Sonic and Chilli Dogs

Please direct your attention to the photo below and answer this one question, that has caused more problems than rationality should allow...Are those Green things Chilli Dogs or not? If you'd like to cite evidence please do, but this is as much about impression, as is about fact...I was under the impression that Chilli Dogs were an invention of the cartoon and not the game. If there is evidence that the Game was the first to make mention of Chilli Dogs being Sonic's favorite food, then that would surely alter my world view requiring I give up my worldly possessions, reevaluate my life and start anew as an ascetic in the desert, as I strive to regain inner peace from the shards of a shattered life.

Are you hungry right now friend? Do you usually walk into casinos and ask, "Is that a hotdog?" when you see any generally phallus shaped object? The object in question is more like a bumper from a pinball table. That's why he bounces off of it -- if it were a chili dog, he wouldn't bounce off of it, he'd simply grab it and begin eating it, or add it to his inventory in place of coins.... because really, what good are coins when you could be collecting chili dogs.

Also I'd be willing to wager the people who made the game didn't give much if any consideration to the story or backstory of Sonic, so whether he liked Chili dogs was probably not even known at that time. Seems more like an anime thing.

At first glance they do indeed look like (radioactive) chili dogs, but I'm conflicted. On one hand I think they're just poorly drawn bumpers, but on the other everything else looks pretty clear-cut and obvious. Those bumpers are somewhat sloppily drawn and vague compared to the rest, and the colors contrast in a way that reinforces the chili dog look. I see plenty of colors available in the palette that would have made it look suitably hotdog looking, but they went with neon green and black?

At this point I would have to conclude that they were intended to be chili dogs, but recolored in order to stand out from the rest of the background to better fulfill their purpose as bumpers.

As the comics(in which the chili dogs were prominently featured) began in 1992 and Sonic Spinball debuted in '93(and again in '95), it's plausible that they got the idea of chili dogs from there.

As anyone who has played it knows, those neo green bumpers actually do change colour when you hit them. They turn yellow and then red. They become more and more chilidog coloured with each strike. When they are struck a final time, they disappear. One could assume that Sonic found them the most appetizing in their red hue and indeed ingested them. Or they're just bumpers I dunno.

Yeah no, those are bumpers, sorry. I'm a massive Sonic fan (classic comics, classic cartoons, and classic games) and it never occurred to me that those could be chili dogs. They logically fit in the environment of the zone as bumpers, especially given the fact that nowhere else in the classic Sonic games is there a reference to chili dogs.

I'll be honest, they look closer to being some kind of sandwich viewed from the side than a chili dog to me. But as it's been said many times already, those are bumpers. Sonic was only into chili dogs in the 90's cartoons, the comics, and a short series of books I remember reading as a kid.
