  1. Ask the Mass Effect 2 Composers (BGC's one of 'em!) So an obscure little indie game came out not so recently that you may have heard of, Mass Effect 2, and guess what? Along with Jack Wall, Sam Hulick, David Kates, and music implementation by Brian DiDomenico, the OC ReMix judges panel's own Jimmy Hinson is one of the composers! How awesome is that? Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy, but it was also mad skills what got him the gig, and we're all very proud he could work with Lead Composer Jack Wall and two other talented & established composers to score the soundtrack to the megahit that is ME2. So, first off, Mass Congrats to Mr. Hinson... truly an amazing achievement. Secondly, we wants to know: How'd Jimmy get the gig? How did Video Game Live co-creator Jack Wall lead a team of badass composers to score one of the most anticipated sequels of video games? How much inspiration did they draw from the original score vs. composing from scratch? How much alien sex did they study & analyze - professionally and scientifically - as part of the creative process? Those are some of the questions WE came up with that WE wanna see answered, but we're pretty sure you've got more. So, post 'em here, and we'll pick and choose and present the final list to the entire ME2 composition team for their thoughtful consideration... and amusement. Post your questions for the Mass Effect 2 composers on this thread, but remember... Keep it relatively PG, and always respectful. Questions should focus on ME and ME2 only; comparison/contrast to other soundtracks from the same composers are OK, but questions about completely different games/scores should be avoided. Questions can either be directed at a specific composer, or posed to the whole team, in which case Jack will probably respond himself or delegate accordingly. Be specific by prefacing your question with either the name of the composer, or the word "Team". Multiple Qs per thread is fine, just try to limit it to three or four good ones rather than a battery of... less good ones. Questions must be submitted by Monday, February 15th, which gives y'all a week. So, once again, huge congrats to Jimmy and all the ME2 composers for a job well done... now post your Qs!
  2. Very classy, sir, and well said. OCR staff are often in the difficult, unenviable position of trying to make everyone happy at the same time, which Abraham Lincoln posthumously informs us is impossible, so when project leaders in particular can be understanding & good-spirited, it goes a long way.
  3. Okay, hopefully peeps read this: My present notion is to build a sort of ad-hoc file hosting service for OCR, integrated with the forums but not hosted directly on the primary server (where bandwidth is more of an issue). Such a service would be relatively modular and could potentially handle project files. My other notion is to enable attachments on our forums, which would allow for images and could also probably do MIDI files, as a start. I'd love to do PDFs, for sheet music, but damn does that format have some serious security problems. I'm in the weeds on my DKC2 mixes and work is busy, so neither of those two things is happening too awful soon, but I'd caution against any sort of super-involved database-driven mega-doodad. I think careful feature consideration and integration with OCR are what will make such functionality actually useful, and while that incurs a delay, it also results in something that folks will use as oppose to abandon/ignore. I like this idea a lot... I guess because I had it too, several times But I was just thinking it would be "neat," not necessarily that the resulting project files could be used for instructional purposes. Someone should organize it (hint, wink, nudge, etc.)!
  4. I'd be down for Manny & Meche off of Grim Fandango...
  5. At the moment one of FL's biggest limitations is the lack of a 64-bit version; addressable somewhat by jBridge, etc., but until Delphi itself is x64 compatible, FL will remain rooted in 32-bitdom Cubase uses syncrosoft dongle for software protection, FL uses serial I believe? Gonna go out on a limb and say that Cubase is more "pro" - yeah, I know, that's a loaded term, and I've made stuff that sounds like ass next to plenty of tracks made in FL, but you'll find Cubase in more pro studios (of course, pro tools is the king there) Cubase is multiplatform, FL is Win only Cubase has a loooooong history, going back to the days of the Atari ST. While FL has certainly been around awhile, Cubase is still a senior citizen to its... twentysomething. Again, loaded term, but I think Cubase is more of an innovator.., Steinberg/Cubase designed the VST standard to begin with, way back when. DXi, AU, etc. followed. Cubase used to be like Fruity - pretty much the flagship product of a company primarily devoted to software dev. Now they're owned by Yamaha, and it's taken a direction towards favoring some Yamaha tech. I'd just emphasize that Cubase is more "corporate" whereas FL still feels a bit less tethered.
  6. Yes >> http://ocremix.org/song/68 Note that you can click on songs to see alternate song names and the game they are assigned to.
  7. Just a quick clarification, in light of our recent project moratorium: Mustin did talk w/ Larry and I about this at MAG, prior to the moratorium He's been planning it for a long time We're still trying to get our shit together and put some more structure around the whole project process, but we didn't wanna crap on Mustin's parade and close this thread or anything like that. Sounds like a baller project; awesome that we can join forces officially! That is all!
  8. I was actually gonna say the same thing in my writeup, then just figured it wasn't worth it; most of the vocal has some good vibrato on it, but that line - repeated at the end, in particular - seems to sit & hold when it should probably flutter a bit more... then again, who am I to nitpick vocals?
  9. Didn't even listen, BUT... best mix title I've seen in a long time
  10. Our forums were down for a bit the last two nights, and I didn't post any mixes, but there was a good reason: we just completed our server migration. Some pics: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=137351&id=7350358374&ref=mf The guys at LiquidWeb (thanks Tony & Dennis!) are awesome, making the impact minimal and the transition rather seamless. Heck, we even upgrading to MySQL 5.1 and added a couple PHP extensions while we were at it. This upgrade was a big part of our master plan to rule the universe, etc. and it's fantastic that we've knocked it out so early in 2010, building a foundation for steadily increasing the awesome the other eleven months. We got several large donations this month that completely covered the migration fee, so a big thanks there - this box is dedicated to you! Roughly speaking, it's four times faster, has five times the space (more or less), and three times the memory. As our astute Twitter followers pointed out, that's SIXTY TIMES THE AWESOME. Runs faster than , crystal meth, etc. Bottom line, site should be a little faster now, but more importantly, it shouldn't get slower as we continue to pile on more stuffs. Moment of silence for the old server - it did what it did well, for over three years. Respect.Nuff said.
