  1. Oh man, I remember when you first put this in the wip boards. I didn't see any updates for a while and I wondered if you'd worked on it any. I'm glad you did! Also, I agree completely with the name of this album - it's perfect.
  2. My first mix: http://www.box.net/shared/9h4htc2gf6 While some parts aren't that great, I still love the hell out of the section of hydrocity with flamenco guitar, piano, and saxophone (complete with latin-style drums!). I may make a mix of hydrocity using this section as a base.

  5. You know, when I saw that you started a thread and the title began with "new video!", I immediately thought "Fuck yes!" Seriously though, I am always in wait of your next video. Keep up the good work!

I've actually been quite disappointed in the soundtracks of games I have played somewhat recently (note that I am not saying all games that have come out recently, just that I haven't played any that has surprised me). I miss the memorable music from games... from the recent games, I remember not a single track whereas old games that I haven't played in years I can recall. I have found that with the increase use of the orchestra, most games are starting to not only sound the same, but also really boring and completely forgettable (probably something to do with "hey, he used an orchestra - I can do that too!"). The only exception I've found is (gasp!) Sonic Unleashed, which had some interesting tracks (though some forgettable as well). It still pales in comparison to say, Sonic 3&K or Sonic 2, but I definitely thought it was better than other modern games. Hell, I remember ONE track from FFXII. I remember too many to count from FFVI and FFVII. I'm not saying the orchestra can't be memorable or exciting, but from what I've played, composers need to start stepping it up. Or just focusing on other instruments (yes, we get it, the orchestra has brass in it) and melodies to create interesting tracks instead of just background sound.
  7. The data isn't useless as it can be used for info about EQ and other effects you can add to a song. I was wondering if the FFT data for various percussive instruments was already out there. I've found some snare spectra, but that's it already (the people were comparing different snare batter heads and seeing what the spectra looked like). Hmmm..I've heard of Csound, but I didn't think it could do that. I should look into this. Thanks!
  8. I would need to do an FFT for each note to get information about what harmonics are there are how loud they are, not for ADSR. Sorry, I should have been more clear. Yoozer: I'm looking to create a simple program to create songs from scratch, and as such I won't be using another program. I just want to be able to add something to my resume that I enjoy working on (plus I'd like to create a few songs this way). Analoq: I know the reason SHARC doesn't have any percussive instruments, and I know that percussive instruments do not have harmonics and are mostly just noise in various ranges of frequencies with a fast attack and quick decay (for the most part). I know that it is a long shot to try to recreate percussive instruments, but I'd like to give it a shot, even though it won't sound exactly like the real deal (obviously).

I've certainly thought about trying to do it myself and by ear (and had planned on it if I couldn't find any info), but it would be helpful and would save much time if I had the data before hand. This way, I wouldn't have to find a sample in wave format, perform an FFT to get the frequency data and try to replicate it from there. Sure, that doesn't sound so bad, but it takes a little to set up and graph the FFT as well as having to do it for every note/hit that I want (e.g. 88 times on a piano, different spots on a cymbal, etc...) - and that's even if I can find the samples I want. I was just wondering if anyone had any information so I wouldn't have to do an insane amount of work.
  10. I'm writing a program to generate sounds from sine waves, and I have information for the harmonics, amplitude, and phase of the main orchestral instruments (tuba, trumpet, flute, oboe, etc...). I have been successful in creating a way to use the ADSR envelope in the generation of the sounds, but I am lacking information on the actual ADSR values of the instruments. I have tried searching around in various places without many results. Does anyone have this information or know where I could get some? I'm also looking for information on the spectra and ADSR of common percussive instruments (bass drum, snare, tom, cymbals, etc...) as well because I plan on attempting to generate some percussive sounding sine waves and I need some frequency data to try to replicate (though that's going to be difficult and probably not sound too much like it). If anyone has information on this I would appreciate it as well as results are even less than the instruments ADSR envelopes I've been searching for. Thanks.
  11. Musimathics (Volume I): The mathematical foundations of music by Gareth Loy. It's pretty awesome. So far, it's talked about physical properties of sound, the ear, how circles can be used to provide insight/math into simple harmonic motion and sound, psychoacoustics, the beginning of the interval and scales, and a whole lot more. I look forward to Volume II when I finish Volume I (I am maybe 1/3 the way in) as it has more to do with digital signal processing and other things.
  12. How about we celebrate Tetris by playing a better clone(ish), Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (which I think was a clone of something else, but I have forgotten)? Tetris is only fun for so long, but Dr. R's MBM stays fun all night long. Edit: Ah! I remembered that it's puyo pop that MBM is a clone of.
  13. I'm actually in College Park, MD for an internship at the Goddard Space Flight Center, so I may be able to make it. The only thing is that on the 28th, as part of the internship, we are going to Sudbury, Ontario (Canada), so I may not be able to make this. However, living where I do, I've had been this close to one of these concerts. I am definitely considering just going and not caring if I'm tired the next day because this sounds awesome.

    Scrubs Finale

    I agree that on the average, the earlier seasons were certainly better. However, I thought the finale was a pretty damn awesome series finale. The hallway of characters, allowing each of us to say goodbye to them as well as JD, the "home movie" future, and the show creator being the last one to say goodbye to JD (the janitor outside). Not to mention, it was a nice twist with JD actually putting the penny in the door and not the janitor screwing around with him because he could. Also, the rant book JD gave Dr. Cox? Such a nice bit of awesome. Scrubs is definitely one of my favorite shows and am sad to see it go, even if it was time (8 years? Damn). I hope they release a complete series box set with some extra features so I can pick up all the seasons. I wonder if they'll end up making a "season 9" of scrubs? Obviously few, if any, of the current people will be in it except the interns, but I think a new series based on them would be pretty good.
  16. I remember when you asked for reviewers in the OCRWIP IRC room. It was good then. It's amazing now. I was reading djp's writeup, and saw that you said you had influence from Naruto. I was thinking "Ok, but I don't hear it..." and then bam, on cue, the shamisen kicked in. But yeah, niiiiiice. I really love how it's not just heavy guitar, there's a lot in here.
  17. I'm using a laptop that was bought in January of '05. It's a Dell. I'm surprised it still works. I actually had to completely wipe the hard drive using dban though about 2 weeks ago because I had a virus/trojan/thing. Using hijack this! and Combo Fix actually seemed to annoy it and made things worse, so I just decided to nuke it anyway since I hadn't since I got it (and even then I didn't do a fresh install, I just removed the bogus crap that came with it). It reduced startup time from around 7-8 MINUTES to 45ish seconds before I can use firefox. Thanks, I appreciate it though =) I have to say though, I got a Saitek Eclipse (blue, of course) from newegg when it was on sale. I really can't wait until I have everything so I can use it.
  18. It was over a year ago I believe, and I never saved the link, unfortunately. Correct; the program looks at all the files it needs, and uses the data within to set the parameters of the huge sine function. All the parameters need to be re-evaluated for every instrument, every note, and every harmonic...and calculates the value of the sine for 44100 times a second. There's even more to it because I implement a basic ADSR envelope, so it has to calculate that for every note and harmonic as well. I'm actually surprised it took only 30 seconds to calculate hydrocity. I agree, I rather somewhat enjoy using matlab. It's quite fast. It certainly takes time to get used to using it, but it's really not that bad. The program does the analysis of the original data, then uses what it needs inside of the sine function. It works fine for me. What page do you get when you click on it? Ah, thanks.
  19. I wish I could enjoy my tax return. Instead, I owed over SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS. Turns out that some paid research work I did was taxed like a mofo ($600 out of $3300). I was hoping to use my tax return to finally build a computer, but well, that's gotta wait... I've been saving for over a year and only have a case (free), hard drive (christmas gift), psu, and keyboard :/ .
  20. Indeed. I had to go on $30 on food for two weeks, split between 2 people. Walmart certainly helped, since everything there is cheaper than Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Lowe's Foods, etc...
  21. I remember reading something where this guy was ranting at the horribleness that was the wav file (not the quality, but how it's written). From what I remember, it was something like a header section, then some data for each channel, then another header, then more data, etc... I couldn't understand why there needed to be so many headers, and why not something like "sample rate, number of channels, start of data, etc.." and then the data. I've never heard of verilog? What's it used for? The name reminds me of prolog...ugh. Indeed (on both accounts)!
  22. I knew you'd reply to this sometime since you were in a real-time class as well . I did everything in matlab (nice and easy vector operations and a nice function called wavwrite() which will take the data points and save it as a .wav file), but I'm thinking about porting it to C++ or Java over the summer if I'm bored (and so I can use it anywhere and not have to have matlab installed). I just need to figure out how to write wav files...I heard they have really stupid rules.
  23. So I just finished my real-time systems final project. We were to take an input file, consisting of stuff like: ... A4 Q E4 E. G4 S ... and our program would create a sound file of that tune. We used the SHARC Archive to provide the necessary information (i.e. frequency of each note playable by that instrument, number of harmonics, amplitude/phase of each harmonic, etc...) to get "real sounding" computer-generated instruments. Basically, we would read the info about the instrument into our program, and it would calculate the amplitudes for each note and its harmonics by this big sine wave: a * sin(2*pi*harmNum*fundamental(noteIndex)*t + phi) where a is the amplitude, harmNum is the harmonic number, fundamental(noteIndex) is the fundamental at the specific note (i.e. A4), t is the current time value, and phi is the phase. Now, since I found this so interesting, I went ahead and implemented chords and the ability to change instruments. Still not satisfied and still very interested in this, I thought it would be a good idea (and fun) to implement an ADSR envelope as well. And after much frustration and headache, I have finished. My input files now look like: ... inst tuba a#2 s inst trombone a#3 s e4 s inst tuba - s g2 e. inst trombone a#3 e. e4 e. inst tuba a#2 q inst trombone a#3 e e4 e inst flute_vibrato g6 s a#6 s inst tuba c3 e inst flute_vibrato c7 q inst tuba d#3 s c3 e. inst flute_vibrato - s g5 s a#5 s inst tuba d#3 s inst flute_vibrato c6 s ... and the result is something like this: Hydrocity Zone Act II Needless to say, I am quite happy. Have any of you ever used Fourier Synthesis or any other ways to generate sound?

  25. Ah, I always love your videos and as usual, this was very entertaining. It certainly made me think more about the devlopers and the choices they make into, well, developing games. I definitely look forward to the next one.
