  1. Well, the digital pianos, and if I remember right, the P80 is fairly newer, the ones they make now sound like a real piano. Hard to tell the difference aside from the sound coming out of speakers instead of the piano itself.

If it has MIDI hookups, then yes, you can use it for quite some time for the future, until some random huge CEO decides MIDI is outdated and everything goes to shit. But let's save that discussion for another day :P

Anyway, you're fine. I think I played a P80 once and it was very, very nice. You seem way serious about realistic piano action, so definitely stay away from 'semi-weighted' and synth action keys, you're probably not gonna like either of those options. It's almost like you want them to stick or something XD but play around with the P80 for a bit more and see if it's really worth all that money. Also, I would only get a midi controller if I wanted some extra, mappable keys.

  2. You have Reason, so it's probably doable, but you HAVE to know what kind of channel the guy wants to run. There's a difference between Lifetime and Spike TV, for example.

The material on the TV station pretty much defines what you will write. If you can tell me what kind of format he's gonna be running, I can help you out with some ideas.

  3. when it comes to decent soundcards, I guess I am one.

    !

Well, usually, it's Left/Mono, and Right. Just putting the plug in the left one gets you monaural sound, therefore, your problem. I've seen signal splitters but not the other way around, but isn't there a headphones jack also on that thing?

If not, I think there are two-pronged headphones you can buy :) or maybe your speakers have a headphone jack in them.

    I wish mine did :(

  4. I heard that 320kbps is totally indistinguishable by the human ear.

indistinguishable to what? CD quality? Quality doesn't stop at CDs :) That's why we have DVD-A and Hi-Def CDs and SCDs and all that.

That said, I think a partial mirror site of sorts that hosts FLAC and/or other lossless formats would be a good idea. I know a few people [not a lot, though] that prefer flac encoding over mp3 because hard drive space isn't so limiting anymore.

  5. Argosy desks seem a bit costly, yeah. I'm with EKM, sort of. It's not hard [or at least expensive] to be your own carpenter :)

I don't think it's unreasonable for a guy to know how to build. I'm disappointed they never taught me how in school.

You can probably build something identical to those desks your own for at least 1/5th of the price.
