  3. Shizzle, I know the Baltimore meetup was just a couple of days ago, but by May 13th it seems like a lot of students will be done with finals. I'm not sure when I'm moving back to Atlanta next week, but hopefully I'm flexible. They're gonna be performing Portal. We've gotta represent. Thanks to Justin hooking us up with the news.

  5. Gentlemen, here's another attempt at a mix of a game for the Sega Genesis that had some pretty cool tracks to it. I havent seen any other mixes for this decent game.. so I figured I'd give it a shot. Theres not much variation from the original.. I DIDN’T NOT just take a midi file and add new sounds.. the melody I thought was pretty catchy..and I thought it was worth a try..nonetheless whatever your decision I hope you guys enjoy it as my last 2 submissions failed to make it..lets see if this one makes it thru thanks.. --------------------------------------------------------------- Don't forget to title your mixes. Strong source tune choice. Midnight Resistance, where have you been all my life??? http://project2612.org/download.php?id=182 - 01 "Flood of Power (BGM 1)" Cover-ish, but I'm liking the treatment here, giving the source tune a much more downbeat feel. I'd say this was your most polished-sounding submission yet, Jose. The beat patterns had some decent fills, but felt repetitive overall. Along with that, the dynamic curve of the track was pretty flat. At only 2:18-long though, the arrangement only scratched the surface of what this tune is capable of. Honestly, at that length, nothing should be repeating itself for the composition to be fully fleshed-out and developed. More dynamic contrast and further exploration & interpretation of the ideas here would get this in a lot stronger contention. Please keep working on this one, bro, and use the resources and feedback available here. I'm loving the base here, and I'd love to see you get this posted in some form. NO (rework/resubmit)
  6. OC ReMixer SGX Wins OurStage.com Grand Prize; zircon/Goldin and Audix finish top 15 By: Larry Oji, larryoji@ocremix.org May 3, 2008 College Park, MD -- Danny "SGX" Adler, OC ReMixer, emerged victorious in OurStage.com's April 2008 Music Finals. Adler's Electronic channel-winning song "Coactive" bested fourty-three other channel winners out of a pool of over 27,000 entries to claim first place. Along with the $5,000 Grand Prize, Adler (www.sgxmusic.com) is also eligible for several other prizes and awards offered by OurStage and its partners. The full version of Adler's "Coactive" is the opening track of his original Electronic album, Chroma, available from his website, CDBaby.com, and Apple iTunes. SGX's OurStage Music Finals victory follows up the previous month's win by OC ReMix judge Jillian "pixietricks" Goldin with her original New Age/World track "Hajime." OurStage (www.ourstage.com) was launched in 2007 to increase the exposure of independent musicians and filmmakers through its democratic "battle" voting system, where users are able to judge each entry against all other competitors. OurStage winners earn cash prizes, along with the potential of other perks including magazine coverage, opportunities to perform at concerts and festivals, and mentoring sessions with established musicians and filmmakers. "At 11PM, I was resigned to getting 20th. [...] Seriously, you guys are the best! Thanks for sitting there clicking a web page for hours for me!" said Adler to the OC ReMix community moments after learning of his win. OverClocked ReMix provides support for developing artists for both game music arrangements and original music. Along with several other OC ReMixers, Adler's music has been featured in Synthetic Light Studios' popular web-based rhythm game Flash Flash Revolution. Fellow OC ReMixers Andrew "zircon" Aversa & Jillian Goldin (as a duo) and Greg "Audix" Michalec also placed fourteenth and fifteenth in OurStage's April 2008 Music Finals after wins in the New Age/World and Techno/Club/Dance channels, respectively. So i decided to make a remix of the soundtrack ( because it was impossible to find ones created by someone else online, i even tried VGmusic.com). I have always wanted to be a part of this website, even when i was young! now i can submit my music --------------------------------------------------------------- http://akumunsf.good-evil.net/S/Sqoon.nsf - Track 11 Cool on the sampling of in-game action to open things up for that nostalgia hit. The computer voice intro at :27 was sounding cheesy. The synth design and beats all seemed vanilla to start. The theme finally kicked in at 1:14 with a fairly conservative take. Right from the get-go there, the whole track sounded muddy and lossy-sounding. Seemed like some of the higher frequencies were cut. The addition of the breakbeats at 2:02 didn't really have any synergy with the rest of the music. As soon as it changed into some thicker beats and more effects on the lead at 2:26, the whole track became cluttered. Seemed like there was some distortion going on as well until 3:02. Arrangement-wise, the source melody was treated conservatively, but I wasn't feeling the supporting writing at all, which felt very basic. Summing it up, this was basically a case of an arrangement that felt too straightforward and simplistic, along with bland sound choices and textures, and poorly done production. And I'm gonna sound like a stickler, but I thought using the exact same in-game sampling from the beginning for the ending was on the lazy side. I'd rather two different clips were used. Stick around, Quincy, and use the resources here to help improve your game. I liked the potential of arranging the Sqoon soundtrack, and what you have here is a decent base that needs more polish. NO
  8. Nope, he's too busy now to make it since his interweb died yesterday and messed up his plans, plus we've gotta drive up to Reading, PA at 4AM the next morning for TooManyGames. Chances of me going to Baltimore are also slim, since I honestly do have stuff I need to take care of before The Lady & I move. I gotta switch my vote to NO. :'-(
  9. Original Decision: http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=3623 ReMixers: ambient, DragonAvenger Game: Streets of Rage, Streets of Rage 2 Track Arranged: Stage 7 (SoR), Dreamer (SoR2) You know the rest. Guys, I know, I am submitting another mix, even though last year I was convinced that I had pretty much retired from mixing, and I indicated that in my submission of Back 2 Skala. And I actually didn't touch anything related to music until a couple of months ago, when I felt this craving to do something creative. Not so easy to give it up, remixing is quite addicting. Unfortunately, I noticed that my skills got rusty even in such a short time, and I couldn't start a mix from scratch. Or maybe I was just lazy. Either way, I decided to dust off an old mix of the elevator stage from SOR that was rejected back in Jan/Feb 2006, and fix it up. I replaced the drums, gave them a lot more pump, added some transition (including a section from SOR2 - Dreamer), and was pretty much ready to submit. But, somewhere in the middle of that, I started listening to a little more of vocal house, and started kinda digging it. So, to make a long story short, I got in touch with DragonAvenger, who very kindly agreed to help me add some vocals to the track. She was great to work with and I'm looking forward to working with her again soon. Here is what she had to say about the mix: "This was a first time for me doing a song like this, so it was difficult at first to come up with something that was short and sweet. I knew the basic idea of what I wanted to go for, but finding the right words took some time. It was pretty sweet to see how my voice could be manipulated in the end." I am very happy with the result, and I hope you guys are too. This is a fun little track. It is not quite as edgy as B2S, but I hope you find it funky and energetic. Once again, zircon helped a great deal with this remix. His advice pushes my work beyond what I would be comfortable with. Tamer also had some useful advice that I have implemented. Special thanks to Skryp for hosting the submission file, and Nina V. and Will H. for exposing me to some good house music. Till next time! ambient ---------------------------------------------------------------- http://project2612.org/download.php?id=53 - "Violent Breathing" http://project2612.org/download.php?id=56 - "Dreamer" (influenced 1:43-2:12 of the mix) The arrangement, I'm generally feeling. I think the a lack of a true melodic hook based off the source felt like a negative at first, but there doesn't need to be one for this to work, so that initial thought was just personal bias. I was never really feeling how the claps sounded from :14-on. They're layered nicely, but something wasn't right in how they sat in the mix, and they felt exposed as a result. I liked the writing on DA's vocals, but it was the production that felt off for some portions. It could be a byproduct of having heard the instrumental to this mix several times, but for some portions her voice felt too upfront and stapled on top of the track, not really meshing into the overall soundscape. As a result, the source arrangement sometimes felt inadvertently drowned down compared to the vocals. The timing was awkward for the "You bring me down" sections of 1:57-2:12 & 2:56-3:12. I would have adjusted them to be more on beat. Cool lyrics. I actually would have gone for the more provocative "Let me show you what our bodies can do" instead of "Let me show you what my body can do", since there was "Let our hearts collide" earlier, but it's not a negative criticism. I thought the lyrics were very smart for the genre. Awesome effects on DA's voice at 1:00 building into the chorus section at 1:06. Same from 2:49-2:56 where the vocals got turned into a ethereal pad. Little touches like that really hooked it up. Overall, I would have balanced the parts differently, but I can see how it would be tough given the level of density here. Nonetheless, I loved Alex's very interpretive treatment of "Violent Breathing", while DragonAvenger's vocals added a nice new dimension that filled in the gaps. As a instrumental track, there was something missing to really make the whole thing click. DA's involvement gave the piece what it needed to feel complete. Definitely a great mix for the club. YES
  10. Hello, lads and ladies of the OCRemix jury! Here's my latest creation and contribution to the game remixing world. I hope it's to your liking, despite its shortness. * Your ReMixer name: Makke Submission Information * Name of game(s) arranged: Forbidden Forest * Name of individual song(s) arranged: Eeer, main title? It's the first subtune of the HVSC-file. * Name of remix: Spider Surfin' * Additional information about game: Game - Forbidden Forest Released by - Combi Year - 1983 Composer - Paul Norman System - The Almighty Commodore 64. * Link to the original soundtrack: * Link to remix: * Your own comments about the mix: The lenth is mainly due to the fact that the original source material doesn't give you an awful lot to work with, but also to keep it in distinct surf-style - i.e. brief, to the point, and rocking! Makke ---------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.c64.org/HVSC/MUSICIANS/N/Norman_Paul/Forbidden_Forest.sid - Subtune 1/18 Have faith, good sir! You really could get more out of this brief arrangement. But yeah, as it, there's just not that much there and this didn't come across as a fully developed piece. "Don't Go Walking Slow" had a lot more unrelated original writing in there, but it also stretched the actual source tune further. I <3 your work as always, but this needs more development and substance. Coming up with more variations of subtune 1, adding in original material, and adding in ideas from subtune 2, would all help this have a better shot at passing. But if you're OK with what's in place now, no hate here. I'm always looking forward to your next works! NO
  11. Original Decision: http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=14375 Hey yall, I fixed the problem with the midranges in this song, now it sounds full and a lot better (at least in my cans) so hopefully yall will enjoy this as much as i enjoyed making it.. I Know........ this song is way overdone as well as everything finalfantasy but i started making this song before i realized how much it has been remixed.. guess i have the same taste as a lot of remixers. oh well! Enjoy! http://1makes2.tripod.com JenovaFlavoredMateria Michael O’Shea Soundforu@hotmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://tzone.org/~llin/psf/packs2/FF7_psf.rar - 214 "J-E-N-O-V-A" Short and sweet. The overall mixing was cleaner and better, but your textures were still empty and exposed weaknesses in some of the sample quality and sequencing, exactly in the areas criticized last time. Leaving the arrangement the same, Mike, if the track had more padding and/or density during those sections, the end result would sound a lot better. So basically, some improvement in the drum writing for the emptier sections, but you still need meat on the bones for those portions. Hopefully the others can elaborate further, Mike. I still really like the potential here. NO (resubmit)
  12. Pretty disappointing in that all of the black music is getting voted down so hard, as there were several good cuts there. Seems to the nature of the beast with OurStage, which is unfortunate because "Come Over" by Tammy Harris (JVC Jazz Fest), "Giving Love" by Call Me RideOut (Alternative Hip-Hop), "My Dreams" by Jackie Rae (R & B / Soul) and "3 Codes" by Loose of The BFD Clique (Gangsta Rap) were all pretty good. Lesson is that if you have black music, you will NEVER get a shot at that $5,000. Seems like black users aren't as involved in the community and others users who simply aren't fans of those genres can't help but vote those tracks down sharply. Might as well do OurStage: Urban to better target that audience. Death metal though, I dunno what they're gonna do. "Stoney Balogna" by Bill Smith (10k Lakes) was also interesting. "Robots in Love" by Bree Sharp (Pop) was actually pretty sharp despite not being a fan of the genre. The lyrics were pretty decent, and once the instrumentation got more complex, it got better. "I Let Lie" by ThePZP (Experimental) had a couple of rougher spots with the vocals, and the production was rough, but was otherwise really cool.
  13. "WHOA, nice graphics!" "I'd like to my hands on THAT game!" Ok, now it's time for the periodic request for Gux's Powerglove commercial remix. But yeah, if Sega was smart, they'd pull those guys in and pay for that game, then make a boatload of cash off it from WiiWare, rather than C&D it.
  14. Fun video! Yeah, V8 should have them do a commercial.
  15. Because djp wanted people to go to the website, and putting the URL in the album field was the most effective way of doing that. Many music player programs don't display the Comments by default. If he'd done the aforementioned suggestion, the site wouldn't have gained traffic as quickly. It's been a good choice.
  16. The suggestions here are appreciated, but we already know what information we currently want in ID3 tags, and all recent ReMixes are tagged that way. The site currently uses Helium to tag mixes. We know the old mixes are inconsistent. If you don't mind going through some of the recently posted mixes from the front page and checking THOSE tags for what you feel they're missing, that would give us better suggestions to go off of. For instance, I know we don't tag any of the mixes with iTunes album art. SgtRama also pointed out some issues with the FF7 album tagging when viewed in iTunes. Thanks to anyone who looks into this and offers suggestions.
  17. Awesome compilation, Martin! Of course, some of the stuff is new to me, while some of the others are already like old favorites to me. It's a testament to the consistency of your work in the past 5 years that you can go back that far in order to put this together. Most people in the community get scared of revisiting any of their past material. Thanks very much for including me in the special thanks! Everyone ought to go out and DL this one immediately!
  18. I have done some quick pimpage. The blog, of course. And since "Deliverance of the Heart" is on there, enjoy a spot on VGMdb! Good luck getting the material out there for the listeners, Jill. I'll do what I can!
  19. Ouch. Too bad, Cap. Not really as big a deal as it's been made out to be by some; after all, they did own the artwork that was used anyway. But I definitely had to laugh once I saw that watermark though. Being a detail-oriented person, I can only wonder how that got into the final product.
  20. Hahahaha! Return of the birthday thread! Happy birthday, McVaffe! Also, McVaffe <3
  21. Well shit fellas, it's been a long while, hadn't it? ROFL sup dudes It's Kevin "Lorenzo" Sisk, aka debeerguy007 I've decided to finally to make another remix submission to OverClocked Remix. This time it shall be in the form of a Zelda II Remix entitled "The Eleven Day Journey" Some of you may remember that this mix was originally part of the 1st ever FLMC competition, in which this very mix tied 4th with OCR's own Mythril Nazgul. The original version took 11 days to put together, thus the source reason of the title. Since it's initial incarnation, some work has been done but mostly in it's overall mastering and in filling out a few places with a bit more instrumentation, now that the limitation of using strictly FL defaults was no longer an issue. The original mix clocked in at 6 mins and 15 secs whereas this version is a leaner 5 mins and 47 secs. I have to actually thank Pixietricks and DrumUltima for this as they made the suggestions a long while ago to play with taking out a few bars here and there. My only reservation about submitting this mix is that, from a judge's perspective, the only real thing it has going for it is it's arrangement and style, not necessarily the instrumentation choices or the choice of samples. I mean, we are talking mostly default FL stuff for the most part here, and they are pretty, um, unforgiving for the most part. While I could've just gutted the mix and replaced all the samples with better ones, they at the same were what gave the mix its spirit so to speak, and I just didn't have the heart to even try it. Now about the mix itself: I am a huge fan of Disco Dan's "Triforce Majeure", and I really wanted to make a mix that was in the same spirit, if not in the caliber. I tried to expand on the material in places with new pieces of melody that weave the original music's motifs(rhythms mostly) in an attempt to break up the repetition that is commonly found in classic NES music. I'd be lying though if in the 2nd half of the mix, that Mazedude's unique style didn't have some effect on me. The man is the master of wobbly chip tones. HEHE. I wanted the mix to be a narrative of sorts, with Link just starting out on his adventure, traveling long perilous roads and such, then arriving at his destination(wherever it may be) in which his goes in, battles monsters and dodging huge obstacles, then emerging victoriously in the end with whatever treasure(s) he was fortunate to acquire. You know, that hero kinda stuff. ROFL I find myself at an interesting time in my life. As I type this, I'm approaching my 25th birthday and I can't help but to think about how much I've changed since we last met with my Terminator 2 remix. I've lost weight, I've had three jobs, and I've become a more outgoing person in my personal life. I can honestly say I'm a much happier man for it. And if that wasn't enough, I've managed to land a gig of a lifetime. I am fortunate enough to be participating in the highly anticipated free 3rd party HalfLife 2 modification "Black Mesa" (www.blackmesasource.com) in which I am a voice actor and the assistant dialog editor on. No matter where my life takes me from here, I just want you guys to know that that OverClocked Remix has been like a 2nd family to me, and in ways has helped to shape the man I've become. Whether it's OCR or Black Mesa, the love and appreciation for the things that make all these games what they are have been a fundamental drive in my passion for them, and for that, I thank you for nourishing it.
  22. Yo, remix: Final Fantasy VI - Opera Battle Madness original(s): Opera Scene: "Overture(2)," followed by "overture" finishing with "battle theme" This is an amalgamation of some portions of the famous opera scene in FFVI finishing off with a small bit of the battle theme. Went for a really messy, sorta hard indie kinda feel. Lol... I don't really know how to describe the genre of this. There is ska, reggae and some hard aspects to it. But I like it. I had a lot of fun with it. Enjoy! Thanks for listening, -marc http://marcjunker.whenshuttersclick.com ---------------------------------------------------------------- http://snesmusic.org/v2/download.php?spcNow=ff6 - "Overture (part 3)" [ff6-207c.spc] (:00 section & 1:19 section of source) & "Battle Theme" (ff6-105.spc) The concept was cool, but the execution was really rough and not cohesive enough. The transition between the first and second halves didn't have much flow to it. The lead guitar sounded decent but the tone always sounded the same and the timing on it (and the bass) was a little loose. The backing instrumentation didn't adequately fill out the rest of the space in the soundfield. The sequenced drumwork for the first section in particular was generally droning and repetitive. NO
  23. Yeah, there ended up being a lot of back and forth between myself and Chris trying to obtain the source files! The first time I got them from him, I uploaded his WAV to the judges FTP, but I'm sure my shitty connection messed it up, because after uploading a clean WAV, the uploaded version that BGC mastered ended up having 2 really bad clicks/pops, so we couldn't post it after he had worked on it. After letting Chris know the situation, and him having no problems, he hoped to instead give us the song broken down into 3 layers (strings, brass and percussion) so that mastering it could be done more easily. Chris kind of dropped off the face of the earth after that, so I'd periodically mail him or PM him with "where da files? :'-(" But he was laid back and wasn't in any rush, so once he got those files to me months later, zircon was able to master it and this was finally ready! H00-ray!

Drums are midi, sequenced in Reaper and run through a vsti software called Addictive drums. Everything recorded and mixed in Reaper. Loved the game as a kid, so that's pretty much the 'inspiration'. ---------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.zophar.net/nsf/zelda.zip - A bunch of 'em Overall, a pretty solid sound, Warren, which is why this made it here to the panel. But this doesn't make it to the site, because 1) it's under 2 minutes and not a developed concept, 2) the arrangement of the themes isn't particularly interpretive or personalized, and 3) it's got medley-itis, i.e.: From a production standpoint, you sound like you're already pretty capable. This had solid harmonizations, good mixing/sound balance, and a beefy soundscape. So there's no hate here. You should be creating stuff for the monthly Dwelling of Duels compos if you're not already. I'd love to hear what you were capable of with 3 to 4 minutes and a more focused, more developed, more interpretive arrangement. I'm definitely hoping we hear from you again in the future. NO
