Salluz
I want to hear any type of metal that doesn't suck theoretically. Song/artist or artist/song, whichever is proper. A few artists/bands that I like: Dream Theater Dragonland Nightwish In the metal genre, I have heard the good, bad, ugly and genius. It seems that the bands whom suck consist of this: 100% energy and 0% concept Minimal instrumentation, unless what's being done with the instrument is I like screaming, but not completely pointless and uncreative noise, especially if it doesn't sound tuned (because if it does sound good, then you'll wonder why they're screaming but you might like it anyway) Nothing but the same constant audio effects and power chords, no other music (treble) unless you're at a break/rest or something, but for the whole song? God no, gimme some treble. Old, generic, uncreative and overused concepts. If I like a song with these elements, it must kick some major ass. PriZm
Well before the incoming shitstorm about whether x band is metal or not, let me humbly recommend: Symphony X Andromeda Dream Theater
Bahamut
I'll preface this with that I can't say I think highly of some of the bands listed in the OP, but eh. I'm more of a power metal guy, so my recommendations will lean more towards that. It's a genre that's more concept-oriented, typically fraught with high pitched melodic vocals, double bass pedals, and clean guitars with extensive soloing. Here's a taste of the genre (plus a Manowar song). Manowar - The Dawn of Battle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1b_9A2EFyA Angra - Nova Era: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1afeQAD2n8 Angra - Running Alone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0FBDaP3mrQ Blind Guardian - I'm Alive: Blind Guardian - Lost in the Twilight Hall: Blind Guardian - Nightfall: Helloween - Guardians: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLMJ-mLzwUQ Helloween - I'm Alive: Helloween - I Want Out: Helloween - The Dark Ride: Gamma Ray - Rebellion From Dreamland: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeiX6bf2OPI Gamma Ray - Anywhere in the Galaxy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cbnes-Q9ZE Kamelot - Memento Mori: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNfEOwMZMmU Iced Earth - Dante's Inferno: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NrVwpBj59E , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrebS90qSAc&feature=related Iced Earth - Burnt Offerings: Sonata Arctica - Don't Say a Word: Symphony X - Domination: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcP3uIAXE6k Children of Bodom - Mask of Sanity: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj7oxkTwRiw And of course, there are some well-known bands it seems you didn't list. Iron Maiden - Wasted Years: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwB9zg7Tbx8 Iron Maiden - Powerslave: Dream Theater - Honor Thy Father: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co3ZYFLRkug And some prog! Ayreon - Day Nine: Playground: Ayreon - The New Migrator: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x01adtQwgUM And here's a thrash song from one of the original pioneers! Overkill - Rotten to the Core: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZaHmHCkqsg
MaxFrost
although they're not a proper metal band, Apocolyptica fits what you're looking for. Look em up.
Bahamut
although they're not a proper metal band, Apocolyptica fits what you're looking for. Look em up. Apocalyptica* . They got their fame early on as a Metallica cover band with 4 cellos, but now they compose originals.
Salluz
The Prodigy's some sort of Breakbeat/Punk/Dance/Techno group; POD's alternative Metal (evolved from rapcore); Linkin Park is alternative metal; Rage Against the Machine is rap metal; Deftones are experimental rock/metal/alternative. Necrotic
I've been obsessed with bands that utilize Meshuggah-like rhythms lately. If you like melody, check out After the Burial and Animals as Leaders especially: After The Burial - Rareform and Berzerker and and Animals As Leaders - CAFO and Tempting Time

The Biznut
Wes and LuketheXJesse have done a wonderful job in my opinion, we share similar interests, so I will fill in with the few other bands I would add to the list. Dragonland is awesome! So musically delicious! Go listen for yourself! 3 from their awesome album Astronomy: Casseopeia 4 from their older albums: Ok I don't have time to do more links atm, but I will recommend some others. STRATOVARIUS - Have some great songs but can grow old quick. Pretty recycled formula. IN FLAMES - I have liked almost every song ever made by this band. BLIND GUARDIAN - Again, pretty much every song they've made is worth listening to. Love it all. MERCENARY - 11 Dreams MERCENARY - Everblack MERCENARY - Screaming from the Heavens ELVENKING - Hobs and Feathers ELVENKING - Skywards ELVENKING - Pagan Purity FALCONER - Portals of Light FALCONER - Clarion Call FALCONER - Enter the Glade FALCONER - Decadence of Dignity X JAPAN - X X JAPAN - Kurenai ANGRA - Rebirth ANGRA - Acid Rain SOILWORK - 20 Miles SOILWORK - Nerve SOILWORK - As We Speak Hmm so many good tunes! oh. And Saitama Seisyu Heiki. Search SSH Holy Orders on youtube.

Salluz
Casseopeia piqued my interest the most. Hell yeah, this stuff kicks ass! I was tired of hearing garbagy metal.
The Biznut
Oh wow, I feel like I'm 14 again... I totally stumbled across Blind Guardian while watching AMV's when I was 17, just as my heavy Metallica obsession was starting to fade. And just like that, I had a new obsession, it was called Power Metal. Such good days. Casseopeia piqued my interest the most. Hell yeah, this stuff kicks ass! I was tired of hearing garbagy metal. Well you came to the right place and asked the right people, this has become a pretty awesome list. Casseopeia totally had me singing for months. That whole album is amazing. Excellent Production. Since it was my suggestion, does that mean I Win?

The Author
this thread is hilarious I know, all this talk about metal, and no mention of Titanium, the best metal ever. I even have a bone partially replaced by it, it's amazing. Well, this thread cannot surely be about metal as in a music genre, I mean, there's a post that mentions Creed...
