OC ReMix Project Bones Database?
ella guro replied to Less Ashamed Of Self's topic in General Discussion
I used to post my reason project files or .it files, but those links are long gone. I've always liked this idea, though. Sometimes it's hard when you have some samples or other stuff that won't export within a program, so you can't hear the whole mix. And for recorded stuff, it obviously takes up a lot more space. My view is that it is always nice to see what other people are doing and study that, because it can help you see how to do things that you wouldn't have tried before. So yeah, I'd like to see more people doing this but I can understand why some may not want to. -
That was great and the music was epic! The music just goes to show you the potential awesomeness of stuff done with a tracker. I didn't finish the demo, but I'm gonna try to pick up the full version at some point in the future.

That reminds me - Thanks for the Powerglove CD! I got it a few days back. It's strangely appropriate given that I wore a powerglove at Mag...

This site has a list of "hidden gems" for each console. Definitely worth checking out: http://www.racketboy.com/guide/hidden-gems Anachronox for the PC is one of my old favorites. A great Japanese-style RPG with really great voice acting, art design, and a good story. Rise of the Triad is an overlooked shooter for the PC with an awesome soundtrack. Iggy's Reckin' Balls for n64 is fun as fuck. Once you get the hang of it, it's awesome. Jet Force Gemini for the n64 is not necessarily obscure, but it often doesn't get a lot of attention and it's one of my favorite games, with an amazing soundtrack. If anyone here hasn't played the gameboy version of Donkey Kong, they're in for a treat. Same goes for Wario Land 2. I had a PC with DOS before I ever had a game system so I'm partial to a lot of old DOS games, but there's too many to list here.

DKC2 - "Bipolar Magma" (Hot Head Bop/Mining Melancholy) rv1
ella guro replied to hRook's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
11 megs! make sure if you submit this that it's under 8MiB and 192kbps (try VBR v2 or something like that) Bring the drums way up and the bass down a bit! (did you play the drums? they're nice!) Having the drums way down and the synths in the foreground panned to the right/left like that isolates things from each other soundwise. The drums really have to be the center for something like this, especially when they're as nice as they are. Some other mixing issues. Mostly some of the sounds (the synth panned to the left...possibly the right, I can't remember if I have my comp audio flipped, and then that piano sound) are a bit dry and could use a little more processing, or just something so that they don't cut through so much. Right now you have these dirty drums and these really sharp synths and the sounds don't mesh too well. That kind of stuff also makes the arrangement seem tighter because the sounds are more connected to each other. Reverb, chorus, etc...that kind of stuff can do wonders in filling out your sound. Nice organ soloing, and I like the crazy chords you hold onto after (though some people might not). I would also like to hear more guitar in there! Turn it up when it's on. I think those piano parts could be worked on to be a little more interesting, and you might want to get a better sample. The arrangement is not incredibly risky, but it's funky and you do some cool soloing with it. I was kinda bummed that you only brought the second part of the melody at 3:54. If you're gonna wait that long to bring that part in I honestly think you could go on a groove with that part and expand it further, maybe 45 seconds to a minute longer. That section seems kind of tacked on as is. Same goes for the ending. Maybe just go on a nice pretty groove with that second theme and fade out there, instead of returning back to the beginning part? If you worked on the production/mixing and did a bit more with some of the parts, especially after 3:54 I think this could pass OCR. As is, though, the judges will definitely pick apart the production issues. Nice job so far! Keep working on it! -
thanks for the suggestion! I'm gonna ask Dhsu what he wants to do and we'll figure it out. I think Taucer wants to do Jade's theme anyway, so someone may end up doing that regardless of what happens.
-
audio fidelity: I actually wanted to see if Terra/Kefka with Dhsu was ok with everyone because I wanna do a theme for a female hero. If you really wanna do Locke badly I'm sure someone can call you out before Dhsu makes up his mind and I could do something else. But I dunno, I guess we'll see what happens. Just letting you know.
-
I was interested in Jade too (since she's the only girl character other than samus), but I don't even remember what her theme was and I'm probably just gonna take what I can get. (btw for those who don't already know I'm an OCR regular under a different name - I used to go by Adhesive_Boy, but am not anymore due to... no longer being a boy).

question just so it's clear: so the bad dudes are picking their tracks first, then the OCR regulars pick, right?

Double Dragon dubstep remix (WIP, almost ready)
ella guro replied to Jarski's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
For future reference - if you're gonna submit, you need the mix to be under 192kbps. Just do VBR V1 or V2 and it should average under 192. I agree with J3 that this isn't OCR material yet, and that isn't dynamic enough. Your lead stuff is very nice and energetic, but the background is often pretty static. You have this pad that just kind of sits there and doesn't do anything. It really bogs down the pace of the mix. It's gotta be doing something more interesting. Nice NES percussion breakdown, I'd say you could make it even crazier. Don't hold back there. Your percussion overall is decent, but I think you need a bit more going on to give things more forward momentum. Layer a couple more percussion parts into the mix, see how that works. This mix is pretty solid all-around, there just always feels like there's something missing texturally. Try using a more interesting sound for that string pad in the background, maybe add some sort of synth countermelody in the mix, and more percussion. Just in general, the point of these suggestions is to make things feel a bit more alive and dynamic, like they have forward momentum, if that makes any sense. That's the kind of stuff that keeps a listener interested. You want things to compliment the nice lead stuff you have going on right now. You have good stuff here so far, though. Just take it further! -
You mentioned this already but the strings do not sound realistic when they're playing runs of more than a couple of notes (they kind of blend together). It's actually really jarring because it sounds like you have a good quality sample. Stuff is mixed pretty well. That string sample is the only thing that really bothers me. It's either slow to come in or cuts off really strangely. You're gonna have to do more automation of it, at the very least, to get it to sound tighter and more realistic. But anyway, good start so far! Keep going!

A very sexy Suzumebachi(25) and Dyne(107) Birthday Thread.

HAPPY DOUBLE BIRTHDAY suzu and dyne!!! Listen to some double music! -
I apologize if this has been answered already but I didn't see it in the thread: Is it gonna be up to the mixer or up to everybody to vote and decide which themes represent which characters (for those characters who don't have clear themes for themselves)?

wip Lucky Number Show remix from Pokémon (F!N!SHED)
ella guro replied to BlackPanther's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I was listening to the source on youtube while your song came up in foobar and they synced perfectly! That was pretty awesome. Some of the synth work you have here is neat, especially around 1:20 and on. You need to bring the bass forward, I might change the sound and EQ it so it's a bit deeper and works with the percussion to give it more of a backbeat instead of being kind of distorted like it is now. In general, you could use some EQing and processing here and there. Arrangementwise, just make it longer and expand it further, maybe have a breakdown or something like that. I'm not incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to this genre, but I'm sure you'll have some ideas. pretty nice work so far! keep it up! -
The Son Of A Goddess (Theme of Mac Anu)
ella guro replied to Harmonious Dissonance's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
They don't let you remote link to vgmusic, fyi. Not bad sounds, but you could use a lot more. There's only a few instruments here, you need a lot more layers. I don't think that clicking sound works very well. And some of the mixing is a bit odd - I like that distant violin sound but it's put too much in the background, it being the melody and all. Also, shouldn't this have drums if it's an 80's electronic mix? There isn't much of any arrangement of the original here so far. You really need to expand things further arrangmentwise and sound wise before I can comment more on it. good luck! -
New AAI:Miles Edgeworth Great Revival Hard Rock Remix...
ella guro replied to TheUllas's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
you removed the video! I would've commented otherwise. Also, you might want to try tindeck or the ocrwip server for uploads. There's info stickied here. Youtube uploads are nice for comments and stuff, but it's better quality if you try one of those. -
Basically every one of the sections you go through could be fleshed out more. There's usually only ever 2 or 3 things happening at the same time, and it's just not enough for things to really gel and start to feel musical. And a lot of the samples could use some processing (EQing, reverb, that kind of stuff) and work varying the not velocities so they sound a little bit more natural. The guitar sample has to go, IMO. It's just not believable. Many of the sections could use some kind of momentum and transition into each other, too, because they kind of jump around randomly. On the plus side, the drums are really nice. You just need to do a lot more work with your arrangement, so it has a clear progression and a purpose. What's here is a not bad start by any means, though.
-
Productionwise, the sound quality here is a bit midi. There's a lot of cool synths, but you need to pan them and EQ them so they're not all dead center. Some processing - reverb, distortion, flange, that kind of stuff might make them sound better also. It also sounds like the whole mix is put under some kind of reverb because it sounds like it's underwater, I'd take that effect off so it's a bit clearer. The arrangement itself is pretty neat, and I like the stuff you have going on with the sounds. It's nutty stuff, in a good way. Right now you just go through a few iterations of the song and then do crazy FX though, so I'd like to hear you go a little further. I think there is a lot of really cool stuff here, but I have to be honest and say that I seriously doubt this will be accepted to OCR, arrangementwise or productionwise. That's not saying anything about your abilities, because this is good stuff. Judging by this mix alone, you have a whole lot of potential. Keep at it!

Totakaland (Totaka's Song attempt)
ella guro replied to Matt E. Waldman's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I think it would be really interesting if you integrated in arrangement ideas from many of the different versions of the song. This is pretty neat. It's a little spare right now, but I like what you're going for. It's very cartoony, in a good way. Reminds me a little of Banjo Kazooie music...or some of the Beach Boys stuff from the album SMiLE if you've ever heard that. Keep at it! -
I really like the sound you have going on, but I think it could use a few more layers to the sound. It might be cool to have the whole original - melody, harmony, drums, etc. all mixed in the background like the way you have the melody right now, so it's real peppy. And then keep the atmospheric, flowing kind of stuff that's in the foreground, maybe adding a few more textures there as well. So it's like really heavy atmosphere in the foreground and like a more peppy melody playing on like a distant speaker in the background. That's just an idea, though. I thought I'd bring it up because you're sort of going in that direction, and I think it could be really neat if you push what you have farther. Also that effect you have at :56 and other places is interesting but I don't know how I feel about it. I think I like it, but maybe you could get some more momentum into those crescendos, like a little bit of percussion, so it doesn't just feel like you placed one sound effect there. That's up to you, though. Anyway, I think this is really neat stuff and I hope you do more with it! Good luck!

Most of these costumes beyond the more obvious ones were just not very well done. Not any better than a typical cosplay fare you can find online. I really wish they would've been more creative.
