OCR01843 - Civilization IV "Destined for Greatness"
Geoffrey Taucer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Well, the original did, afterall, have the one of most epic cumshots ever. Cool. Good to know. Saw it on the site itself; it came up and then went down. Dave said, in short, he made some mistakes while putting it up and had to take it down to fix them. -
New remixer? Input needed!
Geoffrey Taucer replied to StandingInMotion's topic in Music Composition & Production
Ok, here's what I'd do: spend the money on a soundcard and headphones. Find the best soundcard you can and the most accurate headphones you can, and just go with free stuff for software/samples. this thread and this guide will probably be very useful to you. -

Some really good stuff here. I especially reccomend zircon's tutorials. Also, it would help if you could give us an idea of how much money you're ready to spend on this. It can be done perfectly well for free, though you can also greatly expand your options by throwing some money at it. -
If we can pick up enough programmers, I think it would be better to take the I, Mario project and run with it than to start something completely new.

so... how do you guys do it?
Geoffrey Taucer replied to atenza's topic in Music Composition & Production
I never start with midis; I've always found that stifles my creativity. I do everything from scratch, by ear. Sometimes my memory and my ear are accurate, sometimes they aren't. Most of my best ideas come from messing around and sometimes even from screwing up; for example I have a zelda's lullabye mix in the works that sounds, in my opinion, absolutely amazing, and it grew out of failed attempts to figure out the original chord progression. I couldn't figure out the chords for the original, but I found that with a few alterations to the melody I could use a simpler progression that not only sounded great, but fit just as well behind Illia's theme, allowing me to mash the two together into a single mix. So I took the idea and ran with it (or rather, am running with it) -
Who wants drum samples? (aka my senior project)

Ordered. Will likely make good use of it (as I have with Sitar Nation) -
OCR01839 - Final Fantasy VI "City Corner Lullaby"
Geoffrey Taucer replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Wow.... this is absolutely gorgeous. Without a doubt one of the most beautiful piano arrangements I've heard. You have done an absolutely amazing job of bringing out all the emotion in the source. I just wish it was longer! Definitely going on my list of all-time favorite remixes. -
Brambles Open Minds Like Bubbles (Finished)

I think the biggest thing it needs is more interesting percussion. Otherwise, beautifully done. -
Chrono Trigger Undersea Palace

Hehe, actually, I just a month or two ago splurged on some new stuff, and had a couple libraries I hadn't made much use of yet, so with this mix I was specifically setting out to use every library I could, especially the new ones I just got. That way I could tell myself I was actually justified in paying that much goddamn money for them. EWJ thread? -

Haha, if I'm interpereting you correctly.... sorry; at this point my plan is to do this one solo. BUT I may change my mind (and by "change my mind" I mean "get lazy and look for somebody else to finish my work for me") -

So, schala's theme at the end. Does it work ok? -

Are you talking about the shamisen or the powerchords? 'Cause the electric guitar powerchords ARE real in this version. I'll see what I can do with the strings. As for the pan flute... perhaps you mean the ehru? There's no wind instrument until the zourna comes in at 1:20. Thanks ; I'm quite proud of this section. (Actually, it's a dizi, not a pan flute, but the sound is quite similar) I'll definitely play around with the asian vibe and see where it goes. I actually wanted the arpeggio part to be really bearing, really heavy, really tense, to enhance the feel of a "release" when it changes at 1:20. Perhaps I overdid it a bit, though... I'm debating exactly what I want to do with the transitions; I'm torn between making them smoother and making them even more jarring -- sort of a MAKE YOU SHIT BRICKS transition. I'll probably experiment with both. THanks Here's what I used: GUITARS: my carvin DCiforgetwhatnumber electric and Guitar Rig 3 Strings: EastWest Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra Gold XP Percussion: Sitar Nation and EastWest SD2 everything else: EastWest Quantum Leap RA EDIT: Sorry, I lied: the Didjeridoo and the Dizi aren't RA; they're Bela-D Spiritual Wind. -
Dropout during rendering (sonar)
Geoffrey Taucer replied to Geoffrey Taucer's topic in Music Composition & Production
How do I do that? I only have one instance of kontakt, but several instances of PLAY. Come to think of it, all the instruments that are dropping are PLAY instruments, I think. -
http://www.geoffreytaucer.com/wips/underseapalace.mp3 Some dropoffs that I can't manage to get rid of, but this should give you the idea of where I'm going with it.

Dropout during rendering (sonar)
Geoffrey Taucer replied to Geoffrey Taucer's topic in Music Composition & Production
No synths, but some HUGE samples. EWQLSO (the play version) RA (play version) SD2 Kontakt (sitar nation, spiritual wind) Moseph: Haven't tried yet; I'll give it a shot later tonight -
A current (enormous) project of mine sounds great when I listen to the project itself, but when I render to .wav, notes keep dropping out. I'll hear the first 10th of a second or so of the note, then the instrument goes silent until the next note is played. Any idea what might be causing this or how to fix it? I'm using sonar 6, if that helps.
-
Yes. I fucking loved that game. Actually I think I'm gonna go start another play through now that I'm thinking about it.
-
Well, let's see.... Chrono Trigger Chrono Cross Xenogears Mario RPG Beyond Good and Evil Mario bros 1-3, world, yoshi's island, 64, and galaxy DKC 1-3 Zelda LA, LttP, OoT, WW, and TP (started but never finished Zelda 1 and 2) Prince of Persia Beyond Good and Evil There are probably a few games missing from this list, but I don't think there are very many. I guess generally I tend more towards more action-y games and get bored before finishing RPGs, but obviously there are plenty of exceptions.

I'm Geoffrey Taucer pretty much everywhere (including the Rennaissance Faire.)
-
Thank you. And most of them I played at least halfway through. I played FF3, FF6, FF7, FF8, and FF9 more than halfway through. And honestly I really loved 3 and 6, and thought 9 wasn't too bad -- I just never finished them.
-
Hi, I'm Geoffrey Taucer, and I have never finished a single Final Fantasy game. (Though I've played every single one up through 9 -- including the ones that weren't released in the US)
-
Haha, me too. I wasn't sure which of us he was referring to.

Huzzah! Nice work!
