  1. I definitely agree that there is a bit too much teasing going on here; I thought it'd open up wide at :38, :54, 1:53 and it never really did. The dynamics never got to the really solid arrival climax. There's something close at 3:06ish, but it still isn't a defining moment. The mix of percussive textures is sick as hell, and the mood overall is good if not a bit melody-light, and the samples are well used. As far as soundscapes go, this is well on it's way. I suggest bringing some sections down in intensity a touch, and one or two way up to get a more pronounced dynamic curve. Overall I am really feeling this, it just needs a bit more of an overall plan. No, please resubmit
  2. Nice bass ideas, and a pretty good collection of synths I think work pretty well together. There are a few things that are initially bugging me though, like the sequencing on the violin solo part is pretty stiff; and some of the mixing is unbalanced. There is a cymbal hit at 1:12 that almost blew me out of my chair, it was so up front and loud. I thought the ensemble strings were feeling really nice though. Some additional humanization on the piano and harpsichord would be nice too. Overall I felt that the mashup was pretty intelligent and the arrangement was nice and flowed well. I think there are enough production issues to warrant some tweaks. I think the harpsichord can come down in a few sections, where the mood called for it (the intro or other exposed parts). Drums were fine; the snare didn't have much presence, but i think it worked out well enough, and the synths and ensemble strings were classy. I don't really think the sequencing or sample of the solo violin is quite up to par; you may want to consider swapping the instrument for something else, or getting some live playing. A sidechain on the bass for the kick would help a bit too. Overall I really enjoyed it, but I think that it needs some additional production touchups. I'd love to hear this polished up a bit more! No, please resubmit
  3. thanks for the timestamp, Vinnie! I feel that the dominant source is also a bit on the shallow end, but the spirit of the track burns brightly, and when it's there, it's pretty apparent. I really enjoyed the personalization, and the beats and bass themselves could make for a compelling track. Great sequencing, nice production, and a good arrangement and full soundscape, this is really nice. I like that the sounds use really take me back to classic OCR times when it seemed like everyone was using these FL defaults for their Mega Man songs. Really nice stuff, and while a touch more source melody would be nice; the feel is enough for me to vote Yes
  4. happy birthday! Eat many delicious things!
  5. happy birthday to one of my original OCR bros <3
  6. The actual start point is irrelevant, but categorizing and planning for goals is crucial to direct your own life and move towards how you want to be living.
  7. Yeahhhh, this is more like it! THough the sounds are similar in a lot of respects, the depth the song has now is really nice, and the drums pack a way bigger punch. I enjoyed the arrangement a lot the first time around, and this is pretty much a fully realized version of the same track. Very nice, and I'm sure Crash fans will love this! Yes
  8. Nice textures in this, and the bass and drums have a really nice groove together; the synch keeps the main hook present throughout, while the rest is expanded upon. The sounds fit really nicely together, and the overall mood was classy. It has a bit of a winter vibe and an uplifting mood, which makes it really nice to listen to. Good production, good expansion, nice source, seems to add up to a Yes to me!
  9. Gotta agree that the accordion performance was the highlight, and that the drum samples were not getting it done. I loved the right panned semi-chip synth, but the hard panning was not working out based on the size of frequency range it took up; that needs to be centered, or at least doubled and filtered on the other side. The arrangement additions are very nice and pretty smart, and with the exceptions to the drum solo section, pretty good transitions. That specific one felt sudden and pretty underwhelming. Overall this needs a bit of production touchup, and some more compelling drum sounds before it can pass. The performance aspect was very nice, and the arrangement has promise. If you'd like some individual help with some samples, hit me up and I can assist you personally. No, please resubmit
  10. Yeah, this is pretty sweet, and THere is high end, but it seems to be eaten up completely by a lot of reverb and headroom. It actually sounds like a late 70's production style here, which matches the instrumentation pretty closely, meaning the fidelity is possibly an artistic choice. Nothing wrong with a bit of retro, though a little more sizzle in the track would be appreciated. THe arrangement was close but definitely personalized, no qualms there, and solid playing. Transitions were fine, and the sound choices were really nice together. The middle section was the hotness, loved that! The sudden cutoff is unfortunate and should be fixed; let the track fade completely before ending. I think the track is very very close, but just needs a few tweaks, and a better fade at the end. Nice work gentlemen, I await a resubmission! No, please resubmit
  11. I definitely agree with larry about the buzzing, those frequencies could have been toned down a good deal with no real change to the overall mood. It just sounds like a lot of clipping to me. It probably was a conscious decisoon, but that doesn't mean it necessarily is working out. The approach was pretty good, but most of the song just coasts on the two chords, which the progression is pretty common, making it feel more generic. The melody treatment, when present was pretty nice and personalized a bit, but it was a pretty small part of the song. I am fine with the production style though I feel it's sub-optimal, but the song focusing on a common two chord progression for a large chunk of time makes me feel like there is not enough source that is dominant. I think adding some more in would help this. No, please resubmit
  12. The source is pretty nice, and the arrangement itself is a little basic to me, but there are some nice expansions to the theme incorporated. I think the drums are a decent addition, and while a little plodding, give the song some extra interest. I really enjoyed the sound effects and background ambience, and the counterpoint writing was nice and added a good level of personalization. I think the panning could have been a little more pronounced and would have helped with clarity in the busier sections, but overall the mix was nice. I wasn't blown away by any specific aspect of it, but it was personalized and well-expanded upon. Yes
  13. The intro felt really dissonant to me overall, and the kick was buried hard under the bass, but there was a lot working on this track for me. The constant shifts to tones and styles was pretty cool, and worked reasonably well; There was a lot of cool experimental playing and ideas, and while I don't think they all hit, most of them did, and when they did, they did very well. Overall I think it's very close, but dat bass is smothering so much, that it's hard to really lock into the groove for me. The solos were excellent, and the concept is great, but I think some EQ needs to happen in the bass for me to want to pass this. I think a more defined dynaic curve would be helpful as well, but the real issue for me is the bass. No, please resubmit
  14. This feels close to me in a lot of ways, but the mixing and the drum samples seem pretty off; the guitars sound super scooped and are lacking low mids, making them sound really thin and buzzy. The drums sound really two dimensional and cheap; the part writing for them is good, but the sounds themselves are pretty GM sounding, which brings the energy down a good deal. The bass is also a bit boxy in the low mids and lacks a really good low end. Between the bass, kick, and scooped guitars, it's like the pancake butt of mixes, no lowend on it. The arrangement is creative and has a lot of new parts added in, I think the lead sound could be switched up a bit more, and the guitar performance is sounding pretty loose compared to the precise sequencing of the rest of the track, but it feels fine, as that was the goal. Overall I think it needs a bit of production tuneup to shine. No, please resubmit
  15. The reverb on the low end of the piano is so long that the bass notes are sounding dissonant due to overlap. The strings sounded pretty thin and beyond that, there wasn't much interpretation; everything here was in the source besides a few percussion hits. I enjoy the theme, but the arrangement needs to be greatly expanded and the production needs to be tightened up before it can get on OCR. I recommend hitting up the workshop thread to get some additional arrangement ideas and production tips. No
  16. It's pretty interesting, but may be a bit too messy and disjointed for me to really dig into. The cuts between source and no source aren't super clean, and the effects throughout are sweet, but the dynamics arent much more pronounced than 2 extremes. I'd like some mid ground. What this feels like to me is a great sound demo, and the elements are working, but it needs to feel more cohesive and dynamic. The source feels a bit shoehorned into some awesome effects, rather than the source being the foundation for an expanded, effect-heavy version of the song. Other judges may disagree here, but I think this needs a little more polish and direction. No, please resubmit
  17. This is a nice start to a mix; ultimately to me it felt pretty blocky where each section progressed, which is good, but only a single element was added or subtracted at a time. Some of the mixing was a bit off, with the guitar tone sounding brittle in the higher register. The filtering was good and was pretty cool, but combined with the brittle tone, it was a bit grating. I recommend hitting up the workshop thread and getting additional feedback and ideas on how to progress further with this! No, please resubmit
  18. Love the buildup, though it was a little cramed, and the sortof talky synh arpeggio is nice, but the song definitely gets a little too comfortable and into autopilot mode. The mixing is also pretty unbalanced. The talky synth, while cool, is overpowering both the piano melody, and a lot of the bass. It could definitely stand to come down in volume. Transitions worked on a basic level, but there weren't enough builds that lead the listener to them, so some of the excitement is lost. In the big boomy sections, the legato bass note feel overstuffed, and a lot of clarity isn't there, when it should be punchy and clean. The theme is good, but the repetition gets to be a bit much, especially when the now-patented talky synth just does it's 4 chords for the entire song. Very nice ideas added in, but there needs to be a bit more, and the production needs some cleaning as well. I like the road you are on, so polish it up a bit more and give us a resub! No, please resubmit
  19. What a beautiful melody, and a great and clear soundscape. I agree with Larry that a little bit more personalization would be what puts this over the bar; I really enjoyed the super delicate touch with the pads, and the gradual build of elements. I do think that adding in humanization of the part so it's not as stiff would give it a lot more personalization, and even more development would be good. As-is, it's beautiful but not unique enough from the original. No, please resubmit
  20. Excellent theme; great taste in source music! Sequencing and samples sounded pretty nice, and the opening was pretty well done, especially considering how exposed the leads were. A few minor realism ticks in the solo violin, but definitely nothing out of place, the solo instrument sequencing was definitely above the bar for me. The slow burn build was nice, though I was hoping it would get even bigger at the end. The guitar sounded almost too dirty for the soundscape; i'm all for crunch, but exposed like that without a bass guitar backup is a little tougher sell. Maybe it's because there were just light chugs and never any huge open chords that I felt it was a little out of place. The Ending is about to get huge, and then fakes me out for a small and intimate ending; I definitely think another minute of content could be added here, especially since it seemed so solid throughout. Overall the quality and direction of the mix are really good, but everything was handled so capably, I was expecting a bit more. Still well above the bar though. Yes
  21. I agree that the rhodes was a touch muddy, but it's a nice warm tone and there is plenty to love about the track; when it's by itself, it's fine as a style choice, and only is questionable to me when there is more going on. A little bit of EQ automation in certain sections would go a long ways, though I don't think it is so overbearing that it shuts down the sections. The arrangement is pretty sweet overall, and there is a lot of funky fun to be had. Funky Fun. Just think about it. Yes
  22. wow, awesome to see a resub from a song that was first subbed before I was even a member of the community! THis arrangement is excellent, and I think all it really needs is some EQ automation in a few specific areas to trim certain parts down slightly when there are more elements going on. It really has a classic bond feel to it, and the warmth of the track is awesome; it sounds lush throughout, but too full when there are multiple elements. The sound choices were excellent, and the specific treatment of your drumkit is awesome how faithful you were to the bond arrangement sound from the movie. How I would personally handle trimming the track would be to roll down the low mids in the strings when they are supporting, and then leave them be in the more exposed parts. The spots Larry mentioned are pretty much the only ones that need trimming, and it's basically the strings, brass, and piano that share frequency ranges. Another solution would be to bring the piano up an octave when things get filled, but i think the EQ would be more beneficial. Overall it's just the clarity that is bringing this down, the deliberate pace and smart arranging is excellent, and the sequencing is very good. I'm tempted to just vote yes based on the strengths, but i think that having a more clear version is worth the extra effort. Very big fan of this song! No, please resubmit!
