OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues
djpretzel replied to Liontamer's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
It was more distinguishable that way, granted, but I prefer this antialiased, headphones-only version. We didn't take them away, they're still there for mixes that are also available on Last.fm, we just need to update our last.fm library. I was gonna wait till OCR01700 but I should probably go ahead and do that soon. -
Moved to newbies; our submission standards and instructions explain the delay: http://www.ocremix.org/info/Submission_Standards_and_Instructions We've got a manual posting process, for better or worse, and we like to give pieces some time in the sun. Furthermore, if we posted immediately, you'd have some days with nothing, other days with potentially seven. The manual nature of the queue allows us to time things appropriately, spread things out, ensure a degree of variety, etc.

I'm basically down to my two boring mainstays for the last... 5 years: Naruto and Gundam. However, Naruto's pretty hot right now, and Gundam 00 has some redeeming qualities and is an interesting departure in some ways from the SEED series, the second of which (Destiny) had a "main" character that was completely dismissable and uninteresting...

OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues
djpretzel replied to Liontamer's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
Nah; used to be a lot dirtier. vBulletin dirties it up a bit, and there are still many things that could be refactored and may be redundant, but it's better than it's ever been. I added min-width to our main content div so it doesn't smush into chaos as readily today, among other things. -
AnSo da man; keep doin' what you're doin', and someday we'll catch up

OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues
djpretzel replied to Liontamer's topic in Site Issues & Feedback
I'm reworking the underlying database for storing emulators, so right now is a bad time to add a lot of stuff since the relationships/structure are in flux. In other news... I added some wording to the two areas Linearity pointed out as being problematic. I also: extended the minimized headers to the homepage rewrote the homepage statement (more generic, perhaps, but I prefer it) added the same icons used in our drop-down menus to the new headers mucked about with the site's CSS a bit in ways you probably don't care about added system icons to composer profile pages (shiny!) remembered to breath -
OverClocked ReMix Design ?'s and Issues

Good point; I'll try to reword. Of course, some users are so... casual... that nothing I can do will prevent the misunderstanding, but it's a valid concern and should be addressed as much as possible. Thanks! Also, AnSo - emulator links are broked. I'll fix them for you, but you owe me a sandwich -
Nice. God bless Firefox; thanks for sharing, I've got a few plugs that I swear by but hadn't seen these. Simple, but useful.

Our friends over at SquareSound are holding an arrangement competition in tribute to Final Fantasy musical legend Nobuo Uematsu. The winner will receive two VIP tickets to the upcoming Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy concert in Chicago on March 1, 2008. The VIP tickets include prime seats at the concert, a free concert CD and program, and the ability to attend an exclusive meet-and-greet session with Mr. Uematsu himself following the performance. OverClocked ReMix has donated copies of Final Fantasy VII: Voices of the Lifestream as prizes, and head submissions evaluator Larry "Liontamer" Oji will be assisting with submissions evaluations. In order to qualify, entrants must submit their own unique arrangement of any of Mr. Uematsu’s compositions. Registration for this competition is open until Tuesday, January 22nd and the finished arrangement must be submitted by February 8th. For more details and to get registered, please visit SquareSound’s Competition Page.

Today we implemented new system profiles to go with the revised composer profiles previously implemented. One of the more interesting features is filtering composers by system, which previously was not available. We'll be working on expanding our emulator list, since it's woefully inadequate, but at any rate, the same list of ReMixes that was available previously is still available, plus now there's a lot more good stuff e.g.: http://www.ocremix.org/system/snes/ http://www.ocremix.org/system/snes/composers/ http://www.ocremix.org/system/snes/emulators/ http://www.ocremix.org/system/snes/games/ http://www.ocremix.org/system/snes/remixes/ [*]http://www.ocremix.org/system/c64/ [*]http://www.ocremix.org/system/gen/

Thanks; this was a lot of work. I just overhauled the layout and added a screenshot for the most recent mix.

Plenty of artists that also contribute to other sites have been involved with OCR projects and those other sites didn't do much to promote those albums... I'm not sure what the expectation is on your part but it seems a little unequal and also premature, especially given Snapple's most recent comments... My point is simply that releasing an album as an OCR project shouldn't jeopardize the "all-inclusiveness" you mention, plus there's benefits, so why not?
-
Yeah, I re-read his latest comment... makes sense. However, I'd worry about cross-posting across three communities, etc. and managing things... the sooner some of these types of decisions are made, the smoother things can work, imo. But first things first; sorry for the tangent!

Because we have finite time and resources and usually choose to focus them on stuff that is close to the site... If it's an official album it gets integrated into our database, mixer profiles (eventually), torrent tracker, etc. We do some limited PR stuff for album releases... it's not only awkward, but basically inappropriate, for us to be doing that on behalf of a third-party... If there's no good reason it shouldn't be an OCR project, you're arguing that even if people don't want it to be (for "bad" reasons e.g. we smell), we should still treat it the same...right? That just doesn't make much sense to me... I get your point, but it's a cause and effect thing, and the cause is important... also, wasn't saying we wouldn't pimp it at all or ignore it or whatever, just that it wouldn't be to the same degree... Oh, totally - agreed. The quote from the developer in Nintendo Power was ironic, as well. But... well, so what? It's ironic. There are worse things to be.
-
Sounds cool, but... why not an OCR project? Is there something mutually exclusive with making it an OCR project and involving other sites? Just noting ahead of time, not to be a dick or anything, but we're much more likely to pimp it, etc. when it's an official OCR thing, and you'll lose that, otherwise. If you've got a good answer other than "because they don't like us," I'd like to hear it... one of the developers from Contra 4 actually mentioned OCR in an interview with Nintendo Power, FYI - it'd be cool to see his quote become a reality. But, your call, and like I said, sounds interesting.
-
It certainly looks interesting, but I'm having a hard time from the YouTube video seeing the correspondence between the beats and the block collection... anyone else? Just me?

I spent most of the first half of my twenties inside on Friday and Saturday nights, with no steady ladyfriend... Oh wait, ENHANCED... jk; I can't scapegoat this site into what was essentially the effect of going to a commuter school, and I *did* buy my first house at age 20, which was a good investment. Plus, things have evened out now, and contrary to the prediction that "once djp gets a steady gf, ocremix will go down," the opposite has happily been true. Honestly, this site had a huge impact on my life. I'm sure some little bits here and there might have been negative, but overall there's so many positives that I'd need to write a novel... and I almost have: last year's State of the ReMix (or was it the year prior? I forget...) was essentially about how, in spite of some the sacrifices I've made, I see so much positive come out of the site that I've consciously decided to poor my heart and soul into it, and haven't regretted doing so. Word.

Plagiarism in Thieves of Fate project?

We're looking into it; until we get something definitive, I'm locking this topic to avoid speculation. -
As previewed at MAGFest, I just implemented our new VGM composer profiles. I think/hope you'll agree that they're vastly more informative (and extensible) than the previous "big list of remixes" we offered for each composer detail page (which is still available on a separate tab). I'll use Sakuraba as an example: http://www.ocremix.org/composer/id/40/motoi-sakuraba/ << main profile http://www.ocremix.org/composer/id/40/motoi-sakuraba/games/ << sortable list of games http://www.ocremix.org/composer/id/40/motoi-sakuraba/remixes/ << sortable list of remixes Two of the features I really find useful that I developed were the distinct list of systems and publishers on a per composer basis - this lets you easily see which composers worked for which companies on which systems, without having to review the entire list. Of course, as our game database grows with each new ReMix, this information will become more complete, but even so, it's already pretty useful as is. In addition, Larry and I have done a lot of work linking composers to more authoritative sources of information like moby, imdb, wiki, musicbrainz, etc., so hopefully you'll find that information valuable in finding out more about a given VGM composer. This is our first substantial site improvement in 2008, but it'll be the first of many, guaranteed. Please post any issues/questions/feedback here. Thanks, David Lloyd

Next holiday season would definitely be appreciated, but it works just as well during the year - if you know anyone planning large purchases from Amazon or Zzounds, steering them our way would really help!
