OverClocked ReMix Releases Free Fan Tribute Album, Donkey Kong Country 2: Serious Monkey Business March 15, 2010 Contact: press@ocremix.org FAIRFAX, VA--OverClocked ReMix today released its 17th album, Donkey Kong Country 2: Serious Monkey Business. The album consists of 33 arrangements of composer David Wise's original score to the 1995 Nintendo game developed by Rare, Donkey Kong Country 2. Wise himself also contributed the album's closing track with an arrangement of DKC2's credits theme, featuring collaboration and live performances from former Rare colleagues Grant Kirkhope (Donkey Kong Land 2) and Robin Beanland (Donkey Kong Country). The album is available for free download at http://dkc2.ocremix.org. Serious Monkey Business is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo or Rare. Over 30 artists participated in honoring Wise in this two-disc project which consists of nearly two and a half hours of music. "This project is, first and foremost, a tribute to Mr. Wise - to have him contribute a track was a real honor," said Jeremy Waters, co-director and creator of the album. Artists, including Wise, were given complete creative freedom to reimagine the game's music in new ways, resulting in diverse genres including new age, trance, metal, orchestral, pop, IDM, rhumba and merengue. "The artists have poured hundreds, if not thousands, of hours into the music," stated co-director Wesley Cho. "I like to see people explore the possibilities offered by music of various genres, and I think we have succeeded in putting together a melting pot album with a lot of accessibility." Being a semi-OCD purist and loving firm definitions, I do dislike even our Tetris exception, but in that one shining instance, I bow to circumstances. I strongly believe that "VGM" means music written FOR games, not music that is used IN games, and thus, while I do love me some dead white guys, Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, etc., etc. are all out. That certainly doesn't mean you shouldn't go ahead and make the mix, it just means we won't post it... I actually think a good project idea (oh god, not ANOTHER project!) would be a classical album of themes that have appeared in games. We COULD release that, though nothing from it would be posted on the site, save for a Tetris mix

OCRO-0001 - Kaleidoscope Original Soundtrack
djpretzel replied to djpretzel's topic in Album Reviews & Comments
This all seems like good, healthy conversation to me, so no need to label it "drama" For a shorter game, personally, I thought AnSo's approach made complete sense - develop an overall aesthetic and stick with it, with enough variation between levels so that each world is distinct, but maintaining the overall "Kaleidoscope" sound. Whether that sound is exciting to you or not (I mean, it IS mellow...) is certainly subjective, but personally I don't think it bears a resemblance to any platformer soundtracks I can think of, and I dig platformers. Platformers usually have chirpier, bumpier soundtracks, and this seemed a little more zen to me, so in my mind it's both original and distinct. I can't say it's "hum-in-the-shower" catchy, but when someone asks me what the soundtrack to the game is like, I can recreate in my mind and describe it accurately, which means it's memorable on some level. If someone can name a platformer with a similar soundtrack, I'd love to check it out, but otherwise I specifically feel like - whether you think it works or not - AnSo did come up with a pretty distinct sound. That's the numero uno thing I like about his score - it doesn't really remind me of anything else. At least, in the VGM world... overall, I'd describe it as "American Beauty OST meets Synths + Chiptunes"... -

wip Street Fighter - Eagle's theme

Parts of this are spot-on and sound pretty good, others are a little sparse... I'm thinking maybe too many ideas? When it's just kicks & snares, no hats or other percussive elements, it can sound a bit empty, and I'm not really feeling the four-on-the-floor kick on every beat towards the end. That being said, some of synths are pretty rockin', and I think this definitely has potential. It'd be awesome to have a mix from the first SF here on OCR, keep at it! -

vB4 is interesting to watch - they're resolving bugs but the change in ownership/developers is making it a bit of a bumpy road. I don't want to endanger our forums by upgrading prematurely, although digitalpoint.com, shoryuken (beta), m-audio.com and others have already taken the plunge. Once DKC2 is released, this will come back onto my radar as an immediate goal. In the meantime, if you're curious, check out http://vbulletin.com and the forums (and blogs) there for an idea of what to expect. There's definitely RSS and some pretty nice tagging, draft/preview functionality, the blogs aren't an afterthought at this point, they're fairly well-implemented. One thing is, blogs can have both global and local categories. Local would be user-defined, global would be across all blogs. One thing we'll need almost immediately is a list of global categories. I'm not entirely sure how we wanna break that down - super generic like "Games" "Anime" "Music", which might not be too helpful, or more specific like even specific categories for the current gen systems... You wanna hijack this thread and start looking at vbulletin.com and coming up with suggestions for global blog categories we can discuss & refine, that'd bring us one step closer - just an idea!
