*NO* Return All Robots! 'Trial by Fire'
DragonAvenger replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
I can't help but echo what Andrew has already said. You've got plenty of arrangement here, but knowing who this is coming from, I was just expecting more. I dunno if it was the time limit or whatever, but I KNOW you can pull more out of this. I'd like to hear some more dynamic contrasts (especially out of the swells that you use so often, such a great opportunity there!), and you could pull some more out of the drums overall. Along with that, anything that you could do to spice this up would help add more life to it. Justin, I need more! NO (resubmit) -
*NO* Kirby 64 'The Last Dead Angel'
DragonAvenger replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Lots of really good things going on here. Very epic feel on this, definitely expanded from the original, and the drumwork is super solid. I cannot, however, forgive the strings. The attack sounds almost out of time, especially when it does anything faster than half notes. It needs to be fixed before I can consider this a pass. I'd like it to be overall less mechanical, as well, look into humanizing it, as well as the piano. Awesome track, but needs those fixes, please! NO (resubmit) -
Andrew's pretty much nailed this in a way I couldn't explain. You've brought the source very comfortably into the metal genre, and while it's close to the source, there is some expansion and flair that makes it unique. I'd like a tad more bass presence to give this a more solid bass, but right now the production is what is really holding it back, especially the bleed between things that is making it overall messy. Clean it up, and I think it's there. NO (resubmit)

I'm hoping it's not my speakers/headphones, but I'm hearing a lot of static in the intro. Can someone confirm? This was not something I would have expected to hear from this source, and it was really cool to listen to. The overall treatment of the source is unique, although I feel at times the source itself gets marginalized behind all the other stuff going on. I'd like it to be brought up to be just a tad more prominent at times. Also, as Jesse said, overall this either runs a little short, or could be a little more focused to really make this effective. The ending isn't really doing it for me either; it's very sudden. As Jesse mentioned, there are a lot of mechanical instruments, namely the piano in the beginning, but it really works for the track, and I have no problem with them. Once things get going, I feel like the balance is off here and there where more background parts are getting too much focus. A balance adjustment would help this out. Unique take on this theme, I'd like to see it fixed up. NO (please resubmit)

Brandon Strader www.bstrader.net forum: 3123 MMX Project track game: Mega Man X souce: Sting Chameleon remix: String Chamellotron http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfH9QAGi0sk Took the source and made it acoustic, toned it down a bit maybe, made it more dramatic. This version I'm submitting is the one I mastered, not the album version. My WAV hasn't been mastered yet for the project but I assume the album is out now (im writing this on November 29th) so yeah, go check that out. The inspiration for this song was mainly the mellotrons. I acquired and used GForce M-Tron quite heavily on this song. Mellotron vibes, flute, strings.. even mellotron fuzz guitar and ebow sounds. This may be a grey area on the panel concerning sample quality, but come on. Mellotrons are the best sounds ever, there's a type of nostalgia and legitimacy you get by using these sounds. It brings a tear to my eye. I love good mellotron sounds so much. Ah yeah the rest, some stormdrum, acoustic guitar and electric bass, some electric guitar... Superior 2 drums.. I even used the acoustic guitar as a drum at the end. I spent almost a year on this song, sweat and blood. I hope you like it. I claimed this song because it was one that hadn't been claimed yet on the MMX project. I like making band-oriented songs that sound real, performed by humans... think as if you are listening to this in the 60s. -------------- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfH9QAGi0sk

*NO* Sonic Colors 'Reach for the Stars (Dance Mix)'

Contact Information Your ReMixer name: fabiosilva Your real name: Fábio Silva Your email address: aragao.silva@gmail.com Your website: Your userid: 40151 Submission Information Name of game(s) arranged: Sonic Colors Name of individual song(s) arranged: Reach For The Stars (Dance Remix) Additional information about game including composer, system, etc. (if it has not yet been added to the site) Link to the original soundtrack (if it is not one of the sound archives already available on the site) Your own comments about the mix, for example the inspiration behind it, how it was made, etc.: This is my dance remix for 'Reach For The Stars' from Sonic Colors. This remix was made using Acid Pro 7 and Reason 5. I heard this song while playing the game this weekend and really liked it's melody, but didn't like the punk-rock arrangement that much. I'm not a big fan of punk-rock myself and I'm also pretty much into old school sonic music, so I guess I like sonic better with a pop/dancing beat and lots of synths on it. This is why I decided to remix the song and give it more of what I'd imagined for a sonic colors song. I wanted to add vocals to the song, but couldn't find an acapella version, cannot sing myself and all my tries to isolate the vocals of the original song failed miserably, so this is an instrumental-only version. Hopefully somebody will make an acapella version of the song available and I will be more than happy to add it to the mix. Anyway, I hope you guys like it! Regards from Brazil. ReMixer Name: TheGuitahHeroe (or just TGH) Remix Name: "To the Hill of the Ancients" Game: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team Song arranged: "Great Canyon" Here's an ambient, chippy, electronic, upbeat remix of one of the best songs from the PMD series. I feel like I hit a breakthough with this one, as it's my first remix created entirely using FL Studio (yeah, so-long Mixcraft XD). Every instrument was found free on the internet, mostly from Free Sound Vault. I used FL Studio 9. Even if this remix doesn't get past, I would like to take the opportunity to thank the people at the WIP forums: Emunator, and especially Rozovian, who was the one who really inspired me to get on the remixing scene (if you could call it that). Rozo (I call him "The Doc," lol) has helped me immensely with all of my WIPs, and has taught me a lot about music, and for this I owe him much gratitude. Ectogemia also provided useful feedback on the forum, thanks to Ecto as well. Well, here's the remix: And the source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zk_yTNr8cyU There's not really much else to say, other than I hope you guys enjoy ---------------------- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ty1fEqzQ2U

halc (13226) Drew Wheeler Brandon Strader (3123) 'The Last Schala Mix Ever' Chrono Trigger Source: Schala Brandon's comments: I was sittin' around wasting time as usual, and suddenly I had the idea to make a Schala mix... yeah yeah, I know... Everyone gets one, that's my motto. Keep an ear out for my Terra and Ice Cap in the near future. What actually inspired this was that I really enjoyed and fell in love with the clean tones that my 7-string made. I used some different pickups to record each part. There's the one melody that goes throughout the whole source played completely with harmonics, the lead parts, and some nice rhythm parts. The harmonizing chords are my favorite. I made a 4:30 or so long mp3 pretty quick, and decided to send it to halc to see if he wanted to do anything with it... he can tell the rest of the story! halc's comments: Brandon asked me to help him out with a mix pretty similar in style and structure to our previous NiGHTS mix. I whipped up all of the electronic elements and some of the percussion, and also mixed the track. Brandon always has lots of creative ideas in his arrangements and so I quite enjoy expanding on his work. Please enjoy this Schala mix. ------------------------

ReMix: Premonitions This remix is for the Wild Arms project please do not post until the project is released. ReMix linkage: Comments: The main focus of this mix was to combine elements of electronica and dark movie scores. Think Ghost in the Shell and Akira soundtracks. Since the source is so simple it was a lot of fun to fill in the blank spots with everything else. I chose numerous psycho acoustic soundsources from Omnisphere to help colour the track. In order to bring a since of familiarity to listeners I included sustained strings and lots of layered ethnic vocals. Thanks for listening! ------------------------ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQ3HpoOBaRI

Remix title: Canopy Crawl Remix mirror: http://tindeck.com/listen/wfms Contact Information ReMixer name: evory, gintokipianist Real name: Jeremy Ng, Tom Egan Email: jeremyngyd@hotmail.com, gintokipianist@hotmail.co.uk User ID: 31417, 41307 Submission Information Game arranged: Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! Song arranged: Jungle Jitters Source: [GBA] and a little bit of [sNES] Additional information Tom: This piece seemed to me to be a study on different genres/musical styles with this in mind frequent tempo and dynamic changes are were used to animate the piece. Jeremy: Well I guess that's a nice way of saying it's sorely schizophrenic. Anyway, I orginally set out to write a Baroque piece, but gave up after the first 4 measures or so. I left them in there anyway, and the nature of the source turned the mix into something vaguely sounding like jazz (to me at least, I've hardly listened to, let alone played, jazz music other than piano exam pieces my teacher forced upon me). Tom then somehow managed to perform the piece in the space of two days or so (and amazingly so), and made a few improvements to it along the way as well. And so this materialised. -------------- !

How did you come up with your artist name?
DragonAvenger replied to adambomb337's topic in General Discussion
Too much DragonLance. Wanted Dragon-something, and a friend of mine came up with Avenger. Just kinda stuck. -
Home safe and sound from MAG. Definitely sad it is over, but definitely also very tired. Hoping I don't catch the MAGFlu, although it seems somewhat likely at this point. I had a fantastic time, though, and was really glad I got to go to for my first time this year. Plenty of highlights, too many to remember at this time, but I will say that my unofficial 'marriage' to DJP in the elevator by a drunk chick might be near the top as most memorable.

Happy Birthday!

When does the schedule usually come out for Magfest? Is it like last minute, or (hopefully) earlier?

Right around 575.

I am pretty disappointed that the final pictures couldn't be posted. But, alas.

OCR02252 - *YES* Final Fantasy Legend 2 'Heroes' *RESUB*
DragonAvenger replied to OceansAndrew's topic in Judges Decisions
Lots of good things going on here. The arrangement is very recognizable as the source, but definitely with your own take to it. The drums and bass add that attitude you mentioned, and the rest stays in that more expansive (but lo-fi)orchestral setting. Not a set of sounds I would have expected to work as well as it does, so I was pleasantly surprised at that. Things get just a tad repetitive feeling towards the end, but it's not that big of an issue. As I mentioned above, the sounds were kind of surprising, but enjoyable to listen to. Balance is good, and as far as I can tell the drums sound fine compared to the track (which was one of the issues brought up in the previous judgement. Sounds good, YES -
Super Dodge Ball: Around the World - History
DragonAvenger replied to Murmeli Walan's topic in Projects
You'd have to ask Dave or Larry or maybe Vinnie to clarify for sure, but I think the gist of it is that videogame versions are essentially arranging the folk song, and therefore are not original tracks of their own. Because of that, it's more like the artist is arranging the folk song rather than a videogame track. -
Super Dodge Ball: Around the World - History
DragonAvenger replied to Murmeli Walan's topic in Projects
Because the source itself is based a lot on a folk song it kind of removes it from being a 'videogame' song per se. The only song that is allowed (and probably ever will be) is from Tetris because it is so much more widely known as 'The song from Tetris'. That help clarify? -
I like some of the arrangement ideas you have here. You've got a good start on things, although overall it feels a little too basic. I'd like you to take what you've got and experiment with it further. Things like the chords, which are kind of blocky, could be spiced up a little. The arrangement itself also get's a little repetitive towards the end, and it would be nice to get some more arrangement of the source, or maybe an original section to help keep things varied. The one huge (gotta be honest here) thing is that this is really really mechanical sounding. You really need to humanize this. What is compounding the issue, too, is that at times the arrangement is somewhat simple, which is making the mechanicalness stand out that much more. Another point is the samples, which are somewhat generic synths. They aren't horrible by any means, but they stay pretty static throughout and don't evolve very much. Some change-ups would help. There are arrangement ideas here, but this really needs work. Please use our WIP forums to get some more feedback to improve. NO

*NO* Super Dodge Ball 'Dodge This Sakura'

I was hoping it wouldn't come to this, but Vinnie is right. The track is awesome, and will be a great contribution to the project, but it can't be on OCR. NO OVERRIDE -
*NO* Final Fantasy 8 'In Shadows - Theme of Edea'
DragonAvenger replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Neat take on these sources. Doing a nearly a cappella track is not easy, and there are a lot of good things going on here. Firstly, intonation is pretty good throughout, which is quite important when all the tracks are as exposed as this. Secondly, the countermelody-like additions niche very nicely around the theme, and the harmonies are also subtle but well used. I wish the words had been provided, but what I can make out (I am notoriously bad at being able to make out lyrics) work well. The instrumental parts aren't cutting it for me. The bass notes are very mechanical, thin, and very short which sounds awkward compared to the rest of the track. I'd like to hear the bass beefed up a little to really solidify the lower end (within reason of not overpowering the vocals, of course). Along with that, the percussion sounds a very tinny. Also, the vocals and instrumentals aren't exactly lining up all the time. Overall the texture is very sparse, which I do think works for this track, but there needs to be a little more added to this to give it a more solid ground to stand on. Nice to see you from youtube, I've liked your works for a while now, and I hope you relook at this one! NO (please resubmit)
