REASON - Please Direct Reason questions here
Protricity replied to Devvyn's topic in Music Composition & Production
If you gave me a reason why the mod wheel idea doesn't work ideally for this situation then MAYBE, though its still messy as hell (still need to sync the tracks ex. cant have them both playing at the same time, need to turn one of when the other is on... huge headache) Use mod wheel. Thats what its for. -

I don't think this thread should have priority over all the others. Uhh.. why not just hook up the mod wheel to the modulator effect and turn the wheel off when you start, then push it up when you need the effect to happen?Isn't this how its supposed to be done? Wouldn't creating 2 maelstroms create a huge headache with notes playing at the same time, syn issues, and having to update 2 sequencer tracks for every notation change? -
OCR01031 - *YES* Metal Gear Solid 2 'May Fortune Smile Upon You'

Ugh... I SOOO dont want to hear this. You're a disgrace to Cakewalk and you suck at the internet. D:!!! -
OCR01031 - *YES* Metal Gear Solid 2 'May Fortune Smile Upon You'
Protricity replied to Vig's topic in Judges Decisions
I must give this a NO until the clipping is removed (there is quite a large amount) and the abrupt cut-off ending is cleaned out. Not his best in production or arranging, but there is a great deal of improve guitar skill and style involved. I hope to hear better from Mr. Taub in the future YES -
*NO* Legend of Kyrandia 'Fairy Tale' *RESUB*
Protricity replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This is cool, but something really hits me the wrong way - that sax riff. Its off key in several parts like at 2:55 and :35. Secondly, this song repeats. However, there is a very nice solo sax section in the middle of the song. Its the stuff I really like to see. I must say however, that this song simply needs to be enchanced. I know that sucks to hear cause this is apparently a resubmission. A. Dont simply repeat the song again and again. Vary it up. This is aranging and remixing. B. Rid of that off key riff or at least use it better. Do this and you got my YES, but until then, its NO -
*NO* Secret of Evermore 'Master of Puppets'
Protricity replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This song seems to lack structure. The lead continues even without an accompany, a baseline, or even percussion. The song does not appear to progress, rather it goes into different sections seemingly randomly. There is way too much reverb on the guitar and trumpet. There is no real ending to this song. Work on a more structured plan for this song and perhaps add some bass/percussion to it. Perhaps you could try some strings and what not. The lead is very much alone throughout the majority of this song. NO -
This is exactly what israfel said it was; the original melody over very simple drums. However, in this case, the drums never change and there's some rather odd shakers pannin from left to right at all times. The ending is weak. Work on the melodic aspects of the song and try to promote the original melody in new ways rather than just rehash it. Work on more involved beats as well. NO

*NO* Mega Man 7 'Introduction to Heaven'
Protricity replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
The problem with this song is it doesn't go beyond using the most simplistic rendition of the original melody over a simplistic 4x4 beat. A great deal of repeating where there should be at least on of the following: progression, variation, percussionistic changes. One must go beyond the simple lead and octave bass and promote and reexpress the music. Holding to a genre ideal doesn't justify the excessive repetition and simplicity here. Other problems include the generally messy and poorly planned notation in places like 3:10. Work on the melodic and percussionistic qualities of the song. NO -
OCR01022 - *YES* Xenogears 'Heart Felt Recollections'

Very good stuff. Yet again, suzu has impressed me. I see no problems with this song. Well mastered guitar, good feel. YES -
*NO* Final Fantasy 6 'Terra Ventures On'
Protricity replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Poor recording and very little difference from the original give this a NO Work on length and recording quality. -
OCR01027 - *YES* Super Mario RPG 'Seeking Heat'
Protricity replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
GOD D&M*IT!!!!!!!! Everything was groovy up until 2:40 when everything starts getting off key!!! Its not stylistic or anything, its just off key. gach!! I cant accept the off key section as is. NO -
This is indeed a crudload of samples, but it seriously lacks in the area of bass, melody, progression, arrangement. It seems that when 2/3s of the song is over it decides to start. Extreme amounts of sound effect do not make a song, work on all the above. NO

OCR01025 - *YES* Mega Man 2 'Dr. Wily's Wedding'
Protricity replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This is a direct nsf rip of the original with piano gigasamples. For shame!!! What you think we're runnin here? some kind of midi-rip website? Unbelievable... Oh wait... my bad, I was talkin about a different song. ok, Cool! Dr. Wily piano. Not too variant.. Not too original.. and definately not too long. Ending came way too soon. This song shoudl have been 6 minutes, not under 2:30. Well executed and great style. YES -
Those hard synths kill the beat and the accompany. Its a very poor instrument choice. Those synths singlehandedly ruined the song as far as I'm concerned. NO Other than that, the melody was pretty simplistic. The notes were way crowded together. Work on the arrangement aspect and instrument choice.

This song is quite repetitive and minimalistic. It fits the style quite well, but infact doesnt go anywhere. I very much enjoy the style. This song gets a YES for its well done style.

OCR01035 - *YES* Final Fantasy Tactics 'In Mem'ry of Sir Anthony'
Protricity replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This is pretty damn cool, but rather repetitive. The progression builds however. It doesn't stay at one section and repeats. It continues to build.. I really like that aspect of the song. Overall, the song lacks any real percussion, but the instruments take over that element of the song with their momentum. Theres a few off note sections like at 3:05. It seems very stylistic though. I'm pretty borderline, This one gets a YES based on it's sheer momentum. -
Holy CRUD< What a messy intro. Wow.. this song really impressed me. Not so much the simple beat, or the simple melody, but the singing! Not ace, but damn well for what it is. Ending was sort of weak but it fit. The call-out voice samples are way too overused. Still, very nice on the lyrics and rappin. YES EDIT: Listening to this 2 or 3 more times, I believe that it is indeed way too repetitve/ messy/ Simplistic. The singing wasn't as good as I remember it being. I'll give this song the benifit of my doubt as to why I voted YES on it. It might have been cause I heard it on bad speakers. In case anyone's wondering, it would be extremely rare for me to use bad speakers and I do it only when I'm not home for a long time, bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch.
-
There is indeed a bit of off note-age stickin out through this song. Only other problem would be its rather repetitive nature. Beat is cool, but doesn't change up too much. The song has a very good feel to it though. I'm rather borderline on this one. Resubmit with the off-notes fixed and perhaps more percussive variation alone with melodict variation. NO

OCR01033 - *YES* Final Fantasy 8 'Fantasy Rush'
Protricity replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Pretty messey on the chords at 0:32. Very nice on the beats and the arrangement. I like the guitar. The song is way too short considering what it could have been. The shortness and messy chords in the beginning give this a NO I'd love to see this as a resubmission twice as long with the off notes fixed. Good job. -
*NO* Metroid Prime 'The Prime Selection'
Protricity replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
GRAH, invalid session... Anyway, The offnotes and clipping towards the beginning really made this song fall apart. Work on the clipping and notation detail and work on progressing the song beyond 2:33. NO -
This song has a nice start with the piano arpeggios and such, but then it simplifies into the basic melody of the original with a simple beat and lots of clipping D:. The lead is distorted, but also rather clipped. It effects the drums greatly. Work on mastering and watch that clipping. Some nice ideas here, but very little progression. NO

*NO* Chrono Trigger 'Wind Scene in 12/8'
Protricity replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
First off, 1:26? I dont think so. This song gets right into the melody and plays it out in 3/4 instead of 4/4 vis a vis the original. Then it proceeds to play out the original melody exactly in the same nature substituting arpeggios for actual chords. It ends with an abrupt clipped stop. Please work on actual variation of the theme and watch that clipping NO -
*NO* Destiny of an Emperor 'History of an Emperor'
Protricity replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
OH MANNNNNNNNNNNNN One of my old time favorite games from childhood..... OH MEMORIES>......... NOW IF THIS ISNT BIAS THEN I DONT KNOW WHAT IS!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway... I was scared to death that this would be a midi rip or at least be nothing more than the original melody. BUT NO.. its a rather epic style piano syphony. Starts out simply with the great original melodies. And then... goes into variation on the theme... excellent. Aside from the great bit of nastalgia I got from this, I enjoyed the variation and arrangement very much. KEWL. YES -
OCR01018 - *YES* Ecco 2 'Medusa Mix' *PRIORITY*
Protricity replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I dont hear this song in the gym soundtrack at all. Can someone point out the correct GYM? The song is quite a nice song, but the remix offers little more than the original melody, some drums, and 3 repeats at different tempos. I'm gonna have to hear the original if I'm gonna change my mind about giving it a NO due to lack of variation from melody. -
One of my all time favorites.. DONT disappoint me!@?!? Hmm... nothing too special about the drums. In fact, the drums are rather simplistic and repetitive. The piano is the nice part of this song.l This is sort of a B-rated jazz piece. Its trying to be something, but never quite reaches that point. The drums really went no where. The ending was sorta weak. The melody was decent but followed the original pretty much through the whole thing. All I can say about this is that if the strength of the song was upped a few notches with better beats, more interesting bass, and such it would get a yes, but alas.. NO
