Need help finding Silent Hill synth/ambient pads
Nase replied to Blue Note's topic in Music Composition & Production
I pretty much know for a fact that some commercial synths do stuff/have a certain sound that can't be matched by any freeware available. Is that even up for debate? You're missing the point. It's simply the safer route to first inform yourself firsthand about what freeware can do and THEN consider spending money if you're not satisfied. What if the guy buys Omnisphere, then downloads a couple free plugins and realises that those are all he'd ever need? Would be way more frustrating than the first scenario wouldn't it? -
Need help finding Silent Hill synth/ambient pads
Nase replied to Blue Note's topic in Music Composition & Production
word. http://www.greenoak.com/crystal/ http://krakli.com/krakli-cygnus/ Those two are especially good for evolving pad sounds with a lot of motion in them. Plenty of presets available for both. on a sidenote, the dev of crystal now works for spectrasonics (omnisphere). if that works as a seal of quality for ya. For less complex sounds, synth1 should do a fine job http://www.geocities.jp/daichi1969/softsynth/ There's a very nice pad soundbank by tim conrardy for synth1. Should be quite inspirational. it's included in here: http://rekkerd.org/tim-conrardy-patch-collection/ Seriously though guys, it's cool that you're gearsluts and are having fun with your stuff, but don't spoil the newbs I think it's nice to start small and develop a sense for what freeware can get you and for what it possibly can't. You can still shell out money if you think that the free stuff doesn't cut it. -
Hey Roe. Glad ye like! The pad sound is from Oatmeal, nice freebie. About the bitcrushing thing, can't remember, but could very well be I rarely make anything electronic without some crushed bits somewhere. Nice to hear that you like the detail. Others would call it randomness

Breakcore Braindance DnB something. Pretty abrasive, if that's not your cup o tea... Enjoy. http://tindeck.com/listen/rgvu

I'd be interested as well, if anyone has a key for me. I play a bit of DotA occasionally so I should get the hang of it rather quickly.

Haha, KVR has quite a few of those people, with way too much money on their hands. There's this one guy in particular that keeps buying anything new and shiny and then tries to sell it in the forum's market place a couple days later because god forbid there was some work involved in making it sound like in the demos.

Xenon, could you IM richter to post in here and explain the problem clearly? Although the site is clearly past its heyday, I'd really hate to see it vanish completely.

Awesome feat! I guess sometimes you just need some balls to approach icons like normal if talented people (that they often enough turn out to be), and wonderful things can happen. Enjoyed the track, quite faithful to the game's feel.

My assessment would be that if you learn how to use Omnisphere properly, you won't really be needing this. You need this if you want to make a nice sounding score or atmospheric track fast and easy, without spending too much time on sound design. Provided money isn't much of an issue of course. If you have enough time on your hands, own Omnisphere and maybe a few supplementary smaller libraries for percussion and the like, you should be able to do the same job just as well though. Btw, everyone, If you have Kontakt, I recommend trying out the free demo patches the company offers. They're a lot of fun to play, particularily the ones from Synergy. These guys definitely are good at what they're doing, even though the general preset-ish aproach with limited tweakability isn't totally up my alley when I'm just making music for myself. Which is pretty much all the time Oh, BGC, if you're still including me in the 'music purists/elitists' group, you're simply lacking humour Seriously though, this stuff is worth discussing. It seems like my hyperboles from that last thread were directly quoted in Rozo's post, and he made it seem like a righteous armada of elitists were ranting away the last time. So let me give a clear and unencrypted opinion this time: Presets, and preset midis and all of that stuff, are alright, they have their use obviously. There isn't always a need to reinvent the wheel. That said, the bigger the 'building blocks' you work with, so to speak, become, the greater the chance will be that the end product is going to sound less individual, less 'you'. You can prevent it, you can still put your own spin on it. It is just less likely to happen when, to offer an extreme example, you have this super awesome one key wonder preset that sounds so great already that you'd be hard pressed to make it sound any better. I find that relation obvious, but judging from the last thread it's a touchy subject when you voice it in a more provocative way. See, I don't care how you make your music. Even if it is heavily preset based, unless I know the libraries in question or they're just literally sprayed over all the new stuff that comes out, I probably won't even notice and might enjoy it a lot. It's really just about you and your relationship with your music. If you're happy with many presets and feel like you manage to express yourself well with them instead of just doing some advanced 'sound collage', then who am I to tell you to change that. If you feel something is missing, then doing more of your own sounds might help you develop a more intimate relationship with your compositions. Or you'll just fiddle around with parameters and get nothing done. Who knows? It's not for everyone, and that's alright. Sometimes I like to just focus on composition as well. S'all.

Hey Sam

Indie by definition, but does it still *smell* Indie? Ha, I think I'm starting to despise the 'Indie' label for games just as much as i do in music Soo easy to get pretentious about it. Great game btw needless to say.

MoneySeize is wicked. The level design gets downright evil later on. I'm alternating between manic laughter and screams of fury. The handling is done so well though that you can't help but try again. Thanks for sharing! I'll play through the others as well.

Dead Space Ambient Remix (Twinkle Twinkle)
Nase replied to SpecialAgentBoB's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
Ambient is Ambient...its definition has watered down over the years, but unlike most 'ambient' mixes showing up here this piece is relatively close to the genre that Brian Eno initially coined as 'Ambient music'. This type of music has rather slim chances to get posted on here, of course, but again, it is what it is. -

Generally, synthesizing or processing a sound on the spot takes up cpu, while sampled sounds take up ram. So unless there's some heavy fx chain on the sampled instrument or the plugin uses a hybrid approach (or it's just awfully programmed, dunno), you mostly have to worry about your ram resources. with FL's ram limit, my more dominantly sample based .flps end up using all the ram while the cpu meter barely reaches 50%, often much less. Disk streaming included. I'm using Kontakt/Sampletank though, but I can only assume that the CPU use of Play is bad considering it's a sampler/rompler. I'm pretty sure it's not comparable to CPU hogs in the synth realm. I mean, how bad can it be?

My first Nintendo DS Korg-10 Album: Super-Bit!
Nase replied to Kidd Jredd's topic in Post Your Original Music!
I just checked out your profile, actually there already are 2 of my tracks in your humongous 'Likes' list Btw, my earlier tracks on 8BC are all done in nanoloop, so I hear ya about lack of patterns. It can be a nice challenge though to combine the few patterns available in different ways and construct a long and relatively varied track with it. -
My first Nintendo DS Korg-10 Album: Super-Bit!
Nase replied to Kidd Jredd's topic in Post Your Original Music!
Hey Jredd. I see your name on 8bc sometimes. I go by 'skoshu' over there. So, regarding the mixing... The hi hat in 'Blip Shards' does hurt a bit. I'm not that picky when it comes to mixing, things just get less enjoyable for me when i hear sounds with really painful frequencies. Blip Shards was the only tune though where it was pretty bad, I had to skip it. Nothing particularly jarring in the other tunes. I like them quite a bit. Club Lo-Fi sounds pretty much like a direct homage to Streets of Rage. That's an automatic compliment on your sound design btw. It's lovely. Actually, I feel that reminiscences to SoR are scattered across the whole album. Particularly the drums, all those awesome hardcore kicks and FM-like sounding hats (Mechanical Warriors especially). Nintendope is just brilliant, and it's mixed perfectly imo. I'll be listening to the album some more. Shame the tracks are pretty short, is the amount of different patterns that limited in DS-10 or did you want it that way? I bought a DS a year ago pretty much just to make music with DS-10, but I haven't even bought the cartridge yet! Such a waste. I just ordered Midines though because making tracks in Famitracker is starting to feel tiresome. So DS-10 will have to wait a bit. And then there's little scale's upcoming MIDI Genesis project, of course...waaagh, tooo many options! -
No one ever mentions Kirk Hunter. http://www.kirkhunterstudios.com/purchase.html The Emerald version is a good deal right now. Seems like the hard drive version for the same price is gone by now though. closeout sale @ $150, i assume they're abandoning it because its patches aren't as flexible as Ruby's. at 25 gb, it's quite comprehensive though. Ah, you need Kontakt for it I guess. or would the new Kontakt Player be able to load it? I haven't checked it out. Kontakt is pretty much a must have though if you want to build up a good sample library.

Toontrack Electronic EZX
Nase replied to big giant circles's topic in Music Composition & Production
I was just having a stab at ya (or the plugin) incase you didn't notice, my real point was below that. and it's still just a personal view, man. Ugh, no need for that old 'omg it's a tool' rant! I've read that stuff a thousand times on the net, written it myself, and needless to say agree with it. I was really just talking about how, to me, making electronic drumkits isn't rocket science (compared to, say, sampling a complex instrument), which is why I'd rather invest a little time and make them myself. Lots of free samples on the net, lots of free vsts to shape them. Where did I imply that I look down on people who don't wanna do that? Overdefensive much? -
probably FM. Do you have Sytrus? If yes, try the Electric 4 preset, turn the reverb off, make it monophonic, and run it through an ampsim (JCM900 for example). In general, running all kinds of synth sounds through ampsims is a good idea, always adds a lot of 'guitar flavor'.

Toontrack Electronic EZX
Nase replied to big giant circles's topic in Music Composition & Production
I can only imagine lazypoos getting this plugin. BGC, you're a lazypoo. NOW you not only can get the top producers' signature sound design, no, here's their beats as well!! Everything you need to NOT be making music! Ha, sorry But my point is: I'm sure those are nice kits if you want some new inspirational sounds, but it's hard for me to build up enthusiasm over something like this when I could just take my one shots, warp the shit out of them and construct a kit then. It'd be more work, it might not sound as good (prooobably), but it'll be something I did myself. I don't mean to say that anyone SHOULD do that. thing is, I prefer getting excited about stuff that can definitely do stuff that my stuff can't. yeah. I mean, staying in the practical realm of course. I COULD theoretically sample a piano myself i guess, but...I'd rather not. Electronic drums though, they have DIY written all over them imo. Which primarily makes me think 'waste of money'. -
Ah, I was wondering a while ago when this would finally come out. I actually was half expecting them to fall on their face with this update - it just seemed too much of a technological leap to work well right away. Really gotta give it a try now.

Nope, gotta find his brain and eat it. Are you being serious?
