There are some cool elements in this track but Vinnie is right, it ends up sounding undeveloped. When the drums kick in at 1:00 it seems there should be a kick on the 1 beat, but if there is, it is mixed too quietly. This sounds like Damage drums which I love! But the snare is mixed very loudly and the kick too softly. I also like the section from 3:03-3:27 but I agree there should be a section similar to this (energy-wise) earlier in the track as well. It is a slow build up and 24 seconds of excitement isn't quite enough of a payoff. Something else of interest is needed before 3:03, like at 1:24-1:48, that section could have faster drums or some other backing element added for excitement. Very cool ideas but not quite there for me either. NO (resubmit)

Vinnie is right, this IS really lovely! The samples are handled well... not perfectly but really very well. The oboe lead seems a little bit quiet. I agree with Vinnie's main gripe though, the track is really finished and wrapping up before it hits the two minute mark. That's really short for a dreamy orchestral piece, while it might work for something fast and furious, for THIS track if leaves it feeling undeveloped. One more section, even a short one, before the outro, would make it feel more complete. Sounds great, though! NO (resubmit)

This is really very good! Me likey! -
This is brilliant, and not a moment too soon. This will save everyone loads of time. Bravo! The red arrows I find to be especially helpful, for those of us with older, tired eyes, to really appreciate where the new genre tags will appear in the postings, and I'm glad that the yellow highlighting will be a permanent feature. Thank you for this, Dave. For that future time when we whittle the list down to one, might I make a suggestion for one appropriate catch-all category: "technOCR" Thanks again for this Dave, superduper change to the site.

This does sound great indeed! But Vinnie is right, it is too repetitive. I copied and cut the track at 1:25 and layered it with itself, and I found out that 0:00-1:25 is identical to 1:25-2:42 with the only exception being the fadeout ending. For OCR this is not enough development in the arrangement, one playthrough cut and pasted into two just doesn't make it. What is here sounds great though, if you can make some changes to the second half, add a wicked solo section or something, that would make the arrangement interpretive enough to work. NO (resubmit)

*NO* Parasite Eve 'Victims of the Imposter Gods'
Chimpazilla replied to Palpable's topic in Judges Decisions
Wow, I love your thoughts about us not playing God and messing with black holes, and I agree with you... *looks askance at what CERN is currently up to...* Regarding this mix, I agree with Vinnie pretty much completely. The drums really need some changeups in the first half, but I'll add that I'm not sure the swing in the second half really works with the vibe of the song either. I also share his feeling that the track doesn't develop enough melodically. Once the backing and lead writing are established, they just stay the same throughout. You've got some great synth sounds going, but they just end up plodding along after awhile. Also, I feel like the distortion effect introduced in the intro doesn't need to continue throughout the rest of the track. Starting at 0:56, the distortion could be replaced with something else, some sort of glitching or different effect than in the intro, then do something completely different again for the final part of the track. As it stands, the distortion/alien radio effect just goes on way too long, giving the track a lossy effect. I'm also not a fan of it being panned left, hard panning of things always sounds odd to me. If you're going to leave this effect in, I suggest having it pan left and right slowly throughout the track, or leave it centered and wide, with some additional sfx coming in from time to time. How cool would that be? I don't care for fadeouts, but as Vinnie said, fading out at 4:28 would work better than starting back up with the A section. NO (resubmit) -
*NO* Chrono Trigger 'Miles Above the Sea'
Chimpazilla replied to Palpable's topic in Judges Decisions
This is a very unique take on this source, I like the idea! Very cool. But I agree with Emu, it needs a major eq overhaul. You've got a lot of sounds in the same frequency range, guitars and the upper end of the bass too. And definitely too much low end content in that kick, those fast kick passages sound mushy and overwhelming in the lows. I really like this arrangement. I think one more pass at the mixing will get the job done. NO (resubmit) -
*NO* Sonic the Hedgehog 2 'Numinous Cavern'
Chimpazilla replied to Chimpazilla's topic in Judges Decisions
The drum machine right away sounds repetitively programmed, as does the bassline. You've got instruments hard-panned right and left, I don't understand why people do that. The main lead sounds piercing, and the vibrato goes a little too wild on the longer notes. The arrangement is very conservative and simple, although there are clearly improvisations made to the melody. I think this would need a mixing cleanup as many of the frequencies are competing for space, and that panning really isn't working for me. Still, some promising ideas here. NO -
Hi, My name is Ace Waters and this is my first time submitting a song to OCREMIX. I make music under the name "Motive Makes a Man" so, I suppose that would be my ReMixer name. My music is a unique blend of analog electronic equipment and natural instruments. I started making VGM with my youtube channel, and each song is actually made for a video, including the submission below. This means that most parts are recorded in one continuous take, to allow the video to look more natural. You can watch the video here if you like: My submission is titled Numinous Cavern. It is a reworking of Mystic Cave Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 2. I hope you enjoy it! As stated, I have a youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/acewatersthe3rd) that I update weekly with cover videos, VGM, and original songs. I also have a website here: http://motivemakesaman.com/ That contains all of my original music. ----------------

*NO* Final Fantasy 3 'Ur Town' *PROJECT*
Chimpazilla replied to Chimpazilla's topic in Judges Decisions
I love the concept of this, very cute and upbeat! The vocals sound really good and I like the lyrics. But I really don't like the rhythm guitar panned all the way to the left, and that repetitive hat and also the crash panned all the way right, snare all the way on the left. I mean, why? Also the bassline is very quiet and the bass timbre isn't knocking my socks off, it doesn't seem to fit. The vocals are great here, but the rest of the track I feel needs some adjustment and improvement. The drums are really very drab and repetitive. There are a couple of sour notes here and there as well, mostly in the final section where the guitar is the lead. I hope this can be fixed up! NO (resubmit) -

*NO* Diddy Kong Racing 'Monster in the Headlights'
Chimpazilla replied to Chimpazilla's topic in Judges Decisions
Starts off very slow, the first minute is very sparse and also very quiet, not going much over -9db, but I like the change to 3/4 and the creepy atmosphere. The string shrieks are quite good, in fact the string sequencing is quite good throughout the mix, as is the brass when it briefly appears at 2:22-2:34. I like the spooky synth lead. Source well represented. The drums starting at 1:48 are pretty bland and autopilot, but their minimalism is appropriate for the feel of the mix. I feel like the mix could stand to have been mastered just a little bit louder overall, mainly because I find the intro too soft, but the track does have good dynamics overall. I like it! Slightly understated, but spooky fun. edit 5/19/15: Listening again. Weak drums are weak, the other Js are right, it's a dealbreaker. Let's get a drum upgrade, better sounds and some more varied writing as well. NO (resubmit) -
Contact Information ReMixer name: Neifion Real name: Mathew Kong E-mail address: Website: https://soundcloud.com/kekopro UserID: 51727 Submission Information Game arranged: Diddy Kong Racing Arrangement name: Monster in the Headlights Song arranged: Haunted Woods Composer: David Wise System: Nintendo 64 Developer: Rare Publisher: Nintendo Date published: 1997 Original song link: Of all the great music from DKR, Haunted Woods has always been my favorite. I used to park myself somewhere on the track and just listen for a while! When I decided to take on this song, my first thought was to slow it down and make it into this really creepy orchestral waltz. I scrapped that pretty quick and ended up with something akin to a retro sci-fi/horror/big band/orchestral/electronic hybrid; basically a Frankenstein. For the beginning, I drew on a lot of things that scared me as a kid: Are You Afraid of the Dark, Tales from the Crypt, etc. Lots of minor trills, string runs, creepy pianos, and even a hefty jump scare. When the theremin and timpani appear, I wanted to convey a trudging feeling, like some possessed person dragging their body to the edge of a cliff. There's a moment at the precipice where you hear the wind howling, and then as they fall the beat kicks in. The jazzy band mixed with electronic and orchestral elements was inspired by the retro style of Michael Giacchino. I wanted it to sound like an updated Twilight Zone episode. So on the jazz side there's pop brass and vibraphone and sort of an old school surf beat, and then you have the orchestra and synths filling it out. Anyway, this was a lot of fun, and whether or not it passes, I hope you enjoy it!

OCR03137 - *YES* FTL 'Faster Than Rock'
Chimpazilla replied to Chimpazilla's topic in Judges Decisions
This is a good sounding mix! It seems to follow the source pretty faithfully. Drums are tight and punchy. I feel like the rhythm guitars are too loud at 0:57, they drown out the lead there, all the way to 1:37 at which point the guitar lead is audible over the rhythm guitars. Still, I'd probably prefer the rhythm guitars come down just a drop, but not a big deal. The mix feels slightly awash in mid-lows, a little low end cleanup would help (and most probably low-cutting reverbs and delays), but also not a big deal. The section from 2:31-3:08 feels very slow and sparse, bringing the energy of the arrangement way down which is a shame. This is my biggest gripe. It's too long a stretch to go that sparse. When the instrumentation comes back in at 3:08 it sounds really nice, but the writing from 3:08-3:44 is repetitive. 3:44-4:24 is also repetitive. Overall though, other than 2:31-3:08, I feel that the arrangement is working. Regardless of the issues I've mentioned, I like the track enough to yes it. YES -

The song that made you want to remix
Chimpazilla replied to YoshiBlade's topic in General Discussion
Every Zelda song ever, but mainly Song of Storms. OoT is a game that makes me want to jump into it and live there, so I feel an emotional attachment to all of that music. Song of Storms was the first remix attempt I did, that was the one song that made me realize I needed to make music. -
This is a VERY busy and hectic track, and with busy partwriting like that, the eq and balance have to be really clean otherwise it just ends up sounding like a smashed wall of sound. There have been improvements over the past few resubs, but ultimately the major problems are still there. Larry has a very good point, you should take this to the workshop before resubbing again. Ideally, if you could find one person to work one-on-one with you, an OCR member or another producer friend whom you respect, that would be the best. I'd recommend timaeus222 in particular as a good person to hit up for advice and even hands-on help, he really likes helping people and he knows what he's doing with production. Larry's also right that the arrangement is strong. It just needs to breathe quite a bit better and not be so overwhelming. Getting this track sorted out and working right should be a tremendous learning experience and step forward for you in your production skills. Good luck! NO (resubmit, but only after a full eq and balance overhaul)

*NO* Sonic Chaos (GG) & Sonic 3 'Dance of a Dying Sea'
Chimpazilla replied to Chimpazilla's topic in Judges Decisions
I like the chill vibe that is established right away, and I like the drum groove but the drums are not well balanced, the hats or shaker is loud enough but I can barely hear the kick. When the melody drops at 0:35, that lead is straight-up terrible, I'm so sorry to be that harsh, but the timbre sounds like a placeholder while you did the writing, and you forgot to replace it with something nice. It sounds like the "initialize" preset on a synth, with no effects or modulation at all, it is expressionless and dry. The lead at 1:15 is silky and gorgeous and the writing is fabulous. The lead that begins at 2:09 is better than the first lead, but I'm not sure the morphing nature of this sound is working here, for this type of writing, and it is mixed too quietly. The writing here sounds just the same as the first lead part. As the track goes on, that cool drum groove really never changes much, neither does the backing chord progression, and the padding sounds the same all the way through, leaving the track feeling repetitive despite the multiple lead solos. I feel like the soundscape needs more variation, even just for a small section, to break it up, and the first and third lead sound need to be improved. NO (resubmit) -
*NO* Final Fantasy 8 '3, 2, 1... ACTION!'
Chimpazilla replied to Chimpazilla's topic in Judges Decisions
Ugh, I struggle with medleys and medley-like arrangements. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I've been going over this one with Beatdrop for a little while here... and I have to agree with his assessment almost entirely. This is a really nicely produced track, it sounds great! But like Beatdrop, I can't identify 1:12-1:48 at all. It doesn't seem to be "The Stage Is Set" (in fact I can't identify that source anywhere in the mix.) You've mentioned that at 2:20 we hear the "main action theme of FF8." Beatdrop and I have been looking for a youtube video of that, and nothing is listed. Anyone familiar with FF8's OST, help! I have to also agree that 2:40-3:48 sounds really out of place, the track comes to a near-complete stop before and after this section, really chopping up the flow of the arrangement. This is an interesting arrangement decision, gives it a "multi-movement" kind of feel, but I'm not sure it works with OCR's standards. I have to agree that removing that section would make it more cohesive, although the track would definitely lose something that you've spent time to create. This is a super good sounding mix and I hate to do this, but I think it just doesn't fit into the standards with this arrangement. Also *gets out soapbox yet again* PLEASE PEOPLE... INCLUDE A SOURCE BREAKDOWN WITH YOUR SUBMISSION... especially when you are mixing multiple sources! It really helps us out and speeds up the judging process! NO (resubmit) -
OCR03136 - *YES* Zool 'Ninja-Godteri'
Chimpazilla replied to Chimpazilla's topic in Judges Decisions
I'm finding plenty of source here, with really nice interpretation. I think this is a fun mix, very upbeat, nice soloing, mixed well. Fun little tune, works for me! It's almost too short, but doesn't outstay its welcome and wraps up to a nice conclusion. YES -

*NO* Super Valis IV 'Battle for Dream World'
Chimpazilla replied to Chimpazilla's topic in Judges Decisions
Ack, my ears, those screaming saws. They sound like nails on a chalkboard to me. Not that they can't work and I know some people really like them. I'm going to have to revisit this one and check the sources, but I'm inclined toward no simply because the track is relentless, brittle, and LOUD. I wish there were a softer section somewhere. The drums never change. There are some nice details in the arrangement though. Ok we'll see about this one. edit: I'm going to go with my gut, I feel like this needs further work and Larry's vote helped me be sure of mine. So yeah, better leads, more variation in the beat, and ideally some sort of softer section or breakdown would be a great direction to take this. NO (resubmit) -
