  2. Got another one for you to look at. ReMixer name: Darangen Real Name: Michael Boyd Email: darangen@hotmail.com Name of Game: Chrono Trigger Individual song: Ocean Palace Comments: There is a monthly live remix competition, the Dwelling of Duels, that I entered in. This was my submission for the september contest. It covers the Ocean Palace theme. Thanks for listening.
  3. Greetings! I am Sammo, aka Samuel J. Gabay, and this is my first time submitting a remix to this site. I have been composing music on sheet paper for some time, but I am relatively new at electronic music. The ReMix I am submitting is entitled Bramble Ramble. As the name implies, it is based on D. Wise's Brambles theme from Donkey Kong Country 2 for the SNES. It was written in FL Studio 4.52 using the program's included samples, the 3x Osc plugin, and the Sinfonia 3.6 soundfont. This is one of my favorite video games tunes, which (I hope) has translated into a tranquil, "chill"-type ReMix. My favorite part is the choir, which gives it that feel. The ReMix can be found at: I hope you like it! Regards, Sammo
  4. ReMixer Name: Red Omen Real Name: Ryan Walker Email: redomen@redomen.com Website: http://www.redomen.com Forum ID: 10619 I'm sure you have all of Protricity's information. Game ReMixed: Donkey Kong Country Name of Song: Bad Boss Boogie Comments: The ninth track for the DKC Arrangement Collaboration, Kong in Concert. I (Red Omen) originally signed up for this particular track, but my final product was too dull and muddy. Protricity cleaned it up and added several additional tracks, like some of the synths and percussion parts. The time signature for this song was amorphous at best. I spent ages listening to it, trying to discern what it was doing, but the percussion from the SPC file was too feeble to give me a clearly defined idea. The closest I could come up with was three bars of 4/4 and one of 5/8 per phrase, and used that until deciding to shift into straight 4/4 for variety's (and sanity's) sake. I'm a big fan of polyrhythms, but writing them myself and figuring them out from an ambiguous recording are worlds apart. ===== - Red Omen http://www.redomen.com

  6. Alright, looks like I get to be the bad guy. Not every mix can or should make it to a tiebreaker, where I get to execute my semi-vice-presidential status as the final vote. When one does, it's obvious there's a lot to like about a mix, but it's also clear there are some shortcomings. I essentially agree with the mix's advocates that the mix has strong production values, does a fair amount of instrumentation/adaptation (a step in the right direction for the ReMixer, who has already got the production side of the 'ReMix equation' down), and is catchy and chooses a well-suited genre. I also agree with the mix's critics that the piece is a bit repetitive, a bit bland, that while it does make some changes, the arrangement is still fairly close, and that the ending is lackluster. I don't have issues with this mix qualifying as what we call a 'ReMix' - I think it can safely fall under that umbrella. However, personally, I think the piece sounds a bit tentative, hesitant. It sounds like a ReMix waiting to happen. We certainly as a panel pass things that still have issues, but we're trying to do less of that and encourage more resubmissions for pieces that are 70-80% there... but not quite. In general, I feel like the mixer has done a better job with interpretation, but that the mix doesn't compare well to his other material in terms of execution. It's not as memorable as GY's other stuff, which you could play and then have in your head for the next hour. I feel like the structure, length, and changes made all seem slighter than they should be. None of these comments I'm making are 100% absolutes. They're just the best way I can articulate why I think the judges who voted no might have felt the way they did. Perhaps Gecko will disrespect the panel because we mistakenly called the mix techno, and henceforth disregard any constructive criticism, but I don't consider the mix representative of his best work, although the direction in adding a bit more interpretation is positive. Placing myself in his shoes, I don't know what I'd think about getting 6 yesses and 7 nos from the panel. Clearly, a good number felt the mix was ready for primetime, and a single vote could have swayed it. Not exactly a mandate that the mix ACTUALLY has any serious issues. And I don't think it DOES have *serious* issues - I just think it has enough significant flaws to not tiebreak towards posting it. I'm sure OCR listeners would enjoy it I'm sure there are mixes currently on the site that it compares (very) favorably to, and I'm sure that GY has talent and used it in the mix's construction. None of those truths, however, change my concurrence with the no votes that the mix has some issues that would be much better resolved before being added to the site. I hope that this very close vote serves as a source of encouragement rather than discouragement, and I'm a fan, regardless. No. Hopefully, the mixer can direct any frustration towards me, and not the panel. I'm also fairly sure a resubmission that took any number of the suggestions involved into account would be passed. In a perfect world, people would analyze panel decisions each in their own private sphere or vacuum, instead of comparing the decision to others, which to some may seem unfair or unequal in the criteria/standards used.
  7. Alright, let's track down zircon... Regarding the electronica/genre thing - my take would be that very few people on the planet Earth can reliably, unquestionably, and correctly label every last sub-genre of electronica (or whatever you want to call it). If the panel's respect and reputation hinge on us being able to truly tell the difference between techno, house, garage, two-step, jungle, d'n'b, happy hardcore, etc., etc., I think we should just give up now. In other words, we're bound to get this wrong. I know plenty of my write-ups do. I consider it a different issue from 'notation', as electronica genres are COMMONLY screwed up, inconsistent, etc., whereas personally I had NEVER seen the word notation being used it was. Aaron's very short, concise sentences sometimes make it seem like he MAY be condescending or trying to make someone look bad; I rarely interpret them as such myself. I think we should give people the benefit of the doubt. He's a pretty laid back guy, and I think his intentions here were good, if in my estimation potentially futile. I doubt that as he typed he laughed maniacally at how bad he was making anyone look. We can as a panel TRY to avoid using the wrong electronica labels and aim for internal consistency - I do think that's admirable - but since I've seen so many mistakes in the 'professional' world, I have to wonder how much respect a flub here or there will truly cause us. In summation: 1. benefit of the doubt is all-important 2. electronica genres are vague to begin with 3. I will tiebreak if zircon NOs 4. someone wake up zircon
  8. djpretzel, Here's my latest track, "Super Mario Kart - Racing Rainbow Road." 9. This was my submission for PRC 26. Mega Man 7- Shade Man. I heard someone else submit something with a shitty synthetic sax and everyone was like"That sounds really good" So i put this thing together and played a real sax. I only did a few takes of the sax part, and its mostly improv, but the melody and stuff are still there throughout the sax part. For the piano part and bass part, I took some of the main parts of the original and reworked the rythems and style, but kept the basic structuring the same. I thought this sounded ok, and a couple people seemed to like it, but I came in like 12th place or something with only 5 votes, and I got people pretty much flaming me on how bad it was. Not just saying stuff like "This doesnt sound good", they where saying stuff like "This sucks balls you asshole" I thought it was pretty original and creative, but several people seemed to hate it. I just dont see how they can flame me on how bad my song was, but give nothing but love for almost midi rips with repetative drum loops, random/cheesy sound effects, out of context vocals, and singing that makes Terminator's rap skills sound not too bad. It might have had something to do with the fact that I was an ass in the forums and was acting arrogant and saying mine was the best. After all, my file name was "My_sax_playing_is _superior_to_other_mixes.mp3" . Or it might be that my song really did sound as terrible as some said it was. But still, I did get at least 5 people that liked it and said it was pretty awsome, so its ok. Even if just 1 person likes the song, it was all worth it. At least it is a great improvment compared to my past submissions to both here and to vgmix. I really dont know if this is any good or not, half the people say "This is awsome", but the other half says "This sucks balls !!! This sounds like someone punching a cat!!!" (that was TO that said that. I would try to say something in response about how he sucks at wrighting music, but he didnt write any music for his submission; he chose instead to fill his with crappy talking and noises.) I cant get these tag things to work. I put them in, but when I upload to my webspace, they dont show up. 10. Your ReMixer name: Gecko Yamori Name of game(s) ReMixed: Sonic CD Your own comments about the mix, for example the inspiration behind it, how it was made, etc.: Had stuff both rejected and removed this year because they're too much like the originals. I took this to heart and tried something different with this mix. About 30% of the original is there, but without deviating from the style of the original too much. If you do that with Sonic CD (IMO), you take away the very essence that makes it stand out from other game music. Backup link (Without proper id3 tags): -- Gecko Yamori

  12. Remixer Names: Bladiator, TO Real Names: Karl Harmdierks, Lee Barber Remix Name: Clairvoyant Elegy Game: Final Doom Original: wormhole (E1L4) (Also called between the levels) Original MIDI: http://www.geocities.com/finaldoomremix/finalDtnt-betwee.mid Email: bladiator@juno.com, the_orichalcon@hotmail.com Hello Bladiator: When Lee asked me to add some piano to this track, I wasn't sure if he was asking the right person. Thankfully, his groove style and my new age style somehow locked together to make something we're both really proud of. This was an enjoyable collaboration. TO: I originally started this remix by request from the requests forums. It's from the wormhole level music in final doom (My second FD entry.) I'm not sure what genre you'd put this kind of music under, though we believe it fits under a groove/new age genre or even just chill music. It involves a completely rewritten drumline with some crisp drum sounds, heavy backing strings, belltones, synthstrings for the main melody and a bassline to kick the main section. I collab'ed with Bladiator to bring in his miraculous live-piano skills. Hope you guys like it, stay well, ~Bladiator & TO
  13. I'd like to explain the title of this song. I'm afraid it might exceed the character limit though. Recently you had a submission called Xexyz 'Exizk'. It kind of looks like an anagram, but it's not really. I thought it would be funny if I could come up with an anagram for: 'Akumajo Dracula Chronicle' and what I got was: Mucho Dollar Care a Junk CIA. [if this title is too long, the original title for this song was sandstorm, and you can use that instead]I loved the Akumajo Dracula Chronicle soundtrack for the X68000 and I hated the PSX Version. This will be my last submission in a while because I need to really beef up my practicing [i've been writing alot of remixes/originals so my practicing has been suffering]. It has been a pleasure! [Oh yeah... I almost forgot. Some more remixer information. My real Name {as Mr. Oji is well aware} is Samuel Ascher-Weiss and my user id number is 17819] [that takes you to a link for the ReMix as well as an mp3 of the original].
