If you're using FL, the method that Skryp and Neblix mentioned works fantastically. I use it a LOT myself. Great for adding a bit of pseudo-humanization to a piano lick or something.

I lol'd. GTA: Don't worry, when I actually get down to making a mix, I get it done in a couple days at most, generally speaking. I work quickly, once inspiration hits. You can ask Emunator to verify this, if you must, and I'm pretty sure Hylian knows I'll get my work done on his project, too. Bear in mind that I (and a bunch of other people, I suspect) am finishing up a grueling semester of college in which I had the misfortune to take 17 credit hours and am almost-failing one very tough class. I also work part-time, am about to start a full-time summer internship, and have lots of other "life" duties as well. Cut me a bit of slack. Also, do consider this--I'm prioritizing projects in order of when deadlines hit, and the Oracle project still has a lot of deadline left. Bear this in mind as well--I'm not totally devoted to OCR, music-wise. I have other projects. Some of them I get paid for, and some of them have much tighter deadlines. OCR is a hobby that I happen to be really good at. My post urging everyone to hurry was meant to be in good fun, hence the ":-D" at the end, as well as the prominent use of the word "y'all." I'm a bit surprised that someone who's not even a project artist, let alone director, is calling me out for not working on music that is entirely voluntary (and which I still have every intention of completing). tl;dr I'm cranky because I have too many finals and some guy who doesn't make music is calling me out for something I didn't do. Also, Brandon is funny.

Y'all (and by "y'all" I mean "y'all who haven't finished yer tracks) need to get yer butts in gear. I wanna be able to have this project mastered by the time I have to go back to school! With the way summer flies by, you'd better just be safe and finish up NOW.

I'm planning on doing a couple remixes eventually, since Rayman (a) was my first game I ever really played seriously and ( I love the soundtrack too! We'll see if I ever get around to such a thing, but believe you me--I want to see more Rayman remixes too!

This probably isn't quite what you're looking for, but about 5 miles from the ASU main campus is the school I graduated from, the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences. It's a place that specializes in audio engineering and recording--the technical side, not the musical side. Now, as a graduate, I can say that it was one of the best things that happened to me as a producer/engineer/musician, but it's not for everyone. They do include sections on video game audio, music business law (contracts 'n such), and digital recording, but they're also VERY focused on studio recording for the most part. As a sidenote, GO DEVILS!

Been digging this mix ever since it was released on Bandcamp. This is what I show my friends when they ask me "what's dubstep?"

I'd vote for style three, personally. Pixelized 8-bit has been done to DEATH, and if you're not gonna do the JRPG style (the sample you chose looks pretty even by today's standards, I'd love to see something that beautiful get pulled off) then that's my other favorite. Don't make it just a total rip-off of everything else that's been done before, graphics-wise.

This album has one of the highest average standards of quality across each song that I've ever heard on an OCR album. Granted, the sample size (under twenty songs as opposed to over fifty) is a lot smaller than some albums I've heard, too, but kudos to all involved--it's an album to be proud of!

Oddly enough, I'm just the opposite. I'm first a producer and engineer, second a musician, and this tends to show in my tastes. I can't listen to a song if it's recorded/mixed poorly--I just can't look past the production errors.

I think someone earlier hit the nail on the head, in saying that "if it fits your artistic vision, go for it, but if not, you got problems." That's pretty much how I feel--if a patch doesn't fit what you're doing, don't force the issue. On the other hand, I've been inspired to create certain songs by a single loop or patch which I then elaborated on, and I'm pretty sure my "artistic vision" was only helped by the existence of the patch/loop. The difference between the synthesizer users and the analog instrumentalists is that synth users are inherently given far more options. I guess I just feel like it's a shame to waste those options--mastery of your instrument includes knowing how to make it sound how YOU want it to sound, and you're not using your instrument to its fullest potential if you're stuck with presets.

This sums up my feelings almost exactly. I see nothing wrong with using your resources, provided you use them in a creative manner, but the totally preset-laden generic rap beat or "techno" song really annoys me. Don't even get me started on the Black Eyed Peas, haha.
