  1. Man I hated that level in TMNT. That whole game was hard though; farthest I ever got was beating MekaTurtle and getting to the fourth world. Meh. Anyway. Yeah it's fairly close to the original. I think that sometimes the piece just gets too crowded; there's not much attention paid to balance here. Drums and guitar and everything else; they're all vying for my attention, but I don't know what to listen to. 2:02 is a pretty nice section, but unfortunately the whole piece is kind of washed out and muddy sounding. Crazy drumming like that usually only works when you have a real drummer; that's uber sequenced and overly complicated. Tone it back a bit. NO
  2. Dear God these lyrics are brilliant. Appropriately campy; it's MEGAMAN! Yeah, quite nice all around. Guitar work is good, voice isn't bad at all. Vocal harmony is right on. Very nice. Medleyitis does describe it, but that's quite minor. YES INDEED!
  3. UGH...what's up with the recording? Sounds like you guys were in a box and the microphone was not. The arrangement is not bad. It's got a great groove and a nice interpretation. However, it does get repetitive. There's not much in the way of development as this song progresses. Too bad. NO
  4. Wow, you definitely don't want to use Roland Piano for this. Try NS Piano or something. Way to bright here; sounds like some construction workers smashing a piano with hammers. This sounds very mechanical too; as I mentioned when reviewing another piano piece, the human touch is crucial in solo piano productions. This piece lacks that human touch. There are portions where I feel like one person could not possible play this piece on a piano. Lots of smashing block chords everywhere; it's a bit irritating. Work on humanization and organic...ness....yeah. NO
  5. That drumbeat just doesn't change, and it's a bit loud compared to everything else. Aside from that, the arrangement is pretty static. There's a nice texture, but this piece doesn't really go anywhere. NO
  6. I agree with Vig. You could have done a lot better than just using those choruses. Some nice string work or something would have worked a lot better. The low bass stuff is really nice, but unfortunately it doesn't balance out with the higher stuff and the chorus. NO
  7. Hooray for drumloops. Not much to this. The bass is, like Vig said, too low. If it had some more body to it, it'd sound nice, but it's so negligible at the moment. The synths are kind of thin and weak sounding, and they sound like you just layered as many effects onto them as you could to make them sound interesting. The song really repeats a lot without much variation too. You need to vary up your sounds more, and work on a more interesting arrangement. NO
  8. Eek...I can get better sounds out of WinGroove. This sounds very amateurish. Cymbal hits on every measure; whole note string chords; snare hits on every beat; no harmony to speak of. Rather repetitive too. Too bad though; I really love Coo's Theme. NO
  9. WTF IS THIS SHIT? Oh. Pretty good stuff man. Nice work. Not much to say aside from nice sounds and a good groove. SURE
  10. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT YOU CRAZY PERSON ... >_>
  11. Christ, Larry. What the hell? Anyway, this song has timing issues in SPADES (yes, SPADES!). Mostly in the first half. I actually kind of like the low-q recording in the beginning; makes it feel a bit old-time and organic. However the timing issues can't be overlooked; it feels like you played the guitar part without any kind of accompniment, and then added percussion et al afterwards. There's a difference between sounding organic and just being off. Things just don't match up. The section at 2:52 however simply rocks my socks. Very nice ending too. I'm going to give this mix a borderline NO. I really feel that this piece can really shine if you sit down with a metronome or something and redo those parts with the questionable timing. I really hope you take the feedback to heart and try for a resubmit. I enjoyed your concept, and I want to see the execution done as best as it can be done. GO FOR THE GOLD!
  12. Whoa...GM... Yeah, I agree with Larry about the deceptively sophisticated. There's no other way to describe this. However, I'm inclined to agree with Vig too; it seems to be needlessly dense sometimes; it's numbing. After a while it became a blur of boops and beeps; I had a hard time staying focused on this. It seems to just get more complicated as it goes, and compounded with the wonky GM sounds. Maybe I'm not artistic enough to understand this piece; or maybe I am, but just don't find it to be very compelling. Either way, this mix gets a NO. edit: wow, that last bit really makes me sound like an asshole.
  13. There's some kind of CRAZY detuning going on here. Some intonation issues around the beginning part, but I think that's what the style calls for. For something as zany as this, I was really expecting some kind of tripped out industrial percussion sequence. I think that there's definitely a lack of cohesion here; the song doesn't really go anywhere. It just sort of starts, plays, and ends. Not really evocative, which is important in this style. I wasn't scared or freaked out, just waiting for something interesting to happen. NO
  14. Had I not listened to the original song of this piece, I might have voted YES. It certainly is pleasant to listen to, and I do like some of the more subtle things going on. However, when compared with the original, it's clear that this is more of a cover than a remix. I went back and forth with the remix and the original PSF of the song from the game and there was no question in my mind that very little arrangement went into this song. NO
  15. I've listened to this mix over and over again, and I have to say, that while it's pleasant enough, it's really not very interesting. Basically, as Prot said, the piece lacks the crucial 'human touch' that a solo piano piece simply MUST have. If you're going to do a piano piece, I would suggest playing it live; this sounds very sequenced. NO
  16. This is Squidfont, however, it's not Squidfont used really well. The strings sound really lo-fi and filtered; sounds like you used those combination string section sounds at the end of the bank. The flute really goes out of tune at the higher register, sometimes it gets rather painful. Also, the horn seems to have no attention paid to velocities on it; it sounds very static and lifeless. I caution you when using Squidfont; it's not really much good for anything aside from strings, and you should always try to use the individual strings and build your string textures from there; aside from that, most of the other samples have intonation and clarity issues. As for the arrangement, I really don't find it very compelling; not much more than sustained strings with a flute and harp playing over it. The harp work in this song is the only real thing thats commendable. And that ending just cuts off; no resolution, no build, nothing. This piece really lacks any kind of tension and resolve that's so important in an orchestral piece. It meanders and repeats, and I cannot, for the life of me, understand the other judges' YES sentiments. NO
  17. Ladies and Gentlemen, the wingless. Is that a YES vote from you Gray? Because I'm about to NO this. I agree with the lack of continuity sentiments by other judges. While I can see what Wingless is talking about with the stream-of-conciousness idea, I really don't think it's pulled off very well. There's too much repetition for a real tone-poem kind of stream-of-conciousness arrangement, but at the same time, the whole thing comes off much too simplistic to be of any real interest. Arrangement is sparse. There's a nice texture here too, but I think that the piano is just too damn bright. Now, I'll admit I'm a bit biased against brighter sounding pianos (OHNOES JUJDES BIASZZ!!~1!), but in this context it's just very out of place. Something warmer and darker would be much more appropriate and expressive than the metallic sound of that piano. NO
  18. I agree. However, for this particular piece, I think there's enough substance and variation here to warrant a yes. The style is kind of crazy, but the piece manages to stay coherent at the same time. I really like how it switches back and forth from acoustic to electronic. It's short, yes, but it's still sweet, and it gets the job done. YES
  19. I don't know if Shael's already used two fallthroughs or not; perhaps we should keep a running list. Anyway, here: I'm going to go with a NO here. The beat's not bad, but that lead has GOT to go. It's got a really lo-fi sound that just carries throughout the mix. I was waiting for something cleaner and clearer to bust in and break down the melody with some interpretation. As it stands though, there's not much going for this song aside from the beats. Not a lost cause at all, but I think it really needs more work. Sorry man. NO
  20. Christ. A soundfont is a specific sample format developed by Creative Labs for use with MIDI data. A soundfont can have multiple patches available in one file, and can be velocity layered and multisampled. Now can we please the keep the discussion in here about FL? Thanks.
  21. The concept is definitely there, but the execution is a bit lacking. Like malcos mentioned, the tonal stuff is kinda weak soundwise. FL's 'limited' library is no excuse. I use FL along with external sounds and get fantastic results. It's a VERY chill beat you've got, with a nice style, but there are some wonky tonality and intonation issues around the end. Perhaps cleaner samples/synth that allow more control over the polyphony would help. Sounds like you're using synths that have preset 5ths or 7ths (etc) in there. It's my experience that writing the harmony explicitly is better than relying on the synth to do so. (I could be wrong about this however; in which case forget I said anything). Anyway, NO, but pretty strong. I'd say go for a resubmit.
  22. Very edgy and clean. Interpretation is there, execution is there. I like it. YES
  23. Issues are fixed. No problems here. YES Kudos to Fray for taking suggestions in stride and to heart.
