  1. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1319025063525090467&hl=en

This is a video I did for my Visual Effects course @ Full Sail. The idea of the project was to create a "Mouse trap" like scenario with perpetual motion using Maya dynamics. Think Mouse Trap the board game or the Incredible Machine.

AKA: This was done with physics simulation NOT traditional keyframe animation (although once a simulation worked, we baked it into keyframes on every frame since there's no garuntee a simulation will work the same everytime).

The whole thing was done in 1 week, so some of the shaders (textures), models, and lighting could be better, and it wasn't rendered at optimal settings to conserve time. We plan on re-doing of a few of the afore mentioned things sometime soon, but as it stood we had a deadline to meet.

(As it was we rendered 2300 frames at 30+ seconds per frame on 17 seperate PCs. This doesn't include the inital level intro, the opening and credits, and then the render from Final Cut after it was all spliced together. The render process alone took easily over 3 hours.

    Music credits go to:

-Intro, Samus / Item Fanfares from Metroid Prime / Fusion OST

-(Full of Life) 'Brinstar 1' by Ari 'Protricity' Asulin for Relics of the Chozo - http://smproject.ocremix.org

-Metroid Prime Intro/Menu by Stemage for Metroid Metal - http://metroidmetal.com

  2. I have the same question -- will we have to check the wiki, will we get a PM? What's the planned delivery method, Rama?

Likely via PM and in the thread and probably in ThaWiki too.

I thought the script was going to take remixer needs into account. Like, people who need MIDIs, stuff like that. I need a source with some kind of regular filetype, like midi or mp3. Or even youtube.

We've been discussing this as well. The script obviously won't be taking this into account, but we may be. This is the kind of thing I wanted to work on during this downtime.

Mixers WILL know in advance when the list is going to be coming.

  3. How about extending the deadline on requests a few days and allowing 2 per person? It seems a solution capable of producing much more varied results on requested material than just you adding 20 other themes at your discretion, rama. :/

The only problem with that is, people are already eager to start mixing, and it took a week to get BARELY as many requests as mixers. Even if I let people get 2nd requests, a lot of the requests are already pretty difficult to make a mix of. I could easily fill it with another 20 mixes that'll not too complex and under remix just to get the ball rolling.

Unfortunately at this point the people had their chance to talk. I need to think about the mixers now.

  4. Um so is there a new thread for this competition? I'm eager to get remixing on that song ='(

It's not a new thread. The title was changed to let people know it's Phase 2, now. Phase 2 ends in less than 2 hours, and we have a bare minimum or requests (I think we're actually 1 short of 1 per mixer).

I want to have EXTRA requests, so I'll probably be adding another 20 or so to the pool, and we'll mix it up and have the match-ups announced sometime next week. After all the match-ups are handed out (likely announced in the thread and sent out in a mass PM) then mixers will have 1 month from that time.

JUST A HEADS UP FOR EVERYONE:

I am absolutely anal about file names and ID3 tags. Anyone in the IRC channel will tell you that. At the end of the competition, so that all files are uniform, to ensure everyone has hosting, and to make sure everything is done cleanly. We will likely be using the system at Compo:ThaSauce or a similiar system which uses ThaSauce userbase. WHICH MEANS, that you WILL likely have to have an account on ThaSauce (besides the fact that you likely should anyway). This means if you DON'T HAVE ONE YET that you should SIGN-UP now. In case that's what we decide on doing. This way you are PREPARED when it comes time to submit your finished mixes. This system will also automatically start AND end the mixing periods (submissions will shut off after the deadline.)

    Just a heads up.

NOTE: IF YOUR REGISTRATION DOESN'T COME WITHIN A FEW HOURS. PM ME WITH YOUR DESIRED USERNAME AND PASSWORD AND I WILL TRY TO FORCE THE ACCOUNT.

  5. Tell that to Half-Life, Half-Life 2, and all of the various mods and communities that have developed around them. No console game can even touch the longevity of the best PC games, no matter how much I may prefer console gaming overall.

Tell that to the emulation community.

You're right, Half-Life 1 really has stood the test of time up against games like Final Fantasy VI, or Chrono Trigger...or even Mario 64....

I'm just DYING to go back and play Opposing Forces.........

  6. I fail to see how that's different than the console games. 99% of all the games released are forgettable at best.

Save for MMOs console games have a LOT longer life expectancy than PC games, and their output is generally a lot more steady. PCs get maybe 1 or 2 decent exclusives a year (which is mostly only if you consider games that SHOULD be PC exclusives as PC exclusives like Orange Box and C&C3 and stuff like that that gets played primarily on PC).

    If even that.

  7. Lies. Good PC titles are few and far between outside of the MMO world and Christmas time.

We got Orange box, Crysis, C&C3 on a lesser extent, some more cross platform FPS...but that's it.

I can't even remember a PC game that came out that mattered between Oblivion and C&C3. And between C&C3 and Orange Box.

  8. In a bizarre, unforeseen circumstance, it is beginning to seem as if we'll have substantially less requests than I expected (in fact right now we're still 4 short of 1 per mixer). I'm looking to have AT LEAST 80 total, so if we don't hit that before the deadline I MAY extend requests and give everyone more, or I may (and more likely to ensure quality) just fill the last few slots myself.

  9. Depending on how this goes, would you consider doing this again in the summer?

Traditionally it's an annual thing, and I think I'd kind of like to keep it that way. Sort of like a ReMixer Olympics of sorts. We could do a another one more toward the middle of the year, but if we did it would be likely water down, and on a smaller scale, as not to steal too much spotlight from the main event.

Edit: However, a lot of people have said they wished it WERE in the summer. So if we do a summer thing this year, and it has a good turnout as well, then perhaps next year I'll just wait until Summer to do the next one.

  10. You should probably choose one of those just to be sure Rama doesn't ignore it...because we don't want that.

    Also, I love you.

My request comes from Mario Kart DS:

    DK Pass midi

I've already sent friendlyHunter a PM, and I'm awaiting a reply, BUT.............

The more work I have to do for your request, the more likely I am to put it off...and the more likely i am to forget about it...and the more likely it is to not get done. Not to mention that I might just flat out get annoyed. So before you just say "you can get a midi at Zophar or VGMusic" think about how badly you want to get that request filled, and put some effort in.

Not that this was the case with friendlyHunter, it's just something for anyone who's thinking about requesting to consider. The less work I have to do for YOUR request, the more I <3 you.

  11. I dedicate this challenge to the memory of Reuben Kee

    *Throw Down Gauntlet*

    Game: Metal Gear Solid

    Platform: PSX

    Song: Rex's Lair

    Source Tune:

Sorry, couldn't find a midi. However, this song should ber easy to replicate....but challenging to remix.

My rationale for selecting this song is thus:

    1. There aren't many MGS songs on the site.

    2. This song is my personal favorite from the MGS soundtrack besides The Best is Yet to Come. I consider it to be a near perfect song already because it is littered with symbolism and I just like it.

    3. I thought it would be not impossible to remix, but Challenging.

Have fun if it's not rejected. :)

    It's pretty similiar to THIS:

    http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/sony/ps1/mgs-Escape.mid

As it's simple chords and most of the chords are heard their, just sped up. Maybe someone could even make us a midi of just the chords, but it'll fly for now.

  12. Game: The Maze of Galious, a.k.a. Daimashikyou Galious

    System: MSX (original), NES (port)

    Song: Castle - Knightmare

VG Music MIDI (MSX version, more complete than the NSF)

    Zophar's Domain NSF - Track 1

Akumu's NSF Archive NSF (as Maze of Galious 2) - Track 3

Fudeba MSX HomePage MIDI (slow tempo, but only as complete as the NSF)

The NES version is faster and has a small part of the song cut out, but the MSX original maintains the general melody, so it's not too different overall.

    Thanks, and have fun.

I don't know what to me more ecstatic about, the fact that you requested an MSX title, or the fact that you did to SO THOROUGHLY that it brought a tear to my eye.

LEARN FROM THIS MAN'S EXAMPLE, PEOPLE.

  13. Phase II: Requests

    =========================================

We're now entering Phase II, which is the songs/games request stage. It is important to remember a few key points...

    • You MUST include SOME form of source tunes. THE MORE SOURCES, THE BETTER.
    • You are STRONGLY ADVISED to try AS HARD AS YOU CAN to provide a midi file. IF YOU PROVIDE A MIDI FILE, YOU INCREASE THE LIKELIHOOD YOUR SONG WILL GET DONE.
    • See VGMusic.com for details.
    • In Phase II EACH USER ONLY GETS 1 REQUEST. ONE. UNO. DO NOT MAKE MORE THAN 1 REQUEST. IF YOU DO I MAY EVEN IGNORE ALL YOUR REQUESTS. IGNORANCE is NOT an excuse.:banghead:
    • When posting sources please be sure to respect the boards policy on piracy. We will be working with users and mixers to best ensure that your sources are viable.
    • I reserve the right to REJECT your request for any which reason including, but not limited to: Insufficient source, over remixed, overt obscurity, unrealistically difficult, and a long long list of other things.
    • Don't be dumb. Seriously. As the people requesting this contest is, in essence FOR YOU as much as it is for the mixer. If you really and truly want to see some stellar results. TAKE YOUR TIME and DO THIS RIGHT. Be AS THOROUGH AS YOU FEEL NEED BE.

That's all I got for now. Have at it.
