I love me some DKC2(probably moreso than Metroid), but from what I've seen(unscientific), Super Metroid seems to have been the bigger favorite among gamers.
-
And yet which game had more staying power years later? I think Metroid Other M is gonna do just fine.

I think that most 3D fighters have the impenetrable barrier that is being in the third dimension. Whereas games like Street Fighter IV have been able to simplify things to an extent(less worrying about pulling off a move and more strategy), games like Tekken, Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter, and even DOA have an extra layer of complexity, since you now have different buttons for guarding, and can side-step/8-way run/counter, and all sorts of things you don't generally see in 2D fighters. Due to this, it's hard to create that mainstream appeal and awareness. I have friends who on occasion will play some Super Street Fighter IV and even the horrendously unbalanced Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, but won't go near Dead or Alive 4 or Soul Calibur IV solely on the grounds that they don't do 3D fighters. I have other friends who have a hard enough time pulling off Hitomi's first chain combo in DOA4(granted this guy has the reflexes of an autistic monkey on marijuana). Then of course as I mentioned before, there's no real long terms support. Harada could really learn something from Ono and take a larger interest in extending the community life span and relevance of the games he makes. To me, that's one thing that Capcom's done all across the board that really sets them apart from a lot of other game companies. That being said, I joined the group about a week ago and would totally be down for a Soul Calibur V, which would hopefully fix the following: 1) Character creation. Either make this a robust feature or eliminate it all together. Personally, I'd prefer the latter. It's bad enough that I have to see all the "xXxNarutoxXx"s when I'm on Xbox Live without having to see half assed plagiarisms of random characters. This honestly takes me out of the experience big time. Make something creative or GTFO. 2) Character balancing/broken characters. It can be said that Kilik is pretty much SC's version of Ken, and this is mostly true; except the part where he can spam one or two moves and win the match(of course this is mostly related to my next point). When a game has so many broken characters that are banned in tourneys, you know something's wrong. Obviously in a weapons-based fighter, certain characters are gonna have different playstyles/advantages, but a bit more balancing would still be appreciated. 3) Netcode. This is what killed Soul Calibur IV for me and I'm sure many others. It's a bit strange that up until Super Street Fighter IV in 2010, it seems to me that the fighter to do the best job of integrating (semi) decent netcode with a great lobby system in my opinion was DOA4 released back in 2006. And trust me, when you start seeing stickied threads with strategies revolving around lag play, there's something very wrong. It's also the case for a lot of people(including myself) that either don't have fighting game fans as friends or aren't near a scene to have a decent lobby system and netcode for the game. SCIV had neither of these. I guess smaller complaints would be related to the single player modes which felt pretty bland and the plot, which probably isn't supposed to be the main focus of the game, was just too WTF for my tastes. TL;DR: I want SCV with a lot of things fixed.

Hey man if anything, the Soul Calibur "community" needs something like SRK. They need more awareness, they need their own Seth Killian, Daigo, Justin Wong, and more prominence in EVO. In fact, the same could probably be said about all Namco fighters(Tekken, Soul Calibur), since it seems that they just put them out there and then leave it at that. I don't think I've ever seen a community like Street Fighter's for any other fighting game. They also need less broken games/Star Wars characters.

PS3 hacked via USB dongle modchip
Malaki-LEGEND.sys replied to prophetik music's topic in General Discussion
If it can be done, it can be undone. Don't know why companies don't get this. Not to hammer on Sony specifically(this can be said about anyone really), but if you create a device that can do so much and then arbitrarily cripple that functionality, this is the least you can expect. Next on the list, 3DS. -
So yeah, I should be on sometime later tonight after around 10:15 if anyone wants to get some games in.

It's not that it's hard to block. That stuff's easy to punish. I'm just sick of seeing the same thing over and over again. I feel like I'm fighting Ken with a different kind of shoryuken.

Every time a Chun Li is beaten, an angel gets its wings. Fuck Chun Li. "Oh hey guys! Ima just do this cross up over and over and poke you to death!" Her lameness is only outclassed by Balrog. Coincidentally, every time I see or hear Laura Bailey, I want to punch her in the face now.

Tower of Heaven - Original Soundtrack

Gah! You beat me to the punch! I actually love this game and the music especially. The game itself is a nice platformer that gets trickier the farther you go, with a pretty nice ending. -
Castlevania: Harmony of Despair

So I've been playing this game all weekend. I have a pretty awesome group, and we're plowing through all the different maps and whorin' loot like nobody else' business. Also pro tip: If you're in a group, have the guy with the highest luck open all the chests(at least the purple and green ones). Better loot opportunity. -
Castlevania: Harmony of Despair

You mean every game past Symphony of The Knight wasn't pandering to the SoTN nostalgia? If they were trying to make a quick buck pandering to nostalgia, then don't you think they'd just make another standard Metroidvania game with pretty much recycled everything instead of making the risky move of implementing a whole new mechanic(multiplay, and boss rush in PoR and OoE don't count) and presenting it to a fanbase who go into a full nerd rage whenever their favorite game is "violated"? The 2D 'Vanias are near the end of their life-span, and if Lords of Shadow succeeds, then that would have most likely been the final nail in the coffin for the sidescrollers. The most likely scenario is that Igurashi says to himself "maybe I should try to shake things up a bit" and bam, a Castlevania with full multiplayer throughout. Sure it's missing a lot the trimmings that "fans" are expecting like a story(and give me a break, what Castlevania game can't be described by "Dracula's back, go kill him"?) and it certainly isn't perfect, but as a proof of concept it works pretty well. If this game does well enough, and judging by all the random people I keep running into I'm assuming it will, then maybe we'll get an all new epic 'Vania with different new characters, game system, multiplayer, the works... -
Castlevania: Harmony of Despair

You can, it just takes a shitload more hits and chances are you aren't gonna make it anyway. Seriously, I was with a full party of 6 earlier today, and my Charlotte was the only one left alive once we finally killed the sucker. >.> -
Castlevania: Harmony of Despair

Seeing Julius and Maria in the game is going to be interesting, although I'm not entirely sure what abilities they'd give J since Jonathan already has sub-weapons and martial arts. I suppose they could give him Simon's ability to swing from objects with his whip and a different set of martial arts, but other than that I can't see much of anything... Maybe holy magic as opposed to Alucard's dark magic. Maria would probably have the use of animals if anything. The new pyramid level looks pretty sweet from the image I saw earlierm although more than anything, I'd like them to add new glyphs for Shanoa, more balancing, loot, and a BETTER INSTRUCTION MANUAL! Edit - Julius can swing from Shanoa's Magnus Glyph spheres with his whip. -

Castlevania: Harmony of Despair

Holy god... I've been on this thing all day and FINALLY managed to kill Dracula with my team of hunters. I really need to gain more of Charlotte's spells and Jonathan's sub weapons. Well worth the cash I say. -
Castlevania: Harmony of Despair

OK more solid impressions. Sorry for the lackluster reply earlier. I had just gotten home from class and was ready to crash for the night. I have yet to do any multiplayer just yet, as I'm still figuring out the ins and outs of each character, although it's plainly obvious that the game was designed to be played with others. This is especially evident in the "Lost Vikings-esque" style of helping other characters get through different sections of the castle by flipping switches and levers scattered throughout, and the boss fights, which can be pretty tough if you aren't aware of their patterns. While the game is catered to the multiplayer experience, don't assume that you can't have some fun hunting solo, as I can tell you from my experience that it's pretty fun in its own right... Just be ready to die much more often. Now let's talk turkey, er... pot roast. There are five(thus far) playable characters with their own abilities from the games(as I mentioned before). Soma has his soul system in which you can acquire enemy souls after defeating them, which confer different abilities from throwing bones, axes, to stat boosts, to transforming into stuff. Jonathan has the signature Vampire Killer which can be spun around in 8 directions a la Simon in CV4, as well as the ability to equip different subweapons like crosses, daggers(hell I even found a paper airplane) that will all gain stat boosts the more you use them. He also apparently has different martial arts abilities which I have yet to see just yet. Charlotte has become pretty interesting: she is now effectively a blue mage that can absorb and thus equip different enemy spells such as raging fire and ice needle from PoR. Alucard is relatively versatile, as he can equip many different weapons and has access to dark magic spells like hell fire and such, while Shanoa has the use of her glyph system from OoE. While there are 6(thus far) different maps that are essentially ripped and combined from previous games, they're all still really fun to go through, and when you take into account that different abilities and equipment can be gained from the same enemies by using different characters(Alucard might get an Axe Armor Shield from an Axe Armor, while Jonathan might get an Axe subweapon), you get a lot of variety. The graphics themselves are upscaled to HD, and spell effects are very nice looking. The audio is remixed stuff from previous games in different styles(usually metal), and as a bonus, you can mix and match what music you'd like to hear going through different maps and boss battles. There is no experience system, but rather you'll be engaging in a lot of loot whoring to increase your stats and elemental boosts(of course Jonathan and Soma get extra stat bonuses through their own abilities). Best part is that even if you die you are able to keep all the gold, gear, and items you found up until your death, so when in doubt, you can always hit the shop to buy better gear. As soon as I get a feel for the different maps(using the zoom out function is a godsend for tracking and planning your route to the target), I'll probably jump online for some multiplayer impressions. Several things that are added are the abilities to revive dead team members(which wander around as skeletons that can do minimal damage until revived), and the Dual Crush ability from Portrait of Ruin. If any of you guys decide to grab the game, hit me up on Live and we'll definitely play. More to come later. -
Castlevania: Harmony of Despair
Malaki-LEGEND.sys replied to Malaki-LEGEND.sys's topic in General Discussion
So I just bought it not 15 minutes ago, and holy crap I love it. -
So for those of you who don't know, Castlevania: Harmony of Despair is a new co-op Castlevania game that was released today on XBLA as part of Microsoft's "Summer of Arcade" program. The game is essentially a mish mash of older, slightly HD-upscaled maps in which you traipse around trying to kill the target objective(a boss) located at a certain area of the castle map(of which there are currently 6 with more to be added via DLC later). You can play with up to 5 other friends through Xbox Live in either survival or co-op modes and can pick between 5 characters from Symphony of The Night and the GBA/DS games: Alucard, Johnathan Morris, Charlotte Aulin, Soma Cruz, and Shanoa, each of which retains all their abilities from their respective games, with more characters added as DLC later as well. So anyone thinking of grabbing this or has it already? Also, for PSN users, don't worry. I'm sure that if anything, it's just a timed exclusive which Konami is also using to test the waters.

I'm not entirely sure why I stopped playing Blazblue after a few months. Might have something to do with how ridiculous V-12 and Hakumen were. I NEED Continuum Shift though.

Phoned-in game endings [SPOILERS ABOUND]

Why anyone would talk shit about Link's Awakening is beyond my comprehension. -
It's a sad thing to see this thread so far down... Anyway, J Hawk and I just got some matches on. Anyone wanna get in on this some time this week or whenever?
-
That's totally fine with me. We're having a serious fighting renaissance right now as it is without two more games next year. I don't know how much more of a beating my wallet can take. After actually being able to watch the gameplay trailer at 1up(vids were down), I shall now proceed to eat my own words, as I thought the juggling and tagging mixed with the SFIV visual style and speed worked pretty nicely IMO. This might actually be my favorite Tekken game if it pans out well ironically.
-
Why just Street Fighter Vs Tekken? Why not a Capcom Vs. Namco? Can't say I care much about the Tekken series, so I guess I'll be sitting these out.
-
It's something that's been heavily rumored for the past few days: A Capcom Vs Namco and a Namco Vs Capcom fighter where the former is a 2D fighter using the Street Fighter IV engine and the latter being a 3D fighter using the Tekken 6 engine. This whole rumor thing started during EVO when Ono was onstage with Harada(producer of Tekken). Whatever the secret project Ono is working on is, whether this rumor is true, we'll find out later today.
