Fighting Games On and Offline
Malaki-LEGEND.sys replied to ShadowBlade's topic in General Discussion
"Scrubs" or anyone that "cheeses" or whatever serve the purpose of plugging up any small holes in your game so that you play better and thus feel better about your playing. It's also funny how taunting has gotten to me in the past. Amazing that. -
Fighting Games On and Offline
Malaki-LEGEND.sys replied to ShadowBlade's topic in General Discussion
Well the OP mentioned playing Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 online, and that's probably his biggest mistake. But seriously, online play is pretty much the only resource I have for playing against human opponents in fighters just because the friends I have here are either non-gamers, casual gamers, or bro gamers who would never deign to touch anything other than CoD. Whenever I do get a chance to play with friends here, it's like 1 or 2 matches tops. It's funny though whenever I see people on different forums going on and on about hate mail. I must be doing something wrong 'cause I never get any. My best recourse for playing ANY sort of casual matches with a group of people is also with the OCR crew. I'd kill to be able to grab a RL buddy who's as into them as I am. I think my douche friends just don't like losing. -
New Soul Calibur OFFICIAL!
Malaki-LEGEND.sys replied to DiGi Valentine's topic in General Discussion
I think the best praise I can give Soul Calibur IV is that it had awesome music. Apart from that, broken combat, crap storytelling, less than spectacular character creation, disgraceful online component(when people start building strategies to take advantage of lag, you know there's something wrong), and a general dearth of interesting modes/content. Funny however that I really couldn't care less about any of the character's proportions. It's a video game. Leave your coat, hat, and realism at the door please. Also for god's sake, no more series-crossover characters. This isn't Soul Calibur Vs. Star Wars/LoTR/LoZ/whatever the fuck. Sucks 'cause as I've mentioned to several of you guys over Live, I really wanted to like and get back into SCIV, but I can never bring myself to fire it up. -
AHHH!! New Soul Calibur! Also Merry Christmas all!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh -
The beginning of the second disc on the Xbox 360 version is Chapter 10. Also, the worst kept secret of every JRPG(and any other RPG other than Hack and NetHack) is that they're ALL linear with varying degrees. As long as there are specific "choke points" that you have to get across in order to proceed, the game is linear. Final Fantasy XIII just decides to cut out the middleman and be upfront about being a straight line.

Don't worry about that. Daigo's new candy is Yun, so expect "Super Street Fighter IV: Yun Edition" once the DLC hits.

Castlevania: Harmony of Despair
Malaki-LEGEND.sys replied to Malaki-LEGEND.sys's topic in General Discussion
I'm down for some playtime(you know, we need to get back to SSFIV). I downloaded all the DLC, although I'm a bit disappointed with most of the new characters. They don't really add much to the mix, but whatever, I still like 'em. -
Back in my day, we had 2 white platforms on either side of the screen and a ball floating in between them and WE LIKED IT! None of this artsy-fartsy 3D(isn't that a kind of dorito?) crap! Super Mario? Only Mario I ever knew worked at the cleaners and there was nothin' super about him! But on a serious note, there's obviously a disconnect between generations. Most of us above the age of 22 grew up during the "glory days" of gaming where there were plenty of rotten lemons, but innovation was king. This had to be the case simply because presentation outside of a Squaresoft RPG was at a point where the only way you could differentiate your game was by creating gameplay mechanics unique to it. War has changed. Now that orchestral scores and huge budgets worthy of summer blockbusters, you have an environment in which you can pretty much create a similar game, but with subtle to large differences in presentation. I think saying that gameplay takes a backseat is a bit unfair to a lot of games, but it's true that there's a lot of repetitive and derivative stuff being released lately. With the recent prominence of so many genres and platforms however, you don't have to worry about "samey" games anyway. I think that classic games that have proven themselves to be fun through the passing of time(like Super Mario Bros. 3) will always have a place for anyone who enjoys anything outside of the dudebro set of games. If kids aren't appreciating older games, it's simply because there's a huge catalog of gaming now compared to before, and if something doesn't grab 'em, then there'll be something else waiting right around the corner. Not only that, but keep in mind that so many of the games that were amazing during our days as kids and teens are no longer in print, harder to find, or simply just aren't in the collective conscious anymore. Introduce a kid to earlier Mario, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, etc. See how they respond. You might find that they'll crave more of the same. Also get over it, Toadofsky. Metroid Other M was a good game. Would you rather Metroid and gaming as a whole stay in a little bubble where it'll only be left to stagnate in a corner?

I feel I should point out that Eternal Sonata was developed by Tri-Crescendo, who also developed Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of The Moon for the Wii and not Tri-Ace. There could have been some staff crossover at one point, but it was developed by the former. Motoi Sakuraba DID compose the soundtrack for it though, which to his credit, along with his work on Infinite Undiscovery it's the best he's done this generation IMO. It seems he only pulls the generic card whenever he's working on the Star Ocean or Tales series, which can be pretty hit or miss. Kohei Tanaka adds most of the flair to Resonance of Fate's OST, while fortunately Sakuraba was relegated to just the battle tracks which turned out well enough, save for the goddamned synth organ he always uses. Resonance of Fate is pretty sweet though. I could probably spend about lengthy periods of time just trying out new outfits for my characters. My biggest problem with the battle system however would be that it's basically a "what you get is what you got" scenario. Characters can learn different skills here and there, but there's never any addition or twists to the mechanics other than using hexes and power stations outside of battle to influence loot drops and such. I love the plot of the game especially, as it has a very Trigun/Gungrave feel to it with a bunch of twists, turns, and bloody pasts all the while having a personal, family-like bond between the three leads as they come to terms with all the events that would bring them to where they are now. There are a few inconsistencies here and there(like Leanne's reaction to Zephyr's past midway through), but overall it's nice. Did I mention Leanne? She's got spunk. Love her I do. It's too bad SEGA had the idiot business sense to release this the very week AFTER Final Fantasy XIII hit, or it might have gotten some more attention. As it stands I STILL have to go back to finish those last 3 or 4 chapters I was missing.

A Realm Reborn: Final Fantasy XIV Online
Malaki-LEGEND.sys replied to Malaki-LEGEND.sys's topic in General Discussion
Regarding this statement, I can't help but think that it's because the JRPG genre has been seeping into the otaku culture for a long while now, and we all know how that goes. Back on the subject of FFXIV, well goddamnit. It's pretty much impossible for me to give SE the benefit of the doubt anymore. As much as I enjoy the core ideas of what's there, they botched it. I'm still playing on and off, which I probably wouldn't were it not for the "indefinite" free trail extension. The series has thrived off introducing new blood in the past with stuff like FFVI and FFVII, so maybe it's just time for Tanaka to go the way of Sakaguchi and leave things be. Hopefully things will pick up. While I'm not sure I'm totally cool with the transparency of their business practices, it seems like SE is definitely trying to salvage it. Now someone fire Wada. -
Except that Metroid Other M is still very much playable. So I just got through playing the demo for both Sonic 4 and Sonic Adventure. I can clearly see why the fans don't like Sonic 4, even though I thought it has some cool stuff going for it. Sonic's animations just look wrong. They don't look fluid at all, and that isn't even mentioning the game physics. Jumping and trying to actually run is pretty terrible. There's a reason why Mario games are pretty much heralded as awesome: They control well. Trying to make Sonic run or jump feels like trying to lift an anvil off the ground with one hand. Doesn't feel good in the least. The game really does look and feel like a game that was thrown together using flash. Wasn't this game announced a year ago? What happened to all that time to develop? That being said, the level design is alright and I like the homing attack addition to it, but that's more about just being derivative and not really adding much else. As for Sonic Adventure? Go choke on a log and die, Sonic Team. Sorry, that was harsh, but holy crap is this game the antithesis of fun to me. I know I'm dealing with the Dreamcast(which kept on following the Sega tradition of shitty, blocky looking 3D), but it's just so damned painful. Environments feel stale, sound is crap, Sonic controls like a drunken teenager drives, and it's just unfun. Jesus Christ now I know the pain of a Sonic fan.

I just shaved. I don't have the Burt anymore or that classy Quinto gruff. If you look back far enough you'll find one in the Post Pictures thread in off-topic.

Zachary Quinto. ...Or Burt Reynolds.

I must be off my rocker, but the first thing I thought when I read this wasn't "ROFLPWNT Sonic games lol", but was actually "so this is how Sega is dealing with financial downturn and beginning their move into a more digitally-focused direction." I wouldn't be surprised if they start taking other games like Yakuza games and Alpha Protocol(which did shit here) off retail shelves. Speaking of which, I heard the PC version of Alpha Protocol wasn't as bug ridden as the console versions. Is it worth the plunge maybe?

For the price of a PS3 when it came out you could buy a low-midrange PC. People still bought a PS3. It's a matter of what value a person puts into something. I could easily say that to me a 300 dollar phone(which is what those things are supposed to be) is pretty expensive while a powerful 3D-enabled handheld is totally reasonable at 250 bucks and be totally justified in doing so.

Just grabbed it. Back into the world of PC gaming I go. I can already feel the huge difference in play. I don't wanna play with you guys just yet as I'll end up being a liability since I'm still getting used to keyboard and mouse again. Want to go through a few rounds myself then hope to saddle up. -

A Realm Reborn: Final Fantasy XIV Online
Malaki-LEGEND.sys replied to Malaki-LEGEND.sys's topic in General Discussion
I am freaking addicted to crafting in this game, and that alone should earn it a seal of approval since I've never been much for crafting in a game that isn't specifically based solely around it. I could also so the same thing about axe-wielding classes and yet here I am leveling and loving marauder. I've also noticed that positioning does actually matter in battle this time around as while I was in a party with a member keeping the hate, I was constantly getting nothing but critical/multiple hits when attacking from behind or the flank. While this game is pretty damned fun, it does have it's big flaws not unlike most MMOs at launch. For starters, there's a bunch of lag UI and battle lag, which is apparently the cause of battle regimens(the game's version of combo attacks) lack of functionality from what I can tell, and the game instruction manual is atrociously bad at explaining anything. The game site, The Lodestone is a bit more helpful(it has crafting recipes up), but not by too much. I don't think we're going to see very accurate reviews on the game until a few more months have passed however. The game was rushed and it shows, with SE already rushing to add in more content within the next week or so. But for what it's worth, the content that IS there(which is already a lot) is very, VERY fun.
