  1. Hi there, I wasn't familiar with the source, but I've just had a quick listen, and it sounds like you've stayed pretty close to it. You should try adding some chords with some background pads, and being a bit more adventurous with the percussion. The more filled-out parts with the bass and tenor sax and the organ noodling round about 2:30 sounds the best, so try and get the rest of the song up to that level.
  2. Oh man this is brilliant! Reminds me of the "Corn-Fed Kong" song from the DKC3 album, and also I'm picturing the Soggy Bottom Boys dancing on stage at the end of O Brother, Where Art Thou? I agree that the harmonica feels a little bit overpowering at times, but other than that, I can totally appreciate the "jam" feel you've got going on, and I love it!
  3. Hey Joe! Really enjoyed this one, but a couple of things that I think could be improved are a little more mid-low presence in the strings, particularly in the intro. Also the panning could be a little wider - you could either turn up the master stereo spread, or change it individually, but with orchestral pieces you can generally hear quite a bit of stereo separation, as if each person was in front of you on a stage playing their instrument. The outro was excellent - sounds very "Russian".
  4. Hey, great source tune! This remix sounds a lot like a cover though - you add some of your own stuff at 2:50 but there's not enough interpretation to make it really unique at the moment. Also the mixing sounds a bit muddy. Do you have reverb on your bass drum? The bass seems really lost in the mix. I can hear there is some bass, but I think too many sounds are bleeding into the low-end (reverb usually does this, especially on the bass drum) to make the bass sound very quiet. I noticed the feedback on your other track mentioned a muddiness problem as well. Have a listen to http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR01976/ for an example of how you can have reverb on sounds, but also get really tight-sounding bass and drums. Keep working on your production skills!
  5. Thanks for the kind comments, people! I didn't actually realise Hogs of War was a game... woops! Jewbei: yeah, you never know who is listening to and being inspired by your music, and that's one of the things that makes sharing stuff so rewarding.
  6. Beautifully played! I'd love for you to fill out this arrangement and make it your own. This is one of the best VGM sources ever
  7. Ah the flute just came in... it sounds very clear compared to the rest of the mix. If you can make the rest of the mix as clear and present as the flute, that'd be great. The rest of it sounds a bit like it's being played through a radio. I also agree that the grace notes appear far too often, so try and trim them down. Otherwise, pretty nice to listen to
  8. Yeah this sounds like a great idea, I'd definitely watch as I like reading the reviews in the judging thread to see what common mistakes are - if you were explaining them whilst we were listening that would help a lot with identifying problems with mixes.
  9. Grüß dich Tobias! I listened to your DKC remixes, and they're more like straight covers really. In fact, I don't hear a single note that's different from the originals. If you're looking to get something on OCReMix, it has to be your own interpretation of the material, and not a cover. Have a listen to some of the remixes of those source tunes already on the site and you'll get an idea of what sort of thing to aim for if you want to be posted.
  10. Thanks a lot mate! Really glad you liked that track as it was something of an experiment. I've a feeling you're going to really dig my next OCR post if you like my trance stuff
  11. Oh yeahhhh! 8 original tracks, and one remix from halc. Pay what you want, because free music is awesome
  12. This is brilliant! Just when I thought it was feeling a bit too conservative for OCR, the transition at 1:25 hit and it went all kinds of crazy. This is right up there with the Plaid Muffins
  13. This has to be one of the most perfectly crafted viral releases ever! The website was excellently designed, and I found myself staring at the mask for 10 minutes listening to the music, slowly becoming more and more despondent. The album as well moved me in a way that I haven't felt for a long time when listening to music - it's sad, yes, but it's more than that - it's utterly tragic in the purest sense, as everything is crashing down, enveloping the entire world. Most games convey a sense of hope and courage, however Majora's Mask was one of the very few games to promote the very opposite of this, and this album just hits that feeling perfectly. I don't know what else to say - it's utterly fantastic.
  14. In answer to your original question - you can get away with loads of melody in EDM. Just listen to Drive Hard by PrototypeRaptor, or The Ecstasy of Life by DDRKirby. They're both hugely memorable EDM tunes with 4x4 beats, but have strong melodic hooks to them. The general trend is away from melody into more rhythmic music for clubs, but that's not to say it doesn't have a place. And just to touch on anterroir's point - it's generally a bad idea to make music just because you want fans. You should make music that you like to listen to yourself, and if other people do as well, that's cool. If you don't want to admit liking popular music like David Guetta or deadmau5, then don't make music just because you think it'll make you popular - at least admit to liking it first! That way when you do get fans and try changing styles, they'll hate you for getting all experimental!
  15. Just want to echo Rozovian and crypto_magnum on this one. It doesn't seem "glitchy" enough to me, and there really aren't enough changes in dynamics so it begins to feel a bit static and sluggish. The groove's good, but have you tried a slightly faster tempo? Could be personal taste but I'd speed it up and see how it sounds. You obviously know what you're doing with getting that "big" sound, but you need to have some more chilled out parts as well to emphasise that, and also try and clean up the synths too to reduce some of the muddiness. If I seem too critical it's only because this has potential
  16. Hi! Great source tune - I listen to the UT soundtrack regularly, it's so good! Really like the guitar work in this track, although I think the drums are a little weak, and other than the guitar and drums, the soundscape feels a little empty. Is there any bass? I love it when the rising strings come in, that part is definitely the best bit - try and make the rest of it sound as good as that.
  17. You're in there at 2:46 Vinnie - it's sped up quite a bit though Glad everyone's enjoying it!
  18. Yeah I agree... mainly towards the end, although I was really nervous about getting so far through and not messing up I missed a few transitions (the BadAzz one is a little abrupt!). Took me an hour and a half to get that take, after the audio didn't record on a previous good one... arrrrgh! Who would have thought your BK remix would go well with dubstep though? That's probably my favourite part of it
  19. I have a WIP of a Mario Sunshine track! Fear not! It's next on my "to remix" list
  20. Hi everybody! I was inspired by Madeon to have a go at live mashups, so I bought a Launchpad and did one using 16 OCRemix songs... am I doing it right?
  21. Massive improvement with the Oboe interplay! I commented on Soundcloud about the kick sample - it seems out of place in the mix. Try something a little cleaner with a higher pitch to it - something "zappy" might work well. It sounds like you've got the hi-cut filter set too low at the moment and it's really muffled (probably intentional), but it doesn't work in the mix unless you open that filter up for the next section (when the chimes hit) really. I also think you should work on the humanisation aspect of the sax and oboe now if you want a shot at passing the judges. The mix is good as it is, but it has to have that extra TLC if you want a shot at passing the panel! Maybe try asking in the recruitment section if a saxophonist wants to play some parts live? Might work!
  22. Hi there, I don't know about "lots and lots", but I'll give you some feedback at least! Well, the synth sounds you've chosen are very simple, so they don't sound all too different from the game boy. I'd suggest adding some more variety with phasing, chorus, or simply more advanced sounds. The tempo feels a bit slower than the original, so try and make up for that with more interesting sound design. Also, there's no percussion! Even if you just add some chiptune-style white noise hits as a kind of rolling-snare to fit with the "processional" feeling of the song, I feel that would add a lot to it.
  23. I love this source, and I also like the idea of an uplifting orchestral style with a piano lead, however I think your samples are letting you down. It seems like you've had to add a fair bit of reverb, especially to the piano and strings, and that's pushing it back in the mix and making it sound muddy. I enjoyed the soloing even if the other sources weren't too clear to me, so I don't think the arrangement is too bad, just work on cleaning up some of the muddiness if you can, and maybe try varying some of the lead sounds during the solo - that clarinet(?) thing gets a bit old by the end, it'd be nice to have some interplay between 2 different instruments. Good start, keep working on it
