  1. Bundeslang

    MnP 52: NieR - Grandma

Congratulations Brandon. Since everyone voted you first, I assume that you will win. I'll leave the other results to Hoboka, it's very close. And that's a big win for me. And about John Carpenter: I guess you mean the film director and not the game show contestant of 'Who Wants to Be A Millionaire' who won a million first and got 250k for charity later'... Funny coincidence is that I did a remix of that TV show music years ago: The Way to Become A Millionaire

  2. Okay, about the mixing, I would say the kick can be a little more noticeable (I barely feel it). The rimshot and snare could also be louder; they're kind of present, but not really enough in the front. They don't need to be super punchy, but they shouldn't be so quiet. I agree about the trombone needing a bit more expression, or simply a live recording; the legato notes are what's not quite convincing me, and a touch of vibrato on some notes can help. The bass is a touch loud, and that's mostly noticeable in the bass solo, and it's not a big deal IMO, but maybe reduce the EQ at about 100~150 Hz by 1~3 dB.

  4. Nice, this is a really different approach to the song - more playful than the original, at first, but as Skyline Drop mentioned, still with a subtly dark atmosphere to it. And the new reggae-style rhythms present the familiar melodies in a new and interesting light (a number of your progressions here have been stuck in my head since I first listened). The eerie choir entering the mix around 1:20, for example, does a good job of maintaining some of that haunting quality the original has - though I'll echo the concerns others have mentioned about the trombone, which is about the only thing that threw me off somewhat. Extra expression/humanization would help but I also think maybe a different, less artificial-sounding sample choice might be needed. The arrangement and buildups/breakdowns are great too. I like the fierceness of the organ at around 2:28, it serves as a reminder of the song's origins as a theme for a place full of dread and dangerous surprises. Same for the similar reprisal at 4:00, though I'll agree the sudden shift towards a happier tone at the end seems either out of place or needs a better, more gradual transition.

  5. So I did understand you right, and so my answer to: " Do I only hear the left or right panning? " Is the same; you will hear just one of the channels. Suppose you lose the right channel, all you will hear is just a mono signal of what's in the left channel. When the sound from the Canvas is hard panned to the right, there will be no sound at all. When it's panned to the left, it's the loudest. You need to wrap your head around the fact that there really isn't such a thing as left or right in signals. Stereo RCA out is two cables carrying separate mono signals. One is the "left", one is the "right". Panning the Canvas sound is just changing the volume balance between the two mono signals. You're shoving 2 mono signals via one connector into 1 mono input on the Behringer, and so one of them gets cut out. Let me say that again. You're shoving 2 mono signals via one connector (the 1/8" jack) into 1 mono input on the Behringer, and so one of them gets cut out. TO CONTRAST, the line-in on your computer knows how to process both of those channels. It is different from the Behringer. I'm not sure how to make this clearer at this point. There's only so much an explanation will do for you, you have to actually play with the technology to see it working. Would you like me to make a diagram for you? Would that help?' P.S. Don't tell me how to use the forums. I don't post here just for you, I post for everyone. Also, WHY are you using an audio interface and then just putting it into your computer's line-in anyway? That doesn't make any sense. That just brings the noise back. There's a USB cable on the back of the Behringer. You hook it up to your computer via USB and have FL Studio read the audio directly from the Behringer box. I think the reason for the confusion is that you're trying to record into this box and then direct monitor the Canvas sound straight towards the Behringer's outputs and then fire that out of the box into another cable into your computer's line in. It's unnecessary. Eliminate the computer line-in entirely, that's what you need to do.

  6. I concur, the levels are breaking this. The arrangement is fun, and the progression makes sense and has a cool flow, but the levels being all over the place are holding it back. The overall volume should be revised, make sure there is no distortion caused by things being too loud. You should also try to obtain a better balance by reviewing the levels of each track. To do this, I recommend prioritizing each track, muting them all, and then unmuting them one by one following your priorities. Adjust the volume for each track you unmute as you go to try and put everything in its rightful place. When this is done, you should fine-tune the frequency usage of every track by EQ'ing them appropriately, which should help build a cleaner soundscape. This has good potential, please keep at it! 7. Ouch, those levels. Right off the bat the arpeggio is very resonant around 1.5khz , you may want to make it less peaky. It's not only the arpeggios as throughout the mix it was a very common ocurrence to hear nasty peaks around the mid-highs. The overall mix feels too loud and overcompressed, to the point where I noticed some distortion going in the last busy section before the end, The pads need to be eq'd separately from the bass as they're obscuring it in the busy sections. I liked the arrangement though. Transitions weren't that great but I liked the feel and energy of the track, little details like the bending synth in the break around 2:20 gave this a lot more personality. The piano chords in the background helped give it a darker feel than the original and I liked that you tried to infuse some more melodic content into the track than what was in the original. This is a good start but the production issues are glaring and need fixing. NO (Resubmit)

  8. MILESTONE UPDATE: Thanks Odai! Happy to be aboard and I hope the Hobo feels better soon. Everyone send him positive and/or sexy thoughts to speed his recovery! As alluded to in my very first line of text on this post; this update is a milestone in that we have received our first completed track! @Ganaé has finished his track for Light & Darkness (otherwise known as the main title theme) and it shall have the honour of being the very first entry to be marked as Blue on the front page. Give him an enormous round of virtual applause! Deadlines are gradually encroaching so I hope you're all beavering away (by which I mean keeping busy, not building dams and causing entire rivers to divert course and flood nearby villages. It's OK if you are though; everyone needs a hobby). If anyone requires a reminder of when their WIP is due please feel free to PM me and I'll sort you out. There's still 9 tracks plus the bonus medley to be claimed so if anyone feels like picking up an extra source or if a new player wishes to enter the game, uh, I mean wishes to claim a track then please PM myself or Odai with your choice(s). Keep up the excellent work everyone! You are all awesome!

  9. This is actually really cool. I like that the remix is a little slower than that frenetic source! I can't even imagine trying to dance to that. The remix actually sounds pretty dry. The shaker could use some velocity variation as well as a bit of reverb. The snare sounds too heavy for the soundscape (I love the rimshot though). I like the vocal bits, they could use some delay. I like the breakdown with the piano and plucked instrument. My biggest issue with this track is it's overall volume, it's smashed to smithereens. In the densest parts of the track, such as 3:05-3:40 I hear some pretty heavy distortion. You definitely need to revisit the mastering and/or the mixing/balancing to get this distortion eliminated. I'd love to hear each element in this mix occupying it's own space in the soundscape. Other than those issues, this track works for me and I like it. NO (please clean up mix/master and resubmit)
