  1. Here's a dark ambient track I wrote in my spare time at work over the past few weeks as an experiment with 5.1 surround mixing. At around 34 minutes long, this track takes the familiar Tetris song Korbeiniki and stretches it into a brooding and unfamiliar soundscape centered on the events at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. EDIT: Added a new mirror. Fixed original. http://stc.gotdns.com/store/CotMM-Korbeiniki-BattleofChernobyl.ac3 http://brahms.servebbs.net/music/CotMM-Korbeiniki-BattleofChernobyl.ac3 If you need an AC3 codec, one can be found (along with Winamp Plugin) at http://ac3filter.net/ Enjoy.
  2. Hah. Fantastic. Thanks for the link, Trenthian. That opening horn sample makes me nostalgic for Street Fighter II. I gave this a quick listen here in my cubicle with my ipod headphones and the mix and balance just sounds great. The lyrics were just campy enough to not be groan inducing, but still made me smirk at least once. Fun. (:
  3. I've recently installed Fluxbuntu www.fluxbuntu.org on an old laptop, and it is my primary home computer at the moment. PII - 366Mhz 160mb Ram RagePro Mobility 8mb 1.4gig HD I've got gaim, firefox, a few games, xmms, and a few other goodies. Definately all i need sitting on the couch by the TV. Even managed to get 3d acceleration working on this old video chipset. And i've still got like 200megs free to play with. And on top of that, it's wicked fast. I still can't believe this is a PII.
  4. There is nothing "ripped" in this track. I've never even played Ultima 8, let alone heard any music from it. While the prior observation was made there are some presets from the Absynth softsynth used (Hey, if they work, why not use them?) there's certainly nothing underhanded about that. Though I do question if I used 'dnb junkie' I don't seem to recall that one. Regardless, I appreciate you enjoyed it, but 'ripped' is a rather strong verb with the wrong connotations to describe any similarities there may be with one of my lead lines and another existing work.
  5. Hah, nice. I used to have a poster for the Amiga version of this game plastered over my bedroom door as a kid. http://gamemusic.emugaming.com/music/Amiga/X-Out/cover.png Damn hard game, loved it too. Nice to see someone giving this game some attention (:
  6. This is probably my single most popular track. It's also the one I think I've enjoyed the most over the years. A lot of love went into this one. The storm noises were recorded in stereo from several different thunderstorms over the course of about two years. The original intent was not for this remix, but I think they found a happy enough home in it. The chimes and metal noises (other than the single in-game sample I ripped) were recorded from wind chimes and other metal I found around the house. Several people who have come to that home after having heard the remix commented they felt like they were stepping into the remix when they closed their eyes and just listened. That made me smile, because I designed some of the stereo separation effects in this track to model part of my backyard. I've always loved trying to take things that I find an unconventional beauty in and try and share it in some accessable form. That's probably why I love this track so much, because it seems to universally be accepted and enjoyed. I have noticed several comments from various people about the ending section. I can see where many of these comments come from, since it may not seem to 'flow' really with the rest of the track, but I'll lay out my thoughts and intention on it here... The chord progression is strictly from the Overworld theme of 2300 AD. In your first venture to this land in the game you help provide some food to the surviving populace. Their theme in the game, given the scenario just seemed such a beautiful expression of hope in the face of absolute despair.. at the end of this long soundscape of wasted land, I wanted the focus to shift that even in a world destroyed, hope remains. My mental image standing, watching the storms roll across the land, then turning to see a few fellow survivors, and some food for everyone to have. I probably could have found a way to integrate it a little more smoothly, but I still feel it stands. Originally I was going to write a full 'tutorial' about how I went about constructing this track, but I never finished it. Don't ask me about finishing it, because it's just simply been too long, now, over two years ago. http://silenthillbbs.dyndns.org/tutorial/ If you want the higher-bitrate version, change that IP address in the document to the same domain as the above URL. I'll edit the document one day so it's not needed. Finally, a screenshot of what I believe was the final mix in the program I did the mix-down in, Acid. http://silenthillbbs.dyndns.org/stills/ruined_world.jpg I couldn't fit the whole thing into a single shot and still show all the envelopes and such, but I think it's a nice overview of the whole thing. Thanks for all the kind words, everyone. Enjoy.
  7. NessTheHero quoted the words properly on page 1 of the review thread... that second line is actually "It ain't me you need to worry about now." All the clips were taken from the original Pitch Black trailer, if I recall.. it might have been the teaser. Either way it's one of them on the DVD.
  8. One of the most wonderful this about this quirky little remix is the fact that Haz never actually submitted it, as far as I know... If memory serves me correctly, Haz posted it on the old old forums and DJP thought it was cute, thought it was a submittion, and subsequently posted it.
  9. I was sitting at my dinner table the other night and noticed two chords in the background music of some television show that instantly brought me to Nibelheim.. I figured there had to be a remix of this somewhere on the site.. I don't really dig the percussion change at 3:00. It's just too upbeat for the rest of the track. Fun stuff otherwise though.. I really do like the sound of it. edit: Hah, i didn't even remember voting on this one way back in October of '02 ... and I voted NO. Guess I really didnt' like that ending. Oh well, all's well that ends well.
  10. I mentioned this back at the start of this thread, and I've talked with Eccles some.. I'm working on a Silent Hill themed MUD/MUSH and could use some help. Anyone interested in this project, please IM me at SilentHillBBS There would be a slowly expanding universe set in Silent Hill in which multiple users can interact with one another and the universe of the city.
  11. Side note: I'm looking at starting a Silent Hill themed MUD. If I did, who would be interested in supporting such a project? It would be run on the BBS I run, http://silenthillbbs.dyndns.org/bbs.htm For those who are not familiar with MUDs, it's essentially a combination of a chatroom and an MMORPG. The world would be able for users to add to it, creating new locations and what not. Basically people involved would be creating the town in which to live and interact (also fight off monsters). Anyone interested?
  12. not sure how relevant this might be, but here's a small little guide with pictures and stuff that I threw together some time ago.. I can't recall when. Doesn't really say anything more than whats been said before now, but the illustration might be a bit eaiser to understand for some people. http://24.211.112.207/shared/remixing/clipping.htm
  13. I can think of few cases where anything under a minute would be worth consideration. NO
  14. Sounds pretty cool, but nothing really new to it. if you're not going to set it apart from everything else thats ever been done with the theme, why bother? NO
  15. Yeah, something in the drums is clipping deep somewhere. odd mastering issue. The drums sound pretty dry too. Just don't feel like they blend in with the rest of the rest of the track. Hah, i liked that ending. Tighten this up a bit and you've got a winner. NO
  16. That lead synth reminds me of the old synthetic time parasite remix we killed a few months back. Arrangement really doesn't do anything for me here. The percussion is kinda neat to start off with, but doesn't really go anywhere. NO
  17. Some weak points where we only have strings and drums. Those strings just don't carry themselves that well. They work pretty good for background support, but strip away whats on top and they get pretty flat sounding. Neat percussion, though. The various incidental elements really fill this track out at times. My only concern is that by 2:16 I'm only just now starting to feel elements that tie it together.. common themes and the like. With something as theme driven as 'orchestral', or 'techno', I'd like to be hearing a bit more motif driven. And a final comment on the voice sample... it's just too dry. It doesn't need reverb, or any of that special effects garbage.. it just needs some sort of treatment so it's not as "HI!!!!111 I"M A VOIE OVER~~!~" all of the sudden. That might be as simple as lowering the volume and panning it just a hair off to one side, or you might just resample the entire monolouge with someone else reading it... I dunno. It's not a bad little track, definatly better than most of the other stuff i've listened to in this judging session. While I think it could use some improvements, I'll look to your next remix for growth. YES
  18. Nothing makes me as sad as hearing something starting off damn cool and then seeing a string of NOs. The groove is pretty cool, but the actual Sephiroth theme just seems sort of superimposed over the rest of it. Maybe with a different instrument or variation on the rhythm it would work better. Some wonderful direction with that groove, but the melody aspects just don't feel tightly enough integrated with it. NO
  19. yeah, this is pretty neat, if not a little dry, like an overcooked turkey. I mean, you still eat the turkey, but you have to chew alot and drink more tea. Going on 2 minutes now, and I still feel like we're missing some sort of a lead. I mean it sounds good as a background rock track, but it sounds like it wants to be the center of attention.. and center stage all I'm hearing is a spot light on a hole. That solo at 2:30ish fills in what I was listening for, but then it's gone and we're back to more of the same old. The back end is more full with the lead, but that opening theme just didn't hold it for me, but in the grandscheme of things it's enjoyable. About 30% of this track left me bored, but the other 70% was fun. YES
  20. The instruments leave a hollow sounding feeling to the whole mix... just a lack of density to it.. paired with the shortness of the remix, it just doesn't stand out all that much. NO
  21. This is awful thin sounding overall.. Just doesn't feel like there isn't any, err, depth to it. A few of the instruments sound pretty good, but there isn't really anything to the arrangement that makes it stant out to me. NO
  22. That's a loud remix right there, my friend. The problem with the actual mastering of the track kicks it out of the running from the start, but I'll see if I can't come up with anything else to say about it... The instruments are not all that great. They sound like some rather tinny soundfonts or something... That and the static nature of the drums makes this drag on and on... I'm not familiar with the original, but a lot of this just seems so busy that it's forgettable. I cannot remember anything of what I heard earlier in this track because it's so busy with stuff at the same volume I'm not sure what I'm suppose to focus on. NO
  23. What I don't like is that this original theme is pretty short.. and so is this remix. By like a minute and a half I feel like I've been listening for 10 minutes. By the time we reach the fun little solo, it's starting to feel the weight of the shortness of the original theme. I dunno, aside from the solo, I don't see how this is substantially different from any other hard rock version of the same theme. And yeah, the ending is a big let down. NO
  24. I dunno, i kinda like the pitchbendy flute instrument.. damnit more claps. Anyway, yeah that guitar sounds pretty dead. if this went somewhere other than repeating itself I might be leaning toward a yes.. The piano bridge is a nice break, but it's been repeating the same theme a bit too long before that.. Clever little ending. Definatly lots of neat stuff going on here. Shows a good deal of promise for stuff in the future. With more new material, or at least variation on the original melody, this could be in for the running, but as for now it's just too close to the original as far as arrangement goes. NO
