End of the Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD Format War?

Local AM news station KCBS 740 (here in the Bay Area) is reporting from a Toshiba insider that the Format War may be over as soon as tomorrow morning.

Toshiba is reportedly holding a board meeting on whether or not to abandon the format, which would allow Sony's Blu-Ray to take hold as the industry standard from now on. Obviously, there was a thread about IGN's article earlier, but I felt that this was newsworthy enough to start a new one.

I think that sound byte has the interview in there, so check it out.

Hopefully, you can return your HD-DVD player or trade it in, because even if Toshiba doesn't give up tomorrow, you'll still be hard-pressed to find new content...

The good thing is that now the early adopters don't have to go it alone in high def DVD hardware - built-in HD TV and Blu-Ray units are coming soon...

Yeah thats what we'll probably do return it.

The built in HD TV thing is gonna be sweet though! I think returning it will be worth it. We'll probably get the blu-ray unit I've heard good things about this "blu-ray."

I've just got one thing to say:

Good thing I never bought the HD-DVD drive for the 360, and that I'm planning on buying a PS3 one day.

I've come close to buying that HD-DVD add-on for the 360 with the sales going around, but the high def movies just cost more than I'm willing to pay (and that is not much at all). Good thing I saved my money.

betamax and VHS went at it for over a decade. This is quick in the realm of market warfare. I cant say i am surprised all that much. A string of major and public victories had to make Toshiba very nervous. Then walmart canceling HD DVD sales and Netflix dropping the format finished the deal.

Speaking of Beta-Max and VHS, Which format has more porn available on it?, If the answer is Blu-Ray I wouldn't be surprised.:-P

Also: Beta-Max was better then the VHS and if Blu-Ray lost it would be the second time the better format lost which would have really made me sad.

It was VHS and HD DVD scored the porn industry here. However those who knew movies went with a better format. It was a chain reaction effect. First it was one studio then a bunch then retailers.

It's actually surprising...the porn industry has a LOT of pull and if they adopted HD-DVD early on, I would have expected that to win the war - but that's not going to be the case...

I think this might be a situation where the medium was justified by mass-market early-adopters (as opposed to the niche). This would be an interesting story to follow in retrospect.

In the coming weeks it may be a perfect time to stock up on some "obsolete" HD movies and a player if you don't have one. They are likely to be sold by the box at retailers and on eBay if they really do make an announcement like that.

As long as the movies still play, I see no reason to throw it all away.

I'd argue that because of sites like YouPorn, the porn industry has much less of an influence now than it did with the last format war. YP is within the top 100 sites (in terms of traffic) on the net.

Well I always disliked Sony, ever since all my shit kept breaking the day after the warranties ended. But if they really did make a better format then I guess it's better that they won the war.

I am somewhat of a "Sony Whore" (Sony fanboy is too extreme of a word to use in my case) and I've been pulling for them from the start; Anybody know how much the prices are gonna drop on movies if and when Blu-Ray is named the winner?

Well, you're correct. The porn adoption of the internet in the early 90's helped the internet revolution along, but now that you have a cheap medium in which to deliver content, home videos appear to have little pull.
