Tropes vs. Women / #GamerGate Conspiracies
Gario replied to Brandon Strader's topic in General Discussion
From what I gather, the reason people continue to bring up such things is because rather than trying to justify it's existence they're simply explaining why they feel it exists, in the first place. If you thought that it was a problem, and you believed something biological caused it, wouldn't it make sense to first acknowledge what you feel the problem is? Right or wrong, DjP simply wants to point to what he feels is the underlying problem (that is, it's biological/evolutionary) - that doesn't imply that he feels that it's therefore perfectly fine. In fact... I would say this statement pretty much confirms that he doesn't think (or even imply) that it's "okay". On another note, there is one role that is based solely on gender that biology is responsible for - giving birth to a child - that is not 'sexist' to assume is solely for a woman. The idea that this role could possibly affect how women have evolved over time (and thus became physically less suited to certain tasks due, for example, to how the hips had to shape for this purpose) does have some objective (i.e. not sexist) logic to it... though it admittedly doesn't affect the DiD trope very much, imo, so perhaps it could be saved for another part of the Anita series. It'd be just as silly to deny that women are very different from men in a biological sense as it would to say that women should be subservient to men (because nature), even if the former would potentially undermine the idea that women are considered equal to men in every way. Both statements are simply untrue, and to base an opinion on either would hurt your stance. -
Alright, I'm about to send my mix -

OCR02712 - Super Metroid "Shinesparks"
Gario replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Holy shit, it's... SHINESPARKS! I literally dropped everything that I was doing in order to give this legendary track a listen. *Ahem* Very nice and different interpretation of the theme that everyone knows so well. The instrument combination is great, and it's smooth as all hell - I can see why it was on the 'conditional posting' list for so long, as I wouldn't want to downright reject it, either. I would be very happy if Nathan knew that his music was finally posted, and was encouraged to produce more awesome musics for the site! -
Holy shit, Moses was gonna fuck those kids up. Just sayin'.

As a very large fan of the series, I really hope for the best. Being available on a mobile platform doesn't kill it for me right away (unless it's Square Enix, in which case their track record dooms them to failure), so I'll keep my ear out on how this develops.

Tropes vs. Women / #GamerGate Conspiracies
Gario replied to Brandon Strader's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, going to have to agree that her attack on Spelunky is a bit overzealous. The ability to gender/species swap the 'damsel' actually should show just how unimportant the gender (or even species, if that kind of thing bothers you) actually is, in the context of the game. The very option completely deconstructs the context of the damsel trope by making the gender irrelevant. You could argue that making the woman the first choice still makes her the most obvious one and argue some discrimination from there. Her to claim that it compares women to dogs is ludicrous and nonsensical, though, considering it compares the man to a dog, too - he's yet another option for the damsel. -
It's a nice sentiment from a few posters here, but I disagree that you can't get a good idea of how much you like a track without listening from start to finish. I can give something a quick listen (only covering ~15% of it in that time) and have a very good idea of what style, structure and production values the track has. I wouldn't just listen to the beginning, though - I skip around, listen to short segments at a time, hold the track down when something different and interesting catches my ear and judge from there. I don't think I'm disrespecting any artist by doing this.
-
Not going to lie, it's kind of how I review tracks (though I skip around to listen to the arrangement aspect of it - not just the first thirty seconds). You'd be surprised how much you can surmise from a short viewing of a track, actually.

Tropes vs. Women / #GamerGate Conspiracies
Gario replied to Brandon Strader's topic in General Discussion
Ouch, man, right in the heart you strike. I'm saying she's posting standard methods of playing through a game - nothing spectacular or special. If there was something special about the videos that she were posting (speedruns, glitching/hacking, mods, creations in a game, etc. - something to make it stand out from normal play) then I'd say she really would need to give credit where it was due, but just playing a game, or even just showing cutscenes from another video... No, that's not 'creative input', that's playing through the design of the game. I think you're hanging a little too much on the romantic notion of 'creative input' - not every little thing that we do on video games should be seen as creative, else we hang ourselves up on minute details like this. I love Megaman 3, but I don't consider myself an artist for moving him forward and jumping - at best, I see myself as solving a problem that the designers provided for me. That's not very creative, in my book. -

If she's using other people's ripped footage that doesn't necessarily mean that she hasn't played the games before. As the Coop said, we can't just assume that because she decided to post other people's playthroughs that she didn't play the games herself. Also, using other people's ripped footage without crediting them is perfectly fine because it's technically not theirs to put on YT in the first place (it's the developers/publishers material), and she does give proper credit as to what games she's posting on her videos. It's nothing like posting material that another user has created, as an average playthrough of a game has virtually no creative input from the original poster - not even creative commons can apply to something like this. I'd rather complain about long waits between videos - when do y'all suspect she'll be done with video #3? -
If you need help with that, I'm down with giving some help in that area. Also, yay, moon.

Heads up/Red Alert: YOUR PASSWORDS ARE AT RISK!
Gario replied to Hyperion5182's topic in General Discussion
If I start acting batshit crazy on the forums then y'all know that my passwords were taken by the government and they're hacking my account. Just giving the heads up. -
Amazing, and with one of my favorite MM tunes, no less.

Aww, DS, don't be hatin' on outsourcin'

... I actually kind of like all three versions, for what they are. The original is funktastic, the Daft Punk version has some sexy vocoded robovoice that I can't hate, and to be honest there are some neat harmonies that Kanye spices things up with, and he breaks up the samples in some interesting ways, to boot. If you ignore that it's Kanye, it's not THAT bad.
-
Nope, not even close - that whole "original audio" is pretty much the entirety of sampling, and unlike covers/arrangements, songs using sampling can be completely different from the source(s). Anyway, if the samples really make something new and interesting, I'm all for it. Something like is a very good use of sampling, imho.(For you non-pony folks, here's an alternative, but the arrangement quality isn't as good) For an example of something that's just no good, . No credit to the source, virtually untouched (just sings over the source).

I would have to argue that, while butt is funny, the word 'poop' holds the current title of being the funniest word in any language.

Double post: Also noticed that they revamped FFTA in the same manner just a few days ago. FFTA: X I'd love to try that out... though I think it'd wipe the floor with my face since I'm not nearly as familiar with the original game, lol. Thought it might be relevant.

finished Mega Man II - Dr Wily´s Castle (Rock Arrangement)
Gario replied to Luis Sáenz's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
jnwake has a very good grasp on the issues of this track - the instruments in the background were noticeably fake sounding, and the panning was odd for them. If you want to pan them, take a look at an orchestra layout and pan them according to that - it'll help create the illusion that it's really there. Other than that, though, I felt this is one of your stronger covers/arrangements. It's liberal, but I felt the liberties taken in this one were more symbiotic and natural than in other covers you've posted here - if not for the sample/panning issues I would actually say this one would have a good shot on the panel, if you wanted to post it on this site. Keep up the awesome work, man - I'm enjoying these arrangements quite a bit. -
Aw shit, I saw my oldest brother play that fight twice. Once solo with his super-beefed-out-knight-calculator-100%-evade-from-three-sides character (which he met a horrible demise) and another with that character and a black mage. It was amazing to watch, actually. In all seriousness, this is the kind of game my brothers and sister would love - they all learned not only how to grind, but all the deep mechanics that were involved (like alignment matching in fights and in team building, the whole reflect shenanigans, actually making use of the mime class, etc.) so they could beat the game as efficiently as possible, as under-level'd as possible. Once you learn all of that, a game like this one really makes one take full advantage of all of those things in order to survive. I can see people being upset about the difficulty of the whole thing, but from what I read into it there is a certain amount of balance that went into this patch, too - it's hard, but it's not blindly punishingly hard; if you know the mechanics well enough then there's always a decent solution to the difficulty.

OCR02697 - Final Fantasy VI "There Will Be Blood"
Gario replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
God, it's just not an Anti-syne song without awesome electrovoices in it, and it's always a thing of beauty. I feel it is a touch repetitive, but the soundscape is gold, and it really pounds the hell out of my eardrums (in a good way). Glitchy and awesome, just the way I like it. -
finished Final Fantasy iv Boss Battle Arrangement
Gario replied to Luis Sáenz's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
This is an awesome mix, here. I completely understand that this isn't a track submitted to OCR (is it?), but even disregarding that I would've loved to hear some connection to the source in the middle liberal section. Again disregarding the site, it's very good compositional practice to incorporate previous elements of a track into seemingly unrelated portions. It keeps the listener on track, makes the piece more coherent, and it gives solid practice to manipulating motifs and such for any original music you may create. Again, this is a great track, and I'd recommend people listen to it regardless. Just consider using at least textures and background elements in your more liberal sections next time so it sounds more connected with the source. -
Sounds like the "and Change" portion of your name finally took effect.

finished "Romance of the Two Worlds" - Ni no Kuni World Map
Gario replied to Neifion's topic in Post Your Game ReMixes!
I am very sorry for my late Mod review - you requested it and I didn't deliver in a timely manner. MOD REVIEW: This is a very beautiful rendition of the source - I especially love the violin in this. It kind of reminds me of Avatar: The Last Airbender, which had a great soundtrack. I don't know what else to say that Rozo hasn't covered, though I don't think the issues he mentioned are nearly enough to nail you on the panel. Still might be worth taking a look into, though, to be safe. Yeah, I think if you sub'd this you'd be in great shape. Nice work on it!
