  1. Sorry bout that Old Man Time...I coulda sworn I got that. 5 more hours for entering the competition!
  2. At Fire in the Hole's suggestion, I have decided to not only extend the submission stage for this competition to the end of tomorrow (Tuesday), I have also included any submissions made since the contest began (save for the Eternal Legends chapter, unless GA wants it in the competition). So, GET CRACKIN! Also, if I have forgotten or left out anyone's entries, please let me know before tomorrow night!
  3. I don't understand what you're saying. Are you saying I should tell people right now that they have one day to finish their works? What happens then if they have been working on it for the entire time the contest has been off? Then they have an unfair advantage. Not to mention that when the thread was deleted there was just under a day and a half left in the competition. I am merely trying to handle an unfortunate situation in the most fair way possible. Please, instead of being indignant and angry, why don't you try helping me to understand where you are coming from?
  4. Well, Off-Topic is up and so is the new Writers' Thread. I changed the name just a bit on my own whim, because I didn't get much feedback. I also split the threads, because I didn't want to risk being in the wrong forum. The Writers' Thread is in OffTop, and The Writing Competition Thread is in the Competitions forum. We will be starting the Judging phase of our competition on Wednesday morning, so get ready! Oh, and mods can lock this thread now.
  5. Sorry. You can blame it on whoever deleted the thread. The problem is, I don't want to give an extra week and a half to whoever hadn't submitted a piece yet. I understand your pain, though; as a result of this whole mix-up, I don't have any pieces in the competition. If it makes you feel better, I'll try to host the Spring Competition earlier than usual.

  9. The Writing Competition Thread In conjunction with The Writers' Thread News This month's category: Short Story. Good luck everyone! Current Stage: VOTING Contest Dates: -->Submission: September 1 12:01am to October 6, 11:59pm -->Voting: October 7 12:01am to October 20, 11:59pm -->Results: October 21, 7:00pm General Info: The Writing Competition Thread holds bi-monthly competitions starting on the first day of every other month. There are three categories that our competitions fall under: Short story, poetry, and freeform. Each competition focuses on one of these categories. We aim to be a non-threatening competition, and to help our entrants improve their writing skills. If you are interested, please enter regardless of your skill level. We try to give feedback and helpful tips for entered works. Submission Rules: - Late submissions will not be judged. - Entries should reflect the category of the competition. If an entry is deemed to not fit into the correct category, it will be ignored. - Instead of submitting old material, you are encouraged to write something new. After all, we are writers, and we are up to a little challenge, right? - Only one entry per person is allowed. Subsequent entries will be ignored. - Finish your work before you post your submission. Edits of submissions after the judging phase begins will disqualify the submission. - Remember to include a title, or at least a handle for people to call your work during the judging phase. - Please post your piece directly into this thread! Otherwise, it may get overlooked. - If you would like your entry to be placed on the Writers’ Thread list, then submit a link with it as well. Category - Short Story: - No fanfiction. Fanfiction will belong in the Freeform category. Why? Because creating and developing your own characters in a limited amount of space is a significant challenge. Working with existing characters in existing universes is like remixed music; it's one thing to remix a song, but something completely different to make it from scratch. - Fiction and nonfiction are both welcome. - Please limit your submissions in this category to 2500 words. - Please label your work as fiction, non-fiction, hybrid, etc. This will help people understand and better judge your piece. Category - Poetry: - Poetry can be almost anything. You need not adhere to a particular form unless you wish to. Anything from sonnets to haikus to free-verse belongs here. - Please limit your submissions in this category to 1000 words. - Please label your work regarding the type of poetry it is. For example, ballad, villanelle, palindrome, limerick, free-verse, acrostic, etc. Category - Freeform: - If it has words, it belongs here. Examples could be Maddox-style rants, journalistic articles, How-to documents, or really whatever creative idea you can come up with. Hell, even ASCII art would probably find a home here. - Please limit your submissions in this category to 3000 words. - Label your work, if you think it will help. - I will kill you if you use an ASCII art generator to make a submission. Voting rules: - Early or late votes will not be accepted. - *NEW* Anyone who has submitted an entry in past competitions may vote, even if they are not current submitters. The purpose of this is to prevent one person from having their friends (or alt accounts) to win by flooding the vote, while maintaining a larger voter base than normal. - When voting, you will choose a 1st Place and a Runner-Up. - *NEW* Scoring: If the voter has submitted an entry this round, their vote for 1st Place will be worth 3 points, and for Runner-Up worth 2 points. If the voter has NOT submitted this round, their votes will be worth 2 points and 1 point. - Honorable Mentions can certainly be made, but will not add any points. - You may not vote for your own work - Voting in this competition automatically gives your entry an extra point! Determining the Winners: - After the deadline for voting has passed, I will tally the votes for each submission. The submission with the most will be declared the winner, and second place will be the runner-up. Winner and runner-up will both receive a custom signature badge so you can show off your achievement!
  10. Please no...don't make spelling mistakes in a grammar game. Also, apparently I suck at English. If only I could remember what all those words mean...
  11. According to an article I read yesterday (I'm too lazy to look it up), the same thing happened with VHS vs. Betamax. Sony wouldn't allow porn to be distributed on their format, and look where the format ended up... Of course, it could be coincidence, but I personally wouldn't bet on it. Edit: Jacked!
  12. If it's alright, I'd like to hold judging for the competition still, after this thread has moved to Off-Topic (unfortunately, I have no idea when this will be). Until then, please refrain from giving public reviews of the competition pieces. Also, if you submitted a piece in the deleted thread, you are allowed to resubmit. I am trusting you not to make changes now, to make it fair. I also changed the "Featured Works" section in the first post to "Works that need Reviewing". Any non-competition piece that is posted will go there until somebody reviews it. If anyone can think of better wording that is less lame, please feel free to suggest it. In other news, I'd like to know what your thoughts are on the name. Since I assume I'll be making a new thread in Off-Topic, the name that we choose now will stay for a long while (apparently you can't change thread names anymore). I have heard some people who still don't like the way it is now, and would prefer "The Writers' Thread". Other possibilities include, but are not limited to: The Writers Thread The OCR Writers Thread OCR Writers If you have a preference on the new name, please let us know. You are welcome to submit your own name, too.
  13. I haven't had a chance to read the chapter yet, or to review chapters 8 or 7. I will give you a short review of the plot/characters thus far, however. Characters I have told you before that I feel I can relate to Damian, and I feel that his character is progressing along nicely. I also like Ann, though she isn't a very deep character. I was really disappointed that the other guy died (sorry, haven't read the story in awhile and I'm bad with names), and that his story wasn't developed any more than it was. It seems to be a very abruptly ended character (though that makes it really easy to write a prequel...not that I'm suggesting it). As for the other characters, none of them seem terribly deep or dynamic (deep does not mean the same as mysterious), but the story still seems in its beginnings so that may change. Plot The plot is good, and seems like it's pretty deep. I'm getting a little afraid that it will at any moment fall apart or become cliche, though I can't tell you why I feel this way. One thing that bothers me a little is how cliche it is for there to be a male/female duo traveling together. Just so long as it doesn't play out that she gets captured and he rescues her, this should be fine. Remember that you walk a fine line of originality vs. same old same old. One other thing about the plot that bothers me is all of these flashes to other places. Something about it doesn't seem very well done; it seems out of place and almost immature in styling. That may just be personal opinion, though, so take it with a grain of salt. Other than that, I'll get to Chapter 8 when I get a chance, and keep up the good work! EDIT I wanted to take this chance to say that if your work is posted in this thread, you can expect a similar review to this one (though I usually go more in-depth). I try to review anybody's work that wants it done. I have to warn you though, sometimes it is harsh and sometimes it takes me a long time to get to it.
  14. The Writer’s Thread II THIS THREAD IS ONLY TEMPORARY, AND WILL BE ABANDONED ONCE THE OFF-TOPIC FORUM IS MADE. IF IT IS BREAKING ANY RULES THAT I DON'T KNOW OF, I WOULD APPRECIATE A NOTE FROM THE MODS AND A LOCK AS OPPOSED TO A FULL DELETE. News Well, as you all know, The Writer's Thread II is dead and gone. If we're lucky, it may be in the hidden mod forum, waiting to be revived. Otherwise, I plan to begin fresh when the Off-Topic forum finally hits. As for the writing competition, unfortunately anything that was posted on page 4 through 7 has been lost, and for now I plan on canceling. I simply can't think of a better way to handle the situation. If your work was on here for the competition, you may repost and I'll add it to the front page list (this will be brought back when the Off-Topic forum is created). I'll also try to review as much of the previously posted work as I can find time for. I apologize for the recent events here, and I promise as soon as possible we will get things worked out. In the meantime, keep writing! Works That Need Reviewing These are the most recent works submitted that have not yet been reviewed (Remember, only works submitted as links can be on the front page): Eternal Legends: Chapter 8 by GA Jedi Knight Blue-Tinged Angel by Old Man Time Submission Rules In order to submit a work to be reviewed on this thread, you must first offer a review of another person’s writing. If you want your work added to my list, you must submit it as a link. You can host it at www.writing.com or any of the popular file-sharing sites. Please include the title of your work in your post. Happy submitting!
  15. I wanted to set this straight: the second thread that I made was NOT deleted, it was moved to the mod forum. I have spoken with zircon on aim, and he is looking into the deletion of the Writers' Thread. My previous thread was never intended to be a fight with the mods, I merely wanted to understand the recent occurrences. There are many people on here tonight who have been expressing a great deal of unnecessary modhate. Just because you don't understand doesn't mean that the mods are evil, or that they should be ridiculed. I believe we're all keeping them plenty busy as-is, without all of this whining and complaining. As with every major issue in this forum's history, this will eventually settle down, and until then I suggest we try to understand each other instead of slinging insults. I suspect this thread will get locked, but I wanted to express these things anyway. I also wanted to express gratitude for the general good work of the mods in keeping these forums clean and (mostly) bot-free. They may still make mistakes, but that doesn't mean they aren't good mods.
  16. Definitely come to the Writer's Thread, as Bahamut suggested. There is at least one guy there who will give you a heartfelt review.
  17. I can't tell from the rules: are non-contestants allowed to vote?
  18. LOL Station wagon!!! Here's what I got: - Logitech cordless keyboard and mouse (which I'm using right now) - potato ocarina from Peru - DVD player (and YOU thought everyone had one ) - hiking boots and socks - nice lightweight 30 degree sleeping bag - 2CD Vivaldi compilation - Dremel kit Now I really want to go hiking!
  19. Happy Chrismahannukwanzaakuh to you all! Or, if you prefer the more 'politically correct' version: Happy Holidays!
  20. I'm not upset. I just have to figure out a way to record while it's playing without recording the song itself again. record the background music to a cd, or sync it to a mp3 player. The listen to it on headphones on a low volume, and record and sing off the mike? I actually used my headset to record(lawlz I have no real mic), so I tried this already. It doesn't work. In fact, the music is recorded louder this way. I know that can work, because I've done recording that way before. Maybe a headset would mess it up, though.
  21. Just going off-topic to say that the PS3 got smacked by the writers at woot today. Dare I say, "pwned!!11"?
  22. Turns out I'm not gonna be able to enter. The timing just wasn't good. Maybe I'll try for the next one, though. Good luck everyone!
  23. sort of...true, myspace is sorta below facebook, because you have some folks' pages who literally drop the "F" bomb like it's so cool!! saying F--- this, F--- that, F--- you!! but if you were to view my page, none of that will show up!!www.myspace.com/kid_thunder Notice...people been saying that they like what I'm doing with my page and everything and they like the song on here!! So check it out!! Your page is an abomination. well, i don't see how it is so...since i don't think there would be nothing wrong with it...heck, i don't even have any "F" words on there...so what could possibly be wrong with it? I sincerely hope you're kidding. Really. For your own sake.
