudge in the right direction from the mixer does no harm at all imo.
