Getting by with little musical training
SnappleMan replied to Saragon's topic in Music Composition & Production
Hah, you don't need any training to submit to OCR. Check out the Judges pannel... BUt yeah, "formal" training doesn't really matter. You can pay a teacher for all kinds of lessons but it wont do you any good unless you want to learn. The best thing do to is learn how to teach yourself. You have the internet at your fingertips, spend a week or two researching websites and gathering all the information you can, then set up a daily plan that you will follow. The most important thing you need to do is ditch FL studio. Get rid of all software except maybe a simple tracker, and get yourself access to a keyboard. The easiest way to make music theory stick is to play what you learn and hear how it sounds. Never move on to the next lesson until you can understand the previous one musically. Once you know the concept of scales, chords, melody and harmony, you should get your hands on something like Sonar which works much more naturally than loop based FLStudio and Reason. Your education will never end, but you should have some level of proficiency on the piano by about a years time. This doesn't mean being able to play Chopin and Bach, just knowing what every note is, being able to play a scale, chords, and playing on time. During that first year, you should aim to complete one original song, 5 minutes long, that uses everything you learned. If you can do this, then a year from now you will definetly be a very valuable musician to the OCR scene. -

Submitting this, nomatter the quality of the singing, will get a no. I can promise you that. The music is not up to OCR standards, and again, the lyrics break rhythm so much that it will never sound like one full song. That's overall problem, I think. It SOUNDS like you just singing over some music, your voice does not work as an instrument in the song. -
FFMQ - Benjamin's Fight for Life
SnappleMan replied to Wynd_Balduram's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Hmm, this is the first time I'm listening to this, so lets see. That intro synth, as obnoxious as it is, kinda works when all the guitars come in, no wait, scratch that. it stays irritating. Decent guitar tone all around, but you make some mistakes in the playing and you leave out all the cool sounding fancy parts. The mix seems to be more right focused, you should have either mixed in another guitar track to the left, or balanced the levels better. The drumtrack, while sounding nice, needs to have some more flair, it's too simple and repetitive. I think the mediocre performance and the mixing problem warrants a NO. Still, a good sounding song, you should rework it. -
Haha, Xenogears project... I lol'd

Great idea though. Right now I'm forced use Native Instruments notepad+MML compiler...

I agree, you need some practice!

Final Fantasy 9 'You're Not Alone Vocal Mix'
SnappleMan replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
The most prominent issue with the singing is that it's at a constant level of velocity and volume. The dynamic element is completely lost. If one were to translate the vocal track to a piano track, it would sound like single notes being hit by one finger as hard as possible. You should experiment with singing it softer, at first, then build up to a couple measures of your full voice, that way the ears don't get tired after the first lines. The other (more important) issue is that of the lyrics themselves. The words you chose constantly break rhythm and really ruin the song. You really should consider re-writing the lyrics to match the natural beat values in the song. Considering most of the lyrics use alot of redundant or unnecessary words, this should be fairly simple. -

Your opinion about my feedback is irrelevant. I'm talking about her being a good sport. As soon as I started posting in this topic she sent me a PM telling me to stop cuz she didn't like what I was saying. And quite honestly, feedback I give is equivalent to the quality of the song and the willingness of the artist to accept the opinion of someone who just might help improve them. All I've heard have been excuses "well, it's just for fun" or "My friend made it 2,000 years ago". If the reasons for the song being bad are so trivial, then it should be easy to improve it. Or she can just admit that she's not capable of fixing some of the problems and then we can all start offering her real help that will improve her as a performer and musician. It's just a case of a shattered ego, and I don't like that one bit. -

The harmonies actually help a bit, except when you go high, then it goes out of tune slightly and sounds forced. Also, the lyrics don't match the beat, and sound awkward. -
Oh, the irony... Anyway, Suzu, one of the most important things to do when starting out is to start thinking rhythmically. Singing is just as much about proper timing as it is about pitch and tone. Most amateur vocalist will train to be in tune, but when they actually have to sing something they accent the words wrong and sound uncomfortable singing because they're thinking too hard about singing differently than they speak. Good singing can always turn bad when the words sung are said different than when spoken. Once in a while it's good to change the accent of a word, but for the most part, you should sing naturally, like when speaking. Use notation to write your lyrics on a one line staff. This is a very basic technique but it works wonders if you're just starting out. Take the phrase: "I have a penis waffle." The best way to sing this would be to break up each syllable into a note value. "I" tranlates well to a quarter note "have-a" is best as two eith notes, "pe-nis" two eith notes, "waf" as an eith note as the downbeat of the measure and "fle" as a whole note stretched out over the last measure. Also, dynamics play a very important role. You should learn to bend and modulate your voice, as well as control the volume and expression. Most amateur singers will sing robotically because they figure "Well. I'm on time and in tune, so this singing must be great!"... and end up failing miserably.

Hah, no need to get angry. You wanted feedback, you got some you didn't want to hear. You can either be a child about it and dismiss what I said, or you can take me seriously and try to improve. If you want some detailed advice about what you can do, feel free to instant message me on AIM. I'd be more than happy to try and help you get this to sound okay. -

Oh lord, the singing in this is horrible. Sounds like a bad high school recital. My suggestion to you is to take the singing out. It sounds very faux-operatic, just doesn't work at all. As far as the music goes, it's extremely overcompressed, and it sounds like cheesy karaoke. The arrangement is extremely repetitive and doesn't go anywhere. The drum sounds are pretty bad also. Overall, it seems to me like this song needs a level of work that you're not capable of. I'm sorry to sound rude, but you are a poor singer. If I were you, I'd put this song on hold and take some lessons to try and develop a singing voice. You sound very nassally and generic, and your range is much lower than what you're attempting to sing. Again, sorry this isn't what you want to hear, but the truth is, if you've been working on this song for 2 years and this is the result... you don't really have much hope unless you learn how to properly sing and arrange music. Good luck! -

Electric guitars, strings, and amps -- advice please
SnappleMan replied to MrBogus's topic in Music Composition & Production
Teles suck overall. I can't understand peoples fascinations with such twangy, ugly guitars. A Fender strat is one of the best guitars you can get for the money. And yes, changing gauges on a floyd rose requres truss rod adjustment, bridge adjustment, sping adjustment, penis adjustment and anything else found in a typical setup. -
