Solo acoustic guitar music

i've been listening to a lot of solo acoustic guitar music lately. solo means no other instruments than the guitar (although more than one is ok) - no vocals, no drums, blah blah blah. i've always enjoyed jason truby's guitar work, and his solo albums are fantastic. his work with P.O.D. during his tenure there is my favorite period of that band's history, too. i've also enjoyed some of chris thile's solo mandolin and guitar work (he's the ridiculously talented mandolinist in the progressive bluegrass band Nickel Creek). john williams the guitarist released a country/bluegrass album of just solo guitar arrangements of folk tunes that's awesome - i believe it's called 'hand-picked' or something similar.

does anyone know other artists in this genre? i'm not going for classical or jazz guitar as much as folk, bluegrass, and rock stuff.

thanks in advance.

I'd definitely recommend candyrat artists like Don Ross, Andy McKee, Craig D'Andrea, Peter Ciluzzi, and a bunch of others. Outside of that, Tommy Emmanuel is incredible, if you haven't already heard of him. Also, Rodrigo y Gabriela are really good, but they play a different style than the guys mentioned already. It's got a flamenco influence to it and is more like acoustic rock, I guess. Very good stuff, though.

Is a blatant, shameless plug allowed? I just set up a SoundClick page a few days ago that has a couple acoustic songs I wrote last year on it (http://www.soundclick.com/adamboffa). If you feel so inclined, check it out and let me know what you think. Sorry for being a prick and hijacking!

i don't know if anyone noticed, but i said specifically i didn't want mixes with vocals. all i've heard of don ross has his voice unnecessarily protruding into his great guitar work - can you recommend specific songs to pick up?

That's wild, I actually didn't even know he sang. Something like this video is an example of his more energetic acoustic-only stuff:

I'm pretty sure that entire CD (called Passion Session) has only acoustic guitar stuff on it. Other songs on it that I dig are "Klimbim" and "Tight Trite Night".

Edit: You might run into the same problem with Tommy Emmanuel if you check him out at all, since I know he sings from time to time. Specific songs I really like by him that have no vocals are "Angelina," "Since We Met," and "Those Who Wait."

Passion Session is entirely acoustic. My boss knows Don, and apparently the entire album was recorded in a small stone church with a high-quality mic. No effects, no processing afterwards, just his playing. The other album of his that I've heard, Huron Street, has only one track with vocals, if I recall correctly - surely that's not enough to prevent you from buying it if you like the rest of the album? Although, Passion Session is probably regarded as his best album.

thanks, mike, i'll look into those.

i just know i wouldn't like the vocals - that's what turns me off to them. i rarely like folksy vocals unless they're really high-quality like in, say, Nickel Creek.

A pie in your eye, Brad! Now here's some awesome acoustic and folk vocals (which I call Folkals!)

Took me forever to find it too.

I know this is very late, but I must share Tom Yoder's amazing work. He's a local guitar player, not extremely well-known, but incredible.

Check out his videos on his album pages:

If nothing else, listen to "Locked In" on the first link.
