I should try my hand at this short source. The judges would love it. Lots of layers of drums, big bass. Wish it'd do more with the melody, it's just repeated over different parts of the music. The breakdown at 2:50 is pretty cool in how the bass recedes, tho the track doesn't really build from there much.

So What's The Best Software?
Rozovian replied to SonicSynthesis's topic in Music Composition & Production
The problem is entitlement. You don't have to be the least bit committed to download stuff, all you need is to feel entitled to something to think you have every right in the world to get it. And you don't. Combine that with lack of patience and access to the riches of the internet and you have an absurd situation, really. In every other aspect of life you have to work for what you get. Just imagine if you felt entitled to a car, or girlfriend, or anything else that's not downloadable. Also, Emperor, welcome to ocr. The general advice is to lurk a bit before making friends by putting words in their mouths. To the OP: I use Logic, and I do recommend it, but I still think you should try out the demos of other stuff first to try out different ways of doing the same things. It's also a way of learning. I worked for years with trackers, then with GarageBand, and Logic was still pretty daunting when I first opened it. As a midi virgin, you shouldn't start in the deep end. Get the free (as in free beer, not as in stolen beer) stuff from the net, get demos, watch videos, and hang out here. -
There's a certain dragon's battle music... Really atmospheric. Source is btw is phrygian, so it has a note one seminote up from the root. I didn't hear you hinting at it, which made me expect it to happen later, as part of a buildup. it didn't. If you'd change your backing rhythm (the two low piano notes) by moving the second one up a seminote from ca 1:02 or wherever you'd get a sense of progression from it (tho you'd probably have to update the saw rhythm you've got at 1:12 to use it there too or it'd clash). Some of the percussion seem like they could use a touch of reverb, esp in the intro. Has a very dry sound, dunno what the judges would think of that. Some fills seem malplaced (like 1:34, feels like it should either be one step back (intro to 1:30) or a few steps forward). You've got a really cool snare roll in there, the one at 1:10, but the one at 1:48 sounds like it's not done yet. The ending sounds like it could be building up to a final big epic single-note finish, or to a next section, and either would work imo. This ain't bad, but the sound quality and some detracting hobokaisms would need some fixing if it is to pass, that's my guess. It suffers some mechanicalness, but I'll just assume that's yet to be dealt with.

Bye bye laid-back attitude and not having deadline. Hello deadlines. I want to hear something _new_ from everyone by February 20th. Repeat: WiP DEADLINE FEBRUARY 20th 2010

Because albums take time to make and gnerally need more than one remixer with time skill and interest. I'd probably join a MP project tho, once I'd get some other project stuff out of the way.

There, now at 15 for this year. edit: just so I remember, I'm at 20 now.

OCR01714 - Super Dodge Ball "All-Star Doskpop"
Rozovian replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Yup, I hear the demoscene sound here, and I like it. What happens at 2:53 is classic. There's a lot of cool stuff happening in the abckground of this one, obscured by the lead melody. Listen past it for some more remix goodness. I'm hearing something resembling my high-resonance noise-based shaker back there, among other things. On first listen, I basically just heard lead, drums, and bass, but there's much more to it. On related note, it took me until a few weeks ago to get the Bad Dudes' free albums. Shame on me. -
OCR01944 - Super Mario Galaxy "Meteorites and Rabbits"
Rozovian replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Appropriate for the source, beautiful track. Has a bit of an old record feel to it, all that's missing is the reduced sound quality and the noise. SMG has some great music, this track represents the soundtrack well. -
About time I caught up with reviewing your stuff, Will. Now you have to get more posted. I remember this one from way back, and liked it then. I also remember commenting your your kick drum fills coming in at the wrong times and THEY STILL DO! At least some of them, in the intro. Overall, this is as your stuff usually is, Great synth writing, retro sound. The use of strings and piano gives it a different vibe from your usual stuff, which the source naturally contributes to as well. Not a bad thing.

OCR01925 - Knuckles' Chaotix "Door into Chaotix"
Rozovian replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
About time I commented on this one. This is a nice contrast to Redifer's take on the same source. Yours has more of a playful vibe to it. The synth work is as it usually is, melodies normal, sound typical, etc... Typical WillRock... it rocks. Yeah, I know, very origina of me. -
OCR01949 - Panzer Dragoon II Zwei "Lagi's Takeoff"
Rozovian replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Really cool, mysterious sound to it. Transitions could be more accentuated, they feel a little boxy now, but that's a minor gripe, as is that it feels a little like it feels a bit monotonous in its chord writing. Not detractively so, and it may well be contributing to the mysterious feel. Overall, nice work. -
The "guitar" should have been better, both it and the piano should have been more humanized, but the rest of the track is okay for '02. Has a cool groove, which seems to be the remixer's forte (judging from this and his other mix on the site). Would be cool to hear how a 2010 Double A-Ron remix would sound.

OCR00887 - Lufia II "Christmas in the Village (Silver Bells)"
Rozovian replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Appropriate for the time of year, someone should make a playlist with all winter/xmas-y remixes, and share it. This is an excellent winter holiday remix with church bells, a hint of xmas carols, end (and/or end credits) music to a winter movie and all that. Perfect for this time of year. -
OCR00624 - Zillion "Melodic Trance"
Rozovian replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
I need to make a list of things I gotta learn from different remixes; this one has a great 80's sound I wanna do too. it's not without it's flaws, but I've got no problem overlooking those to enjoy the time back when hair was bigger. I'd probably like this better without the trance saws, tho. -
OCR01955 - Secret of Mana "Sea/Sky"
Rozovian replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Soft groove. Reverse stuff. The chord rhythm brings Palpable's Fly to mind. Filtered piano. A sense of radio effects (as mentioned by previous reviewers). Mana music. What's not to like? -
OCR01953 - Mega Man "Cut Man's Lullaby"
Rozovian replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Too new for me to have digested it yet, but I'm feeling the old west vibe. This brings up a lot of weird images of my least favorite parts of movies, the sad parts where the girl has gone off with another guy, or you just lost your job, your home, and your dog; or when you return home to find the house empty and nobody there; or when you're hitchhiking in the rain in the middle of nowhere and nobody stops... or even comes by. Well done capturing an emotion I try to avoid. I am so not listening to this ever again. -
OCR00381 - Super Metroid "Norfair Deathmarch"
Rozovian replied to Saunders's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
One of the first mixes I got from ocr, so this became the definitive version of lower Norfair for me. Has a sense of impending doom or unspeakable evil or whatever else you can think of. Its name says it best, it's a deathmarch, and an awesome on at that. -
OCR01504 - Final Fantasy Adventure "Chocobo!"
Rozovian replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Definitely a fun remix, but what else can you do with a source like this? Great percussion writing here, there's some really cool rhythms in there. Awesome bass writing. Only criticism I can think of would be the transitions between A and B parts, but that's not a big deal. Especially with all the other stuff that's happening here. Typical BGC stuff, a lot of stuff going on, and everything has its own space. Ends a bit suddenly, but you gotta love that chirp with delay. edit 12-22-09: What, I reviewed this a few weeks ago and didn't then realize this is my new single favorite mix? Crazy fun stuff, despite the painful chirps (on headphones at least). Love the bass and rhythms. Awesome stuff. -
OCR01522 - Mega Man X "Light in the Fortress"
Rozovian replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
MMX remixes were among the first I downloaded when I really discovered ocremix, so this one's been on my ipod for quite a while. Feels like an updated version of the source, the way it ought to be. Gotta love the 1:45 breakdown. great how the Dr. Light source fits in too. Intro and outro could, interestingly, be my favorite parts of it tho, those just have so much atmosphere to them, atmosphere and force. -
OCR00489 - Sonic 3D Blast (SAT) "Snow"
Rozovian replied to Ginnsu's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Definitely a winter mix. Some really cool key changes here, dunno if it's from source or a remix addition, but I like them. Production ain't shiny, but the mix's got a groove and a nice sound. And key changes. -
OCR00517 - Knuckles' Chaotix "Door into Summer"
Rozovian replied to orkybash's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
It is fun to hear this version after I've heard WillRock's, kind'a the same henomenon as with Palp's and djp's different takes on Oedo Village. This version seems stuck between loud and not, with some instruments fitting into something more lively, some into something more mellow, so the result is a mix that might be a bit difficult to appreciate. it hits a fairly mellow gear towards the end, which is nice. The hihat bothers me, tho. -
Well for chiptunes, you'd probably be best off with a tracker. PlayerPro is one. It's got VST support and all kinds of features you don't need for making oldskool chiptunes, but if you don't use those and stick to a limited number of channels and simple waveforms you should be fine with it. Alternatively, you can get the Magical 8 Bit Plugin or Chip 32 and do the chiptune in GB, but you'll be missing out on all the cool sample-specific effects that trackers (like PPro, as opposed to DAWs like GB) excel at. It'll be less authentic, but i dunno if there are any old chip trackers for mac. Whatever you do, be on the lookout for free resources, use google a lot, read and listen to guides and tutorials, compare your music to al kinds of music you come across, remember that you probably suck, always try to understand all feedback even if you don't agree with it, and most importantly: have fun. Also, come hang out at the Workshop forum here on ocr. If you have quesions, ask; read the threads, show us your work, etc. Welcome to ocr.
