Streets of Rage Album

News

I’ll be stepping up as project director because I feel an OCR album tributed to Streets of Rage NEEDS to happen. :)

The first official check in is currently FEB 8 2015 at 11:59 pm. I know a bunch of us will be blasting a weekend at MAG so this should give those that need it some extra time.

The Vision

In 1999, OverClocked ReMix was born out of a desire to acknowledge video game music as an art form through interpretive arrangement. To that end, the community has expanded into the single-best music-centric community on the Internet, and host to some of the greatest independent musical talent the Internet has to offer.

Streets of Rage quickly developed a rabid fan base when it was released in 1991 and was one of the early must have games on the Sega Genesis. The music composed by Yuzo Koshiro stood out in the early days of the Genesis and was very likely responsible for the success the game had. With the music being easily half of the experience of Streets of Rage an OCR tribute album to the game is something that should have happened years ago!

Since a number of remixers have a good chunk of work already done I am aiming for a late summer/early fall 2015 release of this first album. However this may end up changing as currently half of the album still needs to be remixed.

Genre and Music Guidelines

There aren't really any genre restrictions per se, but the project is a nod to both the music of 90s and the OC ReMix community. With that in mind, remixes should contain elements of 90s or late-80s music. If you're having trouble coming up with a suitable 90s genre, checkthis Wikipedia article for some examples. To clarify, you do not need perfectly mirror 90’s production standards. Incorporating a 90’s element could be as simple as using a 90’s vintage synth in your remix (such as a Korg M-1). Be creative and have fun experimenting!

This is intended to be an official OC ReMix album. You'll be expected to deliver a remix that meets OverClocked ReMix's quality standards. Be prepared to continuously work on your remix until it meets that standard.

Previously-released tracks are ineligible. Remixes that you have finished or almost finished but haven't put out there yet are fair game.

What We Need

ReMixers- Currently we have three tracks left that are up for grabs. If you want to claim a track send in those WIPS! .

Talent evaluators. People who are up for helping me out with feedback delivery. One head isn't as good as... more than one head. OCR staff preferred.

Visual artist. Preferably one that can stick around for the whole three years and do art for all three albums.

Resources

pu_freak can contribute piano bits.
Orangedragan is a male baritone vocalist willing to collaborate.
Damashii!! is down for "horn/brass hits, funk guitar and/or vocal one shots, and anything else in the field of funk 'garnish' or 'sprinkles' to add to your arrangements, if needed at all."
Chenabogue is offering orchestra and drum programming.
BrothaDom is offering backup and rap vocals.
Lady Wildfire is able to contribute vocals to anyone who needs them.

Claiming a Track

Everyone who got back to me will be able to keep the track they claimed. Everyone else will have their tracks re-opened to the community. Anyone who wants to claim a track must submit a minute long WIP that showcases solid production skills and the general idea of your remix BEFORE you will be listed as having claimed the track. This is to ensure that the remixer who makes a claim has a genuine interest in making the source tune into a great remix!

I do hope one way or another this project does see completion eventually. It had great potential when it started up.

Anyways, as i said to you in the PM's, i'll speak with the other Zone Runners first and decide what we're doing with our claim.

Lol, oh? I didn't realize this project failed. And after all that pressure DusK was putting on me to get a wip together during the week of my wedding or to lose our claim. Aight then. ;D

Well, our track has been pretty much finished for about a year and a half now. I think we do still need to get Sir J to record one bit of vox, but yeah, we're good to go here (will hook you up with a current copy if you need it). I'm down with sticking around for this project, I trust you'll take care of business, Gar. :) But if another year from now this thing still hasn't gone anywhere, we will be taking our track down another avenue.

As a personal advice from a previous project director whose handled at least one stupidly long-term community project and many others, OCR and elsewise.. This whole 3-year 3-game project idea sounds great and all, but its been almost 2 years already since this project started. Please, just don't even think about SoR 2 or 3 until this one is looking some semblance of done. If this goes well, then by all means do a SoR2 project, we'd love to be a part of that as well. But we've all seen what happened with the FF5 project. I think my song for that is about 4 years old now. Hell, you might not even wanna do a SoR2 project after you finish this. Just put it out of your mind completely and focus on getting this first project done.

Sorry if I sound like I'm going off the rails a bit here. I'm just sick of waiting on projects that can't get their shit together. And trust me, I know how it is to run a community project with so many moving pieces. It can be a bitch, getting people to finish tracks on a timeline, or even getting them to claim them in the first place. But if you're gonna try and create a project (let alone some crazy 3-part mega-project) involving so many people, you gotta take it seriously. You gotta treat it like a job, not just some thing you're doing for the hell of it. If you don't, everyone who put in hard work is gonna be pissed when you just give up. Be a boss, well, be a cool boss, we're all working for free here, but you gotta stay on your artists, and if they don't get shit done, fire them and find someone else. You don't need to be ridiculous with deadlines, but if a month has gone by and you haven't heard from ANYONE, then something needs to change.

Again, I trust you'll take care of business. :nicework:

I don't think you would have taken over the project if you weren't serious about it. We chilled at MAG, I know you're a hella cool guy who's really invested in this community, and I really look forward to seeing this develop (for the second time). Please kick some ass. :)

Thanks for staying committed! You are right though, this project was started quite some time ago. To be honest, I was hoping to announce a Streets of Rage community album once I got posted on OCR. Seeing as how long that takes now I've decided to just jump in on this one and get on with it. Since this is something i've wanted to do for years this is not something i'm taking lightly and will do the best I can with it!

While I am hoping to be a part of everything that's Streets of Rage on OCR this is going to be a big first for me and it's getting all of my attention to make sure it happens. SOR2 and SOR3 albums are out of my mind for now. :)

My first major album experience was working with SuperiorX on Temporal Duality. That album flowed very smoothly from signups to release and I hope to mirror that with this one.

Agreed 100%

I think I'll take Violent Breathing :-P

I have a decent idea for it but am super thankful I don't need to start until February on the substantial WIP. Will get to you soon with something to start. Got lots of stuff going on so I'm a bit busy. This project is in good hands now though and I got lots of faith in it! Good luck Garpocalypse and send me a message if you ever want some advice! (my advice will basically be to use Patience and Time™)

Welcome back Bstrades!

You can start on your substantial any time you want but I am shooting for the first real check-in being in February. Exactly when will be dictated by how long it takes to get the rest of the tracks claimed.

I have been trying to keep this project within OCRemix but since it has taken so long to get the rest of the tracks claimed I have started to open it up to non-ocr remixers. Of course OCRemixers will still be given priority when claiming tracks. Still, get those WIPS in!

Oooooh yeah there's a lot of amazing talent on youtube. You can trust posted remixers about as far as you can throw them which in most cases isn't very far  it's always nice to get talent from other communities to fill in some of the blanks

I'll behave with my WIP! Awesome ACOUSTIC / FLUTE wip of violent breathing! violently we play the flute

Thanks Garpocalypse for bringing this to my attention. I'm going for Fighting In The Street. I've done versions of it already:

(basically, a dub/progressive version of the one above)

Hoping to try something more ravey for my 3rd version like

(1:01 for reference). FITS is quite tame compared to Go Straight, so I like to toughen it up a bit. :)

Sounds like you've got a nice piece of awesomeness coming! Getting really excited for this album now! Welcome to the project Iceferno!

Hmm, you know it might be safer to just use one of my existing remixes. Whenever I try to make something for an OCR album, it just never happens (I was invited to a Zelda project a few years back, but didn't really manage anything). Perhaps you should add that 'Mutant Reconstruction Mix' I did in 2012. I've done some nice ones from the 2nd game. Really proud of my Go Straight, Dreamer and Wave 131 interpretations.

We really need unpublished music for this album. OCR projects release to pretty high expectations and having music that was not specifically made for the album would be a huge let down to a lot of OCR fans as well as the Streets of Rage fans that are always searching for new interpretations of these tracks. Not to mention that a lot of the people already on this album have a large amount of their ReMixing of their sources done already and they have been graciously holding onto their work specifically for the release of this album. To fill the remaining tracks with already published work from Youtube would be an even bigger let down for them.

The first official check in is still a month away and it doesn't need to be 100% complete at that point. If you have an older version that you never published online you are free to use it of course.

A 'Bare Knuckles' album! YES! Can't contribute any quality music atm, but if you guys need some help with webdesign, I'll be happy to assist in my humble capacity.

In any event, more Sega Genesis goodness is always a good thing in my book. Plus, you can't go wrong with Yuzo Koshiro. ;)

;)
And there's a Mokram! Dude, without derailing the thread i wanna say it's good to see you around again. I hope things are getting better for you, man! :)

Keeping things on topic, i would have to agree with Gar here in the sense that it's probably better to make something fresh for a OCRemix project. If we were to use a track that is already out there online then it kinda weakens our release because, well, people will have already heard the song outside of the album. It takes away that 'brand new' factor that OCR's albums tend to have upon their release, if you catch what we're saying.

Our Zone Runners remix for the Player Select tune has been 90% completed since over a year ago and i've held off on releasing it on our own if only for the sake of this project having it first, that way keeping it fresh and original for the album.

Anyway. just my two British pence on that ~

Some bad news about the fan site Streets of Rage Online. http://www.soronline.net/main.htm

While it has been a center for bringing fans of SOR together it looks like the creator is backing off of updating the site for awhile.

...he also deleted the forums.

Looks like we'll need to turn to alternative sources to spread the buzz about the album but the good news is before the forum went down DJYuzoBoy and a few others said they would be helping in spreading the word!

Damn you Garpocalypse for ambushing me at MAGfest about this project.

Put me down for Moon Beach.

I'm pretty sure I was trying to cajole you into this thing with my dry wit and non-existent charm since before MAG!! Thanks for joining up! Moon Beach is yours!

Quick post-MAG update: I was able to meet with Detective Tuesday and Halc over the weekend to discuss the album and especially now that EDM specialist LadyWildfire has joined up this should be a beautifully diverse remix album! Also Phonetic Hero is able to be one of the talent evaluators for the album. I'm glad we have so many committed people on this project that are truly interested in seeing this album get completed.

Thanks for being patient to everyone who stuck with the album during this rebooting phase. Once we get moving it will be full steam toward the release!

Sorry guys. I think I'm gonna have to bow out again. The only way I can be part of this right now is if you choose one of my existing remixes on YouTube. Keep in mind that they still haven't exactly been heard by many. I'd submit my Wave 131 or Dreamer for here, if I could.

But it's having to remix a specific song to a deadline I struggle with. That's why I've never had much luck with OCR albums.
