Anime

I rewatched Zoids New Century recently, and it remains ridiculously over the top awesome. I've also started watching Air Gear, which is basically Jet Set Radio: The Anime (except with more violence and less graffiti). It's pretty much exactly what you'd expect out of a shonen anime featuring rocket skates, with the notable exception that it has a lot of swearing and nudity (so it's not the sort of thing you want to watch with your elementary school kid brother or something, regardless of how harmless the premise seems). It actually sorta annoys me, because it seems like every five minutes they have to remind you that this is a SERIOUS show for ADULTS because it has CUSS WORDS and TITS HELL YEAH WOO!, which is an attitude that I find highly silly. It's not even relatively clever fanservice, like (say), FLCL. It's literally "HERE LET ME SHOW YOU MY TITS WOO".

Apparently the guy who wrote the manga used to do porn and never quite kicked the habit. But then, I read that on the internet, so who knows if it's actually true?

Nah, it's true. The writer "Oh!Great" (his pen name) did do some a while back, but I think it more hentai/doujin than actual porn. Unless that's what you meant. I recommend you take a look at the manga though... All I can say is that it puts the anime to shame...

umm I'm going to have to question your definition of porn

pornographic parody versus original porn..?

I see the difference between say... hentai/doujin works on Witchblade and Bible Black in those terms...

Or perhaps hentai/doujin works on Evangelion versus Urotsukidōji would be a better example..?

I mean, I think he thinks that "porn" can only be live models performing sexual activity on a video. What I'm getting at is that it really means any type of media that is designed to titillate the receiver of the media. Meaning that a written book (or a written fan fic, if you prefer) can be classified as pornography. Ultimately what I am getting at is that NJ is not incorrect in his assessment of "Hentai" as porn.

ah then yes Hentai is, for simplicity's sake, porn regardless if it's hand drawn/CG or live models...

Now if he wants to get into the semantics and argue about the definition about it he ought to make a thread on it on PPR; not to mention I'm not about to share clips to give examples to emphasize points.

Well I do consider them mostly two different things, but that's purely a value to me. I just kind of forget a lot and make the mistake of openly discerning the two terms. I'm too lazy to explain why it bugs me and all anyway, but to make my previous post more clear: Oh!Great was more of a hentai/doujin artist rather than a live-action pornographer.

Anyone who has not seen FLCL needs to stop what they are doing and watch it.

RIGHT NOW.

They could be watching Dead Leaves for the same amount of zaniness (though with less purpose), or someday Gainax will finish Rebuild of Evangelion - this implies that whatever new ending they come up with makes more sense than the last 3.... or more depending on which Eva continuity you're on. I tried to keep track of Angelic Days and whatever the shonen version was for a bit.

But seriously, Haruhi or 5 Centimeters per Second.

Rebuild is ehh. The dub is terrible, but more importantly it misses a significant amount of character-building. That's understood given that it's going to be just four movies from 26 episodes, but that doesn't negate the impact. The battles are far more kickass though, so, if you've seen the original series, it's a treat to see what Gainax can do with a budget. All the same, if I were to guide someone new to the series, I'd say stick the series, death (- rebirth), and end of evangelion over the rebuilds.

Not sure what you mean by eva continuities though. Congratulations didn't seem at odds with end of evangelion. Am I missing something? Are you talking manga?

I've had conversations with people that seem to believe that the 3 endings that really flow together (anime, Death/Rebirth, End of Evangelion) are completely independent and may have nothing to do with one another. The Neon Genesis Evangelion manga then has its own adherents, I only read half of Angelic Days, and I honestly swore at the creators when Gakuen Datenroku came out. If I was going to read Eva doujinshi that gave the series a decent ending I would read Re-Take, but I didn't care for the porn aspect.

I don't know, I'm not sure how much of Evangelion's character-building really needed to be dragged out across 26 episodes. However much I enjoy a number of the side characters I still think that there were a lot of scenes that could be cut out without losing the appeal. I feel like a lot of anime tend to have filler stuff - not just anime where they've explicitly put in a "filler arc" to stall for the manga to get ahead. It's just the difference between telling a a story in a serial and telling one in a straight experience.

The only Eva stuff I've had exposure to was the original anime. Would it be worth my while to go find any of the other installments of the manga/anime/whatever? I did enjoy the original anime, for the most part.

The Movies they have are much more compressed and better paced version of the series.

Also the spin off mangas (Angelic Days, Shinji Ikari Raising Project, and Campus Apocalypse) are all great cause they ditch the annoying character tendencies that most of the folks have.

If you haven't seen the proper ending, go watch Death & Rebirth (minus Rebirth, as it is copypasted as the first part of EoE) and End of Evangelion. There are still plenty of unanswered questions, but it is far more satisfying than, well, you know.

Death isn't necessary, as it's a recap of eps 1-24, but there are several new scenes that add to the story. I found it to be worthwhile.

I've had conversations with people that seem to believe that the 3 endings that really flow together (anime, Death/Rebirth, End of Evangelion) are completely independent and may have nothing to do with one another.

These people are stretching. First off, Rebirth is simply the first part of EoE; I watched them back-to-back and not a frame was changed as far as I could tell. Now, comparing EoE to the series, nothing in the original eps 25/26 necessitates an outcome in real life. It's all mental. It could be argued that Shinji made a different choice, but there isn't enough evidence to make that more than speculation.

I read your bit about dragging. That's fair, as the series starts slowly. But I certainly wouldn't call it filler; it's measured, and upon conclusion everything fits into the psychological baggage each character carries and manifests. Watching the rebuild, I found myself relating far less to the characters than I did when watching the series. It's a different focus, and in hindsight I appreciate that the series spent as much time as it did on background. So, maybe you could trim out an episode or two's worth of it and not lose much, but I'd rather keep that little bit that would be lost and endure a slower pace, especially since it's only a one-season show.

and yes to rebuild seriously needing to get done quicker.

lol to Gainax getting anything done on time. v1, v1.01, then v1.11? Are you shitting me?

An expose in how to not bump a thread. Brought to you by K.B.

Still dying here without my second season dub of Haruhi Suzumiya. Moreover, still bewildered that Adult Swim hasn't bothered with the series at all. I even e-mailed them! What more could they want?!?

PS: Death Note is the best ever for the first twelve episodes. Do stop there, though.
