  1. Bah. Not fair. Then again, the Pats cheated before.
  2. "Shinesparks" Super Metroid (SNES) - Maridia Rocky Underwater Area Kenji Yamamoto, Minako Hamano Name: Nicholas Tam Website: http://www.nicholastam.ca Forums ID: 20602 For this jazz combo rendering of "Maridia" from Super Metroid, I set the bass line in marimba to get a more metallic timbre and a more versatile sound in general. The two keyboard parts were fully improvised and recorded in one take apiece. The song's original chord progression is inherently fascinating as it is, so I took the opportunity to stock it full of minor sevenths and deliberately pattern my piano style after the modal voicings of Herbie Hancock, adding some spontaneous rhythmic complexity wherever I saw fit. Share and enjoy. - Nick -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://snesmusic.org/v2/download.php?spcNow=sm - "Theme of Super Metroid" (sm-16.spc) & "Maridia Rocky Underwater Area" (sm-24.spc) Weird little piece of work. The comping/noodling isn't terrible, but it's not impressive either and feels like it goes off the rails too often. That being said, that's the direction you wanted to take it in, and it's not really a major issue for me. Sounded like the track distorted at bit at 1:09 and 1:43, and several other places I haven't noted. Gotta listen to the track on some headphones before you send it in, the devil's in the details. Aight, so where were the source tracks from Super Metroid used? Since the track is 5:20-long, I need at least 2:40's worth of overt source usage for the arrangement to be at least 50% Metroid. Otherwise, that's not enough to be a focused enough tribute to the game music compared to the original writing ideas. Well, Palpable mentioned the chord progression usage as something that I could be overlooking, but I'm not really picking it up, plus that's a pretty weak connection to carry the majority of any arrangement. Barring anything I'm missing, I'm hearing the tunes from: *:00-1:11 *3:14-3:38 (though the source usage was pretty faint/marginalized in the background while more comping took place) *4:07-4:49 So about 2:17's worth of Super Metroid source tune usage that I was picking up. Of course, if I'm missing anything significant, I'd be glad to reassess it, but it sounds like you're mostly going off and doing your own thing. Needs more source arrangement involved for my vote. Aside from that, the distortion would have to be fixed. You definitely put out some good material Nick, and I wanna see you up on OCR; been enjoying your material since VGMix2. If you're willing to revisit this piece, I'd love to see something more Metroid focused to really bring it home. The jazzy take on these themes you had is a good concept. NO (resubmit)
  3. All you haters, shaddap about the lyrics. The lyrics are excellent. No hating on the lyrics.
  4. http://tzone.org/~llin/psf/packs2/Xenogears_psf.rar - 216 "Awakening" Opening texture felt a bit rough, but once it kicked up at :23 it reminds me a lot of Christian Pacaud's stuff, which is definitely a good thing. Drum sound doesn't quite fit to me, but I'm picky, plus its couched well in the soundscape, so it wasn't nearly a significant issue. Solid stuff so far. Cool use of the source verse in the background at 1:07-1:27, though the separation could have been a bit more distinct. I thought 2:29-3:11 was overcompressed, but even then I wasn't dying. Anyway, no need to really comment in depth on the rest. I'm definitely feeling it. Seems like the only salient criticism is on the production side, but even then this seemed OK. Sounds a lot more like a YES (conditional) than a NO. The arrangement concept and execution are too strong to be held back. If zirc and Palp say this needs to be fixed, I trust them on it, but I wasn't hit the same way. Cool stuff, Justin, good luck with the rest of the vote.
  5. Man, I never posted on this song, but this was one of my old favorites from my early days here that somehow got lost in the shuffle. I probably haven't heard this since I played it on VGF many years ago. Great arrangement that holds up very well today with the trademark Star sounds and flavor. Definitely one to grab for the conservative arrangement that has its own voice.
  6. Alexander Brandon wrote the original, right? If you mailed him, I'm sure he'd hit you back with why the song title is what it is.
  7. Pretty much everything DarkeSword said, including you being a douche. There's no point in needlessly disrespecting projects from soundtracks you don't care for. Sorry, bro, but complaining is obviously the wrong way to go about getting anyone to do a Shadowgate project.
  8. We both have stuff on the way. Chris's (a collab with Christian Pacaud), I've got 0 idea when that's gonna go up. All depends on when the Tales series project is released. Mine'll be my collab with zircon and Big Giant Circles, "Adrenalyne Kyck", where I provided spoken word hotness.
  9. Panel de Pon (Tetris Attack before the Yoshi's Island character influx): Favorites can be grabbed from here. LT: Added the series, thanks! Fixed some mistakes in the character names. http://www.themushroomkingdom.net/ta_pdp.shtml#char Excellent stuff. Along with the Tetris Attack avatars, these are now in a new category called Nintendo ~ Puzzle League! North and South: The top row shows player-controlled ranks (hence the flag backgrounds); bottom row is computer-controlled ("com" in the game). Wasn't sure which backgrounds worked better. Individuals are located here. LT: Kinda ugly sprites, but they have their charm. I added all 6 with the Player backgrounds, since I liked those backgrounds better than the Com ones. Cool game choice! Kunio from Downtown (the Japanese version of River City Ransom): LT: Bueno. The Cheetahmen (Action 52 appearances): LT: Ha, about the only way I'd ever add ugly sprites like these is if they were the Cheetahmanz! The Kid from I Wanna Be The Guy: LT: Bueno. Interesting Wiki article.
  10. Maybe we could do a torrent. I don't think we've addressed that possibility yet actually. Just letting y'all know we're definitely 100% done with the judging of the entries! I'm hoping we can announce everything before the end of the weekend! I think that mostly depends on djp's schedule.
  11. Kabukibear Justin Lincoln thevgguitarist@yahoo.com userid: 23052 Final Fantasy XI The Kingdom of San d'Oria Title: While San d'Oria Sleeps --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://tzone.org/~llin/psf/packs2/FFXI_psf2.rar - 103 "The Kingdom of San d'Ori" Opened up with some liberal stuff before hitting the source at :24. Melodically, this seemed pretty straightforward of a rendition, but stripping down a piece is a valid form of arrangement, clarified by djp with Brad Smith's Secret of Mana mix "Mystic Invasion" (still mad that got removed). The new countermelodic writing fit very comfortably with the arrangement of the source melody. Last note at 2:57 sounded awkward, but that was about the only crit. I don't think I'm being soft on the interpretation here, but for some multitracked guitar, I thought this was a reasonable arrangement with a completely different feel and not merely feeling transposed to guitar with a very understated arrangement. Pot Hocket would have gone for something decidedly more interpretive, but I'm ok with this. Pretty chill, Justin. Looking forward to hearing more from you matter which way this one goes. YES
  12. Original submission: http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=13328 Remixer name: Vidilian Game: Fire Emblem (GBA) Songs: Archsage Athos, Silent Ground and Knight's Oath Resub. Completely different from the original submission. I described that one as an epic lullaby. At the very least, I think this resub actually fits that description. -------------------------------------------------------------- Definitely an improvement over last time, but almost anything would have been. http://www.zophar.net/gsf/fireemblem_gsf.rar - "The Archsage Athos", "Silent Ground" & "A Knight's Oath" Opened up with the plucked string instrumentation sounding too mechanical and exposed, something repeated at 1:52. The bowed strings also sounded very fake and exposed. The low brass sample was exposed terribly from 3:32-3:34. You could have layered the brass to mitigate how fake it sounded. You need to watch it with the harp writing, because IMO it clashed a lot with the stuff in the foreground (e.g. :38, :50, 1:01). Wrong note with the woodwind at 4:01 as well. The 2:26-3:08 section went too long, practically running in place, and didn't sustain interest, plus the instrumentation throughout the track felt too flimsy, even going for a lullaby. An improvement, but still a tiresome (not in a good way) arrangement. The sounds aren't used properly to fill up the space, there were the sour notes previously mentioned, plus the arrangement still dragged its heels. There was more overt direction here, which was good, but the execution was still really raw, and the writing still didn't provide any sort of hook. NO
  13. ReMixer - Evahn email - fungshway@hotmail.com website - myspace.com/evahnder game arranged - Super Mario Bros. 3 songs arranged - Warp Zone theme This originally started out as me just picking and strumming around two chords on guitar, and when I wanted to put some leads over them, I accidentally stumbled on the Warp Zone melody. The way I recorded it, it sounds pretty laid-back and kind of sleepy, I think. ---------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.zophar.net/nsf/smb3.zip - Track 15 Pretty liberal take here in terms of the supporting writing, with the source finally arriving overtly from :31-1:04, then more from 1:16-1:49. Would have loved to have heard the countermelody of the original used somewhere in this arrangement, but the supporting writing was still excellent. The slightly off timing of something like 1:32 shouldn't be there in such a shot piece. Everything's gotta be clicking on all cylinders. The ending beginning at 1:46 wasn't a drastic departure from the tone and style of the previous sections, so the ending felt too sudden. A little something to end this in a more resolute way would probably be good. Still, you did have a notable enough dynamic curve to the arrangement where "I see what you did there." The silence trailing the end of the track at 2:10 needs to be trimmed off. If I were The Wingless, I'd YES this pretty quickly. I definitely love the theme, and this interpretation here is pretty nice. The execution is a little rough, but it's nothing that can't be tightened up with another couple of play-throughs. That being said, the concept and execution are ok for me. It's a bit off-kilter, but it's not ashamed of it. Probably gonna get Jesse to go WTF, but I'm channeling Wing on this one. Maybe weed will be down with this. This should be stronger, but what's in place I'm feeling enough to give it the nod. YES (borderline)
  14. Yeah, that'll get it done. You've clearly got the touch.
  15. Just make sure djp sees what you said directly. It'll light a fire under his ass to post more mixes. He's always legitimately busy, but just go "nigga, u lazy" and he'll post some more to the front page.
  16. Correct. To me, it'd be something more like seeing if people with proven skills like Bean, Rama, Cyan_Ide, Maximo, etc. could come up with something OCR-themed that looked cool, that could be produced, and that people would be interested in purchasing. But counter to what Chad was implying, I don't see anything wrong with eventually opening things up to the community, which is full of visual artistic talent, much like DeviantArt does for their limited edition gear. Not by giving out the logo mind you, but by simply putting out the call and seeing what comes back creatively. Also noting that of course there's a huge hi-res logo. It's just not publicly available, AFAIK. No, I do not have it.
  17. We all took the Holiday time off. Most of us haven't really gotten back into it, myself included. Real life here. Though I should speedrun these bitches, a la DarkeSword or Vig. Gotta be careful though. It's an art form not to be attempted by just anybody. Luckily I've got the Lightning Round of The Wingless on my side.
  18. We'd actually like to diversify our merch. Doug, we will pay you with gold bullion from the farthest corners of the earth in order to have you design cool stuffs to buy. That goes for anyone else. We'll bring this up in a more organized fashion once we have some actual $ available to produce a product.
  19. Just bumping in the hopes that other people will go "Ailsean, YES!" and he'll send something down the line. Anyone with me?
  20. Study video of the Street Fighter masters at work: http://www.vgfrequency.com/?p=252 IMO, you'll be all set once you watch that.
