  1. 1. ssds are crazy expensive, and they're more of a power-user thing. if you're building a $1800 dollar system, they're a good option. under that? boost your graphics card or something. you'll get way more of a performance gain. 2. will you actually use 12gb of RAM? you need a 64-bit program in 64-bit Windows to actually have a program utilize all that - and there aren't 64-bit games, in all honesty =) if you're doing music, you've gotta make sure you either use a 64-bit version of your DAW (FL Studio has no 64-bit Windows, for example) or a program like jBridge. also, you have no use for DDR3 2133. the difference in performance from 1333 and 2133 is like a total of 7-9% in high-end real-world performance tests. not to mention that there isn't a motherboard that supports anything over 1600 natively. when they list having that support, you have to OC it to get it stable up at that level. they're just rated for higher heat dispersion. but to spend two or three times as much money for 7%? better graphics cards or cpu, not ram. 3. blu-ray drives function as dvd-rw drives if you buy a combo drive, yeah. as for copying and writing simultaneously, that's a relatively cpu-intensive task. do you need that functionality? 4. if you want a fast processor, you don't want amd. amd processors, even at the same rated "speed", are hotter, run slower, and don't address and utilize memory properly. amd's are ok if you have no money, but to be honest pretty much everything that's worth your time is intel. amd didn't even have modern quad-core processors over 3ghz for years after intel got them. you WILL want a good cpu cooler, however, regardless. you have to match socket for socket (like, LGA 1156 cpus with 1156 motherboards), but certain graphics cards? no, everything works with everything. also, you don't need a sound card. you might want an audio interface, but sound cards are kind of 1995. the only reason they're still around is because people don't realize that they're completely and utterly useless. pretty much, tell me how much money you have to work with, and i'll give you some avenues to pursue on the research front =) my suggestions? an 1156-based motherboard (giga p55a-ud3 if you're OCing or need SATA III, the ud2a[?] otherwise), an i5-760 (quad core, no hyperthreading) or i7-870 (quad with hyperthreading), 6-8gb of RAM max, gtx 260 or higher graphics card (i primarily use nvidia cards, but there are good ati cards as well like the 5770 1gb), a good case with good cooling, a hyper 212+ cpu cooler, and a high-efficiency power supply by a reputable manufacturer like corsair or seasonic.
  2. mag was a lot of fun, and the panels were awesome. nice work, guys =)
  3. joshua whelchel was my secret santa. he gave me some CDs, and delivered "the party" at magfest by giving me booze. huzzah! it was awesome!
  4. i leave at 7am! =D =D =D
  5. ah, got it. interesting.
  6. how does a restaurant have a focus on social justice? do they only allow ex-cons working their way towards redemption work there or something?
  7. it depends on what you're looking for, honestly. i'm a power supply snob, so i spent a lot extra on a high-performance, modular power supply. i also didn't need eight cores for a gaming-only machine with no music or multithreadable apps, so i went with a less-costly cpu. you could build a relatively capable gaming system for under 800$, i think, if you make concessions on the power supply, hard drive (no ssd), and case.
  8. wow, that's pretty old =) you'll love your upgrade, particularly from the x1050.
  9. the only way newer and better is newer and better is if they literally don't change anything derrit thanks for saying what i didn't have the heart to say at first
  10. i'm looking forward to Let Us Cling Together. looks really good.
  11. if you don't mind losing the on/off functionality of the LEDs, you can go with different fans. these are the ones that come with the Storm Scout case, which has LEDs that can be turned on and off independently of the fans themselves. get in touch with me when you're looking to build. we'll see what we can put together.
  12. i think i missed this before. the antagonist is a witch lady who TAKES CONTROL OF ALL TIME. this is the most realistic one?
  13. FIERDONG IS BACK POWAR POWAR POWAR adsf
  14. naw, stevo broke up that show when he went and got a girlfriend =( everyone knows that magfest is supposed to be dudefest! :< it's bardicknowledge, drumultima, superjoe30, and me. taucer was supposed to be in, but he apparently isn't going to make it this year due to some spandex party or something. one person's on the floor, and it's in the overflow hotel 3/10ths of a mile away from the con, but who cares? it's 60$ total!
  15. we might have room in our room! i don't remember who is in it and who isn't.
  16. alright, here's pictures from the build weekend! my personal system as of friday morning. look at those cobwebs! someone hasn't been taking care of it recently =( after disassembling my entire system and cleaning it, here's what we have. the holy grail of 1156 i7 locked processors: the i7-870 2.93ghz quad core (with HT, meaning 8-core) processor. woot! here's his motherboard assembly. i7-870, 4-heatpipe cpu cooler, 12gb of DDR3 1333 RAM, GTX 260 core 216 graphics card, p55-based motherboard. awesome! here's his system in the case. there's a better picture. look at that awesome cable management! the one straggly red wire on the right side got tucked away later, it's the dvd drive's SATA cable. after that, it was time to work on my system while his got windows, programs, updates, and some benchmarking. here's the (really clever) drive cage for my new rackmount music pc. it actually slides out the front with a minimum of effort, allowing you to swap drives without having to screw with taking the whole (enormous) case out. here's a better top-down view of the rackmount case. that's a full ATX motherboard in that monster. it takes up a LOT of space =) but once it's in a rack, it'll look great. pretty quiet, too. here's my machine (in the same model case as bobby's system). i went a little more lightweight than him - a bit better graphics, less raw power, way less ram. it's sitting at 3.3ghz with no issue currently =) there's my current workspace. the rackmounts in the back between the rightmost and middle monitors, and it services the two monitors over the keyboard. the big monitor and normal keyboard handles the gaming system. lots of space, and it works surprisingly well all told. final specs: bobby's pc: i7-870, 12gb ddr3 1333 RAM, gtx 260 core 216, 2tb of WDC Black storage drives, 80gb SSD primary, dvd-rw drive, W7 x64 music pc: i7-860, 4gb ddr3 1333 RAM, basic discrete gfx card, 1.5tb of storage space, 500gb HDD primary, focusrite saffire pro 40 audio interface, W7 x64 gaming pc: i5-760, 4gb ddr3 2200 RAM, gtx 460, 4tb of WDC Green storage drives, 128gb SSD primary, dvd-rw drive, W7 32-bit
  17. i'm getting my pictures online tonight, hopefully, as long as it isn't too busy at work today. once my wife uploads them from her camera, we'll be all set =)
  18. how about every one that has recording inputs.
  19. fun fact: while i've been buzzed once or twice, i've never been flat-out drunk. ever. i don't drink beer, which is most of the reasoning for that. but i like long island ice teas. two big ones in two hours got me mildly buzzed - enough that colors were brighter, but not enough that i had any trouble standing or playing frisbee at the same time.
  20. aw, i'd have taken that about a month ago. i need to update the sale/want thread - i got one now, so i'm good.

  21. holy shit, Man With No Name trilogy? awesome!
  22. got everything set up today. xenon's machine is baking in the corner for the night on a monster Prime 95 8-core stress test for around 12 hours. i got it stable between 3.5 and 3.6ghz with no issues - it loads around 70C under the overclock, but that's not really that bad on air. it jumps almost 30C with an 8-core load, and under a normal load (three cores, 1.5 physical cores utilized) it doesn't go above 65C. so i think it's fine, all told. i actually underclocked the ram slightly to get it stable, but it's humming along pretty solid. averaged 30fps in the Heaven 2.1 benchmark, 2x anti, 4anisotropy, 1920x1200, so i was happy =) the SSD helps with loading a lot as well. never played with one before. my systems are set up as well, although getting w7 64-bit on the music machine - which has no optical drive because i forgot my spare was an IDE - was annoying because i couldn't get a flash drive to boot properly for a while. got it working, and am in the process of transferring like 450gb of data onto the hard drives over a USB connection. going to be a while, i think. i took a ton of pictures that i'll upload this weekend at some point. gotta clean up first, my floor is covered with packing materials!
  23. i would suggest avoiding using TVs if possible for monitors. as nice as it may seem, they don't support computer resolutions (16:9, 60hz) natively, and as a result they often skew screen images slightly. there's also the fact that those screens are meant to be viewed at a distance of 6-8 feet, rather than the normal viewing distance of 18-24 inches for a monitor. you'd be better off getting the 28" monitor i suggested above. at the proper viewing distances and angles, it appears as large as a 52-54" TV, no worries.
  24. today i backed up three of my drives onto the green drive that i picked up, and finished hooking up fans to the rackmount case. i also finished the prelim install stuff on bobby's case. tonight i will drink scotch and possibly start disassembling my personal system. then, tomorrow, i'll start bright and early on the build itself - bobby first, then my music pc, then my gaming system. while bobby's getting an OS install and initial setup, i'll be doing hardware stuff for my systems.
