  1. This track combines 2 songs from the game Shovel Knight into a sad, lamenting song with vocals. It features the songs 'Requiem of Shield Knight' and 'A Thousand Leagues Below'. It was made in one week for the Knights of the ReMix doubles compo. Composition and arrangement by Jorito and evktalo, lyrics by evktalo and vocals by Xarnax42. Mixed and mastered by Andy Booth. We did some more polishing and finally deem the song finished. We're very happy with the final result, but we're curious what you guys think of it so feedback is appreciated! Source tracks: http://virt.bandcamp.com/track/the-requiem-of-shield-knight http://virt.bandcamp.com/track/a-thousand-leagues-below-iron-whale-manami-matsumae ReMix: https://soundcloud.com/jorito/shovel-knight-shovels-lament Or if you prefer it with visuals: Source breakdown: 0:00-0:07 Celeste intro, based on the Requiem lead at 0:03-0:05. 0:08-0:16 Cello enters, riff is from A Thousand Leagues Below @ 0:55-0:57. 0:16-0:32 Variation of the main melody from Requiem with different bass. 0:32-1:04 Two first thirds of the first verse, based on Requiem's 0:02-0:24 (though on 0:02-0:12 more clearly); ATLB 0:55 riff from the intro features at 0:55-1:04. 1:04-1:35 Final third of the verse follows the 0:25-0:47 portion of the Requiem (ATLB 0:55 riff again ata 1:12-1:20). 1:35-2:08 The chorus is based on ATLB 0:55-1:05, which is easiest to hear 1:43-1:52 and 2:04-2:08. The vocal melody is based on 0:57 and 1:00 of the source. 2:08-2:40 The second verse follows 0:25-0:47 in the requiem. The cello adds some ATLB from 0:19-0:24 at 02:31-02:39. 02:40-3:10 Is the second chorus. 3:10- 3:44 From ATLB 0:19-0:36. 3:45-4:00 From ATLB 0:36-0:46 (acoustic guitar), trumpet solo based on the main Requiem melody. 4:00-4:16 The same, actually. especially audible at the end. 4:16-4:32 From ATLB 0:46-0:55. 4:32-end Repeats of the chorus (continuing the ATLB coverage from 0:55->). Lyrics: sky is clear the thunder gone no gold at the end of the rain we fought hard we fought long nothing left at the end of the day I'd be king you, the queen we'd beat them, we would drive them away turns out we were not the heroes we were made out to be chorus: if I lose my place you're there, you'll catch my fall promises break and you are still my all with you there shielding me I have faith, I can dig our way through we've got all the treasure we need if I lose my place you're there, you'll catch my fall promises break and you are still my all (middle part) nothing remains apart from the ash, still warm ambitions fade and you are still my all though I've lost my grace you're there, you'll catch my fall catch my fall catch my fall catch my fall Enjoy!
  2. (Yes, i know i submitted another piece for mod review recently, but i am kinda stuck with that now for now) Link: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/93823550/The%20Forest%20of%20Melancholy.mp3 Name: The Forest of Melancholy Sources: Mining Melancholy and Forest Interlude, both from Donkey Kong Country 2 Comments: I consider this one pretty much done arrange wise, maybe a non looping ending ending could be done (But i kinda like loops hahahaha), aside from that i think did arrange, blend and mix both pieces together pretty fine.
  3. So here I am running Cubase and Reason trying to get them to play, and all they do is when the music starts to pick up I get the gremlins and all the sound goes to hell, in this grabbled mess so i figured when "life gives you lemons, make lemonade...then throw it in Life's face for giving you lemons when you asked for oranges" -P.H Yeah so here it is, any thoughts? Im aware the drums can be repetitive, but that is whats holding this song back and Ive tried nothing and Im all out of ideas!!! Seriously though, I need much help with these drums. (preemptive shout out to timaeus222, Whats up?) (I know its a long play, but bare with me here) https://soundcloud.com/daniel-lesuer/gremlins
  4. Meet the Workshop Moderators! The purpose of this thread is to give any would-be workshop denizen the ability to best utilize the staff here. In other words, here's what you need to know about each one of us! Each of us are here to help you grow as a musician and (hopefully) into a posted ReMixer. However, not all of us operate the same way, and we each have different backgrounds. Some of us are in different time zones, and we all have projects, lives, family, and music of our own to attend to. Nonetheless, the reason we're workshop mods is because we each have a passion for helping others improve. ambient (yes, with a small "a") Real name: Alex Gventsadze Location: Georgia Occupation: Professional Services Preferred method of contact: PM Also reachable by: TBD Five OSTs I recommend: Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Streets of Rage, Streets of Rage 2, Tekken Tag Tournament 2. About me: Far from a professional musician (though I have a bit of a background in classical piano and upright bass), my involvement in any kind of creative process associated with music is limited to what I do on OCR. I mainly focus on electronic music and could offer only limited input when it comes to other musical styles. I've been a part of the OCR community since the early 2000s. Argle Real name: Adam Kirby Location: Tinley Park, IL, USA Occupation: Programmer analyst Preferred method of contact: PM Five OSTs I recommend: Chrono Trigger , King's Bounty: the Legend, Rayman, Kirby's Epic Yarn, Super Mario Galaxy About me: just a dude who likes to make teh remixes. Been at the music thing for over a decade. I play violin and guitar but I consider that secondary to composing computer-based music. I try to write in a variety of genres to prevent myself from getting bored, and would like to think I can give feedback on pretty much any genre. Look forward to helping people out! Gario Real name: Gregory Nourse Location: Palos Verdes Estate, California, USA Occupation: Electrical Engineer (Student), General Contractor Preferred method of contact: Skype (TheGreatGario), PM Also reachable by: AIM, Newgrounds PM (Gario), FB Five OSTs I recommend: Dragonseed, Megaman Soccer, Final Fantasy 8, Utopia (SNES), Saga 2/3 (Final Fantasy Legends, in USA) About me: I have my degree in Music Theory and Composition from UNM (back in 2008... hard to believe it's been that long already), and as such I've actually had a lot of experience listening to all sorts of styles of music (both tonal and atonal). As such, one area I'm particularly keen on is arrangement, voice leading and orchestration of the track. As of 2008 I've done a lot of work on my own learning the ins and outs of production, so I can give some solid advice on that front, as well. I'd like to be as diligent as possible on these boards, though unfortunately I've only had time to browse them actively once a week, roughly. If you send out a PM I'd be happy to direct some Mod Review justice your way, though - a friendly request often serves you well! Rozovian Real name: Ad G Location: Finland Occupation: TBD Preferred method of contact: PM Also reachable by: AIM, Skype, email Five OSTs I recommend: Seiken Densetsu 3, Halo 3 ODST, Bastion, Super Metroid, Mirror's Edge About me: I complain about the compression in your mix, and leave figuring out source usage to the other mods. And I have a beard. XPRTNovice Real name: Joseph Zieja Location: Northern Virginia (changes almost yearly) Occupation: Voiceover Artist Preferred method of contact: OCR PM at the moment Also reachable by: Skype, mIRC sometimes, pigeon OSTs I recommend: Xenogears, Persona 3 About Me: Relatively new to OCR (joined January 2012), but I've been a musician for over 20 years. My highlight seems to be the amount of instruments I play (at widely varying different skill levels of course), which include 4 saxophones, clarinet, guitar, mandolin, trumpet, french horn, flute, piano, and oud. I'm also a voiceover artist and fantasy/science fiction author on the side (hopefully some good news about my books coming in 2014). I'm glad to be a part of the OCR community and now I'm thrilled to be a part of the staff as well. I look forward to growing with you all. You guys can look me up here. Also work as a composer for edgebee studios. Got a degree in music tech. Etc. Reason i'm posting here is because I don't frequent the boards, and i'm technically still a WS Mod. but I DO like to look and help out people with their tracks, particularly if they come to me in person. Its better to send me a direct message (AIM/IRC/Skype) rather than PM because otherwise I may think "i'll look later" and not get around to it, but contact me and i'll more than happily help out anyone who needs it. I wouldn't class myself as particularly great with a specific area of critique but i'm a good all rounder and can probably give a decent idea if something will pass the panel or not. Hit me up on Skype!

  7. Update 08/12/12! +Different pianos used +Mixing/Mastering fixed +Altered sections After the *NO*, I'm fixing this up for resubmission. Apparently - according to most of the judges - the arrangement was fine, so I've upgraded a few of the issues they had with the sample used and feel of the piano. Submitting for Mod Review just to get a final opinion before I resubmit this for good. Tindeck - Free MP3 download: Kingdom Hearts - Hollow Bastion (Piano Version).mp3 So this is a 5-piano remix of the Hollow Bastion Theme from Kingdom Hearts. 8. First time submitting something here, but I figured it'd be worth a shot haha. So this is a remix of the game gear version of "Scrap Brain Zone" from Sonic the Hedgehog that I did last year for the Sonic Stadium's 2011 album. It includes some "cameos" like Never Let It Go from Sonic the Fighters, Sonic 3's Boss theme, and a tiny bit of Mad Gear Act 3 from Sonic 4: Episode 1. I touched up the mix a bit since it's release, but I guess this is where I see if it's up to snuff or not XD. EDIT: (Current/Final version here) Building the Empire - Wolfblur https://www.box.com/s/sku7qconzdrijnqkilxk And the original source if anyone is rusty on what the song is:
  9. Hey! I've been experimenting with remixing stuff for quite a while, but I'd never get anything quite satisfying to me. I think I might finally be coming up with something good. I'd like to know what you guys think about it. It's still far from finished, though. Source: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2IXKsYHGJ0 Remix: http://www.tindeck.com/listen/hvmd Thanks! 10. Remix: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4556435/wang_you_want.mp3 Source: Previous version: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4556435/wang_you_want_old.mp3 This is a remix I originally did about a year ago, but never got around posting it all the way to the judges. Thought I might give it another spin now. The original Shadow Warrior soundtrack is pretty much pseudo-asian ambient, Everybody OFF!!! included, so I expanded that concept and worked in the beats, bigger percussions and more realistic oriental instruments. The result is this sort of dubstep-ish thing. "Shanghai step", I call it. I'm marking this as "finished" (because it pretty much is IMO), but maybe someone could lend me a fresh pair of ears and tell me if there are some areas that still need improving before I label it for mod-review and forward it to judging. It would be much appreciated.
  11. This is a remix of 'To Galaxy' from the Halo 4 soundtrack. It uses the percussion stem from the original, and everything else is made by me. Some of the strings got a little whiny, but in most cases everything is going perfectly so far. Any suggestions/criticisms? EDIT: The track starts at about 0:11. Sorry about that. XD EDIT: And it's finished! Soundcloud Link
  12. Inspired mostly by "Skyward," I decided to take a crack at remixing the Ballad of the Windfish. I think it's coming along nicely so far, though it certainly has its flaws. But I'd like to get opinions on how you all think the first minute or so is sounding, since I'm still relatively new at this. Thoughts, anyone? 13. Hey guys! I'm coming at ya with a brand new remix from Pokémon Black and White! It's the theme that plays within Celestial Tower and Dragonspiral Tower, named Tower of Heaven by Junichi Masuda and Go Ichinose. It's got some pretty creative stuff in it! Give it a listen and tell me what you think! Remix: http://www.box.net/shared/4gyv5csg4c Source:
  14. Edit: Changed to Mod Review -- thanks for the feedback so far. This was my entry for the FFVI remix competition. I'd say it's finished, but if there's any feedback you guys have on it, I'm open to input. I tried to keep the playful nature of the original intact, while also updating it and making it a little more mysterious. I kept little nods to the original in it like the spin down to the timpani hit, and the filtered version of the original later in the tune. This is my first post in this forum too, so if I'm doing something wrong, let me know. I tried to read all the FAQs first. Source: Remix: http://soundcloud.com/fictionalhead/fictionalhead-in-the-zone
  15. It's been a year! How is everyone! Now, now, I didn't get rejected, but I felt like I still had a LOT of work to do before my first song was submitted, and I'd like to know what you all think ( And what finishing touches I could use. ) I included new drums, instruments and even gave the chorus a little hook as well as throwing a small reference in there! I also started from scratch with the EQ'ing! I still feel like there was more I could add, so please lemme know what I can do to improve! This is the new! And this is the old!
  16. I cant remember if I posted this one yet, but here goes. http://soundcloud.com/aires/air3s-do-not-feed-the-chao
  17. The original, " ", and the remix, "Rat Race". When I first started working on this song, I had planned on subbing it. But now that I'm finished, I'm not sure on how it would be judged as far as being recognizable. I'd also like to get some general feedback on the song and see what you guys think. Enjoy.
  18. EDIT 7.17.12: https://www.box.com/s/1bc69db9a78c6e77c3f9 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EDIT 6.21.12 quickfix ending: https://www.box.com/s/9c96e0a27f97eeab5f2b k, this is [technically] my 5th or 6th resub (some of the judges will get it:oops:). i think i've finally got it sounding like how it is in my head. sorry if it sounds too repetitive in some parts. i'd like to also submit this to Dj Cutman's GameChops as well, so i'm trying to get it to come across as something a live electrohouse dj/band would do. specifically/obviously ratatat, tim exile, and mord fustang. judges suggestions: http://ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=37634&highlight=chameleon 6.20.12 DL link: http://www.mediafire.com/?iu6ybj6exm3ubab *note, i've added the old version in the zip as well for reference to the judges' comments, and so you can barf at how much sloppier it was before. source breakdown: (main theme) (bridge/breakdown) (outro counter-melody) (outro counter-melody)stopwatch: 0:00-0:32 original buildup (besides the obvious nod to mj) 0:33-1:06 "Devil's MArsh" melody broken up 1:07-1:40 "Devil's MArsh" changed some chords and phrasings a bit here 1:41-1:58 "Devil's Marsh" main theme 1:59-2:13 "Devil's Marsh" bass line continues, random solo on top 02:14-3:54 "Fantasy" starts with just variations on the chords, then the melody theme builds up 3:55-4:27 original buildup, siren part mimics the drill/blaster thingy from "Devil's Marsh" 4:28-5:34 "Devil's Marsh" in the foreground, "Cave" and "Main theme" in the background as the counter-melody 5:35-6:08 "Cave" and "Main" melodies combined please give as much critiques as possible, it won't hurt mah feelingzes. already on my to-do list: -lower the bass freq a bit -fix the snare glitch at the end i think these got f'ed up when i ran it through real converter because it's fine in my DAW and i worked on that ending long enough to cut it off in tempo.
  19. Resubmitted. Wish me luck! I've noticed an incredibly depressing lack of accepted Mario and Luigi remixes on this site, so I've set out to get at least one of this site. This is a remix of Superstar Saga's main theme, which I've titled "Land of the Beans." It's just a WIP so far, so all suggestions and advice is sought after and much appreciated. This is my first attempt at an OCR-worthy remix, and I'd really appreciate any sort of tip. I'm pretty new to most of the technical aspects, though I've been at it for years, so criticize away! Constructively, of course, but there's no suggestion too big or too small. FINAL (rejected) VERSION: http://www.box.com/s/rne6x9o334ua3y1nr8pr YouTube Link: Final Resubbed Version (Awaiting Judgement): https://www.box.com/s/522be0383ca78af440a9 VERSION 2: So I've made a second version with a much more interesting introduction, and some overall improvements. But I still feel like some places are a bit busy. I varied up the chord velocity a bit, though perhaps not enough. Just some overall improvements, but no major changes besides the intro. Minor changes include less bass panning, trombones for the chords, Low Shelf Filter and High Shelf Filter for the cellos/trombones and piano, respectively, and extra percussion. VERSION 2.5: Some more small EQing things, in addition to an extra snare, and one version with variations in the piano's timing, and one version without it, so the difference can be compared. Still, all suggestions and opinions are much sought-after and much appreciated. VERSION 3: First major update. About an extra minute of music added, lots of effects and things. No major production changes, just composition. After the scream, I plan on changing the chord progression as we get into the bridge, and I might add some speckles of other songs here and there. But I'd especially like some opinions on the sound clips—I'm trying to decide if I should cut back on them or not. VERSION 3.5: Changed piano chords to arpeggios in the vibraphone interlude, changed around the sound effect section. I'd really like some opinions on the two changes made in this version in comparison to v3. VERSION 4: Added smattering of other M&L songs here and there, added a guitar to compliment the tubular bells in the first section of the song, and added some more small production changes, mostly with volume and echo and things. VERSION 4.5: Took off chorus on guitar and changes some effects to make it less muddy. Removed the pitch bend, as well. Took off all cutoff and resonance from lead, but I'm planning on adding a resonance automator soon. Lightened reverb on orchestral tracks, brightened piano, trombones, cellos, and all the interludes that include other songs. My main concern with this here is that there isn't quite enough reverb in the interludes to make them blend well with the rest of the song, and possibly the same issue, albeit to a lesser extent, with the trombone and cello chords. Though with the trombone chords, I'm hearing an occasional note that's much stronger than the others. I can't tell if it's distracting, or just varied enough to work. VERSION 5: Second major update, this time just for production. I added a phaser automation to the lead, added percussive buildups for transitions, added a compressor to the kick and EQed out the drums a little more. I changed the harpsichord to a piano in the Beanbean Castle interlude, got rid of backing chords in the vibraphone bridge and lightened the drums to better fit the mood. I changed the bass in all of the interludes to that of "Happy Adventure Delightful Adventure," from Super Mario RPG, added back a smidgen of reverb to the strings etc., and lowered the volume a lot to make them sound more in-place. I also added some root reversions in the piano chords to make them a bit more interesting. VERSION 5.5: Brightened the piano more, screwed with EQ a bit more. Changed the lead to what I think is much better. Changed the strings in the Chucklehuck Woods section to clarinets. That's about it, but this version sounds very different from the previous. VERSION 6: Added a bridge and a finale. I'm loving the finale, but the ending could use some work. The bridge, on the other hand, I'm not so fond of. My aim was to make something decent so I could work on the finale without the piece as a whole having a big weird gap. It needs a lot of work, but I'm open to ideas as to what I should do. Regardless, I'd like any sort of suggestion, still. The finale might seem just a tad busy, and I think transitions could use some small adjustments, but I'm still not sure how exactly to go about it. So please do give all sorts of constructive criticism. VERSION 6.5: It's complete! I added some marimbas and tubular bells in the last few sections, added percussion to the ending, and made some overall touch-ups. I'm now done the remix, and completely open to constructive criticisms of any kind. VERSION 7: Many of Flexstyle's mod review suggestions taken. I took out the low range of the strings and brass, but I'm not sure if I like it better or worse. I'm leaning towards better, but I'm still a little iffy. Though the more powerful of the brass chords stick out more with the EQ change. I'm thinking I'm going to fix that. I also cleaned up the finale, taking a few extra lead tracks out. I think I didn't, but I'd like to know if anybody thinks I took too much out of the end. Anyway, as always, all critiques welcome! VERSION 7.1: Softened the trombones (all of them, not just the chords), and added reverb and delay to the lead at 2:00. Also tightened the trombone chords so they sync better with the cellos and piano. VERSION 7.2: More EQ fixes, changed the lead a bit in the end VERSION 8: Updated with Rozo's suggestion and some more tips, such as a bit of sidechaining. This is the finalized and submitted version. Wish me luck! 20. Hey all, I'm rather new to remixing, but I just finished this mix today and was thinking about subbing it to OCR. I would like to have another set of ears or two to listen to it and give any suggestions as to what to tweak. I've listened to it so many times that any subtle EQ changes seem to sound the same, haha. Here it is on Tindeck - http://tindeck.com/listen/erkc Any comments are appreciated!
  21. Hi everyone, It's been some time since I've been around here, but I'm always keeping my ears peeled for excellent new remixes from the site. I recently had the pleasure of arranging some cues from the soundtrack to a little game called Sword & Sworcery by my friends at Superbrothers and Capybara Games. They held an 'AV Jam', calling for fan art, and this was my submission. Do yourselves a favour and check out some of the extraordinary entries that showed up: http://sworcery.tumblr.com/ The original soundtrack was written by the very talented Jim Guthrie, and my arrangement is intended to show the material off in a different light, perhaps revealing some aspects of it that weren't immediately obvious in their original form. I'd love to share the finished product with you, and I look forward to your thoughts and feedback: http://soundcloud.com/mathazzar/maybe-a-time-of-miracles

  23. I have now been to the judges panel with this mix and I have a better understanding of what I need to do to fix this thing up. According to the judges, there is nothing wrong with the arraignment, so the only thing that I have needed to work on is getting better sounds into the mix. The major focus was to replace the lousy percussion samples that I was using in my first attempt. I have now given the song a makeover and I feel that it is very close to being ready for submission. However, I would like to make sure that I didn't miss anything. Feel free to tell me what you think, and, as always, feel free to be super picky! 24. I guess I haven't subbed anything in a while, and it's been even longer since I had a piece in this forum. This one's really grown on me. Plus, if it gets accepted, it'll keep my streak of temple-y/jungle-y jams to-be-posted on OCR I put this together in a night for the Street Fighter compo a few months back. Throw me all the crits you got. Thanks a ton Sources: Remix: Demon Syndrome pH
  25. Okay, after waaaaaay too much procrastination, I finally went back and remastered "Of Men and Monsters" one more time. This time, I've overhauled the previously repetitive drumlines, tremendously improved the mixing and mastering, and added some stereo madness to the lead synth, among other little tweaks here and there. An old mix of this tune was submitted to and rejected by the OverClocked ReMix judges' panel, who told me the arrangement was awesome but the audio quality... not so much. In the process of revamping this medley, I learned a TON about mixing and mastering which has proven valuable to my original productions as well, and now I think I'm about where I want to be in terms of production skill. Hopefully they'll agree. I'm gonna post this for a last round of feedback from the OCR forum community before submitting it to the judges' panel once again. "Of Men and Monsters" is a brostep medley of five tracks from the Pokémon video game series, spanning every model of GameBoy and the best years of my childhood. Source material is as follows: Pokémon Red/Green/Blue: "Team Rocket Hideout"; " "Pokémon Gold/Silver: "Rocket Hideout"; "Unown Tune" Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire: " "Download from SoundCloud! http://soundcloud.com/synthony/of-men-and-monsters-pokemon
