OCR01644 - Final Fantasy VII "Golden Feathers"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Goddamn, this is hilarious considering how good Mattias is with electronic music nowadays. He's come a damn long way since his noob days but this still feels like a very polished and enjoyable listen all the same. Just goes to show what a prolific and creative mixer he is and always has been -
OCR02127 - Animal Crossing "Camrade"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Oh hell yes, this is tiiiiighhtt! It totally plays off of the great melodies from the original (*stares angrily at the AC haters) and really breathes a ton of new life into it, which is why I was so disappointed to see the Animal Crossing project fail - the source tunes, while they may sound unconventional, are full of great melodies like this one that can be adapted in so many ways. Major props on the KK samples too, that's just awesome! -
OCR02138 - NiGHTS into dreams... "The Polar Express"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This arrangement is deceptively simple, so the groove and the vibe really carries this song. Honestly, when you're going for this kind of chillout feel, you don't need to go all-out with the instrumentation. I do feel like the piano is a little weak and could use some more tightening on the humanization level, but that's a minor quibble that doesn't interfere with my enjoyment of the song at the end of the day. This one's gonna be getting a lot of airplay on my end this holiday season, I love what you did! -
While I feel like the main draw of this track is the impeccable production and sample quality (I'll admit, I'm somewhat of a sample whore ) but the arrangement of this track goes a lot of places without feeling too stale. I'm getting some Mario Galaxy vibes from some of the orchestration, among many other things. Very diverse cinematic interpretation, while I do notice some of the copypasta that DJP alludes to in his writeup, I don't necessarily feel like it's a big problem ultimately.

Josh Whelchel is a beast, that's all that needs to be said. I love how this builds up very deliberately over time, starting off with a very small set of instruments and adding more while still maintaining the feel that was set in the original for most of the song. The thin kit drums are a bit of an odd choice for the genre and, surprisingly, I feel like they work just as good as a typical orch kit would have, thanks to the constant presence of the bells and synths throughout the song. The more intense string parts offer a good counterpoint and keep this mix interesting throughout. I always appreciate attempts like this to keep the orchestral genre fresh and interesting!

OCR02111 - NBA Jam "From Downtown"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Love the drumming on this one right from the start. The song feels a little sparse for a while until around :54, but after that point I'm digging it. Especially given the source you were working with, this is a great effort. Piano soloing around 1:24 is a real highlight for me, this totally feels like a Bad Dudes track after that point (as if it didn't already!) I think everyone has a different point where the track clicks for them, but regardless I think it's ultimately an enjoyable listen and a great expansive take on the source. -
OCR02103 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "Old School"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This song caught me off guard at first. The pacing, the synth choices, the beat... it's one of those mixes that's really hard to pigeonhole. Obviously there was some inspiration here to take the source in an unconventional, unusual direction like this, so I've gotta give you props. This mix took a long while to grow on me, but I've certainly come to appreciate the way it was executed. -
OCR02131 - Final Fantasy IV "Treason"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Can't say I'm too much of a fan of this genre, but I can certainly see a lot of merit in this track. The lead guitar work is pretty great and captures a pretty intense mood. As Brandon pointed out, the mechanical drums seem like a bit of a weak point. Overall, this is a pretty crunchy, distorted, vicious track that does a pretty good job with the genre it tackled, even if it's not necessarily my cup of tea, I can see why a lot of people like this one. -
OCR02095 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "Tetanus"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
That synth... damn, that feels so inspired. It really helps build up the intensity of the track more than you might think it would. Of course, the rest of the track ain't bad either - it's pretty much exactly what I would have hoped for out of the first Lockjaw's Locker remix on the site. Intense, moody, and well-produced... what's not to love? -
OCR02101 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "Party's Over Here"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Hey! OA sure does know how to party This track exudes cheesiness out the ass but at the end of the day I honestly love it. Great melodies, particularly in the guitar solo towards the end... and I don't care how biased this site can be against fadeouts, I think it worked well here. I wasn't sure what could really be done with Cranky's Conga for the project so I'm glad you took it in a unique direction here. C'mon! -
OCR02134 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "High Seas"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
What impresses me most about this mix is how far Justin was able to go with a 30-second source tune. He really stretches it to its limits with a lot of dynamic tempo/rhythmic/melodic alterations that give this track life beyond a lot of other pure orchestral mixes. In particular, I love the plucked strings during some of the lighter, airier sections of the song. Nice work, as usual -
OCR02097 - Donkey Kong Country 2 "How K. Rool Went Insane"
Emunator replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Ross sure has a way of crafting songs that are downright crazy, in perhaps a more literal sense than is usually used to describe music The melodies are spastic and quirky and a lot of fun to jam along to on keyboards actually. Pretty much every synth and bell in the mix seems picked specifically for the purpose of making the song sound even more insane so that the final remix is really a trip to listen to. Perhaps not the most true-to-source theme on Serious Monkey Business, but damn if it isn't enjoyable Good work Ross! -
When I heard Nutritious had a song of his featured on the Gears disc of the Xeno project, I was pretty shocked, cause up til that point I'd only heard straight-orchestral material from him. This a shockingly-well-executed change of pace for him, though I do like how he worked in his usual orchestral style into the breakdown sections of the song. The sax was a real nice touch too

It's the lemon who saved Christmas! Love your WIP man, you tore it up so far! This is the kind of work ethic I like to see. CLAIM SONG - TURN IN WIP 20 MINUTES LATER <3 u

I agree that when you have really quiet leads like the flute playing, the snare really needs to be brought back a bit so those melodies can be more audible. The same goes for your double bass in the last minute of the song, those need to be brought down a notch or compressed some so they'll fit better into the sound field. I do like the fatter sound you're getting out of your drums overall though, it's definitely an improvement. The closing note is pretty weak, you could definitely find a more powerful stab to end the song with. The orchestration and arrangement is pretty spotless though, I'd say if you can work out the last few kinks in your drums and the ending, this should be good to go Great work improving this one, it's come a loooong way!

Here's to one of the most diversely talented up-and-comers on OCR who's already got a handful of amazing remixes, several game scores, and an entire opera under his belt, among other things. Mad props to you on all you've accomplished by such a young age, here's hoping for much more awesomeness in the future! Hope your day is/was awesome!

Aww yeah I'm so in for this again. Last year I was one of two to reach the coveted 200 reviews mark and I aim to meet it again this year. So glad you guys brought this up again!

No worries, I checked with Liontamer and he said you're fine on the actual project release

So, uhh, the deadline's passed. Thanks to Malcos, Peach, Chernabogue, and Blue Magic for the updates over the past two days. The rest of you make me sad I've cut two artists and are currently working on replacing them. If you have been cut then you need to get me a WIP with significantly more progress before I find someone to replace your track, which I'll be getting on tomorrow. The rest of you who haven't finished your songs yet, you've got until February 11th, 2011 (my birthday) to finish your songs. I will be very sad if you don't get them done, because I like the way the tracklist looks right now and I don't want to have to cut songs outright. That would suck. So please, get your songs into me ASAP so we don't have to push far past the deadline. Now for the cool stuff! I've updated the tracklist to reflect the current status, as well as give you guys a sneak preview of some of the awesome track names that artists have come up with *ogles over "The Submap Emissary* Also, we've got a brand new batch of animated promo sig banners coming up in the next 48 hours, we're in the process of pimping them out with as much cool stuff as we can fit now Stay tuned for that. So, thanks to the few of you who turned something in today. I genuinely appreciate it

How bout them flutes? Did you ever figure out how you're gonna handle those or if anyone's going to perform them live?
-
Alright, crunch time is here! Just wanted to let you know that we'll be leaking some cool stuff at the end of today after this deadline is all said and done, and I'll announce the date of the final deadline as well. So, let's get things started! I've already got 2 almost-finished WIPs from Peach and Malcos, and I'm hoping to hear many more by the end of the day. Get to it!
