  1. you don't want water-cooling. you want a better air-cooling rig. it's totally possible to get a system air-cooled in those temperatures. water-cooling is a huge, huge hassle that won't actually be as effective as air-cooling in those conditions. it's only better in situations where you've got a really low ambient temperature and a really high core temperature, like 40 or 50C difference. the thing to remember is that all cooling is relative to the ambient temperature. also, work in celsius =) so, if you're living at a max of 30C for your ambient temperature, the absolute best cooling system in the world will get your CPU to 40C at idle and 45C at load, which is respectable. GPU temps are generally 15-20C higher, which works because they're OK up to almost 100C (if actively cooled) or above (if passively cooled). i'm assuming that your system is reaching into the 70s for CPU and 85C or so for GPU, right? if you're not sure, get the free program HWMonitor (same company that makes CPU-Z) and leave it open to check. a good CPU fan combined with a decent-sized case, proper airflow, and good fans will still be pretty quiet when under load. for example, my case has six high-end fans, a big CPU cooler with a big fan, and a double-slot graphics card (complete with large cooler) in it, and it's just above the ambient noise level when sitting halfway under my desk. the trick is using large fans, since the bigger the fan, the slower it has to spin to push the same or more air as smaller ones. so, avoid 80mm fans, and go with at least 120mm fans at all times. if you have the room, use 120mm fans that are 38mm thick instead of the normal 25mm, since they can push way more air than the normal 120s. pm me some temps, what your computer's loadout is, and maybe a picture of the inside of your case (not really needed), and i'll tell you what to do. or you could sell it and buy my system above
  2. pez, get in touch with me - like i said, i'm flexible. if you give me a price range, i'll see what i can work up.
  3. just a little bump. i've had a few inquiries about adjusting the build slightly. as i said, it's a tweakable build, so if you're not worried about having the flexibility to go SLI in the future or something, i'd be happy to swap out, say, the power supply for a different one, in order to save 70$ or 80$.
  4. except that everyone and their mother knows the SotC mix you did
  5. i'd use melodyne over autotune any day of the week. i'm pretty sure you can use it real-time, but i've never tried it.
  6. b-b-b-bullshit it's not just SC2 overheating those cards, it's shitty drivers by nVidia (seriously, fan issues have been constant over the last two years since they always clock their too far fans down to make them less noisy) combined with terrible hardware on the part of most of the users. MOST games don't have a framerate cap, that's why benchmarks consistently go into the 100s for FPS when you're testing high-end hardware. in other news, thanks to that "bug", i hit 450fps for a second or two the other day. edit: hah! read the liveblogging article that the dude posted. he was playing with a "super-high-end system", with the case door off (thereby destroying any effect his case fans would have, at all) in a house that was 91 degrees! that's, like, the worst thing he could have ever done what's more, his awesome system consists of a four-year-old processor and a three-year-old GPU, based on 65 and 90nm tech respectively. of COURSE it's going to overheat in those conditions. total gold.
  7. his new band, Punch Brothers (mandolin banjo violin upright bass guitar), is absolutely amazing. they do a four-movement thing that's like 26 minutes or so, flat out incredible. so progressive, and yet so down to earth.
  8. yeah, that's a good point. i guess i should say that i haven't ever had to turn it down yet.
  9. i should make a clarification about that - i maxed SC2 on a 1920x1200 monitor, which is another 120 pixels larger than a 1080p tv =)
  10. hey, everyone. for those who don't know, i build custom computers. i've recently been thinking that i haven't had a computer sale in a while. well, time to fix that! i've got a few lightly used parts i want to sell, and i think that this is a great way to pass them onto someone else. here's what you'd be getting. this is a tweakable build, of course, that would be a monster at gaming, music, video editing, and just about anything else you can think of. -dual-core intel 2.93ghz processor -hand-sanded and lapped CPU cooler/fan system -4gb of ram -GTX 260 core 216 896mb vram - one of the best price-to-performance graphics cards ever (originally around 240$) -1tb hard drive -750w 80 plus GOLD power supply - 80 plus GOLD refers to the efficiency - basically, this is one of the most efficient power supplies available (originally around 200$) -dvd burner, motherboard, case pictured above (cooler master elite 335) -windows xp SP3 i'll overclock this CPU to at least 3.4, possibly as high as 3.75ghz, for no extra charge! =) in doing so, i'll ensure that there's no excess heat or anything that could damage it for the long term, meaning that the included clock rate would be able to be used 24/7. i'll also overclock the RAM and graphics card as necessary to ensure highest possible performance overall. considering that this setup just maxed out StarCraft II for me earlier today on a 1080p TV, you should be able to use this setup to do the same on Diablo 3 and FFXIV when it comes out. total cost? a cool $950. like i said, there are upgrade options available. if you want to: -upgrade from that case to the storm scout, a great steel case with a sturdy handle build into the top, add another 40$. -upgrade to a 3.16ghz dual-core processor, add 70$. these are the easiest to overclock - i should be able to hit 3.75ghz no problem, and possibly as high as 4ghz or better. -upgrade to a quad core processor, add either 80$ (i5-750, 2.66ghz) or 175$ (i7-860, 2.8ghz with hyperthreading for 8 cores). i'll still overclock these, but i might not be able to get up to 3.4 without changing some voltages. should still be long-term stable. -upgrade to more hard drive space, let me know how much you want. another terabyte would be about 90$, and it scales from there. -add another dvd burner, add 25$ -add blu-ray functionality, add 60$ for a reader (separate from the dvd burner drive) or 110$ for a burner. -upgrade to windows 7, add another 30$ (or i'll use the key from your current system if you've got one with w7 on it already) contact me for more details! if you'd prefer to talk over the phone, PM me and i'll get you my phone number. happy summer, OCR people!
  11. keep in mind that, depending on which chipset your motherboard is based on, you might not be able to hot-swap or hot-plug eSATA drives. they might have to be on and connected when the computer's booted. just my two cents =) internal connections are always preferable, IMO.
  12. i got 42/50. most of the ones i missed were like New Super Mario Brothers - i didn't know how to entire it properly. hooray for working at a game store! i did like thirty before i missed one =)
  13. hi stop spending money on hallucinogens and give it to me
  14. get in touch with me when you're looking at a desktop =) i do hackintosh systems as well as PC builds.
  15. i know i keep saying this, but a computer to run SC2, DIII, and all these other awesome PC games coming out is much cheaper than what people think. based on the system specs for SC2, i could probably do something for around 600$ - or even less - that still plays them on pretty decent settings for a big monitor.
  16. no, it's like saying that someone thinks that garth brooks is bad because they don't like country or, more correctly, that a virtuoso like chris thile (the guy from nickel creek) is bad because they don't like bluegrass.
  17. if he was working with stuff that large on a regular basis, he wouldn't be asking for help here but seriously, even just the laptop version of an i3-530 would be light-years beyond that ancient t7700.
  18. what he meant is that your performance will really suffer from using a laptop for streaming massive samples like that, and if you're using it quite a bit it'll eventually kill your HD faster than general use will. but we're talking three years vs. four, not one month vs. four years.
  19. i'm just teasing him, andy =) yeah, everyone talks about 8gb as being this godly amount, yet i rarely see anyone actually utilizing it efficiently. not really worth the money, IMO.
  20. you could, you know, get better at the game
  21. it was WAY overpowered before, though. everyone just used tesla, with one FT. it was kind of bogus. i think the new tesla is awesome for what it is - a support weapon. combine it with the power fist as an offhand and the autogun/p-rifle as a primary and you're a one-man wrecking machine.
  22. this piece is a gem. the people who think tha this song is bad are allowing their general prejudices against rap or hip-hop to show through. yes, this is the internet. in order to be cool, you have to know the memes, listen to obscure (usually shitty) artists, visit 4chan, and be ready to fire off smarmy responses to anything different than the norm. this is different than the norm. therefore, it's being ridiculed. that auto-response is bullshit. for those who don't know, olr came OUT of ocr - meaning that mixes like this do have a place here. ous and ocr have had a history that's been checkered at best - meaning that the fact that it's community 'insiders' doing the track means jack. oh, and strader, you're an idiot if you think rap is the easiest genre ever. give it a shot and tell me how easy it is
  23. 8gb means 64-bit. as long as everything can run on it, you'll be fine. even if you're planning on upgrading to 8 down the line, make sure you've got a 64-bit OS. also, ssd? really? buy a 1tb internal drive and don't stream from a USB/FW external instead. more worth your money. more is that you're buying this nice system (well, decent if you want to use a mac and have a laptop...two choices i wouldn't make), and then you're going to run REAPER on it. just use some of the cash you're getting by not buying 8gb of ram and get a real DAW. biggest bottleneck on that system is the old processor. do macbooks have i3 processors yet? if not, at least try to get a bit better than that cpu, since the merom processors (it's a T7700, right?) were introduced mid-2006. i'm assuming that you know that you could easily get a monster desktop and a great notebook if you went PC, and it'd cost much less, right?
