Vampire Variations II - Now Available
djpretzel replied to Chernabogue's topic in General Discussion
http://kngi.org/vampirevariations/ website's back up, needs to be updated though... the people need their musics! Great job on another release; even with the technical difficulties today, it's all good since you know we'll be pimping it in the months (and mixes) to follow! -

Well, first off, even though I don't agree with the content of your post, thanks for starting the discussion, because I DO think it was a topic that needed to be hashed out. ALSO, thank you for your previous donations to the site. Donations have trailed off considerably in recent years, even BEFORE we launched the FF6 kickstarter, FYI. And heck, thanks for registering all the way back in 2003 and remaining active enough to post something ten years later, too. I'm disappointed you won't consider purchasing the album on the basis of not agreeing with it on principle, and that you consider this ONE foray into the world of commercial albums as "selling out". As to the spirit of what this site is about, you're partially correct, but only if you take this one album to an extreme conclusion - our Mission Statement reads: So if we stopped distributing free music (or great music ^^) to the world, you'd be absolutely correct - it would be against the spirit of the site. However, a SINGLE commercial album, especially one made in partnership with a game publisher like Capcom, is (however awesome it may be!) a drop in the bucket compared to 44 free albums, 2500+ free mixes, and 13+ years of countless unpaid staff time. I have made a massive, uncompensated sacrifice of time & energy to this community for over a decade - I don't expect that to make me instantly "right" or buy me sympathy points, but I do expect some benefit of the doubt & a fair measure of respect/trust. I'm not sure I'm getting either of those from you, based on your comments. As they say, respect is earned, and trust is earned, but... well, it's been me running the show the whole time, and I guess I thought we'd done a pretty decent job earning both of those. Here's another way of thinking about things: TONS of people use iTunes, some of them exclusively. Ditto for Spotify and many other streaming services, and Amazon, Google Play, etc. If we can't release a commercial album every once in awhile, we have no presence on these storefronts, which impedes our ability to promote VGM and deliver on the OTHER aspects of our mission. Just a thought - sometimes releasing exclusively free music is actually at odds with other aspects of our mission. Plenty = understatement Not better, just different Honestly, I don't want to send the message that BECAUSE this is our first commercial album, we consider it "better" than our 44 free arrangement albums. It isn't about that, and I think many of those albums... Balance & Ruin, for a recent example... exceed the quality of the majority of albums I've EVER purchased, personally. Quoting both points for agreement & emphasis! LOLz. As mentioned though, donations have trailed off. It's ironic, but past "Support OCR Month" fundraisers helped this site a LOT more than the FF6 kickstarter could, and probably more than this MM25 album ever will, from a financial perspective. And both FF6 & MM25 were a LOT more work, too. Oops? My business IS the site; the two are inextricable, and neither are motivated primarily by profit. All funds for OC ReMix are kept in separate bank accounts, and all ad revenue, album revenue (now that it exists), donations, etc. go directly into these dedicated accounts so that everything can be tracked. If you've got specific questions about this, let me know, but I don't appreciate insinuations that I've got a "business" that is in some way separate from the site itself and from which I directly profit. None of our albums in the works have any plans to be commercial, and it's something that would need to be clarified at the outset and would require a motivator like Capcom's involvement. Nevertheless, any threats to "fucking rage" in response to anything we ever choose to do won't really impact our decision-making process. We do want to make people happy, but walking on eggshells to avoid haters and those prone to knee-jerk, volatile reactions is both restrictive and generally a waste of time.

I want to be transparent, but it also worries me when people get too caught up in the money - that's the reason it's taken this long for us to do something like this, and while I'm responding to the legitimate curiosity in your question, I'm concerned & cautious when people start dissecting fiscal matters, as it's often a breeding ground for drama. That's my very strong disclaimer. Capcom gets a fair and relatively standard cut (can't say more, as per contract) OC ReMix gets 10% (goes to the site, and is used to cover promotion of the album as well) The remainder is being split up equally 25 ways by: Tracks x 21 - ReMixers on a per-track basis (even when multiple artists worked on a track, we pick a "primary" and they sort it out themselves) Support Staff x 3 - Shariq, Larry, and myself each get the same percentage as a single track for our respective roles as Director (Shariq) and Larry & I as Executive Producers Artwork x 1 - rnn, whose artwork counts the same as a single track We can talk about this here if there are a ton of follow-up questions specific to this topic, but it might get split to another thread depending on the scope.

Agreed that it's a cool idea & agreed that it should be separate from BA series & agreed that BA3 needs to happen... so many awesome villain themes still to be mixed!

At the very least, at the very, very, very least... a 700MB+ firmware update should have fixed the extraordinarily laggy system menus. The whole thing just feels glacial to me, and moving between two very rudimentary options screens shouldn't trigger ANY sort of loading/wait time whatsoever... Yes, games are more important, but I can't shake the feeling every time I use the system that it's just S....L........O...........W......................, and it affects my overall perception. No amount of fun menu music can compensate; I'd rather have COMPLETELY SILENT menus that actually function & respond... and I love music.

EVIL RETURNS with BadAss: Boss Themes: Volume II!! October 1, 2013 Contact: press@ocremix.org FAIRFAX, VA... EVIL RETURNS!! OverClocked ReMix today released its 43rd arrangement album, BadAss: Boss Themes: Volume II. Directors David L. Puga & Pieter "pu_freak" van Os returned for this second volume of face-melting tributes to villains gamers love to hate. The album features 12 artists producing 14 malicious & aggressive arrangements of boss themes from a wide variety of games in foreboding styles and genres including metal, dark ambient, electronica, and rock. BadAss: Volume II is available for free download at http://badass2.ocremix.org. This album series was made to show exactly how BadAss these antagonists are, and honor them with music befitting of their villainy. BadAss: Volume II was made by fans, for fans, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of the publishers or developers of the original games; all original compositions are copyright their respective owners. "As soon as we released Volume I, we went right to work on Volume II. The thing we wanted to do with this album was make it even meaner than the first; to make the hardest album on OCR yet," said album director David Puga, who now concludes his directoral duties with the BadAss series. "There will most likely be newer entries in the BA line, and I've no doubt they will be excellent. As for me, I couldn't have asked for a better album than this one here. Volume I had a few tracks that were meant as a respite from the onslaught of BadAssedness. You'll find none of that here, so abandon all hope... something something... OH! Abandon all hope, ye who enter here!" Twelve artists collaborated on musical tributes to some of gaming's biggest evildoers, including: Baby Bowser (Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island) Robot Bosses (Sonic & Knuckles) Teddy Bear (Splatterhouse 3) The Combine (Half-Life 2 & Half-Life 2: Episode Two) 0² (Kirby 64) Dr. Eggman (Sonic the Hedgehog 3) Ganondorf (Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time & A Link to the Past) Dr. Wily (Mega Man & Mega Man 3) The Dark Legion (Doom Troopers) The Syndicate (Streets of Rage 2) The Magi (RosenkreuzStilette) Ultimate Phalanx (Demon's Crest) The Great Mighty Poo (Conker's Bad Fur Day) Dr. Robotnik (Sonic the Hedgehog 2). BadAss: Volume II is OC ReMix's third album angled toward video game villains, and the second completely focused on the dark side of gaming history, continuing down the road paved by the first volume of BadAss released in 2011. "BadAss: Volume II is darker, grittier, and even more BadAss than the first volume was! The sometimes heroic vibe of the first volume is completely gone now. This is the darkest stuff you'll find on all of OCR!" said co-director Pieter van Os, who is also directing Volume III of the series. "As we did the first time around, David and I searched around to find the most twisted of artists to bring you the terror that is contained within BadAss 2. Ladies and gentlemen, from the deepest depths of hell, BadAss 2 will swallow you whole! Enjoy, but listen at your own risk…" About OverClocked ReMix Founded in 1999, OverClocked ReMix is an organization dedicated to the appreciation and promotion of video game music as an art form. "Moving on" from OC ReMix (split from BGC apology)
djpretzel replied to djpretzel's topic in General Discussion
Cool, glad to hear it. I'm personally frustrated/disappointed with the lack of change/development the site has seen this year, but the compensating factor is that we've posted a ton of great mixes, some amazing albums, and are wrapping up our FF6 Kickstarter. I'm really psyched about making some of these changes, and was discussing with Larry recently how we might just take a step back and start modifying the current site instead of waiting for the next version, which is somewhat dependent on our forum software. Hindsight is always 20/20, but in retrospect I think it was a mistake to focus so exclusively on all changes being part of the next site version, instead of rolling them out incrementally. Actually, Brandon, we had already provided a response to him directly, and nothing was explicitly "secret" - just private. But if Nathan wanted to share the idea with the rest of the community and get some more thoughts, that's obviously not only cool by me, but also a good idea. -
"Moving on" from OC ReMix (split from BGC apology)

ecto, we spoke about this via private message, and Larry & I completely agreed and indicated to you that we'd be working on many of your suggestions. I'm confused as to whether you're reiterating this publicly because you just really want to drive your point home more emphatically, or because you didn't take us at our word... you mention the word "douchebaggery" and insist that you're not accusing us of it, but I'm a little confuddled as to why you'd feel the need for this almost verbatim reiteration. Who are you trying to persuade? I think both artist profile pages on OCR and YouTube descriptions can both be modified to better promote artists, and most of what's been suggested Larry & I are both on board with... don't know how many ways to say it. I'll add, however, that we do consider promotion of OCR itself an equal goal, and that we want the success of each individual artist to extend to ALL artists by virtue of promoting the community at large. In this instance, what's being proposed isn't at odds with that goal, and a better balance can be achieved, and we were actually discussing this prior to your remarks via PM and prior to this thread. We've been in between site phases for a LONG while now and it's curtailed our ability to make more significant modifications to the site code. In this instance, the code that auto-generates YouTube writeups is actually the same code responsible for remix pages on the site, and currently it isn't pulling back individual artist links & references, so the modification in question goes beyond simple templating and will actually require some data access changes. It's doable, but atm we're releasing albums, posting mixes, and still trying to fulfill our FF6 kickstarter, and it's going to take a bit. Your tone - and this could just be a "lost in translation" type of thing where text is failing to convey the accurate emotion - comes off as a little begrudging & antagonizing. By saying that you're not accusing anyone of "douchebaggery," you kinda-sorta introduce that specter, FYI, and it comes in the context of your repeating here what we had already discussed & explicitly agreed with via PM on August 27th... At any rate, we hear you, we don't disagree, we appreciate the feedback, and while we will continue to ensure that OCR itself is promoted - as we believe this helps ALL artists on the site - we WILL be taking many of the proposed measures laid out in this thread, which we had previously contemplated and agreed on prior to their suggestion. In the meantime, if you can work towards the science that would allow us to clone myself or Larry, please proceed As a sidenote, if ALL you want out of OCR is promotion for yourself, well... we're going to try harder to provide that, but here's our mission statement: To summarize, just in case there's ANY confusion: Our sole purpose for existing is not to make you rich or get you clicks, but we do take artist promotion seriously, and we agree that there's room for improvement. -
"Moving on" from OC ReMix (split from BGC apology)
djpretzel replied to djpretzel's topic in General Discussion
It's not really an issue, per se, it's just something we decided to talk about Uh, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. I kinda-sorta think the whole point I was making was that "moving on" and "next level" - and now "evolves" - aren't the best words to be using, because for a lot of people, myself included, it's not hierarchical like that. There's no reason to think of writing originals as necessarily being an evolution; it's just a different ballgame altogether. Plenty of folk alternate between both, and this continued idea that it's one or the other and that there's some sequence of steps/levels to be moved on from (or evolved to) seems really, really, really, REALLY, artificial and bogus to me. -
