  2. well, i really don't think the complexity is in question (as zircon meant to say overreliance on sampling). As many have pointed out, the backing music that BC did add does follow the chord structure/melody of the original, albeit moving it from a jazz piece to triphop instrumentation. The arrangement of the original is there - which is impressive given that BC was working with a clip of the song and not the actual song. The issue at hand is the direct sampling of the source. In this case, I feel that the genre adaption/processing on the vocals does help a lot. I mean, it's not like he ripped the track and pasted it over his mix. He built a new song around it - while still keeping to the progression of the original - in a completely different style. In my opinion, this song fits under OCR's guidelines moreso than the other song on OCR to do this - Jared Hudson's FFX remix, which was contested during the last lockdown and ended up being kept on the site. Going back and rereading all the lockdown decisions on that song, I can pretty much apply everything said to this track.
  3. My biggest tip would be to listen to the style of a couple of rock drummers and try and emulate their drum writing. Depending on the style of rock you're going for, drum writing can be either extremely simple (punk) or extremely complex (prog). Just try copying a couple of songs and then making your own creative changes to them. Its a good way to start. And processing is key to the drum sound. The drums in "When The Levee Breaks", for example, are HUGE and instantly recognizable. Think about how you want them to sound - do you want them thick with reverb, or pretty dry. Do you want them overcompressed, like say triphop drums, or do you want them natural sounding?
  4. heh...cabinet. anyways, like i said, when i move into my new room, i'll be setting up a more permanent setup and then i'll look into getting all my shit set right. for now, i have set it up like so Rode Vocal Mic ---> TubePac ---> 0404 ---> Samson Mix Pad ---> Moniters
  5. i started "remixing" my junior year of high school (2002) on FL's demo. I would have been 16-17 or so. I'd been playing guitar and writing original midi for about two years before that.
  6. hey thanks for that info. i'll keep that in mind...havent really hooked it up or anything yet. been messing around with the other mic and finding it gets a decent sound as well. any other tips you have on the Røde would be appreciated.
  7. sounds like it might be it. can't remember now.
  8. also, if anyone wants to help me identify the brand of that bass guitar, so i can gauge the value? other than some words in japanese and that symbol there's really no name features.
  9. I just recently got an Emu 0404. Best money spent.
  10. Dunno. It only has one tape slot, if that;s what you mean...I'll try and get a picture when I can. Also, are you suggesting plugging the mics into the respective preamps, running those two into a MIXER and then into the EMU? or running one into the EMU directly and then switching them depending on which one I want to use? And then I would run my sound out into a mixer and then into the monitors?
  11. Can I get a list of all the game tracks used in the movie? I know a couple off the top of my head, but I'd like a list. Also, visually stunning, amazing first half...TERRIBLE dialogue. I liked the movie a lot but I couldn't get past the constant bombardment of terribly written/conveyed dialogue. edit: oh, yeah, what was that one industrial/hiphop sounding track that came on somewhere near the end...i think it was when the cult was leading rose to the elevator...
  12. well I got this: Sampson MixPad 9 but i dunno how well it works. I'd be willing to buy a decent cheap mixer though - it was something i was considering. I think Behringer has a 40-50 dollar one? But nah, can't get on IRC atm. also, i assume that I need a mixer to hook phones up?
  13. Funny, I do that too! I always thought it was a strange way of doing things, but I guess I'm not alone.
  14. So one of my friends dad was a professional musician. He died of cancer a few years ago, and over the years since, her mom has been selling off his expensive, amazing equipment. She decided to move to New Orleans now, and she's just getting rid of a lot of stuff. I volunteered to take some off her hands. She made me pay a little bit, but considering what I got, it's a killer deal, methinks. Anyways, some of this stuff she just gave me for free and it's vintage and i doubt I'll use it, but if there's a use for it in my studio i'm gonna be putting together over the next few years, let me know. So this is a temporary setup. I'm moving to a new house in August and i'll make a more permanent studio, but for now, any advice on how to wire/set all these up (if all of them become useful) would be helpful. As of now, here's the list: - Yamaha RX120 Digital Rhythm Programmer. - Sampson MixPad 9 - TubePac Tube Preamp/Compressor - Radioshack Four Channel Mic Mixer - Rode NT1 Condensor Mic - Audio Technica ATM41 Dynamic Mic - Tascam PortaOne Mini Studio (this is tape so i probably wouldn't use it, but if there's a way i can utilize it...?) - M-Audio StudioPhile SP-5B Near-field monitors - Two violins in decent condition - Japanese looking electric bass guitar with this logo: Dunno the brand. anyways, i already have: - TubePre Preamp - Audio Technica AT2020 Condenser Mic - EMU 0404 - A couple of electric guitars. Anyone want to take a stab at helping me setup/wire at least some of this stuff? I want to mainly be able to concentrate on vocal/guitar recording and i'd like to know how best to utilize this new trove of stuffz.
  15. I didn't say i was having trouble writing lyrics. Thanks, though!
  16. This is a pretty general set of questions for all lyricists in the community. How do you go about writing your lyrics? Is it a matter of mood, or can you sit down at any time and work them out? Also, do you generally find it harder to write a chorus or a verse? Not trying to be specific on a genre here. I'm just curious as to how the (few and far between) songwriters in this community go about their work. edit: any "OMG LYRICS SUCK" posts will be promptly deleted.
  17. Hell, i had the same problem a few weeks ago - only with stereo output to my speakers. If i get a behringer mixer, can i input an 1/8th inch M stereo jack (from the speakers -> pc) into it? Cause EMU's all like "we dont know when the chord will be back in stock"
