NFL doesnt pay musicians, or its taxes.

No, but Actors have to go on countless daytime and late night shows to *promote* the movies they star in. The movies are a product, just like albums, and going to talk to some late night dude for say, 10-13 minutes is part of what they are required to do to *promote* their product. They don't get paid for those appearances, or the countless interviews. How much would you pay to advertise your entire Willrock catalog to 100 million people for 10 minutes? Because the superbowl performance wasn't about music, it was about business and promotion. -

OCR03205 - *YES* Final Fantasy 9 'Late Night Lindblum'
OceansAndrew replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Can we get a source breakdown on this, please? The source connection seems really low, so I am assuming I am missing something. SPent over an hour A/Bing and can find only tenuous connections. -
OCR02906 - *YES* Final Fantasy 4 'Dreams of Glory'
OceansAndrew replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I really like the concept of this a lot; the speed is good, and the overall feel is solid. The breakdown is nice, and the solo is pretty well written. The rhythm guitar part sounds pretty fakey, and without subtle nuances and imperfections, having the same pattern for each part gets pretty samey. The drums also suffer a bit from this, though there are little variations and some minor fills that help that a bit more. I think larger fills as well as some builds into sections like the breakdown and solo would help the excitement of the piece. I also think that additional attention to the sequenced leads would be nice; Really get some more expression and modulation into those long notes. What is there right now is fine and serviceable, but it could be so much more. The ending is also a little abrupt; it's fine as an ending, but to pull it off, you will need a bit more warning and a full measure drum fill might do the trick. I think it's pretty close and you might get some YES votes regardless, but I think the detail work on this needs to be touched up a bit and resubbed. I enjoyed it a lot but don't think it lives up to your potential. No, please resubmit -
Congrats OCR's Vig / Zedd on Grammy win

I like the opening synth arpeggio, what are you using for that? -
I am not really hearing a low end in this at all. THere is some in the kick, but otherwise it's really pushed in the mids, with a distinct absence in the low end. I really like the arrangement, but it sounds like everything here is pushed into a really small filtered space. I really think this is cool, but i'd check to see if you have a highpass filter on the master or something, it sounds really cramped in a specific frequency range. I A/B'ed it with several other songs just to check my listening setup. No, please resubmit

This is pretty damn solid. I really like the constant beat and the 16th note synth pattern, and of course there is a sonic SFX inclusion or two. It's a sonic remix after all! The repetition is a little prominent in the second time around, but there are minor changes that keep it unique. I do think mixing it up a bit more would have been a little more exciting, but overall I think this is a cool take on a classic and is strong enough to clear the bar as-is. I am not certain that every judge will feel the same, so good luck on the vote. Yes

*NO* Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons 'Lava Raga'
OceansAndrew replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
Pretty cool mood established here overall. The samples were fine, and the mood conveyed was solid. I'd have preferred a little more percussive excitement overall, as there wasn't much in the way of fills or even cymbal crashes- just a looped (though layered) beat. I really think that as the song goes on, the beat is what feels the weakest to me. The ending sounded a bit dissonant to me as well, im not sure if that part that comes in at the end really adds to the piece, but for me personally it detracts. Make that beat exciting! Please! No, please resubmit -
Brutal rendition of the track and it sounds really good from a metal standpoint, but the leads are buried under the sands of the sahara (meaning I can't hear them well enough at all). The rhythm, bass, and drums are tight and punchy, and the arrangement additions are superb. I think it could use a bit of a solo and maybe a more defined ending, but the main thing is that the leads are not nearly prominent enough. Really really strong work otherwise that i'd love to hear a resub on. No, please resubmit

This is really really good stuff, not every transition worked for me, and i have a feeling that CHM produced that snare (), but this is the kind of stuff I love hearing. Great synthwork and guitar playing, and a good, balanced sound. It's almost as good as my Metal Gear song, keep practicing! JK, it's very good and has a lot of really nice themes mixed into one. Very good work! yes

*NO* Conker's Bad Fur Day 'A Poo at the Opera'
OceansAndrew replied to DragonAvenger's topic in Judges Decisions
I gotta second Larry here, the whole track sounds like it is being run through a distortion filter. Arrangement and performances were solid, but the sound quality is way too lossy. I would love to hear a resub. No, please resubmit -
*NO* Animal Crossing: New Leaf 'Pour Avina'
OceansAndrew replied to Palpable's topic in Judges Decisions
I think the arrangement is very nice, refined and nuanced, but the humanization of the parts or the performance of the piece is where it falls a bit flat, and a lot of the little details like the tails of the strings cutting out early and not fading completely, or the velocities of the piano being hit a bit hard. Adding some more delicate touches to the piano as far as how hard the keys are being hit would help he feeling, and a little bit more of rubato here and there would be nice as well. THere is some that makes it feel a lot nicer, so anything you can do to really up the emotion is good. I look forward to a resub, this is overall nice! No, please resubmit -
*NO* GoldenEye 007 'What Lurks in the Facility'
OceansAndrew replied to Palpable's topic in Judges Decisions
I think the sound and balance sounded pretty good to me, had a strong Rammstein feel to the guitars, and I think the melody was fine between the synth and the little bells playing the melody. I do agree that it did get a bit too copypasta though, and i think the only real changes needed would be to make the variations more prominent. Classy ending too, minus the blip at the end of the volume. I think this is very close, as the soundscape and mixing sound good to me overall, I just think the second half of the arrangement needs a bit more to differentiate it. Very strong and moody stuff. Hit us up with a revision, please! No, please resubmit -
*NO* Secret of Mana 'Measuring Uncharted Territory'
OceansAndrew replied to Palpable's topic in Judges Decisions
volumewise the clean leads are being completely lost. The solo is a good volume, but everything else is so background-focused, it makes the song sound really unbalanced. The arrangement is great, and the added parts are clever and fit with the existing source pretty well. I think for a more authentic djent sound you need to reduce the distortion slightly in the rhythm guitars, but otherwise it is pretty good stuff. I think this is passable based on overall production and arrangement but the clean leads need to come up a ton. It seems like a huge oversight that they are at the level they are at now. No, please resubmit -
This is a nice source and a pretty good sound treatment. The arrangement is nice, and there is good variation on the main aspects of the source but at times the production seems almost a little too hardcore, with an overly high RMS. The sidechained saw pad at the 3:00 section is a little too hyped and is pwning the master compressor. I'd bring it down a touch. It's not a dealbreaker for me personally, but is something to be mindful of in future subs. Nicely chosen sounds, a creative and personalized arrangement with plenty of source use, and a good source theme. Yes

*NO* Final Fantasy 6 'Gizmo Lovin' Sasquatch'
OceansAndrew replied to Palpable's topic in Judges Decisions
Gonna have to agree with Vinnie on the source use, but have a little additional feedback on the rest of the track. The low hits at :36 were not doing it for me in context; they were super exposed and sounded behind the beat. If you wanted to rework the exact same feel but to keep it in the site's standards, replacing the Inspector Gadget theme with Kefka's would be pretty similar in a lot of ways. You definitely don't need to, as this is a sweet track, but as-is, it falls a little outside of the site's scope. No -
OCR02936 - *YES* Donkey Kong Country 'A Different Kind of Peace'
OceansAndrew replied to Palpable's topic in Judges Decisions
This is a pretty short track, but has a great build for its 2:34 duration, and offers something new for this done-to-death VGM song. Both the quiet Darth Vader sections and the booming Hans Zimmer choruses are well-executed, though the segues between the two were abrupt and could have been foreshadowed a little more. I also think there's a slight rigidity issue with the lead instruments in the choruses, but it's a nitpick. Great stuff from Jesse! YES ps. i just copy/pasted Vinnie's vote. Says it all. JK, i do think a little further development would have been nice, maybe with a booming halftime feel with the main melody in the brass, though I am not sure the samples would support that style and still sound as solid. Overall very good! -
*NO* Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons 'All That Remains'
OceansAndrew replied to Palpable's topic in Judges Decisions
Chimpazilla has this pretty well evaluated I think; the source connection is tenuous in a lot of spots, and unless you really strain, the connection to the overworld theme passes by without notice. The soundscape itself is pleasant enough, and im not personally bothered by the reverb, though the sleigh bells do sound a few miliseconds behind and aren't treated with the same type of room sound. I think adding more source that is dominant and identifiable would help this out for me, and while I am enjoying the mood it presents, it needs some further polish before i can give it a yes. No, please resubmit -
OCR02933 - *YES* Final Fantasy 4 'La Fin de Zeromus'
OceansAndrew replied to Palpable's topic in Judges Decisions
fisher price 'my first drum kit'; that thing sounds pretty weak! Most everything else is clicking very well, and the transitions are decent. It sounds like some sections are a bit scooped in the mids, bit overall it's filled out pretty well. This is pretty good overall, nice work. Yes -
*NO* Paper Mario 'Rawwkin with the King of the Koopas'
OceansAndrew replied to Palpable's topic in Judges Decisions
Guitar playing is pretty solid overall, some minor shredding and some more emotional phrasing mixed in. Mixing is pretty off in the first section, with the snare and lead guitars sounding really muffled. The organ and shaker/hats fit into the space ok, but it makes a lot of the leads sound cheap and tiny. The second section is mixed differently with a more open lead tone that has some highend, this sounds better from a mixing standpoint. The rhythm sound and the bass wasn't really gelling for me here, though, with the rhythm sounding a bit too distant. The arrangement sounded like source mixed with a lot of soloing, and not much interpretation of the theme itself. If I am missing something obvious, other judges hit me up. Overall I think the mixing is my biggest concern, as you definitely know how to play guitar, and the arrangement itself could stand to be a bit more streamlined and personalized with the source itself. I think there is some good stuff going on here, but it needs polish. No, please resubmit
