  7. Hey all. I was lurking on Reddit earlier when I saw a post for a Final Fantasy VI remix album which had recently been released. Sean Schafianski's Final Fantasy VI Garritan is a collection of 51 orchestral remasterings of music from FFVI. Schafianski did a pretty darn good job updating the tracks, and it's free to boot so I figured I'd pass the links on to you guys. The album is available via MegaUpload here or by FileDropper here. Schafianski also has a Youtube channel if you want to check that out. As far as my favorite tracks, "Dark World" has pretty solid instrumentation and an excellent soundscape, and "Forever Rachel" is poignant and touching. There's plenty to like about Schafianski's remasterings, and I'd encourage you guys to check them out.
  8. Christmas special this week! Tune in at 7PM Eastern to hear some excellent Winter/Holiday-themed VGM. We also have some selections from jmr's latest chiptune album, "Yellow Hat." Hope to see you guys!
  9. Will definitely run on a netbook. For 1.50 USD this is an utter bargain. Had many hours of fun with the original, and I'd definitely suggest you give it a try.
  10. Hey all! Random (aka Mega Ran), the rapper behind "Mega Ran 9" and "Forever Famicom", is releasing his "Final Fantasy 7" album on January 31st. His music does justice to the subject material and he has a way of connecting with gamers on a deep level. He really is one of the most talented, thought-provoking VGM artists out there, and I wanted to share the upcoming album with you guys. The album page has the first single, "Aerith", available now (stream for free, pay what you want to download). If this track is any indication of what is to come, then we should all be really excited. Here's looking forward to 1/31/11!
  11. Yo! The show is live right now, and the release party will start around 8:15 PM Eastern. You can tune in and chat at http://8bitx.com/ircchat.
  12. ಠ_ಠ ...okay that was pretty good.
  13. Listening party this Wednesday, Dec. 15th after the Radio Free Gamer podcast. Should start around 8:15PM Eastern, and you can tune in and chat here. Hope you guys can make it!
  14. After the podcast portion of this week's RFG, we're going to have an official "Super Metroid Remastered" listening party! Tenchux has been dutifully releasing (via Youtube) one song from his new album every day for the past two weeks, and this Wednesday will be your first opportunity to download the whole album in MP3 form! Join us in the 8BitX Chat around 8:15 PM Eastern this Wednesday, December 15th to discuss the album. As part of the album release, we at 8BitX are also holding a charity drive benefitting Child's Play. Tenchux is still a good ways away from his goal of $1,000, so if you're in a giving mood please hit up the donation site. Every little bit counts!
  15. Huge thanks to everyone who attended the show. There were more people there than I had ever seen at a GSO concert before, and the concert was very memorable. When the recordings go up on the GSO home page in the coming months, I would be sure to check out "Emotional Skyscraper" and the Aria from FF6. Thanks again
  16. This source just begs for this kind of mix. The fade-in around 0:27 was great, and the sax really brought the mix to another level. My personal favorite part was the string instrument (guitar? bass?) that started around 1:10. Just gave this mix a unique touch while connecting it to the melody in a unique way.
  17. Wow, I really loved the buildup in the intro, and the swift transition around 0:30 seconds. Really an attention grabber. Also enjoyed the wide range of samples featured in the arrangement, really kept me on my toes. The vocal bit and the whistling might not have been the strongest part of the mix, but they were certainly unique and enjoyable.
  18. The drums at the beginning were interesting, and I was eager to see what they were setting up. It felt like an intro to a chase scene from a 70's spy movie. I liked the synths as well, and they sound very unique. Would have liked it a bit more if you had done something more with the mix (some soloing, or taking the source in another direction). I just felt like the mix ended before it really took me anywhere.
  19. Already covered that one, but I'm glad to see you guys picked up the slack Not too much longer before all of them hit 11. I'll do my best to get to all the 10's shortly.
  20. Really enjoyed the mini-solo around 2:15, that was the highlight of this track for me and the place where everything seemed to sync up the best. Good use of the voice samples from the game as well.
  21. Interesting track. The slow intro and down-tempo pace seem oddly appropriate, considering that Wrinkly Kong does eventually return as a ghost. The mix has that somewhat eerie sound to it which eventually gives way to a more orchestral feeling. Definitely made me think a bit.
  22. Yo! The OCR Link's Awakening album might not be out yet, but you can get the lowdown on tonight's RFG as to why you should be excited about it! Of course, we have some great video game music to play as well, including the official Obligatory Ice Level Day album. What is OLID, and what does it have to do with some of your favorite remixers? Well, tune in RIGHT NOW to find out!
  23. The ambient soundscape, instrumentation, and arrangement of this mix all work together to create strong imagery. When the tone of the mix changes around 2:00 to something much more chill, the solos introduced are really strong (esp the flute solo around 3:00). Very good mix!
  24. I enjoyed the sax at the beginning of the track, but for me this track gets a little busy when the vocals kick in. When the section with the organ and vocals starts around 1:55, things clear up and an excellent, almost mystical tone is set for the rest of the mix. Great work on the vocals as well. Good mix!
