  1. That's a fine point to make, but you're making a logical misstep in thinking it is a refutation of my argument. In fact your fallacy is so common there's a name for it. The OP only asked about computers, so I only made claims about that. Buying a cheap PC to have money in the short-term for other equipment is a defensible argument, but it does not address my claims regarding what sorts of computers maintain their value and such -- which I why I felt no need to respond the first time you brought it up. (Yes, I do actually read your posts before responding to them, so please stop repeating yourself...) cheers.
  2. Sorry to get your hopes up, I was not agreeing with you. The last line in my post was ambiguous, my apologies. All things being equal, I would agree with you. But the choices are not equal. So whether he'd be better off is not a call you can make. I don't want to get into a superfluous discussion about inflation in this thread, so I'll just give that to you: fair point but weak argument.
  3. Yes it does. And I know from experience. I've tried to sell old desktop PCs I've built -- it's difficult. I usually end up giving them away or they sit in my closet for a few years before I throw them out. Maybe that sounds familiar? Now, old mac laptops... as long as they aren't broken or too old can go for half what I paid for them. So even if I spent half as much on a desktop PC, I still end up with the same amount of cash in my pocket in the long run. And I get to have a nicer computer, imo.
  4. it doesn't? We had a discussion about this a while back. You can configure Logic's piano roll to behave almost identically to FL's (if you like that sort of thing...). The negligible differences being, well, negligible. Definitely not a deal-breaker for the OP considering how general his questions are.
  5. You can upgrade the basics in any laptop.. RAM / harddrive. The OP's question was general, so I gave a general opinion. If the OP already knew how to build PCs I doubt he'd have made this thread. However I don't think building PCs yourself is worth it either --and I've put together everything from 486s onward. These days I just want to get work done and not having to mess with the internal hardware is worth the short-term premium. cheers.
  6. Consider: - Macs hold value longer than PCs. - Laptops hold value longer than Desktops. When it comes time to upgrade in a couple years you'll be able to sell your older MacBook for a decent amount, but your desktop PC will be a disposable item. My point is don't go the PC or desktop route to save money; you won't in the long run.
  7. I used to have a pool of unfinished music that I was planning on writing lyrics for and adding vocals. It took years, but eventually I accepted that I can't write lyrics or sing -- except for the rare olremix. These days all the ideas I have are just sitting in my head, nothing written down that isn't finished at the moment. Anyway, inspiration is a common problem. I've read two solutions in songwriting books or from interviews with songwriters: 1) Keep writing. Even if it sucks, just write something. When your inspiration comes back either you'll fix what you wrote so that it doesn't suck or you'll scrap it and write something else. Just remember: Once you put a note down, it's not permanent. 2) Don't stop to tweak once you start writing. If you stop to make minor adjustments to levels, effects and synths while you're still laying parts down you're going to fatigue your inspiration rather quickly. Do it before you start laying down parts, or better yet save it for later. cheers.
  8. A capital C and ending with a comma? Far too sophisticated to be my work. But to try and contribute to the topic: Deamhost is best deal around in terms of bandwidth and disk-space, so if that's the priority then I recommend them. I'm no longer a customer because my priority is application and database support. But their support is generally good enough for typical php/mysql fodder. cheers.
  9. you guys pat yourselves on the back, you beat ORC and OHC for the most active round on compo:TS cheers
  10. You can load sf2 Soundfont files into Logic's EXS sampler. And there are plenty of free soundfonts online, check the links at the bottom of our links page. Also, read Logic's manual and/or be prepared to search online. I have a gut feeling you're going to come back with a potentially stupid question that you could easily answer yourself.
  11. I don't have the aforementioned plugin but I don't think it does what the OP is/was looking for. I had an analogue clipper that would do it. Most sounds just came out like a dull distortion, but there were interesting things you could do to control voltages. The clipper module in Reaktor will do this as well. It would be really trivial to code a VST effect for this. But again, not the most useful effect. cheers.
  12. Not every DAW has multiband processors, FFTs, amp/room simulation, but the rest are staples that are built into your software. And the DAW softwares you mentioned will yield professional results. You really only need to go third-party if you're looking for a specific kind of sound. Say you want a vintage compressor sound on your drums, or Lexicon-sounding reverb on your mix... then you have something to ask advice on. cheers.
  13. a) You're not very good at lurking. The whole point is it was not a "mere misinterpretation". It was a case of not reading the entire post, which is poor etiquette and a pet peeve of mine. Another cliché, "nerdrage." I've been quite level about this. I called Lunahorum a twit but he claims he was trying to "get a rise out of" me, if that's the case then I have been victimized. c) I work from home and I'm sick. Unfortunately, I can make time for this discussion. d) Notice the banter only comes after I helped the OP and answered his question. I'm not interfering with the topic. Criticize me as you like, but I offered something of value to this forum. So far, you have still offered nothing of value.
  14. oh wow, a post in PPR; you sure have the high ground. So do you have anything to offer to the Remixing forum other than xkcd clichés? anyway, the OP got his questioned answer on the first page. any mods out there? cheers.
  15. And the censuring of my "bad mood" behavior? Was all that just insincere fodder to get a rise out of me? Or are you that big of a hypocrite? I really want to believe you were being a dick the whole time, but it appears more likely you're just a twit.
  16. And then you claim, by example, that Drack's misinterpretation is logical and "bound to happen". So I reply with... ... in order to demonstrate that you are wrong to apologize for Drack, since there was only one logical way to interpret my post had it been read from beginning to end. Then you come in completely oblivious to this point and make the same mistake Drack does and assume I don't know what I'm talking about. Understandably, I find this repeated chain of events frustrating. So I call you a twit. Of course there is. I'm not going to coddle you like a child. If you do something stupid I'm going to call you on it. I'm going to negatively reinforce your behavior in hopes that you'll be more mindful not to make the same mistake in the future. I'm going hold you responsible for what you say whether you like it or not. cheers.
  17. oh! I just realized you're the guy formerly known as maxZipcode. I had been wondering why you're such a twit, now it all makes sense. anyway, glad to help, cheers.
  18. sort of like explaining the difference between multiplication and addition by using 2 and 2 as an example. There's bound to be some confusion. Ah but for that misinterpretation to be reasonable you would have to have not read, not understood or just plain ignored the part where I referred to a 200/300 pair as representing a perfect fifth. If I thought a 100hz difference was equal to an octave, then the difference of 200 and 300 certainly wouldn't be a fifth! Does the excuse have an excuse?
  19. My thinking is the additional harmonics are only audible as a psychoacoustic effect without distortion. I would liken it to distorting a single sine wave: you get a bunch of odd-ordered harmonics as the waveform becomes more square-like when flattened. As the waveform of two sine waves gets flattened, the phantom 'difference' oscillation gets squeezed into existence.
  20. Drack, was there anything in my post to even suggest a linear relationship between pitch and frequency? I'll give you the answer: No there was not. So instead of jumping to the conclusion that I don't know what I'm talking about and therefore I'm wrong regarding 'difference', why don't you try to actually do some research for yourself? In fact I'll give you a hand, start by looking up 'difference tones'. Let me know how it goes.
  21. IIRC this is determined by the difference of the frequencies. If you have a 200hz sine and a 300hz sine, that's a perfect fifth. Their difference is 100hz, which is an octave below the tonic. make sense?
  22. Larry pretty much has it right: I went to Hemo's place a few times and laid down some chords with lead lines and he'd run with it. Rather impressive he was able to take my disjointed noodlings and turn them into a cohesive piece of music that flows. All the transitions, counter-melodies, walking bass and additional arrangement were conceived with almost no direction from myself and yet it all fits like a glove. cheers to Hemo for putting this together. or something indeed... Hemo came up with the analoqistic title, I wanted to call it Mica's Dirty Knickers I think it's more akin to my visage appearing on a grilled cheese sandwich (delicious!) rather than say a Second Coming.
  23. Rozovian already mentioned combo, but the mda effects in general have been a staple of mine for years since they're free, cross-platform and quite useful. Aside from Logic's internal effects and hardware analogue effects, I use Reaktor to build my own custom effects that I can just plug right in. good times.
