not required, but can prove helpful. especially when something is being played live, what "makes sense" is often correct.

transcription can be satisfying, but tough work, especially for the perfectionists among us. i have some degree of perfect pitch, and it helps oodles, but chords and whatnot still get me all the time. and sometimes i have to crank up the volume to hear "wtf -is- that note" and later i discover that i really shouldn't have been playing it that loud at all. whoops.

so the synth has envelopes but not LFO controls built-in? hmmm...you might just have to use automation to automate whatever parameter you want to modulate. sounds tedious but it's actually not that bad--in fact you can use the formula controller or the peak controller (which has a built in LFO) and the Last Tweaked parameter->"Link to controller" function and you should get the desired effect. i know nothing in regards to your other question.

Remixing - How is it done?
DDRKirby(ISQ) replied to Legion Kreinak's topic in Music Composition & Production
meaning they'd have to have found some way to rip the sound...are you asking how you'd do that? im not an expert on psf files so I wouldn't know. I know that it's quite possible for nes/snes/etc but again, i'm not sure how the sequencing for psf's goes so i wouldn't know. someone's probably found a way, though. -
Remixing - How is it done?

again, most remixes here do NOT aim to emulate the sound of the original. (what would be the point?) -
Weird exporting problem
DDRKirby(ISQ) replied to Lemonectric's topic in Music Composition & Production
that might mess up the mastering, tho. sounds like you have a really weird problem. Look for weird things happening with automation, that's a possible culprit. Save a backup copy of your flp, then make a new version and start messing around with the playlist. Isolate the section where the drop happens. Does it still happen? Drop all the patterns except for the percussion patterns. Does it still happen? Try disabling channels as well. Anything that might provide a clue. you could post the project file too, if you want other people to have a look at it/see if the same thing happens. -
Where do I get good drum samples?
DDRKirby(ISQ) replied to Nicholestien's topic in Music Composition & Production
processing them the right way, too. though of course you can't do all that much if your bass drum sounds like a kid hitting a cardboard box. -
FL Pet peeves/next version needs
DDRKirby(ISQ) replied to Zephyr's topic in Music Composition & Production
I've always wondered, is smart disable left enabled when you render to wav? I guess i could do a test. hold on for results. edit: yay, i just checked--smart disable is turned off (in other words, all fx are always on) when you render. (tested using a long delay on a single sample). I want to know why they took out the "levels adjustment" control knobs in the layer channel settings. I liked using those for automation, but they're gone now for some resaon... -
Fruity Loops Tutorial
DDRKirby(ISQ) replied to Tentacle Porn's topic in Music Composition & Production
are you looking for "how do i use x feature" tutorials or "how do i sound better" tutorials? dont be too lazy now it's all out there, you'll get it. -
Fruity does have a "smart disable" feature that auto-disables effects (and in FL7, generators) that aren't currently being used. usually you can enable it on everything, and nothing will be different, except CPU will be spared. be careful about long delays or reverbs and the like though, as it might cut those off prematurely.

nope, sorry ; Yeah it really sucked how quickly FLMC went downhill after being moved there. The idea was a bit different than what's going on here, since it was a competition, but i guess the basic concept was pretty much the same. Well, at least I ended up getting one of my best mixes out because of FLMC5. way back when, there was also this massive FL collab, with Beatdrop and Prophecy and Skypnyk a bunch of other people all adding stuff to one big project file. neat stuff, i still have the flp...

Remixing - How is it done?
DDRKirby(ISQ) replied to Legion Kreinak's topic in Music Composition & Production
Since you're using FL studio, I would recommend getting around to looking at dragor's tutorials if you get a chance. They're not a one-stop solution, but they've got some neat ideas regarding "fullness" as he calls it, and it sounds like it might address your questions. keep in mind that songs aren't usually ALWAYS full--there's gotta be some variation, for instance one section of the song might have the bass drop out, or maybe suddenly everything goes away except for a low pad. This is how you achieve variation... There's also a writing lurking around somewhere about the "four-man combo" approach (it is four, isn't it? correct me if im wrong guys) but I can't find it at the moment. essentially, you can separate your instrumentation into drummer, bassist, lead, harmony...you get the idea. as for remixes, most of the remixes on this site use vastly differing instrumentation than the original (though some use sampled sound FX). That's why we have Castlevania done in rock guitar, as opposed to Castlevania done in bleepy square waves. ...right now you still need to get much much more familiar with the program and the tools, it seems like. then you can worry about the more advanced stuff. as for the production aspect, start listening to really good songs, particularly songs of the genre you want to produce (i'm guessing some kind of electronic music based on what you've said already). analyze the song--what's going on in each section of the song? what's the overall structure? how are chord progressions, layered sounds, call-and-response melodies, etc etc etc used? also, if you haven't already read Zircon's remixing tips (found in the "guides and tutorials" section here) i would strongly recommend it. -
underruns happen a lot more frequently when you have a lot of things going on in a song (makes sense), so just because you can set it at 2 ms while FL is doing nothing absolutely does not mean that you can afford to use the same setting when you're actually having it playback a song.

REASON 4 - it's actually here!
DDRKirby(ISQ) replied to anosou's topic in Music Composition & Production
amen to that. of course, i'm using ReWire now...=p -
The (ISQ) is there solely for this purpose, as no one else should even know what it means. I think I remember running across another DDRKirby once, but nothing much ever came of it.

Remixing - How is it done?
DDRKirby(ISQ) replied to Legion Kreinak's topic in Music Composition & Production
yes, if i use a midi it pretty much destroys my creativity. -
the best way to attract interest would probably be to post an example of your work, yeah?

Your opinons on these Sequencers.
DDRKirby(ISQ) replied to Nicholestien's topic in Music Composition & Production
reason rewired in FL can be sexy. -
oh, i also get an "unknown exception" when I try to open Avaris's rns file. is this just me?
-
bleh. i've got producer's block. i'll try again laterz.
-
I've been watching this--I dunno if I'll have time but I'll try and give this next round a shot if I can.

sorry, maybe i should have been a bit more clear. You go to options>properties, click the recording box, then select OK. Then you get a "Recording Control" mixer window, which lets you select a recording source (check the one you want to use) and adjust the volume levels. That doesn't give you any recording capability on its own--that's where your own program comes in, whether it be sound recorder, audacity, total recorder, or harddiskogg. What I'm saying is that the problem might be in the Recording Control--either you have the wrong source selected, or your volume is set way too low, or something.
-
sometimes you can do this in audacity (or even sound recorder) without any special program, depending on what options you have in your recording controls (doubleclick the volume control icon in the taskbar and then options->properties->recording). otherwise I usually see Total Recorder as the recommended software for capturing wave out. as for your program, if i had to put my money on it I'd say those normalization controls might be whats throwing stuff off. actually, since you say it's really faint, then maybe it's just your recording volume is set way too low. Looks like over on the right hand side of the window there's a volume control--try cranking that thing up. try recording to wav first so you dont have to worry about the ogg format being a problem (though it shouldn't be) edit: oh, so that big tall thing on the right is a meter, not a volume control. but it looks like that button right underneath it points you to some kind of mixer which lets you select recording sources and adjust recording volumes. try that first (it might actually point you to the same thing as options->properties->recording in windows).

ah niice...I always liked this song...
